On desktop Chrome, open a New Tab and select AI Mode beside the search box, or press Tab and then Enter. Chrome does not currently document a personal switch that removes the AI Mode entry point for everyone; its availability depends on your account, device, Chrome version, rollout status, and (on managed computers) administrator policy.
You can still control the surrounding data and recommendations. Delete individual AI Mode searches or all AI Mode searches, turn off cloud-based typed suggestions while retaining local history suggestions, change New Tab shortcuts and cards, and disable or tune the Discover feed on Android. The right setting depends on whether you want to remove an AI Mode button, stop autocomplete from being sent to a search engine, erase activity, or simply declutter the page.
What can you control on Chrome’s New Tab?
Chrome’s New Tab surfaces several independent features. Changing one does not automatically change the others, so identify the item you want to affect before changing a setting.

These controls have different scopes. Turning off search suggestions is not the same as deleting history, and hiding a New Tab card does not remove AI Mode activity from your account.

How do I open AI Mode from a new tab?
Use the New Tab search box to start an AI Mode conversation, add context, and submit a question. The documented workflow requires you to be signed in to Chrome and not browsing in Incognito mode.
- Open a new tab with the plus button, Ctrl+L followed by Alt+Enter, or your normal New Tab shortcut.
- Select AI Mode beside the search box. If the button is not shown, use the keyboard alternative: press Tab until the AI Mode control is focused, then press Enter.
- In the AI Mode panel, open the plus or context menu if you need to provide additional material. Depending on the rollout, you can add recent tabs, images, or files.
- Choose an available tool, such as Canvas, Create Images, or Deep Search, when it fits the task. Tool availability can vary by account and device.
- Type your question and submit it. Chrome opens the AI Mode results page with the response and any supporting search experience provided for your account.
AI Mode in Chrome is not available to everyone or on every device at this time. Google is expanding it beyond the United States and adding languages, so the controls you see may differ from another Chrome installation.
Can I remove the AI Mode button from Chrome’s New Tab?
There is no documented personal setting that universally hides the AI Mode button while leaving every other New Tab feature unchanged. The button is a product entry point controlled by availability and rollout, not by the desktop Customize Chrome options for shortcuts and cards.

If you simply do not want to use it
Leave the button untouched and continue using the regular search field or your normal shortcuts. Hiding shortcuts, changing the shortcut type, or dismissing a resume-browsing card changes those elements only; it does not remove AI Mode.
If this is a work or school computer
An administrator can control AI Mode search recommendations in the address bar and New Tab search box with the Chrome Enterprise policy named AIModeSettings. If Chrome says it is managed, the policy may explain why the control is present, absent, or locked. Only the organization’s administrator can change that policy.

If the button appeared after an update
Chrome’s rollout is staged. The initial desktop activity was associated with Chrome 138, with additional entry points in Chrome 139 across desktop and mobile platforms. A button appearing after an update does not mean that every profile or device has the same controls.
How do I delete AI Mode history?
Delete searches from the AI Mode interface first, then check account activity if you need the records removed immediately. Google notes that deleted AI Mode searches can remain visible in My Activity for a short period and are automatically deleted there within 24 hours.
- Open a New Tab and select AI Mode.
- Choose AI Mode history in the AI Mode interface.
- For one item, open its menu and choose the delete option for that search.
- To remove the listed AI Mode searches together, choose Delete all and confirm.
- If a deleted item still appears in your account, open My Activity or your Google Search history and remove it there manually.
Deleting AI Mode history is an account-activity action. It does not erase Chrome’s entire browsing history, cookies, downloaded files, or saved passwords. Those are separate data categories with separate controls.
How do I turn off search suggestions but keep my history?
Disable Improve search suggestions. This stops Chrome from sending what you type to the default search engine for suggestions, while local suggestions based on browsing or search history may still appear.
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select Settings.
- Open You and Google.
- Select Google services.
- Turn Improve search suggestions off.
The setting changes typed-search autocomplete behavior; it is not a history-wipe switch. A suggestion generated from information already stored locally can continue to appear, so seeing a suggestion after disabling the option does not necessarily mean that your text is still being sent to the default search engine.

What this setting does not change
- It does not delete existing searches from AI Mode history or My Activity.
- It does not remove local browsing-history suggestions.
- It does not hide New Tab shortcuts, resume cards, or Discover recommendations.
- It does not control an organization’s AI Mode policy.
How do I clean up other New Tab suggestions on desktop?
Use Customize Chrome for the visual elements below the search box. These controls are separate from AI Mode history and the search-suggestion privacy setting.

Change or hide shortcuts
- Open a New Tab.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Under the shortcuts option, choose My shortcuts to maintain your own links or Most visited sites to let Chrome generate them from visit frequency.
- Use the available hide-shortcuts control if you want the shortcut row removed from the page.
Changing the shortcut mode affects what is displayed on the New Tab page; it does not delete bookmarks or browsing history.
Hide a resume-browsing card
- Open a New Tab and locate the resume-browsing card.
- Open the card’s menu.
- Choose the option to hide that card.
The documented action is card-specific. It is not a global switch for every recommendation Chrome may show in future.
How do I manage New Tab recommendations on Android?
Android’s Customize new tab page contains controls for shortcuts, New Tab page cards, the Discover feed, interests, and the activity used to personalize recommendations.
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet and create a new tab.
- Open Customize new tab page.
- Adjust My shortcuts and New Tab page cards as needed.
- Turn the Discover feed off if you do not want article recommendations below the search area.
- For a narrower change, mark individual topics or publishers as Not interested.
- Review the related account-activity control when you want to change what Chrome uses to personalize recommendations.
Discover controls affect the recommendation feed, not the existence of AI Mode searches or the desktop Improve search suggestions setting. Android’s labels and available options can vary with Chrome version, account, and region.

Why is AI Mode missing from my New Tab?
A missing button usually indicates availability or eligibility rather than a broken search box. Check the following conditions in order.
- Rollout status: Google is enabling AI Mode gradually, including expansion outside the United States and to additional languages.
- Device and version: The New Tab entry point is tied to Chrome’s staged releases; the rollout notes associate early desktop activity with version 138 and later entry points with version 139 on desktop and mobile.
- Sign-in: The documented New Tab workflow requires you to be signed in to Chrome.
- Incognito: The workflow is not documented for Incognito mode; open a regular tab while signed in.
- Organization management: A work or school administrator may use
AIModeSettingsto control AI Mode recommendations or entry points. - Language or country: Expansion is ongoing, so a supported account in one location may receive the feature before an otherwise similar account elsewhere.
Updating Chrome can place your installation on a newer release, but an update alone cannot guarantee access because account, geography, language, and policy checks still apply.
What does the Chrome rollout and policy mean for privacy and control?
AI Mode, typed autocomplete, New Tab cards, and Discover recommendations use different controls and can have different data paths. Turning off one surface should not be described as turning off all personalization.

Google’s published wording is explicit: “AI Mode in Chrome isn’t available to everyone or on every device at this time.” Treat the presence or absence of a button as a rollout state, not as proof that your settings are incorrect.
What should I change for each common problem?
Choose the smallest control that matches the nuisance. This avoids deleting more activity than you intended.

- “The AI Mode button is missing.” Check sign-in status, regular versus Incognito mode, Chrome version, language, country, and organization management before troubleshooting the installation.
What can you do when a setting appears not to work?
The setting is missing
Confirm that you are using the correct platform. Improve search suggestions is documented under desktop Chrome’s Google services settings, while Discover and New Tab card controls are documented for Android. Labels can change as Chrome rolls out features.
Suggestions still appear after the privacy setting is off
Check whether the suggestion is local. Chrome can continue showing suggestions derived from browsing or search history even after it stops sending typed text to the default search engine for suggestions.
An AI Mode search remains in activity
Allow up to 24 hours for automatic removal from My Activity after deleting it in AI Mode. If you need it gone sooner, remove it manually from My Activity or Search history.
A work profile overrides your choice
Look for a “managed by your organization” notice in Chrome. The AIModeSettings policy can control AI Mode recommendations, so a local user setting may be unavailable or ineffective until the administrator changes the policy.

Does turning off Improve search suggestions delete my Chrome browsing history?
No. It changes how typed text is used for search suggestions and leaves existing browsing history intact. Local history-based suggestions can still be displayed until you remove that history separately.
Can I delete one AI Mode conversation without deleting all of them?
Yes. Open AI Mode history, find the specific search, and use its individual delete command. Reserve Delete all for a complete cleanup.
Will deleting AI Mode history remove files or images I added to a prompt?
The documented control deletes the AI Mode search record. It does not state that local files, downloads, or images stored elsewhere on your device are deleted, so manage those separately in your operating system or cloud storage.
