VLC can do far more than play a file. Its desktop controls let you shape sound with a 10-band equalizer and audio processors, correct lip-sync with numerical delays, change picture geometry, crop or enlarge the image, alter playback speed, and apply deinterlacing or post-processing when the material needs it. Android adds its own equalizer, 50-millisecond audio-delay controls, 0.25x–4x speed range, and display modes such as Fill, 16:9, 4:3, and Center. The key is to change one setting at a time and remember that most effects have an Enable switch. This guide shows where each control is, what it changes, and how to undo a change when the result is worse.
What can VLC adjust?
VLC is a free, open-source, cross-platform multimedia player and framework. It can play local files, discs, capture devices, webcams, and network streams, while also providing audio and video filters and hardware-decoding support. The exact controls differ between desktop and Android, but the same principle applies: choose the track or display control you need, make a small change, listen or watch, and then keep or reverse it.
- Sound: a 10-band equalizer, compressor, spatializer, stereo widener, and pitch controls are available on desktop. The equalizer has to be enabled before its bands or presets do anything.
- Picture: video effects, aspect-ratio selection, crop, zoom, deinterlacing, post-processing, and screenshots are available from desktop video controls.
- Timing: audio and subtitles have separate numerical delays. Desktop keyboard shortcuts provide quick adjustments while a video is playing.
- Playback: desktop Playback controls handle speed and track selection; Android documents a 0.25x to 4x speed range.
- Performance: VLC can use hardware decoding on most platforms, with software decoding as a fallback. Whether it helps depends on the device, operating system, and video.
How do I adjust the equalizer and other audio effects on desktop?
Open Tools > Effects and Filters > Audio Effects. Select the Equalizer tab, check Enable, and then move individual bands or choose a preset. If Enable is not checked, the sliders and preset selection will not affect the sound.

Equalizer: change frequency balance
The desktop equalizer has 10 frequency bands. Lower-frequency bands affect bass and kick-drum weight; middle bands influence voices and many instruments; the highest bands affect treble detail and hiss. Make small moves rather than pushing every slider to an extreme. A broad, gentle adjustment is less likely to introduce harshness or overload than a series of large boosts.

- Start playback at a representative part of the file, not a silent introduction.
- Enable the equalizer.
- Move one or two bands by a small amount and listen for several seconds.
- Compare with the equalizer bypassed so you can tell whether the change actually helps.
- Use a preset as a starting point, then fine-tune it for your speakers or headphones.
Equalization changes tonal balance; it does not repair a badly clipped recording, replace a missing channel, or remove a delay between sound and picture.
Compressor: control dynamic range
The compressor reduces the difference between very loud and very quiet portions. It can make dialogue easier to hear when a film alternates between whispers and explosions, but excessive compression makes music or effects sound flat. Increase it gradually and judge the quietest passages as well as the loudest ones.
Spatializer: add a room-like impression
The spatializer simulates a sense of room or acoustic space. It can make headphones feel less closed-in, but it may also blur a precise stereo image or make a recording sound distant. Treat it as an effect for a particular listening situation rather than a universal improvement.
Stereo widener: increase perceived width
A stereo widener increases the apparent distance between left and right channels. Use a modest amount first; an aggressive setting can weaken center-panned vocals or cause phase-like cancellation when the signal is played through a mono speaker.
Advanced controls: change pitch
Advanced audio controls include pitch adjustment. Pitch is separate from playback speed: use it when the musical or vocal pitch needs correction, and use Playback speed when the goal is simply to make a recording faster or slower. Change one of these variables at a time so you know which control produced the result.
How can I fix VLC audio delay or lip-sync?
Use VLC’s synchronization controls to enter a positive or negative audio delay. A positive value holds the sound back; a negative value brings it forward. Watch a clear mouth movement, clap, or other event while making small changes, and reset the value after testing if it does not solve the problem.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Correct audio with the synchronization panel
- Start the affected video and identify whether sound arrives before or after the matching picture.
- Open VLC’s synchronization controls from the playback or tools interface.
- Enter a numerical audio delay with the appropriate sign. Use a positive value when audio is early and a negative value when audio is late.
- Apply the change and check several dialogue lines or impacts, not just one moment.
- Change only the audio delay while testing. Do not adjust subtitle timing or playback speed at the same time.
Use desktop keyboard shortcuts for quick tests
VideoLAN documents J and K as desktop shortcuts for adjusting audio delay. Press them while the video plays and watch the on-screen delay value or listen for the alignment to improve. The shortcuts move the delay in opposite directions, so use the one that corrects the observed lead or lag.

How do I change brightness, contrast, saturation, aspect ratio, crop, or zoom?
Use VLC’s video controls and the Video menu for display and processing changes. Aspect ratio changes the geometry in which the whole frame is displayed; crop removes edges; zoom changes the displayed scale. These controls solve different problems, so choose according to what is wrong with the picture.
Brightness, contrast, and other video effects
Open the video-effects controls from VLC’s effects interface while the video is playing. Adjust brightness or contrast in small increments and compare with the unprocessed image. If a file looks washed out, lowering contrast is not automatically the answer; first check whether the source itself is encoded that way. Avoid stacking several corrections until you can identify the benefit of each one.
Aspect ratio versus crop
| Control | What it changes | Use it when | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | The displayed width-to-height geometry of the complete frame | People or circles look stretched, or the file was flagged with the wrong display shape | Choosing an unsuitable ratio can make the entire image look unnaturally wide or tall |
| Crop | Removes pixels from one or more edges | Black bars, broadcast edges, or unwanted borders need to be excluded | Cropping can cut off subtitles, faces, or other edge content |
| Zoom | Changes the apparent scale of the displayed image | You need a closer view of part of the frame or want the image to fill more of the window | Zooming does not restore detail that is absent from the source |
Try aspect ratio before crop when the whole image is distorted. Try crop when the geometry is correct but unwanted edges remain. Use zoom last, because it changes how much of the already-corrected frame you can see.

Deinterlacing for interlaced video
Interlaced material can show comb-shaped lines around moving objects. VLC provides deinterlacing options in its video controls. Enable it only for interlaced or visibly combed footage; applying it to progressive video can soften the image or add unnecessary processing.

Post-processing for difficult material
Post-processing can apply additional processing to video that contains visible decoding or compression problems. It is an advanced, conditional fix rather than a default quality switch. Compare the result with post-processing disabled, especially on a slower device, because extra processing can increase the workload without improving a clean source.
Take a screenshot from the Video menu
VLC includes a screenshot command in the Video menu. Pause on the exact frame you want, open Video, and choose the screenshot entry. A screenshot captures the displayed frame, so aspect ratio, crop, zoom, and video effects affect what is saved.
How do I change playback speed and select tracks?
Desktop Playback controls include speed changes and track selection. Choose the speed command while the file is playing, then return to normal speed when finished. Speed changes alter timing; they are not a substitute for correcting a fixed audio offset, and changing speed while diagnosing lip-sync can make the diagnosis harder.

What audio, speed, and display controls does VLC provide on Android?
Android exposes a different set of controls from the desktop interface. It includes an enableable equalizer, adjustable audio delay, a documented 0.25x–4x playback-speed range, and display modes such as Fill, 16:9, 4:3, and Center.
| Capability | Desktop VLC | Android VLC |
|---|---|---|
| Equalizer | 10-band equalizer with presets; must be enabled, plus compressor, spatializer, stereo widener, and pitch controls | Equalizer can be enabled; the desktop effect set and band details are not stated |
| Audio synchronization | Numerical delay; J/K shortcuts adjust audio delay, and G/H adjust subtitle delay | Audio delay can be changed in 50 ms steps or with the interactive sound-heard/sound-spotted widget |
| Playback speed | Available from Playback; a single range is not stated | 0.25x through 4x |
| Display geometry | Aspect ratio, crop, and zoom controls, plus video effects | Display modes include Fill, 16:9, 4:3, and Center |
| Advanced video processing | Deinterlacing, post-processing, and screenshots are available | The desktop-specific processing controls are not stated |
| Hardware decoding | Available on most platforms with software fallback; exact behavior depends on the device and platform | Hardware-decoding behavior remains device- and platform-dependent |
Set Android audio delay in measured steps
- Play the video and identify a visible speech or impact event.
- Open the audio-delay control in the Android playback interface.
- Move the delay in 50 ms steps, checking the same event after each change.
- If you prefer visual feedback, use the sound-heard/sound-spotted widget to indicate when the two events line up.
- Leave subtitle timing alone unless the captions, rather than the sound, are out of time.
Choose an Android speed or display mode
Set speed from the playback controls anywhere between 0.25x and 4x. For the picture, choose Fill when you want the display to occupy the screen, 16:9 or 4:3 when you need a specific geometry, or Center when preserving a smaller image is more important than filling the display. A display mode changes presentation, not the underlying video file.

How do I enable hardware decoding, and when should I turn it off?
VLC supports hardware decoding on most platforms, can use zero-copy paths on the graphics processor, and can fall back to software decoding. The setting’s label and location vary by platform and build; on desktop, open Preferences and look in the input or codec section for the hardware-accelerated decoding option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open VLC Preferences.
- Find the input or codec settings and locate hardware-accelerated or hardware decoding.
- Enable the available automatic or platform-specific option, then apply the change and restart playback.
- Test the same demanding file you were having trouble with.
- Check for dropped frames, picture corruption, missing hardware features, or a change in audio/video timing.
Hardware decoding is not a guarantee of smoother playback. A particular driver or device may produce artifacts or fail on a codec that software decoding handles correctly. If the picture becomes unstable, switch back to software decoding and compare the result; VLC’s fallback is useful precisely because hardware support is platform-dependent.
What should I do when a setting appears to have no effect?
Work through the following checks in order rather than changing every control at once.
- Confirm the feature is enabled. The desktop equalizer does nothing until its Enable box is checked. Other effect panels may have their own activation control.
- Check that you changed the active track. A file with multiple audio or subtitle tracks may make a correct adjustment seem ineffective if another track is selected.
- Separate geometry from scaling. If people look stretched, correct aspect ratio. If the frame has unwanted borders, crop. If you simply need a closer view, use zoom.
- Use one timing variable. Audio delay, subtitle delay, and playback speed solve different problems. Adjust only the one that matches the symptom.
- Test advanced processing conditionally. Deinterlacing is for combing, and post-processing is for difficult material. Disable each when testing clean or progressive video.
- Compare hardware and software decoding. If stutter or artifacts begin after enabling hardware decoding, revert it and test the same scene with software decoding.
- Return to a neutral state before another experiment. Remove the temporary delay, restore the original display mode, or bypass the effect before trying a different fix. Otherwise, two compensating changes can hide the real cause.
Which settings should I use for common situations?
Dialogue is hard to hear over explosions
Start with the compressor and make a restrained adjustment. If voices are still masked by tonal imbalance, use the equalizer to make a small change in the voice range. Do not assume that a large treble boost is a substitute for dynamic-range control.
The picture has combing during motion
Enable deinterlacing and watch a moving edge. If the combing disappears without unacceptable softness, keep it for that interlaced source. Turn it back off for progressive material that does not show the problem.
The image is stretched but otherwise complete
Change aspect ratio rather than cropping. Cropping would remove valid picture information while leaving the underlying geometry problem unresolved.

Black borders are part of the frame
Use crop to remove the unwanted edges, then use zoom only if you need the remaining image to occupy more of the window. Check subtitles and faces near the edge before keeping the crop.
A high-resolution file stutters
Compare hardware decoding with software decoding on the same segment. Keep the mode that produces the steadier picture without artifacts; the faster-looking option is not better if it introduces corruption.
How can I build a repeatable VLC adjustment workflow?
A repeatable process prevents accidental combinations of effects and makes a successful change easy to reproduce.
- Describe the symptom precisely. Decide whether the problem is tone, loudness variation, timing, geometry, unwanted edges, scaling, interlacing, processing load, or playback speed.
- Open only the relevant control group. Use Audio Effects for sound, synchronization for timing, Video controls for the picture, Playback for speed and tracks, and Preferences for decoding.
- Make the smallest useful change. Move one equalizer band, enter one delay, select one aspect ratio, or toggle one processing option.
- Check a representative passage. Dialogue, motion, and high-detail scenes expose different problems, so test more than a static frame.
- Record the working value. Note the delay, display mode, or effect setting if you will need it again for the same source.
- Undo before switching strategies. A clean baseline makes it clear whether the next adjustment helped.
With that method, VLC’s many controls remain practical rather than overwhelming: each tool has a defined job, and the correct setting is the one that fixes the observed symptom without creating a new one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer a desktop VLC equalizer preset directly to Android?
The interfaces are separate, and the documented Android feature only establishes that an equalizer can be enabled; it does not establish desktop-preset import or synchronization. Recreate the tonal balance manually on the device instead of assuming the same preset file will work.
Why does changing aspect ratio not remove black bars?
Aspect ratio changes the geometry used to display the complete frame, while black bars may be actual pixels in the video. If the bars are encoded into the picture, crop them first and then use scaling only as needed.
Is a positive audio delay always the right fix for late sound?
No. A positive value holds audio back, so it is appropriate when sound arrives before the matching picture. If sound is already late, a negative value is the direction to test.

No. It is intended for interlaced material or visible combing. Progressive video can look softer or consume extra processing when deinterlacing is applied unnecessarily.
