To loop one long lofi video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, choose the local file, and enable Loop in the source properties. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key, test the audio and video, and start the broadcast. The repeat setting belongs to OBS; YouTube receives the resulting live feed.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and have the video file available on the computer that will run OBS. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, TS, FLV, and GIF. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Make sure the YouTube channel is eligible to go live and has live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; check eligibility and restrictions in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Use audio and visuals you have the rights to stream and, if relevant, archive. A lofi label or a “royalty-free” description alone does not establish that you have the necessary rights.
Loop one video with OBS Media Source
- Create or select the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should appear on YouTube Live. In the Sources dock, select the + button and choose Media Source. Name the source if desired, then confirm.
- Select the local video. In the Media Source properties, choose the option to use a local file and browse to the lofi video. Check that the correct file is selected and that it appears in the OBS preview. Resize or position it in the scene if needed.
- Enable the repeat setting. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties, then apply the settings. OBS defines this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting, enabled by default; it controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes visible in the current scene. The setting is not a guarantee of a gapless transition between repetitions.
- Check the audio path. Watch OBS’s audio meters while the video plays. Confirm that the video’s audio is reaching the intended OBS output and is not muted. A moving preview without audio meters, or meters without audio in a test, needs correction before the public broadcast.
- Test the loop. Start playback in OBS and confirm the picture and sound are right. If practical, let the file reach its end during a test to verify that Loop is enabled on the intended source. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before going live.
Use a playlist instead of one file
If you want several files to play in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding one Media Source per file. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when paired with 64-bit OBS. Add the playlist in the source properties and use Loop Playlist, which OBS documents as on by default. For one video, Media Source is the simpler option. The documentation describes repeat behavior, not a tested guarantee of seamless boundaries or resource use. See OBS’s source reference.
| OBS source | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video file | Built into OBS; its Loop setting repeats that file after playback completes. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of media files | Offers Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming on the channel. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose a stream set up for encoder software. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this flow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the stream settings, copy the values YouTube provides. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the server and stream key according to the options shown in your OBS version. The stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel: keep it private and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s live-stream settings help.
- Set output quality for your connection. In OBS output and video settings, choose a resolution and frame rate that fit the source and your available upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder-settings table lists 2–6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; that is YouTube’s guidance for that specific resolution and frame rate, not a universal bitrate for every video or connection. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for other combinations.
- Preview and test before broadcasting publicly. Use the YouTube Live Control Room preview and OBS preview to confirm the intended scene, picture, and audio. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health. Do not assume settings that worked on a short clip will suit a long broadcast if the connection or content changes.
- Start the stream. When the preview and stream health look right, start streaming in OBS. Confirm that the feed reaches the Live Control Room, then start the broadcast there if your chosen YouTube stream settings require it. YouTube’s controls can include auto-start and auto-stop options; check the selected stream’s settings rather than assuming one behavior.
Understand long-stream archives and rights
Archive limits
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The available guidance does not establish reliable archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on a longer live broadcast as your only saved copy. If you need an archive, check YouTube’s current guidance and keep an appropriate local recording. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Music and visual rights
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions make the provider responsible for having the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. Live content must also comply with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Verify that your permissions cover the music and visuals, the live transmission, and any archive you intend to keep; a genre tag or “royalty-free” claim is not proof by itself.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: Open that source’s properties and enable Loop. Confirm you changed the Media Source used in the active scene, not a different or hidden source.
- The wrong picture or no picture appears: Check that the correct local file is selected, the source is visible in the scene, and it is positioned within the canvas. Confirm the file plays as expected before going live.
- The stream has no sound: Check the source’s audio level and mute state, then watch OBS’s audio meters during playback. Test with the same audio arrangement you plan to broadcast.
- The VLC playlist source is missing: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as specified by OBS.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Verify that the selected YouTube stream and OBS use the matching server URL and current stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS with the new one.
- The channel cannot go live yet: Check channel eligibility and restrictions. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Test the connection and representative content, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and select a resolution and bitrate your upload capacity can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its published 2–6 Mbps figure applies specifically to 720p at 30 fps.
- You expect the broadcast to be saved but cannot find an archive: Check whether the stream was under 12 hours. YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish archive behavior for longer sessions.
