To make a horror game less scary, adjust the setting that matches what is bothering you: raise brightness for poor visibility, lower music or ambient audio for sound intensity, reduce camera motion if movement is uncomfortable, or switch to Story or Easy if combat pressure is the problem. These changes can make play more manageable, but they do not necessarily remove frightening scenes, creatures, or jumpscares. Start in the game’s Options or Settings menu, change one thing at a time, and check whether the adjustment helps without hiding useful information.
Which setting should I change first?
Start by identifying the specific source of stress rather than turning every setting down at once. Darkness, sudden sounds, sustained ambience, camera motion, disturbing images, and difficult combat call for different adjustments. A change aimed at one trigger may leave the others untouched: brighter rooms do not quiet a jumpscare, and easier combat does not necessarily change the horror presentation.
Use this quick guide to choose a starting point:
| If the main problem is… | Try first | What the change does not necessarily affect |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms or objects are hard to see | Raise brightness gradually; check contrast, HDR, or visibility options | Frightening imagery, story scenes, or sudden sounds |
| Music or atmosphere feels overwhelming | Lower music and ambient audio independently | Dialogue or important gameplay sounds if those have separate controls |
| Sound is hard to follow at lower volume | Enable subtitles or captions | The impact of the underlying sound |
| Camera movement adds discomfort | Look for motion-sickness presets, camera shake, head-bob, or motion blur controls | Disturbing images or sound intensity |
| Combat pressure makes play stressful | Choose Story or Easy; look for separate gameplay assists | The game’s horror scenes or content |
| A particular scene or image is the concern | Look for content warnings, concealment, phobia modes, or scene-skip controls | A warning alone does not alter the scene |
Menus and available settings differ by game, platform, and edition. Check both the title screen and pause menu, then consult the official manual for the version you are playing if a control is difficult to find.

Brightness, audio, motion, difficulty, and content controls are not interchangeable. Brightness and contrast address visibility; independent volume sliders address particular sound channels; camera options target movement; difficulty and gameplay assists address mechanical pressure; and warnings or scene controls concern specific content. First decide which of those problems you want to change. If more than one is bothering you, handle them separately rather than expecting one setting to cover all of them.

Also check the scope of an option. A control may apply across the game, appear only for a particular scene, or be unavailable during play and require returning to the title screen. The game’s menu description or official manual is the best way to confirm what an option does and when it can be changed. Finally, consider the trade-off: reducing an audio channel may also reduce useful cues, while increasing brightness can make the image look washed out. A good adjustment reduces the relevant trigger without removing information you still want.
How can I make a dark horror game easier to see?
Raise brightness in small steps until you can identify rooms and interactable objects without washing out the image. If the game offers contrast, HDR, colorblind support, or other visibility controls, test those too; they may improve recognition in ways a brightness slider alone does not.
Adjust visibility without flattening the image
Brightness can help when you are straining to see where to go or what you can interact with. Increase it gradually, then check both a dark area and a brighter one. The aim is usable visibility, not a uniformly bright picture: excessive brightness can wash out the image and change how the game looks without removing its frightening content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Contrast and HDR are separate controls in some games. If present, adjust them carefully and reassess what is actually difficult to see. Colorblind support or another high-visibility option may help distinguish objects, but those controls are available only when a particular game provides them.
Resident Evil Resistance documents brightness, HDR, colorblind support, and other display options. That is a useful example of the kinds of controls a title may include, not a standard feature list for every horror game. If the brightness slider alone does not make objects readable, inspect the available display options rather than assuming that all visibility controls are grouped under the same label.
What brightness cannot fix
Display adjustments change visibility, not the story, creature design, or sudden events. If the problem is an image you find disturbing, look for content-specific controls rather than assuming a brighter screen will make it less frightening. If it is a loud sound, use the audio menu instead.
How do I turn down scary sounds without losing dialogue?
Use separate audio sliders when the game provides them. Lower music or ambient audio first if those are the main source of tension, while keeping character speech and gameplay-critical effects at a level you can understand.

Work with separate audio channels
Look under Audio or Sound for independent controls for music, sound effects, ambient audio, and speech or dialogue. Not every game provides all of these sliders, and their labels vary. Separate controls are more targeted than lowering the master volume: you can reduce the continuous musical or environmental intensity without automatically lowering every other sound channel.
There is a trade-off. Sound effects may carry useful gameplay information, so lowering them too far can make important events harder to notice. Dialogue may contain instructions or story information. After changing a slider, play a short section and check whether you can still follow speech and recognize sounds that matter to you.

The IGDA Game Accessibility Special Interest Group notes that “Being able to tailor volume levels can aid comprehension and comfort levels.” In practice, the useful setting is the one that reduces the sound trigger while preserving the information you want to hear. Steam’s accessibility documentation likewise recommends separate controls for music, sound effects, ambient audio, and character speech. These recommendations explain why independent sliders are more useful for targeted adjustment than a single master-volume control when the game offers them.
What if jumpscares are the problem?
First distinguish between a sudden sound and a sudden visual event. If the sound is the main trigger, lowering the relevant sound-effects channel may reduce its volume, provided the game has a separate slider. If sustained music or ambience is what keeps tension high between events, lower those channels instead. A master-volume control can lower everything, but it may also make dialogue and useful effects harder to hear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLowering a sound channel does not necessarily remove a jumpscare, and the game may not offer a setting that suppresses sudden events. Check for a title-specific content or audio option if you need more than a volume adjustment. Do not assume that a warning, difficulty mode, or brightness change will alter a sound event; each addresses a different part of the experience.
Use subtitles or captions when listening less
If you lower dialogue or other audio, enable subtitles or captions to keep spoken information accessible. Check the caption options, if available, for speaker names or descriptions of sounds. The detail and availability of captions vary by game, and captions do not necessarily lessen the effect of a frightening sound that still plays.
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends captions and alternate channels for audio information. If the game does not offer the caption detail you need, lowering the relevant volume channel may still help, but you may have less access to information conveyed only through sound. Captions are a way to preserve some information when listening less; they are not a replacement for a sound filter, and not every game describes every sound onscreen.
Which settings help with motion or visual discomfort?
Look for camera-shake, head-bob, motion-blur, field-of-view, or motion-sickness options in Display, Video, Accessibility, or Gameplay. These controls can make movement more comfortable, but their availability and effect are specific to each game.
Try motion-related controls one at a time
A motion-sickness preset may apply a group of visual or camera adjustments. If the game offers one, test it first; otherwise, inspect individual controls such as camera shake, head-bob, or motion blur. Change one option, play briefly, and assess whether it addresses the movement that bothers you.
Resident Evil 4’s official manual documents a motion-sickness preset and related camera settings. That is an example of what one game provides, not a guarantee that another title will have the same controls or menu names. Field-of-view is another possible setting to inspect, but adjust it only if it is available and seems relevant to your comfort.
Motion controls are distinct from brightness and audio controls. If reducing camera movement helps but the remaining problem is a disturbing image or loud sound, revisit the matching content or audio settings rather than continuing to change unrelated display options. A preset may combine several adjustments, so check its description and test the result before changing additional controls.

Will lowering difficulty make the game less frightening?
Story or Easy difficulty can reduce the pressure of combat and other mechanical barriers, making it easier to keep progressing. It is not a content filter: choosing a lower difficulty does not necessarily change frightening scenes, sounds, or imagery.
Choose the kind of help you need
Begin with Story or Easy if combat is the main problem. Then look for more specific assists, such as aim help, reduced enemy pressure, or simpler timing demands, when the game offers them. A granular option can address one barrier without changing every part of the challenge.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 states: “The level of difficulty that a player experiences isn’t defined by the game.” Its guidance emphasizes that players can have different abilities and that games benefit from multiple difficulty levels and configurable mechanics. That is why the best adjustment is the one that removes the barrier you are encountering, not necessarily the lowest setting available.
What a difficulty setting changes—and what it may leave alone
Difficulty is about the gameplay barriers the title adjusts; it should not be treated as a promise to reduce the horror presentation. For example, Dead Space lists Story, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Impossible difficulties. The presence of those modes establishes the choices in that game, not a universal set of options or a guarantee that every aspect of play changes in a particular way.
If the trouble is a disturbing scene rather than a difficult encounter, inspect content options separately. If it is a particular movement or timing demand, look for a corresponding assist. A single difficulty selection may not address either concern.
Difficulty is also subjective: a mode name alone cannot tell you exactly which barrier it changes or how much it changes it. Read the game’s description of its options when available. If you want to reduce combat pressure but keep another part of play challenging, look for a specific assist or configurable mechanic rather than assuming that selecting a lower overall mode will make only the encounter you dislike easier.
Can I get a warning before a disturbing scene?
Check for content warnings, scene-specific controls, concealment or phobia modes, and scene-skip options. These features are title-specific. A warning can give advance notice, but it does not itself alter or remove the material that follows.
Dead Space’s official PC resource documents an optional “Show Content Warning” setting for potentially disturbing scenes. That example is useful when looking for a warning feature, but it does not establish that other games have the same setting. Read the option’s description carefully so you know whether it provides notice, changes what is shown, or allows a scene to be skipped.
Warnings, concealment, phobia modes, and skip controls can have different purposes; finding one does not mean the game offers all the others. If a specific scene is your concern, look for an option that explicitly describes what it changes. A warning gives notice, while a content alteration or skip would need to be stated separately. If no matching option exists, brightness or a lower difficulty should not be expected to change that scene.

How should I change settings without making the game harder to follow?
Use a short test-and-adjust loop: locate the relevant menu, change one setting, play a brief section, and decide whether the original trigger is reduced and useful information remains available. This makes it easier to identify what helped instead of making several changes whose effects are hard to separate.
- Open the settings menu. Check Options or Settings from the title screen or pause menu. Inspect Accessibility, Audio, Display or Video, Subtitles or Captions, and Difficulty or Gameplay.
- Match the control to the trigger. For visibility, start with brightness. For sound intensity, check independent audio channels. For motion, inspect camera or motion controls. For combat pressure, try a lower difficulty or a specific assist. For disturbing scenes, look for content-specific options.
- Change one setting. Avoid changing several controls at once; otherwise, you may not know which adjustment helped or which one removed useful information.
- Test a short section. Check the trigger you are addressing as well as anything you still need to see, hear, or understand.
- Keep, refine, or undo the change. If the setting helps but hides useful information, adjust it again. If it does not address the trigger, return to the menu and try a control aimed more directly at that problem.
- Check when and where the option applies. Some settings may be global, scene-specific, or available only from a particular menu. Confirm the scope in the game or its official manual for your platform and edition.
A practical order for a first settings pass
If you are unsure where to begin, start with the concern that is most immediate rather than making every available option less intense. For a visibility problem, make a small brightness adjustment and check whether you can identify rooms and objects. For sound, lower music or ambience independently before changing dialogue or effects. For motion, test a relevant camera control or preset. For combat pressure, try Story or Easy or a specific assist. For a disturbing sequence, look for a content-specific option and read what it actually does.
After each test, ask two questions: did the change reduce the trigger I chose, and did it make something I still need harder to see, hear, or understand? If the answer to the first is no, the setting may not address the problem. If the answer to the second is yes, refine or undo it. This keeps adjustments targeted and makes it easier to combine settings only when they address separate concerns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can’t I find the same setting in another horror game?
Accessibility and presentation controls are not standardized across titles. Menu names, options, and when they can be changed vary by game, platform, and edition, so one game’s feature list is not a reliable checklist of what another game supports.

These are examples from specific titles, not promises that the same settings appear elsewhere.
If an option is missing from the pause menu, check the title-screen settings or the official manual for your exact version. A setting may be elsewhere, may require a different menu, or may simply not be offered by that game. Avoid assuming that a control exists based on another title’s menu.
It is useful to search by the problem as well as by the menu label. A game might group a control under Accessibility, Audio, Display, Video, or Gameplay, and labels vary. The official manual for the platform and edition you are playing can help confirm the exact name and location; instructions for another version may not match your menus.
What if no single adjustment makes the game comfortable?
Combine only the changes that address separate triggers. For example, a player bothered by both sustained ambience and combat pressure may lower ambient audio and choose an easier mode; someone struggling with darkness and movement may adjust visibility and camera controls. Each change should be evaluated for its own effect.

There is no single setting that guarantees a horror game will feel comfortable. An adjustment can improve one part of play while leaving another intact, and a title may not offer the precise control you want. A targeted combination is more informative than a blanket change: lower the channels that are too intense, preserve the audio or visual information you rely on, and use separate gameplay or content options for separate problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do horror-game accessibility settings affect achievements or trophies?
That depends on the individual game and its rules; the options described here do not establish whether a particular setting changes achievement eligibility. Check the game’s official achievement information or its in-game notice before changing difficulty if this matters to you.
Can I keep the story if I switch to Story or Easy mode?
A mode labelled Story or Easy is a gameplay difficulty choice, not proof that story content changes. Check the game’s mode description for any stated differences before selecting it.

Are horror-game settings the same on PC and console?
Not necessarily: menus and available options can differ by platform and edition. Use the official manual that matches the version you are playing rather than relying on instructions for another platform.
Can brightness settings remove jumpscares?
No. Brightness and related display controls affect visibility; they do not necessarily remove sudden images or sounds. If sound is the main problem, check independent audio sliders. If a particular scene is the concern, look for title-specific content options.
What should I lower first if horror-game audio is too intense?
If available, lower music or ambient audio first when those are the main source of tension. Keep speech and gameplay-critical effects high enough to follow, and use captions or subtitles for spoken information when you listen at a lower volume.
Does a content warning change or skip a disturbing scene?
Not by itself. A warning provides advance notice; whether a game also offers concealment, a phobia mode, or a scene skip depends on that title. Read the option description to confirm its effect.
What if the game has no accessibility option for the trigger that bothers me?
Settings are title-specific, and a game may not offer the control you need. Check the title-screen menu and the official manual for your platform and edition, then use only the closest relevant setting the game actually provides.
The Bottom Line
Match the adjustment to the trigger: use brightness or visibility controls for darkness, separate audio sliders and captions for sound, motion controls for camera discomfort, and Story, Easy, or specific assists for combat pressure. Content warnings and scene controls vary by title, and none of these settings automatically changes every frightening element. Test one option at a time and keep the changes that help without obscuring information you want.
