Use your browser’s built-in extension manager to turn an extension off, uninstall it, or narrow the websites it can access. Disabling is reversible and keeps the extension installed; removing it uninstalls it. The steps below cover desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on Mac. Safari’s Mac instructions do not apply unchanged to iPhone or iPad.
Choose between disabling, restricting access, and removing
- Disable an extension when you want to test whether it is causing a problem or pause it temporarily. You can turn it back on later.
- Restrict website access when you still want the extension but do not want it active on every site. The available controls vary by browser and extension.
- Remove an extension when you no longer want it or do not trust it. Removal uninstalls it from that browser.
All four browsers below include extension-management controls; you do not need a separate physical tool to manage or remove extensions.
Manage extensions in Google Chrome
- In desktop Chrome, select More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
- On an extension’s card, use its on/off control to disable or re-enable it.
- To uninstall it, select Remove on its card and confirm. You can also right-click its toolbar icon and select Remove from Chrome.
- To narrow its website access, open the extension’s details and review its site-access controls. Depending on the interface, you may be able to allow access only when you select the extension, on the current site, on specific sites, or on all sites.
If Chrome marks an extension as corrupted, use Repair if that action is available. If it remains corrupted afterward, Google advises checking for suspicious software that may be changing the extension’s files; removing the extension alone may not address that source. See Google’s Chrome extension help.
Manage extensions in Microsoft Edge
- Select Extensions near the address bar, then select Manage extensions.
- Use an extension’s toggle to turn it off or back on.
- To remove an extension, use the removal option in the extension interface or from its toolbar controls.
- To limit website access, open the extension’s menu and inspect This can read and change site data. Choose the site-access option that suits your needs.
Edge may disable an extension automatically if it tries to change important browser settings—such as the default search engine, new tab page, or site preferences—without permission. If an extension is unexpectedly off, review its details and Edge’s prompt before enabling it again. See Microsoft’s Edge extension instructions and its explanation of extensions Edge turns off.

Manage extensions in Mozilla Firefox
- Open the menu, choose Extensions and themes, then select Extensions to open the Add-ons Manager.
- Use an extension’s controls there to disable, enable, or remove it. The toolbar extensions panel also links to Manage extensions.
- To review permissions, open the extension’s details and select Permissions and data. Firefox shows requested permissions and, where available, controls for optional permissions.
For details on managing add-ons, see Mozilla’s add-on instructions and its guide to the extensions button. On a work or school computer, enterprise policy can lock specified extension IDs so users cannot disable or uninstall them; Mozilla describes this in its Firefox policy reference.
Manage extensions in Safari on Mac
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Clear an extension’s checkbox to turn it off.
- To uninstall it, select the extension and click Uninstall. If it came with an app, Apple says you may also need to delete that app.
Safari also lets you control website access. On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, extensions that require website access are off by default in private windows; you can separately allow an extension in private browsing. Safari profiles have their own extension settings, and extensions start off by default in each new profile. For Apple’s details on access, profiles, and device sharing, see Apple’s Safari extension guide.

Compatible Apple devices may share extensions when the account and iCloud settings support it. Turning an extension off can sync across devices, but Apple says to uninstall it on each device to remove it everywhere.

Work or school browser controls
An organization may manage extensions through browser policy, making ordinary removal or re-enabling unavailable. Chrome notes that an administrator may re-enable unsupported extensions through policy; Firefox policies can lock listed extension IDs. If a control is locked on a work or school device, ask the organization’s IT administrator rather than treating it as a browser error.

Safari on Mac will not let you enable an extension
Apple documents this issue for Safari on Mac. On macOS Catalina 10.15 and later, a protection is intended to stop software from tricking users into enabling extensions; some legitimate screen-recording or accessibility apps can interfere with enabling one.
- Install the latest Apple software updates.
- If the checkbox still cannot be selected, start the Mac in Safe Mode and try enabling the extension there.
- Restart the Mac after the Safe Mode attempt.
See Apple’s Safari extension troubleshooting steps.
