Make a one-minute AI video as an edited sequence, not as one giant generation. A practical workflow is to plan a beginning, middle, and end; divide the minute into short shots; choose text-to-video or image-to-video for each shot; generate at a consistent format; keep a decision log; then assemble, trim, sound-design, and export the finished timeline. Runway’s Gen-4.5 documentation specifies clips of 2–10 seconds, so even a film made entirely with that model needs multiple generations. The method below shows how to plan and document every shot without pretending that undocumented prompts, failed takes, costs, or creative decisions actually happened. Where a real production diary is required, record those facts from the creator’s notes or interview.

How long is one minute of AI video?

It is a chain of short clips whose combined edited duration is 60 seconds. Gen-4.5 currently documents 2–10-second outputs, 720p resolution, 24 or 25 frames per second, and several aspect ratios. At the maximum documented duration, six untrimmed clips could total a minute; at the minimum, 30 would be needed. In practice, plan more source material because you will trim entrances and exits, remove unusable frames, and leave time for transitions, titles, and sound.

Those figures come from Runway’s current help documentation, accessed October 26, 2026, and can change. Check the settings shown in your account before a scheduled production: Runway’s Gen-4.5 guide.

What should you decide before generating any shots?

Write a short creative brief and a shot list before opening the generator. The brief keeps every prompt pointed at the same film rather than producing attractive but incompatible clips.

Define the story spine

  • Premise: one sentence describing who or what changes.
  • Beginning: establish the subject, place, and normal state.
  • Middle: introduce an action, discovery, obstacle, or change.
  • End: show a consequence, reveal, or resolved image.
  • Audience and tone: decide whether the minute should feel documentary, dramatic, comic, instructional, or abstract.

These are editorial planning choices, not requirements imposed by a particular model. They are useful because a 60-second runtime leaves little room for a subplot or an unexplained visual jump.

Choose the delivery format once

Pick the aspect ratio for the destination—landscape, vertical, or square—before generating. Keep it consistent unless a deliberate format change is part of the story. Record the selected frame rate as well; Gen-4.5 lists 24 and 25 fps, and an editor may interpret mixed-rate media differently.

Turn the minute into a shot list

Use a table like this as a planning document. The example is a planning pattern, not a report of a particular film’s actual footage.

Shot Target length Story job Input choice Motion to request Continuity note
1 5–8 seconds Establish place and subject Text or still image Slow reveal or arrival End with a clear pose or direction
2 4–8 seconds Show the first action Image-to-video if appearance must match One physical action Match screen direction from shot 1
3 4–8 seconds Introduce change or problem Text-to-video for a new visual setup Action plus environmental movement Keep lighting and location coherent
4 4–8 seconds Reaction or discovery Last frame of shot 3, if suitable Push-in, pan, or subject reaction Start from the preceding pose
5 6–10 seconds Climax or reveal Image-to-video for composition control Most important movement only Reserve enough frames for the reveal
6 4–8 seconds Resolution and final image Text or image input Settle, exit, or hold Leave clean handles for titles or credits

The durations are planning targets. Generate and trim to the edit rather than assuming every requested second will be usable.

Should you use text-to-video or image-to-video?

Use text-to-video when the prompt must create both the scene and its movement. Use image-to-video when a supplied still should anchor the composition, subject appearance, lighting, or style, while the prompt concentrates on what moves.

Question Text-to-video Image-to-video
What supplies the starting visual? The text prompt describes the scene, subjects, and motion. Your still image supplies the initial composition and look.
What should the prompt emphasize? What appears in frame and how it changes over the short clip. Subject action, environmental motion, camera movement, and timing.
When is it useful? A new location, establishing shot, or concept without a prepared still. Recurring characters, controlled framing, or continuity from an approved image.
Main risk Appearance and layout can drift between generations. A weak or poorly composed source image limits the result.

Runway documents both input modes in its Gen-4.5 documentation. Its prompting guide states: “Image to Video models transform images into videos with a text prompt.” That division of labor matters: do not spend an image-to-video prompt redundantly describing every visual detail already present in the still.

How do you write a prompt for each shot?

Start with one clear action, then add only the details needed to control the result. A short clip cannot show a complicated chain of events clearly, so split a sequence such as “the character runs, falls, stands, and opens a door” into separate shots.

Text-to-video prompts

Describe the subject, setting, visible action, camera behavior, lighting, and the intended temporal progression. For example, specify that a cyclist crosses a rain-soaked bridge while the camera tracks sideways, rather than listing unrelated adjectives. Match the number of requested events to the selected duration.

Image-to-video prompts

Begin with the most important movement. Runway’s guide gives this pattern: “The camera [motion description] as the subject [action]. [Additional descriptions]”. You can request a dolly, pan, tilt, rack focus, wind, water, or a reaction, but you do not need to specify every component in every prompt. Iterate when the first result reveals a problem. Read the complete guidance at Runway’s Image to Video Prompting Guide.

Keep a prompt version history

Save the exact prompt with the shot number, model, duration, aspect ratio, frame rate, input image filename, and generation date. When you change one phrase, create a new version instead of overwriting the old one. A diary can then explain which change addressed a visible issue, rather than claiming that an unrecorded experiment succeeded.

What is the generation-and-review loop?

  1. Set the shot parameters. Confirm duration, aspect ratio, and frame rate in the interface before pressing generate. Gen-4.5 currently lists 2–10 seconds, 720p, and 24 or 25 fps; verify those values in your account because product settings are volatile.
  2. Generate a simple first take. Establish the principal action before adding secondary effects, complex choreography, or elaborate camera moves.
  3. Watch the entire clip. Check the first and last frames, subject identity, anatomy, object continuity, camera path, and whether the action finishes inside the available time.
  4. Classify the problem. Write a concrete note such as “the camera moves correctly but the hand does not reach the handle,” rather than “bad result.”
  5. Change one controlling factor. Simplify the action, alter camera wording, replace the source still, or adjust timing. Multiple simultaneous changes make the reason for improvement impossible to identify.
  6. Keep or reject with a reason. Store the chosen file and retain rejected takes only when they document a meaningful decision or may provide a cutaway.

Runway’s listed cost for Gen-4.5 is 12 credits per second. Treat that as the current documented rate, not a guaranteed total for a film: the final spend depends on the number and length of attempts, your plan, and any other services. Recheck the live documentation before budgeting.

How can you extend a sequence without losing continuity?

When a shot ends in a useful pose, use its last frame as the image input for the next generation. Runway’s continuity guide describes this method: take the completed output’s final frame into a subsequent image-to-video generation, then combine the clips in an editor.

  1. Export or capture the final frame of the approved clip at its native dimensions.
  2. Use that frame as the next shot’s image input.
  3. Prompt only the next movement and camera change; do not ask the model to redesign the established subject.
  4. Place both clips on the timeline and inspect the join frame by frame.
  5. Remove a duplicated shared frame or trim a few frames if the cut appears to pause.

This technique can preserve pose and screen direction, but it does not guarantee identical details. Watch for changes in faces, clothing, hands, props, lighting, and background geometry, and cut away or regenerate when continuity breaks.

Can Adobe Premiere generate media directly in a timeline?

Yes. Adobe’s Generative Media tool lets you select a range in a Premiere timeline, enter a prompt, choose a supported model, and generate video or sound effects as editable media in the sequence. The exact controls and settings can vary with the selected model.

Check current model availability, account access, and supported formats in the Generative Media Tool overview and the Generate video and audio in Premiere guide. This route is convenient when the edit already reveals a missing transition, insert, or sound effect; a separate generator may be preferable when you need a larger batch of exploratory shots.

How do you edit the generated shots into a coherent minute?

Build a rough cut before polishing individual clips. Put the strongest usable take for each story beat on the timeline, then judge rhythm, clarity, and continuity at the sequence level.

Order and pacing

  • Open with the clearest establishing image, unless deliberate mystery is the point.
  • Cut when the viewer has understood an action, not merely when a generated clip ends.
  • Use shorter shots for urgency and longer holds for a reveal or emotional reaction.
  • Trim unusable entrances, exits, and frozen frames; do not preserve a shot simply because it was expensive to generate.

Transitions and titles

Prefer a straight cut when movement, eyeline, and screen direction already connect. Use a dissolve, fade, or title only when it communicates a change in time, place, or chapter. Keep titles inside the safe area of the chosen aspect ratio and leave clean handles in the final shot.

Sound

Plan a sound bed after the rough cut so effects land on the final timing. Record whether music, ambience, dialogue, narration, or generated effects were used, and note their licenses or permissions. If a generated visual cannot communicate an action clearly, a well-timed sound cue may clarify it without another visual generation.

What should a truthful production diary record?

A diary is valuable because it reports decisions and results, not because it lists software names. For every shot, capture the following fields while working:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Diary field What to record Why it matters
Creative purpose Story beat and intended viewer response Shows why the shot exists
Tool and version Generator, editor, model, and date Technical behavior changes over time
Input Prompt text, source image, or previous clip frame Makes the setup reproducible
Settings Duration, aspect ratio, frame rate, resolution, and model options Explains visual and timing constraints
Attempts Number of generations and meaningful prompt revisions Separates documented effort from assumption
Observation Specific artifact, continuity error, or successful motion Connects the change to an outcome
Edit decision Frames trimmed, transition used, and reason for the cut Shows how raw clips became a film
Audio and export Sound choices, codec, dimensions, frame rate, and final file Defines the delivered result

Do not invent a generation count, cost total, discarded take, or quality judgment. The available product documentation establishes capabilities and workflow options, but it does not establish what a particular creator saw or chose. A publishable first-person diary needs the creator’s production notes or a direct account for those details.

What are the most common failure points?

The prompt contains too many events

Split the action into separate shots and give each clip one dominant movement. A short duration cannot reliably stage a multi-step scene.

The subject changes between shots

Start the next generation from an approved final frame, reuse a consistent reference still where appropriate, and keep descriptions of wardrobe, props, and lighting stable. If continuity is still weak, cut on motion or use an insert that does not expose the mismatch.

The camera move overwhelms the subject

Reduce the move to a simple pan, push, tilt, or track. State the subject action first, then the camera behavior, and iterate from the simpler prompt.

The join appears to freeze

Compare the last frame of the first clip with the first frame of the second. Remove the duplicated shared frame, trim the hold, or cut during movement. Runway’s guide specifically advises adjusting timing and removing a shared frame when combining extended clips.

The format is wrong for the destination

Stop and confirm the sequence settings before generating more material. Cropping a landscape shot into a vertical frame can remove the subject or change the intended composition; regenerate or reframe deliberately rather than discovering the mismatch at export.

How should you estimate cost and access?

Use a simple worksheet instead of a guessed total: credits used = seconds generated × listed credits per second × number of attempts. With Gen-4.5’s documented 12 credits per second, a 6-second take would be charged according to that rate at the time of access, but the number of takes and plan rules determine the film’s actual usage. Include any separate editing, audio, storage, or export charges only when the current service terms state them.

Runway’s product page describes extending, upscaling, and exporting, but feature access and plan requirements can change. Confirm them on the live AI Video Generator page before committing to a production schedule.

How do you export the finished one-minute film?

Lock picture first, then confirm that the sequence duration, frame rate, dimensions, audio sample rate, and title-safe placement match the delivery destination. Watch the exported file from beginning to end, because a timeline preview can hide a missing frame, muted track, or final-frame flash. Keep the project file, source stills, prompts, selected generations, and export preset with the delivered movie so the diary can be audited or revised.

Document the final runtime after trimming rather than calling the film “one minute” merely because the plan targeted 60 seconds. If the finished file is shorter or longer, state the measured duration and explain whether the difference came from editorial pacing, titles, or credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I generate the entire minute in one AI-video request?

Not with the documented Gen-4.5 duration range, which tops out at 10 seconds per generated clip. A minute therefore requires multiple outputs or a different service whose current limits you have verified; assemble the pieces in an editor.

Do I need a still image for every shot?

No. Text-to-video can create a scene from a written description, while image-to-video is useful when a supplied still must anchor composition or appearance. Choose per shot rather than forcing one input mode across the film.

When should I upscale an AI-generated clip?

Make the editorial cut at the native generation size first, then test the upscaling option on shots that survive the cut. The available feature, output size, and plan access can change, so confirm the current Runway terms before relying on it.

Can Premiere generate sound as well as picture for this workflow?

Adobe’s Generative Media tool documentation describes generating video or sound effects in a selected timeline range. Check the model-specific controls and account eligibility in the current Premiere help pages before planning a soundtrack around that feature.
