Managing work stress means acting on both sides of the problem: use practical coping steps for today, and address job conditions that keep creating strain. Notice recurring triggers, discuss a specific change with a coworker or supervisor where possible, take breaks, and seek support if you are struggling. You do not have to treat a harmful workload or workplace as a personal failure.

Recognize the signs and what may be causing them

Work stress can appear as irritability, anxiety, helplessness, low motivation, exhaustion, low mood, trouble sleeping, or difficulty concentrating. These are signals to pay attention to, not a diagnosis. Stress can also be associated with changes in appetite or energy, headaches, body pains, stomach problems, and worsening chronic or mental-health conditions, according to the CDC’s stress guidance.

NIOSH defines job stress as “the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of a job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.” That definition matters: strain can reflect a mismatch between a job’s demands and the time, staffing, control, clarity, or other resources available to do it. It is not necessarily a problem that can be solved by trying harder. See NIOSH’s overview of job stress.

Look for patterns, not a single bad day

Notice which tasks, interactions, schedules, or working conditions repeatedly leave you tense or depleted. For a short period, jot down what was happening, what you noticed, and what might have helped. The aim is to identify a workable change—not to monitor yourself perfectly or blame yourself for reacting to difficult conditions.

Take steps you can use during the workday

Make a specific request

When it feels safe and practical, talk with a supervisor or coworker about the pattern you have noticed. A concrete request is often easier to discuss than a general statement that work is stressful. Depending on the cause, you might ask to clarify priorities, review workload, discuss schedule flexibility, identify needed resources, or define responsibilities more clearly. These are possible conversation topics, not guaranteed accommodations or universal legal entitlements.

CDC recommends discussing job stress and possible solutions with coworkers or supervisors. Consider describing the work issue, its effect, and the change you are asking to explore. For example: “When these two deadlines fall on the same day, I can’t complete both to the expected standard. Can we agree which one takes priority?”

Take breaks and connect with someone supportive

When your work allows, step away briefly to rest, stretch, or check in with someone supportive. Small pauses can help you reset in the moment, but they cannot make an excessive workload or unsafe conditions reasonable. If breaks are routinely impossible, that may itself be worth raising as a working-condition concern.

Protect time away from work—and get support when needed

Outside work, CDC suggests exercise, time outdoors, and enjoyable activities as healthy ways to cope. Choose what is realistic for you; these habits can support well-being, but they are not substitutes for changing harmful job conditions or getting professional help.

Workplace changes matter as much as individual coping

Personal coping can help with immediate strain, but some causes require action from the organization. CDC says changing workplace policies and practices is the best way to address workers’ mental health. Its employer guidance describes measures such as reducing root causes including excessive demands or workplace bullying, increasing flexibility and control, training supervisors and workers, and providing access to EAPs. If a stressor is built into how work is assigned or managed, it is reasonable to raise the need for a workplace-level solution rather than treating the burden as yours alone.

The World Health Organization’s 2022 Guidelines on mental health at work consider both organizational and individual interventions. They say universal psychosocial interventions to build stress-management skills, including mindfulness- or cognitive-behavioural approaches, may be considered for workers; that recommendation is conditional and based on low-certainty evidence. Leisure-based physical activity may also be considered, with very-low-certainty evidence. These are possible supports, not guaranteed treatments.

Put work stress in context without mistaking it for a diagnosis

WHO estimated in 2022 that 15% of working-age adults have a mental disorder at any point in time. It also estimated annual global economic costs of US $1 trillion from depression and anxiety, driven predominantly by lost productivity. Neither figure measures work-caused stress: they provide broader context about mental health, not a prediction of what will happen to you. See the WHO publication page.

If you feel unable to cope, start with one manageable step: identify the recurring pressure, ask about a specific change, take a brief pause if possible, or contact a trusted person or professional. Where the cause is embedded in the job, seek support for changing the conditions as well as ways to get through the day.
