Connected apps let ChatGPT or Gemini retrieve information and perform supported tasks in services you already use. The safest way to manage them is to treat three controls separately: the connection itself, approval settings for actions, and deletion of data already stored in chats, memories, activity logs, or the connected provider. Disconnecting an app stops the connection going forward; it does not automatically erase earlier conversations, saved memories, Gemini Apps Activity, or copies already held by another service.
This guide shows where the controls are, what access they affect, how ChatGPT and Gemini differ, and which cleanup steps you must perform separately.
What does a connected app do in ChatGPT or Gemini?
A connected app gives an AI service permission to use selected information or functions from another account. Depending on the app and the request, the AI may read relevant records, use account context to answer a question, or submit a supported action after you approve it. The exact scope is set by the provider account, the permissions shown during setup, and any plan, country, device, workspace, or product-surface restrictions.
Before selecting Connect or authorizing a provider, open the permission screen and read the requested scopes. Check that the account shown is the one you intend to use. A connection can expose more than a single item: the service may receive the conversation context needed to fulfill your request, while the connected provider continues handling data under its own terms and privacy policy.

Connection controls are not the same as action approvals. An approval preference changes when the AI asks for confirmation; it does not create additional access that the connection did not already grant.
Where do I find connected-app controls?
ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, open Settings and look for the area labeled Plugins, Connected apps, or a similar app-management entry. Labels can differ by product surface and may change as the interface is updated. Review the provider account currently selected and the permissions requested before authorizing anything.
For a managed workspace, an administrator can disable apps for the workspace. If an app is unavailable or its controls are missing, your organization’s policy, account type, plan, region, or the current ChatGPT surface may be responsible.

On desktop, Google’s help currently documents a path through Settings & help > Connected Apps. Some accounts see a newer layout using Customize > Connectors instead. Select an app to connect or disconnect it, then follow the provider’s authorization screen.
The list of available apps is not identical for every person. It can vary by account, country, device, Gemini surface, and administrative settings. Use the labels visible in your own Gemini interface rather than relying on an older screenshot or a path from another account.
How do I disconnect apps from ChatGPT?
Disconnecting removes the active authorization between ChatGPT and the selected provider. It is the right first step when you no longer want ChatGPT to access that account, but it is not a deletion command for material already retained elsewhere.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Open Plugins, Connected apps, or the equivalent app-management page shown for your account.
- Identify the provider account and app you want to stop using.
- Choose Disconnect, Remove connection, or the equivalent action, then confirm.
- Return to the list and verify that the app is no longer shown as connected. If the app belongs to a managed workspace and cannot be removed, ask the workspace administrator to disable it.
Disconnecting prevents new requests from using that authorization. It does not automatically delete old ChatGPT conversations, saved memories, account activity, or information that the connected provider already received.

Can I change ChatGPT’s action-approval behavior without disconnecting?
Yes. ChatGPT documents app-action permissions separately from removing a connection. These settings control whether ChatGPT asks for confirmation before a supported action; they do not broaden the underlying account access.
When to require confirmation
- Use confirmation for actions that create, send, edit, purchase, or otherwise change information in the connected service.
- Review the request details shown in the confirmation prompt before approving it.
- Keep in mind that a confirmation setting is not a substitute for reviewing the original authorization scopes.
When an app is unavailable
If you cannot find an approval option, the app may support read-only access, the feature may not be available on your plan or surface, or a workspace administrator may have disabled it. Changing a confirmation preference cannot restore an app that policy or availability rules have removed.
How do I manage connected apps in Gemini?
Gemini’s Connected Apps or Connectors page is where you add and remove app authorizations. Manage one app at a time so you can verify which account is being changed.
- Open Gemini on the desktop or device where you use the connection.
- Open Settings & help > Connected Apps. If that path is not present, open Customize > Connectors.
- Select the connected app you want to inspect.
- Review the account and available permissions.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm. To add an app, choose the connect option and complete the provider’s authorization flow.
Google’s available-app list differs by account, country, device, and Gemini product surface. A connection visible on the web may not appear in a mobile app, and a work or school administrator can impose additional restrictions.
How do Gemini’s “Always ask” and “Always allow” settings work?
For supported task actions, Gemini can expose per-action approval choices. Always ask requires a confirmation each time the action is requested. Always allow lets the supported action proceed without a new prompt under the conditions defined by that app.
These choices affect approval behavior, not the original authorization scope. If you want to stop Gemini from using the account at all, disconnect the app in Connected Apps. Some approvals can be narrower at the individual-thread level, so check whether a setting applies only to the current conversation or more broadly.
Review an action before allowing it
- Confirm the destination account and the records or objects the action will affect.
- Use Always ask for actions with external side effects, such as sending or changing information.
- Use a thread-level approval when you want a temporary, narrower permission rather than a standing preference.
- Disconnect the app when you no longer need any access.
What data does ChatGPT share with connected apps?
To fulfill a request, ChatGPT may send relevant conversation context to the connected app. The app then handles that information under its own terms and privacy policy. The amount and type of context depends on the request and the app’s integration; do not assume that every connection has identical scope.

Google services connected to ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Google-app guidance states that information accessed directly through connected Google apps is not used to train generalized models, with specific exceptions. Those exceptions include feedback submissions, information you manually copy, paste, or upload into a ChatGPT conversation, and content included in a response. This statement is specific to the documented Google-app scenario and should not be generalized to every connected app or to content you supply manually.
If ChatGPT Memory is enabled, eligible information from a connected Google app can inform personalization. Disconnecting the app does not by itself remove memories that were already saved; review and delete those memories separately if needed.
What you should verify before connecting
- The provider account selected in the authorization window.
- Whether the integration can read, create, edit, or send information.
- Whether your workspace administrator controls availability.
- How the connected provider’s own retention and deletion policies apply.
What data does Gemini retain or share after I connect an app?
Gemini’s Connected Apps controls and Gemini Apps Activity controls are separate. Disconnecting an app does not delete Gemini Apps Activity. Deleting activity also does not remove information that another connected service has already received.
Google notes that changes or deletions made in a connected service can take days to affect Gemini’s experience. During that period, recommendations or responses may not immediately reflect the change. Review Gemini Apps Activity and its future-use settings separately from the connection page.
Google also explains that some public information from Google services can be used independently of personal connected-app access. Disconnecting a personal account therefore does not block Gemini from using public web or service information that is available through other means.

Gemini Apps Activity settings affect how future activity may be used for product improvement, including training, subject to Google’s stated conditions, prior review, and retention choices. Changing that setting is different from disconnecting an app and different again from deleting activity already recorded.
Does disconnecting an app delete chats, memories, or activity?
No. Treat disconnection as an access change, not a data-erasure request. The remaining cleanup depends on where the information exists.

Because each system has its own retention rules, deleting a chat in one service cannot be assumed to delete a provider-side copy, and deleting a provider record cannot be assumed to remove AI activity.
How should I clean up data after disconnecting?
ChatGPT cleanup
- Disconnect the app first so new requests cannot use the authorization.
- Search your ChatGPT history for conversations that contain information retrieved from that app.
- Delete conversations that should no longer remain in ChatGPT.
- Open memory management and remove any saved memories derived from the connected account.
- If you manually pasted or uploaded provider data into a chat, treat that material as conversation content and review it independently of the app connection.
Gemini cleanup
- Disconnect the app from Connected Apps or Connectors.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and review the relevant entries.
- Delete activity according to the retention options shown for your account.
- Review future-use settings that govern product improvement and training.
- Sign in to the connected provider and use its own deletion or privacy controls for information it already received.
Allow for processing time when Google says changes can take days to affect the Gemini experience. Keep records of which account and service you changed if you are handling sensitive work or a managed organization account.

What is different between ChatGPT and Gemini’s controls?
Neither service is universally “more private.” The practical difference depends on whether your priority is approval prompts, memory and personalization, activity retention, or provider-side deletion.

What should I check before authorizing any app?
- Account identity: Make sure the authorization window shows the intended personal, work, or school account.
- Requested scopes: Distinguish read access from permission to create, edit, send, or delete.
- Action defaults: Choose confirmation prompts for side-effecting actions.
- Workspace policy: A managed administrator may restrict or disable integrations.
- Data path: Identify what goes to the AI service, what goes to the connected provider, and which policy governs each copy.
- Exit plan: Know where to disconnect, delete chats or activity, clear memories, and request provider-side deletion before you connect.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The app is missing from the list
Check the account, country, device, plan, and product surface first. In a work or school environment, ask whether an administrator has disabled the integration. An app available on desktop may not be available in a mobile surface.
Disconnect appears to work, but old information is still visible
That is expected when the information exists in a chat, memory, Gemini Apps Activity, or the provider’s account. Perform the corresponding deletion step instead of disconnecting repeatedly.
An action runs without the prompt you expected
Review the app’s approval preference. Gemini may be set to Always allow, while ChatGPT’s action-permission behavior may be configured separately from the connection. Change the approval setting, then test with a low-risk request.

Provider-side deletion and Gemini experience updates can take time. Sign out and back in only after checking the relevant activity and provider controls; a delayed update does not necessarily mean the disconnect failed.

You cannot remove a workspace connection
Managed-workspace policy may reserve that control for an administrator. Contact the workspace administrator and ask them to disable the app or clarify the organization’s retention policy.
Which controls should I use for a sensitive account?
Use the least access necessary, require confirmation for actions with external effects, and avoid manually pasting provider data into a conversation unless you accept the additional retention and policy implications. When the task is complete, disconnect the app and then review chats, memories, activity, and provider-side records separately. This sequence limits future access while addressing copies that already exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I still see a connected service after deleting a chat?
A chat deletion affects the conversation record, not necessarily the authorization listed under Connected Apps or the provider’s own account records. Check the connection page and the provider’s privacy controls separately.
Will changing Gemini Apps Activity erase information in my Google account?
No. Gemini Apps Activity controls activity held by Gemini. Information already stored in another connected service must be managed through that service’s account and deletion tools.
Can my employer stop me from connecting an app in ChatGPT?
Yes. A workspace administrator can disable apps for a managed workspace, so an unavailable connection may reflect organization policy rather than a personal account problem.
Does disconnecting a personal Google account block Gemini from public information?
No. Google says some public information can be used independently of personal connected-app access, so disconnecting your account does not remove public web or service information from Gemini’s possible sources.
