To log ESP8266 sensor readings in MySQL, have the device send measurements over Wi-Fi to a PHP endpoint on a web server. PHP validates the incoming values and inserts them into MySQL using a prepared statement. The ESP8266 handles sensors and networking; PHP and MySQL run on a separate server.
How the ESP8266-to-MySQL data flow works
- Read: The ESP8266 gets measurements from connected sensors.
- Send: It transmits the readings over Wi-Fi to a web server.
- Validate: A PHP endpoint checks that the request contains acceptable values and normalizes them as needed.
- Store: PHP inserts the validated measurements into MySQL.
The ESP8266 Arduino Core supports Wi-Fi networking and TCP/UDP communication, bringing support for the ESP8266 chip to the Arduino environment. PHP and MySQL are not hosted on the microcontroller: they run on a separate server. See the ESP8266 Arduino Core repository.
Hardware and server requirements
A tutorial by Yilmaz Yurdakul, published January 5, 2022, uses a NodeMCU ESP8266 breakout board, a DHT11 temperature-and-humidity sensor, and a waterproof DS18B20 temperature probe. Its sketch also reads an analog input. These are example components, not exclusive requirements; wiring and pin choices depend on the specific board and sensor variants. The Arduino Project Hub example describes this data flow and names these parts.
- An ESP8266 development board with Wi-Fi and compatible sensor connections.
- One or more sensors, with their wiring and libraries configured for the board.
- A web server that can run PHP and reach a MySQL database.
- A database and a restricted database account for the logging endpoint.
Choose the request format and secure the connection
The 2022 example sends measurements as GET parameters in an HTTPS URL. For a new logger, HTTPS POST is generally a better fit for structured submissions: it keeps measurement fields out of the URL and provides a straightforward place for a JSON or form-encoded body. Neither method makes input trustworthy; the PHP endpoint must still validate every field.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The example calls setInsecure(), which disables certificate verification, and its commented fingerprint example says the fingerprint is expired. Do not copy that configuration into a deployed device. Configure the ESP8266 to verify the server certificate with an appropriate, maintained trust configuration. The tutorial is a demonstration of the data path, not evidence of a production-ready security setup.
Design the measurement records before writing code
Decide what one database row represents and how the application will interpret it. A practical starting point for multiple measurements is one row per reading, with fields such as:

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Device ID: Identifies which logger sent the reading.
- Measurement timestamp: Store a clearly defined time, preferably normalized to UTC, and document whether it came from the device or server.
- Sensor name or type: Distinguishes readings from different sensors on the same device.
- Value and unit: Keep the numeric value separate from its unit, such as degrees Celsius.
- Quality or status: Define how the system represents a missing, invalid, or failed sensor reading.
This is a design example, not a schema established by the Arduino tutorial. Also define the sampling interval, how offline readings are handled, and how long records are retained. Those decisions affect storage needs and whether gaps in the data are meaningful.
Build the PHP endpoint to validate and insert readings
On receipt, PHP should reject missing or out-of-range values, normalize units and timestamps, and use a database account with only the privileges the endpoint needs. Bind data with a PDO prepared statement rather than concatenating sensor input into SQL. MySQL’s INSERT statement adds the accepted row.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The PHP documentation explains PDO prepared statements, and the MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual documents the INSERT statement. These mechanisms are building blocks; the cited tutorial does not provide a verified general-purpose schema or a production-ready PHP endpoint.
Handle failures instead of silently losing data
A logger needs an explicit plan for unavailable Wi-Fi, an unreachable server, rejected requests, and sensor errors. On the device, check the HTTP response and decide whether to retry or temporarily queue readings. Avoid unlimited retries or an unbounded local queue. On the server, return an appropriate status and avoid treating a request as stored unless the database insert succeeds. If readings may be retried, design for duplicate submissions—for example, by assigning each reading a stable identifier or using a suitable uniqueness constraint.

The Arduino tutorial describes its approach as a simple alternative to services such as Blynk, Cayenne, and ThingSpeak, but it does not establish their current plans or feature sets. The meaningful choice is between operating your own server and using a managed service:

| Consideration | PHP and MySQL you operate | Hosted IoT service |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | You configure the endpoint, database, network access, and device integration. | Often less server administration, depending on the service. |
| Control and data handling | You control the schema and server environment; you also maintain them. | Features, export options, and data handling depend on the provider and current plan. |
| Dashboards and alerts | You build or configure them separately. | Availability and limits depend on the provider and current plan. |
| Ongoing responsibility | You handle security updates, backups, monitoring, and retention. | The provider operates its service, but your device integration and account configuration remain your responsibility. |
Choose a self-hosted stack when you need control over storage and are prepared to maintain the endpoint and database. Compare current service terms directly if ready-made dashboards or managed operations matter more.
