You can make money selling creator merch by offering products your audience actually wants, choosing where to sell them, and setting prices that cover production, shipping, platform fees, refunds, and promotion. A connected store, a marketplace such as Etsy, or your own storefront can work; print-on-demand avoids holding the same inventory as bulk production, but it does not guarantee a profit. There is no universal creator-merch earnings figure established by the cited official sources.
1. Start with a product your audience would want
Build around an original design, phrase, or idea that fits your creator identity and audience. Ask viewers what they would use or wear, or test a small range before committing to a large catalog. This is a practical way to limit guesswork, not a guarantee of demand.
Use only artwork, names, logos, characters, and other material you have the rights to sell. A product can be popular and still create legal or platform problems if it relies on someone else’s intellectual property without permission.
2. Choose how to make and fulfill it
Print-on-demand
A print-on-demand (POD) provider makes an item after a customer orders it, reducing the need to buy and store a bulk run in advance. The trade-off is that production and shipping costs affect what remains from each sale. Printful’s Etsy integration information describes its fulfillment and shipping workflow and cautions that profitability depends on pricing, production, shipping, marketplace fees, and other costs.

Use an Etsy production partner
Etsy defines a production partner as an outside party that physically produces items from a seller’s original designs. If a partner helps make an item, disclose that assistance on applicable listings and follow Etsy’s seller policies. See Etsy’s Creativity Standards and Seller Policy.
Make and ship items yourself
In-house production gives you direct control over making, packing, and shipping orders, but requires equipment, materials, space, and time. A heat press or other specialized equipment is optional: it is relevant if you choose to make apparel yourself, not a prerequisite for selling merch. You can also outsource production instead.
3. Pick where to sell
YouTube Shopping with a connected store
Eligible creators can connect a store and feature their own products in channel surfaces and tagged videos, Shorts, and live streams. Eligibility, supported retailers, and feature availability can vary; check current YouTube Shopping eligibility and setup guidance before planning around a specific feature.

YouTube distinguishes sales of a creator’s own merch from commissions on other retailers’ products tagged in content. For your own merch, the official retailer or platform—not Google—is responsible for merchandising, warehousing, fulfillment, refunds, customer service, inventory management, and creator payment. Review YouTube’s guidance on merch retailers and platforms to understand the roles involved.

A marketplace offers a place to list products, but you still need to meet its rules for what you sell and how you describe production. Etsy allows seller-designed items made with production assistance when the applicable production partner is disclosed. Read the live Seller Policy when setting up or updating listings.
Your own storefront
A standalone store gives you a direct selling destination that you can promote through social channels. Compare platform and payment charges, how customers will find the store, and who will handle fulfillment, returns, and questions. A connected store’s retailer or platform may take on sales operations; in other arrangements, more of that work may remain with you.

4. Calculate whether each item can leave a contribution
For every product, estimate the amount left before your general business overhead:
Contribution before creator overhead = customer payment − production cost − shipping paid by seller − marketplace/store and payment fees − expected refunds or returns − discounts or ad costs.

Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy, reviewed October 3, 2026, lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed listing price plus shipping and gift wrapping, and a $0.20 listing fee. These are not necessarily all seller costs: taxes, location, payment processing, and other charges may matter. Check the live Etsy fees policy for your circumstances before publishing a price.
5. Set a transparent price and checkout
Choose a price that accounts for the costs above and leaves room for the work involved in running the offer. Explain the product, shipping charge, delivery estimate, and return terms clearly. In the United States, FTC guidance says certain charges left out of an advertised total, such as shipping or taxes, must be disclosed before payment and the final amount shown prominently. This is U.S. guidance; requirements depend on the jurisdiction and transaction. See the FTC guidance on fees and total prices.

Show the product in context and direct viewers to the correct listing. Give accurate details about fit, materials, shipping, and returns so customers know what they are buying. Eligible YouTube creators can tag connected-store products in supported content and review Shopping analytics; check current YouTube Shopping guidance for the available tools.

Review actual orders, costs, fees, returns, and customer feedback before changing your product mix or pricing. Gross sales are not the same as your payout, and neither is the same as profit after costs. Do not assume that views or tags will translate into a particular sales result.
