To limit exposure, reduce what apps collect, opt out of people-search listings, and use deletion rights available where you live. These steps can reduce future collection or remove some broker-held information; they cannot guarantee that data already collected, public records, or information held by government agencies will disappear. In the United States, what law enforcement can obtain depends on the data, its source, the jurisdiction, and the circumstances.
Reduce the data apps collect in the first place
Permission settings can limit an app’s future access to information on your phone. They do not retrieve information the app has already collected or shared. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) explains that both Android and iPhone offer controls over whether, and how precisely, apps can access location data.
- Delete apps you no longer need.
- Review permissions for location, contacts, microphone, photos, and background access. Revoke access an app does not need for the way you use it.
- For location, choose an option such as “while using” or approximate location when it is sufficient. Menu names and available controls vary by device and software version.
- Consider whether an app needs the information at all. A weather app may be usable with a ZIP code you enter yourself; turn-by-turn navigation has a clearer reason to request precise location.
EFF warns that app-collected location can be shared beyond the app, including through commercial channels used by law enforcement. A movement history can expose associations and visits to sensitive places. A setting change helps limit access going forward; it does not make previously collected data vanish. The FTC’s online privacy guide also points consumers to phone, browser, and app privacy settings.
People have changed their app choices over privacy concerns, but an often-quoted figure is historical: a 2013 FTC staff report said 57 percent of app users had either uninstalled an app over concerns about sharing personal information or declined to install one for similar reasons. It is not a current usage rate.

Find and opt out of people-search listings
People-search sites are a type of data broker: they assemble information about people and sell access to reports or listings. The FTC says you can request removal from sites individually at no charge, or pay a service to make requests for you.
- Search your name with common spelling, city, and former-location variations. Note which sites actually host a profile about you.
- Open each site’s own opt-out or privacy-request instructions and follow the stated process. Some sites ask for identifying information to verify that you are the person making the request.
- Keep a record of the sites contacted and the date of each request so you can check whether listings return.
- Search again periodically. The FTC notes that information can reappear as public records change.
An opt-out can restrict a site’s sale of the existing information covered by its process, but it does not erase the underlying public record. Information may also remain in a relative’s or associate’s listing. Removal from one site does not remove information from every broker or elsewhere online.

Free requests or a paid removal service?
Both routes are options described by the FTC. A paid service is a convenience, not a guarantee of complete removal. Coverage, repeat monitoring, fees, and the identifying information a service asks you to provide vary; check those details directly before signing up. No particular breadth of coverage or recurring monitoring is established for paid services as a category.

Use deletion and opt-out rights that apply where you live
Privacy rights depend on state law, the type of information, and whether a company is covered. A data broker’s role and obligations are not necessarily the same as those of an app, a public agency, or another business. The FTC’s 2014 data-broker report is historical: it discussed limited transparency and recommended changes, but it should not be read as a description of current law.

California: submit one request through DROP
California’s Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) lets a consumer submit one verifiable request directing registered data brokers to delete related non-exempt personal information. The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) says the mechanism covers information held by a broker and its service providers or contractors, subject to statutory exceptions. It is not a request to every business, and it does not remove every public record.
As of October 2026, the CPPA says that, beginning August 1, 2026, registered brokers must access DROP at least once every 45 days and process requests on the statutory timetable. The 45-day figure describes how often brokers must access the mechanism, not a promise that every deletion will be completed within 45 days.

What limiting broker data does—and does not—mean for law enforcement
Information you give directly to an agency is different from information held by an app, carrier, broker, or public-record system. EFF documents cases and practices involving law-enforcement acquisition of app location data through commercial channels. Broker opt-outs and app permission changes do not establish a nationwide ban on agencies obtaining data they do not receive from you directly. The legal process and rules vary with the information, source, jurisdiction, and circumstances; there is no single rule here that covers every kind of broker-held data or every request.
California broker reporting includes whether a broker shares data with law enforcement, according to the CPPA. Separately, the FTC describes the federal Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act (PADFAA) as restricting brokers from making defined sensitive data about US individuals available to foreign adversaries. That specific restriction is not a general prohibition on law-enforcement access. In a February 2026 FTC release, Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said, “The FTC is committed to enforcing PADFAA and ensuring companies are complying with its requirements.” That statement concerns enforcement of PADFAA; it is not a guarantee about what data an agency can obtain.
