ChatGPT’s ad controls are in Settings → Ads controls. You can disable ad personalization, erase advertising data, hide or report an individual ad, use Temporary Chat for an ad-free conversation, or choose an Ads-Free option on an eligible Free account. Turning off personalization does not remove ads; it changes the signals used to make them relevant.
If you want ads removed from a Free account, select Change plan to go ad-free, then Reduce message limits and confirm. The trade-off is lower message limits and potentially less access to tools such as image generation and deep research. OpenAI currently says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads, while Free and Go accounts may show them where the rollout is available.
How do I turn off ads in ChatGPT?
Open the advertising controls from ChatGPT’s settings, then choose whether you want less personalization or no ads. The exact choices shown depend on your account, country and rollout status.
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Choose Ads controls.
- For less targeted advertising, switch Personalize ads off.
- For the ad-free Free-plan option, select Change plan to go ad-free, choose Reduce message limits, and confirm.
The personalization switch leaves advertisements visible. The Ads-Free choice is a separate plan setting and is offered only to eligible Free accounts in places where OpenAI has enabled it.

Does turning off ad personalization remove ads?
No. With personalization disabled, an ad can still be selected from the context of the conversation you are currently having. OpenAI says it will not use other chat threads, your ads history or topics from elsewhere in your account to inform the ads shown.
What the setting changes
- Ads remain: the control does not create an ad-free account.
- Fewer signals: other conversations, advertising history and off-topic interests are excluded from personalization, according to OpenAI.
- Current-chat context can still matter: the conversation in which an ad appears may be used to select a relevant ad.
Use this option when your priority is limiting cross-conversation personalization rather than removing advertisements entirely.
Can I remove ads while staying on the Free plan?
In regions and accounts where the feature is available, yes. The Ads-Free Free-plan choice removes ads but lowers usage limits and may remove access to some tools.

- Go to Settings.
- Open Ads controls.
- Select Change plan to go ad-free.
- Choose Reduce message limits.
- Confirm the change.
What you give up
OpenAI describes this as a lower-limit version of the Free experience, not as the normal Free tier with advertising simply hidden. Message allowances are reduced, and OpenAI gives image generation and deep research as examples of tools that may no longer be available. The screen shown for your account is the authoritative list of limits and tools, because availability can change during the rollout.

Which ChatGPT plans are ad-free?
OpenAI’s current advertising FAQ identifies the following account categories. “Ad-free” means the plan is not expected to display ChatGPT ads under the stated policy; it does not mean every other product or website is ad-free.

The table reflects OpenAI’s current policy, not a guarantee that a particular account will see every option. Plan names, limits and included tools can change.
Can I avoid ads in only one conversation?
Yes. Start a Temporary Chat when you want that conversation to contain no ads. This is a per-conversation choice, so it does not change advertising behavior in your regular chat history or alter the plan attached to your account.
When Temporary Chat is useful
- You need a single private-looking workspace without an ad displayed alongside the conversation.
- You do not want to change your account’s personalization preference.
- You still need the normal limits and tools associated with your current plan.
Temporary Chat is not the same as the Ads-Free Free option: it removes ads from that chat only, while the Free option changes the account’s advertising and usage arrangement.

How do I hide or report one ChatGPT ad?
Use the ad’s three-dot menu when you want to remove a specific advertisement rather than change your account settings.
- Open the ad’s three-dot menu.
- Select Hide ad to remove it, or choose Report ad to send it to OpenAI for review.
- Review the explanation in the same menu if you want to see why the ad was displayed.
Reporting both hides the ad and submits it for review. This action concerns that advertisement; it is not a replacement for disabling personalization or selecting an Ads-Free plan.
What information do ChatGPT ads use?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address or sensitive information. Advertisers receive aggregated reporting, such as total views or clicks, rather than a profile containing those personal details.

Deleting ads data stops that data from being used to show ads. OpenAI says the data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal, so the control should not be interpreted as instantaneous physical deletion from every system.

Deleting ads data is different from turning off personalization. The former removes stored advertising data from future ad use; the latter limits which signals can personalize ads while allowing ads to continue.
Do ads influence ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI’s stated position is: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” Its Help Center explains that ads run on separate systems, are clearly labeled, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses.
This separation means an ad may appear near a response without being part of the answer-generation process. Treat the advertisement and the conversational answer as separate elements of the interface.
Why can’t I see Ads controls in my account?
Advertising features are being rolled out gradually, so the controls are not available to every person, country or account at the same time. The initial test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults using Free and Go tiers.

Checks to make
- Confirm that you are signed in; the initial test was for logged-in adults.
- Check Settings for an Ads controls entry rather than assuming the option is missing from another menu.
- Consider your plan: the advertising test concerns Free and Go accounts, while OpenAI lists several paid and education plans as ad-free.
- Allow for regional rollout differences. A control available in the United States may not yet be enabled in another country.
If the entry is absent after these checks, there may be no user-side switch to enable it yet. Recheck the in-product settings after an update because labels and eligibility can change during the rollout.

Choose based on whether you care most about personalization, uninterrupted access to tools, or eliminating ads from a particular chat.

What should I know before changing the setting?
- Personalization and removal are separate: disabling the first does not accomplish the second.
- Free Ads-Free has a real trade-off: check the confirmation screen for the limits and tools that apply to your account before accepting.
- Temporary Chat is narrow in scope: it is useful for a single session but does not change your account plan.
- Policies can move during rollout: OpenAI may change labels, eligible regions, plan behavior or included tools.
- Ads are labeled and separated from answers: an advertisement beside a response is not supposed to change the response itself.
