Manage crawl budget by reducing low-value URL generation, making priority product and category pages easy to discover, returning decisive status codes, and keeping your origin fast and available. Use robots.txt for durable crawl exclusions, XML sitemaps for discovery and freshness hints, canonical URLs to consolidate duplicates, and ordinary HTML links for navigation. Verify the result with Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats and URL Inspection, then confirm path-level behavior in server logs.

Crawl budget is not an indexing guarantee: Google may crawl a page and still leave it out of the index when quality, relevance, or demand is insufficient. The practical goal is to ensure Googlebot spends its available requests on URLs that matter to shoppers and that new or changed inventory is found without overloading your servers.

What is crawl budget, and which ecommerce sites need to manage it?

Google defines crawl budget as the set of URLs it can and wants to crawl for a site. “Can” is the crawl-capacity limit imposed by serving health; “wants” is crawl demand, influenced by perceived inventory, popularity, staleness, update frequency, quality, and relevance.

Signal Google’s rough audience threshold What it means operationally
Unique URL inventory 1 million or more pages Parameter combinations, duplicate paths, and expired inventory can create enough noise to warrant a formal crawl-budget program.
Daily-changing inventory 10,000 or more unique pages changing each day Fresh prices, stock, and promotions make discovery and recrawl timing important even if the total site is smaller.
Search Console pattern A large share of URLs marked “Discovered – currently not indexed” Investigate discovery paths, server capacity, and URL quality before adding more pages or links.

These figures are estimates, not a cutoff. A retailer below them should still act when logs show Googlebot spending requests on filters, sessions, duplicate paths, or action URLs; when important launches are discovered slowly; or when host-availability warnings appear in Search Console. Segment analysis by hostname because Google treats each unique hostname as a separate site with its own crawl budget.

How do you audit an ecommerce URL inventory before changing controls?

Start with a pattern-level inventory rather than a list of individual URLs. The objective is to identify which URL families deserve crawling, which should consolidate, and which should never be requested.

  1. Export URL patterns. Combine your router or application route list, XML sitemaps, analytics or merchandising feeds, Search Console examples, and verified Googlebot log entries.
  2. Group by purpose. Separate canonical products, category and editorial pages, faceted filters, sort orders, internal search, sessions, cart and action endpoints, discontinued products, infinite-scroll states, proxies, and error templates.
  3. Measure each group. Record the fields in the table below, then sort by Googlebot request volume and server cost.
  4. Assign ownership. Give every pattern an engineering, SEO, or merchandising owner and a documented indexability intent.
Required field Why it matters
Pattern and example URL Lets teams implement and test a rule without guessing which parameters are covered.
Discovered URL count Shows the size of the generated space, including combinations users rarely request.
Response class Separates 200, 3xx, 4xx, 5xx, and soft-404 behavior.
Canonical target Reveals whether variants consolidate to one preferred URL.
Indexability intent States whether the pattern should be indexed, crawled only for discovery, or excluded entirely.
Last meaningful change Helps distinguish genuinely fresh URLs from repeatedly recrawled static variants.
Googlebot request volume Shows which families consume crawl activity in real traffic.
Owner Prevents rules from becoming unmaintained during catalog or platform changes.

Google identifies faceted-navigation and session identifiers, duplicate content, soft errors, hacked pages, infinite spaces or proxies, and low-quality or spam URLs as common low-value classes. Include them in the audit even when they return technically valid HTML.

How do you stop Google from crawling faceted navigation and filter URLs?

First decide whether a facet combination has unique, valuable search demand. Keep genuinely useful landing pages discoverable and consolidate or exclude combinations that only reorder or duplicate the same inventory.

1. Design a finite URL policy

Document which parameters can create indexable pages, which are allowed only for on-site users, and which should never be generated as crawlable links. Avoid exposing unbounded combinations such as every color, size, brand, price range, sort order, and pagination state when they do not provide distinct content.

2. Consolidate duplicate paths

Choose one canonical product and category URL. Remove alternate paths from navigation where possible, redirect obsolete paths to the preferred URL when the destination is equivalent, and emit a consistent canonical link on the surviving page. Canonicalization helps consolidation; it does not eliminate the cost of generating millions of unnecessary URLs.

3. Block durable non-content variants

Use robots.txt for parameter patterns and action URLs that should not be crawled at all, such as duplicate sort or filter combinations, session identifiers, cart operations, and internal utility endpoints. Test pattern matching against real examples and review rules whenever routing changes.

4. Prevent accidental discovery

Do not place excluded variants in XML sitemaps or prominent crawlable links. Ensure JavaScript, APIs, and infinite-scroll controls do not expose an effectively infinite sequence of URLs when a finite, linked pagination model would serve users and crawlers better.

5. Keep valuable facets deliberate

If a filtered page has unique copy, stable demand, and a defensible canonical URL, give it normal HTML links and include it in a maintained sitemap when it is indexable. Otherwise, leave it as a user-facing navigation state without creating a search-index target.

Which technical controls should you implement first?

Apply controls in an order that removes the largest source of waste while preserving discovery of priority pages.

Use canonical URLs to consolidate duplicates

Canonical tags should agree with internal links, redirects, sitemap entries, and the page’s own preferred URL. Treat conflicting canonicals as an implementation defect, not as a signal Google must resolve for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use robots.txt for stable crawl exclusions

Robots.txt is appropriate when Google should not request a URL family. Do not rotate rules temporarily in the hope that newly available requests will automatically move to product pages; Google says that budget is not automatically reallocated unless the site is already constrained by its capacity limit. A robots exclusion also does not remove a URL from search if other signals leave it known, so pair it with correct removal or indexing signals when visibility matters.

Return 404 or 410 for permanently removed products

When a product is gone and has no equivalent replacement, return a real 404 or 410. Do not render an empty “product unavailable” template with a 200 status: that is a soft 404 and can continue attracting crawl requests. Redirect only when a relevant replacement genuinely exists.

Keep XML sitemaps clean and current

Include important, indexable product, category, and editorial URLs. Update each <lastmod> value when the indexed content meaningfully changes, such as a material product update, not merely when a file is regenerated. Remove URLs that should not appear in Search. A sitemap is a discovery and freshness hint, not an instruction to crawl every listed URL immediately.

Expose priority pages with standard HTML links

Link categories to products, products to relevant categories, and editorial content to the inventory it explains. Use ordinary anchor links with stable destinations; do not make essential discovery depend on clicks, form submissions, or fragile client-side scripts that Googlebot may not execute as intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorten redirect chains

Point links and sitemaps directly to the final canonical URL. Replace multi-hop chains with one redirect where a redirect is necessary, because each hop consumes crawl work and delays discovery.

Can server speed and availability change crawl capacity?

Yes. Google adjusts crawl capacity in response to serving health. Stable or improving latency and time to first byte can allow the limit to rise; higher latency, 5xx responses, and 429 rate limiting can cause Google to crawl less.

Reduce origin work on important responses

  • Cache product and category responses where freshness rules permit.
  • Reduce rendering and backend query cost, especially for pages that assemble large recommendation or facet payloads.
  • Increase connection and origin capacity before major catalog launches.
  • Track latency and error rates separately for HTML, APIs, images, and other hosts.

Support conditional requests

Return HTTP 304 Not Modified for unchanged pages when validators such as ETag or Last-Modified match. Google can reuse its cached copy while your origin avoids retransmitting the full response.

Optimize for access, not vanity speed

Making low-value pages faster does not by itself earn more crawling. Performance work is valuable when it removes a serving bottleneck or helps Google reach important content reliably; it is not a substitute for eliminating low-value URL generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you tell whether Googlebot is spending requests on the wrong URLs?

Use three data sources together because each answers a different question.

Google Search Console Crawl Stats

  • Review request volume and response-status distribution.
  • Check host availability and periods when requests approach the serving limit.
  • Look for increases in 3xx, 4xx, 5xx, or 429 responses after deployments.

URL Inspection

Test representative canonical products, categories, parameter variants, removed products, and sitemap URLs. Investigate “Hostload exceeded” warnings as a serving-capacity problem, not as proof that a page deserves indexing.

Verified server logs

Validate Googlebot by user agent and source, then compare request shares for priority and excluded patterns. Search Console does not provide a URL-filterable crawl history, so logs are required to see path-level behavior over time. Segment by hostname and crawler before calculating shares.

Page Indexing reports

Separate “not discovered,” “crawled,” and “indexed” states before changing controls. A discovery or capacity fix cannot guarantee that Google will include a page; quality and demand still influence indexing.

Why are product pages discovered but not crawled or indexed?

“Discovered” means Google knows a URL but has not necessarily requested it. “Crawled” means it fetched the page; it may still exclude that page from the index. Diagnose the state in order.

When the page is discovered but not crawled

  • Check whether faceted, duplicate, or session URLs consume a large share of Googlebot requests.
  • Review Crawl Stats and logs for host-load warnings, high latency, 5xx errors, or 429 responses.
  • Confirm that the product has a crawlable HTML link from a category, sitemap, or other authoritative page.
  • Remove redirect chains and prevent the product URL from being generated only after user actions.

When the page is crawled but not indexed

  • Verify the canonical points to the intended product URL and that the page is not a duplicate with little unique value.
  • Check for accidental noindex directives, incorrect status codes, or an empty template that resembles a soft 404.
  • Improve the page’s distinct usefulness and ensure it remains available when Google revisits it.

Do not respond to an indexing exclusion by indiscriminately opening every parameter combination. That increases inventory without addressing the reason individual pages are not selected.

Does robots.txt increase crawl budget?

Robots.txt can reduce wasted crawling by preventing requests to durable low-value URL families, but it does not create a guaranteed pool of extra requests for other pages. Google says newly available budget is not automatically shifted unless the site is already at its crawl-capacity limit.

Use it for patterns that should never be fetched, test rules against representative URLs, and keep the file stable. For a removed product, use 404 or 410; for a duplicate that should consolidate, use canonicalization and consistent internal signals. Choose the mechanism according to whether the goal is crawl exclusion, consolidation, removal, or discovery.

Intervention Primary outcome Best use Main risk or limitation
Robots.txt exclusion Stops requests to matched URLs Durable parameter, session, sort, filter, and action patterns Does not by itself remove known URLs from search or guarantee reallocation.
Canonicalization Consolidates duplicate signals Equivalent product or category paths that must remain accessible Does not prevent crawling of every duplicate URL.
404/410 responses Signals permanent removal Discontinued products without a relevant replacement A 200 error template creates a soft 404 and prolongs crawling.
XML sitemaps Discovery and freshness hints Important indexable URLs and meaningful last-modified changes Listing a URL does not compel immediate crawling or indexing.
HTML internal links Reliable discovery paths Priority category, product, and editorial relationships Links to low-value variants can expand the crawlable space.
Performance and capacity work Improves serving headroom High latency, 5xx/429 errors, rendering cost, or host-load warnings Faster low-value pages still waste requests if URL generation remains unchecked.

What operating cadence keeps crawl budget under control?

Run a repeatable review instead of making one large, unmeasured rules change.

  1. Baseline. Export a representative period of logs, Crawl Stats, Page Indexing states, latency, and error rates. Record request share by URL pattern and hostname.
  2. Choose one intervention. For example, block a confirmed duplicate filter pattern or remove a redirect hop. Define the expected change in requests, status codes, latency, or discovery delay.
  3. Deploy with change control. Record the date, affected pattern, rule version, and owner. Keep unrelated routing or performance changes out of the same release when possible.
  4. Validate technically. Test robots matching, status codes, canonicals, sitemap membership, links, and final redirect destinations on representative URLs.
  5. Compare over a representative period. Examine request mix, latency, errors, host availability, discovery delay, and indexing outcomes rather than relying on a single day.
  6. Roll back or expand carefully. If priority URLs lose discovery or errors rise, revert the rule and inspect the pattern boundary before widening it.

Maintain a living URL-policy document so merchandising, SEO, and engineering teams know which parameters are indexable, crawlable-only, or excluded. Revisit it whenever the catalog, faceted navigation, search platform, or hostname structure changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should an ecommerce site review crawl budget?

Review it after major catalog, navigation, hostname, or platform changes and on a recurring schedule that matches your release cycle. High-churn catalogs should inspect logs and Crawl Stats more frequently than stable catalogs; the correct interval depends on how quickly URL patterns and inventory change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a CDN solve crawl-budget problems by itself?

A cache or CDN can lower origin latency and reduce server work, which may help capacity. It cannot decide which duplicate URLs deserve crawling, replace robots and canonical policies, or turn a low-value page into an indexable one.

Should every in-stock product be placed in an XML sitemap?

Include every important, indexable product URL that you want Google to discover, not URLs blocked from crawling, duplicate variants, or pages that should be removed. Keep entries aligned with canonical tags and meaningful content changes so the sitemap remains a trustworthy inventory signal.

What should happen to a discontinued product with a close replacement?

Redirect the old URL to the replacement only when the new item satisfies the same user intent. If no relevant replacement exists, return 404 or 410 instead of serving an empty 200 page.

Is there a guaranteed crawl-rate number I should target?

No universal target or guaranteed percentage lift is published for crawl-budget tactics. Set a site-specific baseline from logs and Crawl Stats, then judge changes by priority-request share, serving health, discovery delay, and indexing outcomes.
