For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, start with the game’s updated image and HDR calibration controls, then make small changes and check them against text, the HUD, and varied scenes. On PC, consider a ReShade preset or color-grading mod only if the built-in options do not get you close. There is no established universal “painterly” preset, and a look that works in one scene can obscure detail or reduce contrast in another.
First confirm your platform and that you are running the remaster. It launched on September 29, 2026, as a free same-platform upgrade for existing owners. Its rendering changes include updated tone mapping, more HDR calibration options, updated textures and models based on HD Reworked Project assets, and revisions to lighting, bloom, reflections, and other effects. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement and its remaster change list describe the update. Settings and mod advice for an older PC build or preset may not carry over.
Start with the remaster’s built-in image controls
Open the game’s image and HDR calibration options and adjust one control at a time. The remaster updates tone mapping and adds HDR calibration options, but the official change list does not prescribe a setting for a painterly look. Treat the controls as a way to explore the image on your own display, not as a recipe with a guaranteed result.
- Note or capture your current settings so you can restore them.
- Change one image or HDR control by a modest amount.
- Compare the result with your previous image under the same conditions.
- Keep the change only if it adds the softer, more color-driven impression you want without hiding important forms or detail.
Make sure your comparison uses the same display mode and HDR state. A change that looks pleasing in one viewing setup may look different with another display or calibration.

Use a small set of repeatable checks after each adjustment. Include dialogue and subtitles, the HUD, a dark interior or night scene, bright daylight, foliage, faces, and high-contrast edges. The goal is not simply to soften the image: recognizable shapes, useful contrast, and visible detail should remain.
- Text and HUD: Back off if subtitles or interface elements lose contrast against their backgrounds.
- Shadows: Back off if dark areas merge and you can no longer distinguish objects or surfaces.
- Foliage: Watch for leaves and branches collapsing into a noisy or indistinct mass.
- Edges: Reject an adjustment if boundaries look artificially outlined.
- Bright areas: Check daylight and pale surfaces for lost separation or detail.
These are practical checks for your own setup, not results from a controlled readability test. “Painterly” is subjective, so keep the version that suits your taste while preserving the information you need to play.
On PC, add post-processing only if the built-in options are not enough
A ReShade preset or color-grading mod can offer further control over the image. Before installing one, check its current file notes, requirements, and explicit compatibility information for the September 2026 remaster. The RenoDX listing describes post-processing and color-grading adjustments and cautions users about ReShade presets and HDR.
Do not assume an older preset works with the remaster just because it was made for The Witcher 3. The available information does not establish which community presets have been updated and tested across the remaster, different GPUs, HDR setups, and displays. If a mod’s current notes or version information do not confirm compatibility, treat it as unconfirmed rather than relying on its screenshots or older instructions.

Evaluate a preset across weather, time, and locations
A fixed post-processing preset can change the appearance of different environments unevenly. The Wild Hunt Re-Imagined page identifies variation across weather, time of day, and interiors and exteriors as a limitation. Compare a candidate in several locations, including both bright and dark scenes, before deciding to keep it; a single screenshot cannot show how consistently it behaves during play.
Do not automatically install the old HD Reworked mod
The remaster already updates textures and models based on HD Reworked Project assets, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s change list. That does not establish that every asset or feature from the older mod is included, but it does mean the old mod should not be presented as a requirement for the remaster. Its Nexus listing includes OldGen-specific directions and optional ReShade information; those details do not prove current remaster compatibility.

Choose an approach by its trade-offs
| Approach | What it can change | Compatibility and consistency | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in image and HDR controls | Uses the remaster’s updated tone mapping and HDR calibration options. | Part of the remaster; the official notes do not identify an optimal painterly setting. | Compare one modest change at a time; check text, HUD, shadows, highlights, and detail. |
| Color-grading mod | Can alter the image’s color grading or post-processing. | Remaster compatibility is not established by the available listing information. | Read the mod’s current requirements and version notes; check HDR behavior and scene-to-scene consistency. |
| ReShade preset | Adds a post-processing layer that may shift color and image character. | Compatibility with the September 2026 remaster is unconfirmed unless the preset’s current notes establish it. A fixed look can vary with weather, time, and location. | Check current remaster-specific notes, HDR cautions, installation requirements, and multiple scenes before keeping it. |
No cited source supplies a measured performance comparison or a controlled winner for readability. The useful choice depends on your platform, version, HDR setup, and whether the image remains legible in the places you play.

CD PROJEKT RED describes REDkit as a toolkit for editing game content such as quests, items, characters, animations, storylines, and territories. It belongs to the broader modding ecosystem, but it is not a consumer post-processing product for applying a painterly look.
