Libby has no subscription charge or late fees for digital loans, but you need a participating library card and the titles you can borrow depend on that library’s collection.
What you need before you start
- A library card for a library that offers Libby. Check with your local library if you need a card; some libraries offer an instant digital-card option in Libby. Card rules vary, and you need the appropriate card for each library you add.
- A supported iOS or Android device, a newer Fire tablet, or a computer with an up-to-date browser. Libby lists iOS 10+ and Android 7.1+ as support baselines, but app and operating-system requirements can change; check the current app-store listing if installation fails.
Libby Help describes the service as free, with no subscription costs, in-app purchases, or late fees. A library card is required. Libraries choose their own digital collections and borrowing policies, so availability, loan periods, limits, and card eligibility vary. Set up Libby and add your library
- Install Libby on a supported iOS or Android device, or a newer Fire tablet. On a Windows or Mac computer or Chromebook, open libbyapp.com in an up-to-date browser.
- Open Libby and search for your library. Select it, then sign in with your library card details.
- If you do not have a card, check whether Libby offers an instant digital-card option for that library. If not, visit the library’s website or contact a branch to learn how to get one.

Find and borrow an audiobook
- Search Libby by title, author, or series, or browse your library’s catalog.
- Open an audiobook’s details. If a copy is available, select Borrow and confirm the loan.
- If no copy is available, select Place Hold to join the wait list. Libby will notify you when the hold is ready; the wait depends on the library’s queue and collection.
Some libraries show Notify Me for a title they do not have. Using it lets the library know you are interested; it does not guarantee the library will add that audiobook. Renewals may be available a few days before the due date, subject to the library’s rules and title availability. Digital loans are automatically returned on their due date. Play the audiobook
- Open Shelf in Libby.
- Select Loans, then open the audiobook.
- Tap Play. Use the player’s playback-speed controls to adjust the narration, or set the sleep timer if you want playback to stop after a chosen interval.

Choose between streaming and offline listening

To change download behavior in the mobile app, open Menu > Downloads and adjust automatic downloads or Wi-Fi-only settings. Libby Help says most audiobooks are larger than 300 MB; that is a service-provided generalization, not a measurement of every title. You can stream audiobook audio from a mobile device to a Google Home or Amazon Echo over Bluetooth. Pair and connect your phone or tablet with the speaker, then start the audiobook in Libby. Playback still starts in Libby: Libby Help says voice commands cannot play its audiobooks. A speaker is optional; you can listen through your device’s own audio. Can I listen to Libby audiobooks on my Google Home or Amazon Echo?
