On Android, set Google Play automatic app updates to Update over Wi-Fi only. On iPhone, turn off App Store cellular access or review its separate download and update controls—but Apple’s settings do not provide the same clearly labeled Wi-Fi-only selector. These controls cover store downloads and updates; extra files a game downloads after installation may need to be managed in the game itself.
Android: make Google Play update games over Wi-Fi only
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then go to Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
- Select Update over Wi-Fi only.
This setting controls routine automatic app updates through Google Play. To check the setting for one game, go to Manage apps & device > Manage, open the game’s details page, tap More, and review Enable auto update. Google’s instructions: Google Play: Update your Android apps.
Some users may see Update with limited amount of mobile data. Google says this option tries Wi-Fi first and allocates a data budget; it is not a guarantee that updates will use Wi-Fi only. Google also notes that critical security-vulnerability updates may happen regardless of app or device update settings: Google Play’s update guidance.
Initial game downloads on Android
Installing a game is different from automatically updating it. If you want to restrict an initial download, check the Play Store’s App download preference if that option is available on your device. Its location and availability can vary, so do not assume the automatic-update setting also controls every new installation.

iPhone: restrict App Store use of cellular data
- Open Settings > Apps > App Store.
- Review Cellular Data, App Downloads, App Updates, and, if relevant, In-App Content.
- To prevent App Store activity from using cellular data broadly, turn off Cellular Data. You can also review the individual automatic-download controls.
Apple lists these controls, but its guide does not describe each individual toggle as a Wi-Fi-only selector. Menu labels or placement can differ across iOS releases; if the path does not match your iPhone, search Settings for “App Store.” See Apple’s iPhone guide to App Store settings.
Check Wi-Fi fallback if cellular use must be avoided
Even when connected to Wi-Fi, iPhone can use cellular data if Wi-Fi is slow or unusable through Connectivity Assist. Apple says it can be disabled in Settings > Wi-Fi, including for a particular network. Check this setting if you need to avoid cellular fallback; turning it off may affect connectivity when Wi-Fi is poor. See Apple’s Connectivity Assist guidance.

What these settings do—and do not—cover
- Store updates: Google Play’s Wi-Fi-only choice applies to routine automatic app updates. iPhone’s App Store controls govern cellular access and categories of downloads or updates, but do not present the same explicit Wi-Fi-only choice in Apple’s cited guide.
- New installations: A setting for automatic updates does not necessarily control a game you choose to install. Check the store’s download controls separately.
- Extra game files: Games can download maps, textures, voice packs, or other assets after installation. Store settings do not establish a universal rule for those in-game downloads. Look in the game’s own settings for options such as downloading over Wi-Fi only or pausing additional content downloads.
- Operating-system updates: iOS and Android system updates have separate controls; App Store or Play Store settings do not govern them.
- Restrictions and exceptions: An Android device managed by an organization may have administrator policies that override user preferences. Managed Google Play’s default update constraints and exceptions can differ from ordinary personal-device behavior; see Managed Google Play’s app auto-update documentation. Apple Screen Time can restrict installing or deleting apps and apply age ratings, but it is an access restriction, not a Wi-Fi-only data control: Apple’s Screen Time guidance.
