You can manage Walmart app data in three places: the Walmart account, your iPhone or Android settings, and (for purchase-history collection) a separate Communications & Privacy control. To remove a saved card, open Account → Settings gear → Wallet. To revoke camera, microphone, contacts, location, or notification access, change the Walmart permission in your phone settings as well as any matching in-app setting. Walmart’s Sparky assistant is available to signed-in US app users, but Walmart’s Sparky help page does not document a dedicated privacy or retention switch.
This guide gives the exact paths for payment methods, notifications, device permissions, Sparky-related choices, and store-purchase history, including the restrictions that can prevent a change.
Where are Walmart’s privacy and payment controls?
Walmart separates account controls from operating-system permissions. Wallet and Communications & Privacy change how your Walmart account is used; iOS or Android settings decide whether the app can reach hardware, contacts, location services, or notifications. A change in one place does not always override the other. For example, turning off Push Notifications in Walmart does not replace the phone’s notification authorization, and allowing notifications on the phone does not turn on Walmart’s in-app marketing setting.

Use the account area when the setting follows your Walmart login, such as a saved card or communication preference. Use the device settings when the request concerns access to the phone itself. This distinction also helps explain why uninstalling or reinstalling the app is not a substitute for changing an account setting: Wallet entries and purchase-history choices are tied to the account.

How do I add, edit, remove, or change the default Walmart payment method?
Use Wallet in the Walmart app for all saved-payment changes. The same area supports cards, eligible bank accounts, and other payment types Walmart presents for your account. You can review the methods currently saved before checkout and decide which one should be used automatically.
Add a payment method
- Open the Walmart app and select Account.
- Tap the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Wallet, then Add new payment method.
- Select the payment type and enter its details. Walmart also lets you scan a card with the device camera instead of typing the number.
- Select Save Card (or the equivalent save button shown for that payment type).
Scanning is optional. If you do not want to grant camera access, enter the card number manually instead; the camera permission is relevant to the scan function, not to every Wallet operation. Review the billing information before saving so the method can be used for the intended purchases.
Walmart’s Payment Methods instructions state that up to three bank accounts can be saved, but only one bank account can be connected at a time. If you reach that limit, review existing entries in Wallet rather than repeatedly attempting to add another account. The one-connected-at-a-time rule is separate from the ability to save up to three bank-account entries.
Edit billing details, expiration, or security code
- Go to Account → Settings gear → Wallet.
- Select Edit beside the payment method.
- Change the billing address, expiration date, or security code, then save.
If the card number itself changed, Walmart says to delete the old card and add the replacement as a new payment method; editing the existing entry is not the documented route for a changed number. This matters after a replacement card is issued: changing only the expiration date or security code is different from replacing the underlying card number.
Remove a saved card
- Open Account → Wallet.
- Select the card, then choose Edit.
- Tap Remove Card and confirm.
Removal affects the saved method used for future transactions. Previously imported purchase records remain in your account; deleting a card is not a way to erase historical purchases. It also does not cancel an order, subscription, or membership that was already created with that method.
If Walmart will not show or complete the Remove Card action, check whether the method is attached to an active order, subscription, or membership. Walmart warns that those relationships can prevent removal. Resolve or replace the relationship first, then return to Wallet. Do not assume that deleting and reinstalling the app will bypass the restriction.
Set a different default
- Open Wallet from your account.
- Select the payment method you want to use automatically.
- Choose Set as Default.
The default method is used for future eligible purchases unless you select another method during checkout. Setting a new default is therefore different from deleting the old method: the old entry can remain available for a specific checkout if Walmart permits it.

Why can’t I remove a Walmart card or change payment on an order?
Walmart can block removal when the payment method is attached to an active order, subscription, or membership. Resolve or replace that relationship first, then return to Wallet and try again. A card can be perfectly valid in Wallet and still be unavailable for deletion because another account activity depends on it.

- Open Account → Purchase history.
- Select the order.
- Choose Edit under Payment Method.
- Select the replacement method and save it.
The payment method can be changed only once per order. The option is unavailable after the order is on the way or has been delivered. If the edit control is missing, verify that you opened the correct order under the same Walmart account and that the order has not crossed that status boundary. Changing the payment method on an order is not the same as changing the default in Wallet; one affects that specific order, while the other applies to future eligible purchases.
How do I turn off Walmart marketing notifications?
Marketing push notifications require two independent permissions: the Walmart app’s communication setting and your phone’s notification authorization. Turning off only one layer may not produce the result you expect. Account-level communication choices and device-level notification controls should be treated as separate checkpoints.
Turn off the in-app setting
- Open Walmart and tap the Account icon.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Open Communications and Privacy (the label can vary slightly by platform).
- Open Communications or Communications & Privacy.
- Switch Push Notifications off.
The wording can differ slightly between iOS and Android versions, so look for the Communications or Communications & Privacy area beneath the account settings. This is the narrowest place to start when you want fewer promotional messages but still want the app’s account-level communication choices available.
Turn off notifications at the phone level
iPhone: Open Settings → Notifications → Walmart, then turn off Allow Notifications.
Android: Open Settings → Apps (or Apps & Notifications) → Walmart → Notifications, then disable the notification categories or master switch you do not want. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android version.
Device-level blocking is broader: it can suppress every Walmart notification, including order or delivery alerts. If you need transactional alerts but not marketing, use the in-app communication choices and Android’s individual notification categories where available. On a device that offers only one master switch, turning it off may also hide time-sensitive order information.

How do I stop Walmart from using my camera, microphone, contacts, or location?
These permissions are controlled by iOS or Android. Walmart’s Privacy Notice says: “You must give us your permission before we access these features, and you can opt out of providing access to them at any time by adjusting the settings on your device.” You can therefore deny a permission later even if you granted it during setup.
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Apps (or select Walmart directly, depending on iOS version).
- Choose Walmart.
- Open each permission category—such as Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Location—and select Never, deny access, or disable the switch.
For precise location, choose a location option that does not allow access, or turn off Precise Location while leaving approximate location available if that is the choice you prefer. The exact labels can vary by iOS release, but the control remains in the Walmart app’s permission page.

Android
- Open Settings → Apps (or Apps & Notifications).
- Select Walmart, then Permissions.
- Set Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and Location to Don’t allow, or choose a limited location option where your Android version offers one.
Android menu names and available location choices vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. If you see separate controls for approximate and precise location, choose the least access that still supports the feature you intend to use.
Walmart uses these permissions for functions such as voice search, barcode scanning, mobile Scan & Go, and importing contacts. Revoking access can disable the related function without affecting unrelated shopping features. For example, denying Camera can prevent card scanning or barcode scanning while leaving ordinary browsing and checkout available; denying Contacts affects contact importing rather than every Walmart account feature.
What happens to voice data?
For voice shopping, Walmart says the app receives a text transcription after a voice feature is activated and does not use voice data for biometric analysis. The “Hey, Walmart” wake-word behavior requires consent to microphone access and speech recognition; denying either prevents that hands-free behavior.
If you do not use voice search, you can deny Microphone access and still use typed search. If you later need voice shopping, restore the permission in the device settings and activate the feature again. A permission change may require reopening Walmart before the app recognizes the new state.
What is Sparky, and what privacy controls do I have?
Sparky is Walmart’s AI-powered shopping assistant. Walmart describes it as a tool that can understand shopping needs conversationally, suggest products, answer questions, synthesize reviews, and make recommendations based on preferences. It is offered in the Walmart app to signed-in customers in the United States.
Because Sparky is described as a signed-in app experience, the documented availability does not promise anonymous or guest access. Sign-in status and US availability are part of the stated eligibility, so a feature may not appear for a guest account or outside the United States.
Walmart says Sparky uses limited customer data and operates under restrictions in the Walmart Privacy Policy. Its help information does not document a dedicated Sparky switch for data retention or personalization. To narrow data access, use the broader Walmart Privacy Notice and account privacy controls, and revoke camera, microphone, contacts, location, or notification permissions at the phone level when those features are not needed.
That means Sparky’s capability description and privacy controls are not the same thing. The assistant can suggest products and synthesize reviews, but the help information does not provide a separate button that independently erases Sparky activity or turns off personalization. Account-level Communications & Privacy choices and device permissions are the documented control points.

How do I stop automatic store-purchase history?
Automatic store-purchase history is separate from saved payment methods. To opt out, open Account → Communications & privacy → Store purchases and switch the setting to Off.
This opt-out does not hide every purchase record: purchases made with Walmart Pay and receipts scanned with the Walmart app still appear. Likewise, removing a saved card does not remove purchase history that was already imported. The two controls answer different questions: Wallet determines which payment methods are available for future use, while Store purchases determines whether Walmart automatically imports certain store-purchase information.
If your goal is to stop new automatic imports, use the Store purchases toggle. If your goal is to prevent a particular card from being used again, remove or replace it in Wallet, subject to any active order, subscription, or membership restriction. If your goal is to hide Walmart Pay transactions or app-scanned receipts, the documented opt-out does not do that.
Account-level versus device-level control
Use this distinction as a quick diagnostic:
- Walmart account controls: Wallet, default payment method, order payment editing, Communications & Privacy, Push Notifications, and Store purchases.
- Phone controls: notification authorization plus Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and Location permissions.
- Feature behavior: Sparky’s documented capabilities and limits, including its signed-in US availability and lack of a documented dedicated privacy toggle.
When a setting involves both categories, change both deliberately. Notifications are the clearest example: Walmart’s in-app Push Notifications choice and iOS or Android authorization must align. Camera, microphone, contacts, and location are consent-based device permissions, even when an account feature uses them.

Which control should I change?
- A card is no longer wanted: remove it in Wallet, unless an active order, subscription, or membership still uses it.
- A card number changed: delete the old entry and add the replacement rather than editing the old number.
- You need a different checkout default: use Set as Default in Wallet.
- You need to fix one pending order: use Purchase history → order → Edit under Payment Method; remember that the change is allowed only once and not after the order is on the way or delivered.
- You want fewer promotional alerts: disable Push Notifications in Walmart and review phone notification authorization.
- You want to keep some alerts: avoid the phone’s master notification switch when category-level controls let you disable marketing while retaining order or delivery categories.
- You do not use scanning or voice features: deny Camera or Microphone access in device settings.
- You do not want contact importing: deny Contacts access; unrelated shopping functions can continue.
- You do not want precise location: deny Location or select a less precise option where the phone provides one.
- You do not want automatic store receipts imported: turn off Store purchases, while remembering that Walmart Pay and scanned receipts remain visible.
- You are concerned about Sparky: review the Walmart Privacy Notice and account Communications & Privacy controls; there is no documented Sparky-specific privacy toggle.
What should I check if a setting does not take effect?
- Confirm that you changed both layers when applicable—for example, Push Notifications inside Walmart and Notifications in iOS or Android.
- Reopen the app after changing a permission, then test the specific feature that needed access.
- Check whether an order is already on the way or delivered; payment edits are unavailable after that point.
- Look for an active subscription or membership using the card before attempting removal.
- Use the exact account that owns the order, Wallet entry, or purchase history you are trying to change.
- Remember that disabling store-purchase history does not remove Walmart Pay transactions or scanned receipts already shown.
- If a card number changed, add the replacement as a new method instead of trying to overwrite the old number.
- If a feature stops working after a permission change, restore only the permission that feature requires—for example, Camera for scanning or Microphone and speech recognition for “Hey, Walmart.”
- If a menu label differs, look for the equivalent area: Wallet under the Account settings gear, Communications under Communications & Privacy, and permissions under the Walmart app entry in device settings.
Security and privacy checks before you finish
Review the list of saved methods in Wallet after making changes so the old card or account is no longer available for future eligible purchases. Confirm the intended default separately; removing a method and setting a default are different actions.
For permissions, make the smallest change that meets your needs. Denying Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Location can reduce access while leaving ordinary browsing and checkout available, but the associated scan, voice, contact-import, or location feature may stop working. For notifications, decide whether you need order and delivery alerts before using the phone’s broad master switch.
For purchase history and Sparky, remember that visibility and feature access are controlled in different places. Store-purchase history has its own toggle, while Walmart Pay and scanned receipts continue to appear. Sparky’s help information describes its shopping functions and limited-data approach but does not document a separate retention or personalization control, so the broader Privacy Notice, Communications & Privacy controls, and device permissions remain the documented options.

Can I keep Walmart delivery alerts while blocking promotional messages?

Why does Walmart ask for contacts permission?
