For a one-off capture that needs no scripted interaction, Chrome’s headless --screenshot option is simpler. None of these approaches requires browser extensions. If the page must stay logged in, a fresh browser will not inherit its session; use an allowed remote-debugging connection to the already-open browser instead.
Choose the capture method for the agent’s situation

These are workflow choices, not a benchmark ranking. Playwright, Puppeteer, and Chrome documentation describe the APIs and command, but do not establish that one method is universally faster or more reliable. Use Playwright for a fresh browser controlled by the agent
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the agent’s environment first. The following JavaScript illustrates the documented API pattern: launch Chromium, open a page, navigate, save a full-page PNG, and close the browser.

For page actions, use Playwright locators and explicit application-specific readiness checks before the screenshot. A screenshot is visual output, not a structured interface for deciding which action to take; use page structure or accessibility information for interaction decisions.
Use Puppeteer as a JavaScript alternative
Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() saves a page image after navigation, and its guide also documents ElementHandle.screenshot() for capturing a particular element. Puppeteer passes --disable-extensions by default, so a normal Puppeteer launch already fits a strict no-extension requirement.

})();networkidle2 is used in Puppeteer’s documented example, but it does not guarantee that every dynamic application has finished rendering. Add a selector wait or another readiness condition that matches the target site when necessary. Some Chrome policies enforce extensions and can make Puppeteer launch fail; for that documented condition, Puppeteer describes enableExtensions: true as a workaround. That exception is not a reason to assume every managed browser requires extensions, and it may not meet a strict policy that forbids them. Check the Puppeteer screenshot guide and Puppeteer configuration documentation for the installed version’s behavior.

Use Chrome headless for a one-off screenshot
When the task is simply to capture a URL without interaction, Chrome’s headless command-line screenshot avoids adding an automation library. The documented example is:
chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot https://www.chromestatus.com/It writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. To specify a viewport, Chrome’s documentation shows the --window-size flag:
chrome --headless --disable-gpu --window-size=1280,1696 --screenshot https://www.chromestatus.com/Replace the example URL with the page to capture. A command-line screenshot is a good fit for a simple request; use Playwright or Puppeteer when the agent needs scripted waits, interactions, element targeting, or more control over the browser lifecycle. Reuse a logged-in browser only through an allowed connection
A browser process launched for the capture starts with its own browser context; it does not automatically acquire the cookies or authenticated session from a separately open browser. If the capture must use that existing session, Playwright documents connecting to a running Chrome or Edge channel when remote debugging is enabled. Whether this is permitted depends on the browser policy and environment, so confirm permission before using it.
Playwright also documents a browser-extension connection that can reuse sessions, cookies, and installed extensions. That is a different mechanism and does not satisfy a strict requirement that extensions be disabled. Consult Playwright’s Chrome extensions documentation and choose the remote-debugging route for a no-extension integration when it is available.

Choose the right image scope
- Viewport: capture the visible browser area when that is the evidence the agent needs.
- Full page: use Playwright’s full-page screenshot option when content below the viewport should be included.
- Element: use Puppeteer’s element screenshot method when only a particular component matters.
Wait for the page you actually need
Navigation completion is not the same as application readiness. A page can continue rendering after navigation, and lazy-loaded content may not appear until it is brought into view. Choose the navigation condition and any selector or application-specific wait for the target page. The cited screenshot guides do not provide a universal wait strategy, and the Puppeteer networkidle2 example should not be treated as proof that all dynamic content is ready.

Control the environment for visual comparisons
Rendered pixels can vary with host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For before-and-after or baseline comparisons, keep the browser and capture environment consistent where possible. Playwright discusses these sources of visual variation in its visual comparisons documentation.
Troubleshoot common capture problems

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot prove that the whole page loaded?
No. It records the rendered page at capture time; it does not by itself prove that all content or lazy-loaded elements appeared.
Can an AI agent use a screenshot to interact with a page?
A screenshot provides visual evidence, not a structured interaction interface. Use browser automation locators or accessibility information for page actions.
