Use both device-level permissions and AI-account controls to reduce what an AI feature can access and retain. On an iPhone, turn off Apple Intelligence globally or restrict Writing Tools, Image Creation, and Intelligence Extensions in Screen Time, then review each AI app under Privacy & Security. On Android, Gemini runs through the Google app, so deny unnecessary Google app permissions such as microphone, camera, contacts, and location. Finally, review Gemini Apps Activity, auto-delete, Connected Apps, and separate Google history settings. These controls reduce access and retention, but they are not one universal privacy switch: menus vary by device, operating-system release, language, region, and supported hardware.
What should I change first to limit AI access to my data?
Start with the permissions an AI app does not need for its normal job, then disable AI features you do not use and reduce account-level activity retention. This order blocks live access to sensitive data before you review older activity.
- On iPhone: check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri, and Settings > Privacy & Security.
- On Android: check the Google app’s permissions through App info > Permissions, then open Gemini Apps settings for activity, auto-delete, improvement controls, and Connected Apps.
- For Google accounts on either platform: review Gemini Apps Activity separately from Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and Timeline.
Keep a permission only when a capability genuinely needs it. An AI assistant may receive anything you deliberately submit, including prompts, files, videos, screens, photos, imported chats, and browser-page content, so sharing less content is as important as changing settings.

How do I turn off Apple Intelligence on an iPhone?
Use the global Apple Intelligence switch when you want the current Apple Intelligence feature set unavailable on the device. This is separate from permissions granted to individual apps.

Turning off this switch removes access to the current Apple Intelligence feature set on supported devices. If the menu is missing, the iPhone model, iOS release, language, or region may not support Apple Intelligence; Apple says availability is not universal.
How can I block specific Apple Intelligence features?
Screen Time provides narrower controls when you want to keep some system features but prevent particular AI functions or extensions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap Intelligence & Siri.
- Set any of these to Don’t Allow: Writing Tools, Image Creation, and Intelligence Extensions.
Intelligence Extensions includes connections to third-party providers such as ChatGPT. Use this route when the concern is a particular capability or extension rather than the entire Apple Intelligence feature set.
How do I stop iPhone AI apps from accessing photos, contacts, or the microphone?
Manage access per app in Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple prompts for permission the first time an installed app tries to access information such as your location or photos, and you can later change that decision.
Review the sensitive categories
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open Photos, Contacts, Calendars, Location Services, Camera, and Microphone one at a time.
- Select the AI app and turn off access it does not need. Repeat for every AI app, not just Apple’s system features.
For example, a text-generation app may not need contacts, calendars, camera, or continuous location access. Revoke those categories while leaving only a permission required for a task you actually perform.

Review tracking and create an activity record
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable tracking requests you do not want to approve.
- Turn on App Privacy Report in Settings > Privacy & Security to inspect permission use and network activity by installed apps.
App Privacy Report is a monitoring tool, not a replacement for revoking permissions. Use what it shows to decide which app categories need another review.
How do I limit Gemini’s access on Android?
Gemini on Android is hosted by the Google app, so change the Google app’s device permissions rather than looking only for a separate Gemini entry.

- Touch and hold the Google app icon.
- Tap App info.
- Tap Permissions.
- Open each permission and select Don’t allow when Gemini does not need it.
Pay particular attention to Microphone, Camera, Contacts, and Location. Removing a permission can disable the related capability, so restore it only when you need that function and then review it again afterward.
If your Android labels differ
Android menus vary by manufacturer and Android version. Search Settings for Gemini, Google, Privacy, or Permissions; the relevant screen is the Google app’s permission list. A work profile or administrator policy can also change which options are visible, so follow the device’s displayed labels rather than assuming every phone has identical menus.
How do I stop Gemini from retaining or using my activity?
Device permissions control what Gemini can reach on the phone; Gemini Apps settings control activity associated with your account. Review both layers.

Review and delete Gemini Apps Activity
- Open Gemini Apps settings on the device or in the Gemini account interface.
- Review the listed Gemini Apps Activity.
- Delete activity you no longer want retained.
- Change the auto-delete period to a shorter option if you do not need a longer history.
Control model-improvement use
In the same settings, review whether activity may be used to improve Google AI and turn that control off if you do not want to contribute activity for that purpose. This setting addresses use of Gemini activity; it does not revoke microphone, camera, contacts, location, or other device permissions.

Remove unnecessary Connected Apps
Open Connected Apps in Gemini settings and remove services Gemini does not need. A connected service can expand the information available to an assistant, so keep only integrations required for a specific workflow.
Share the minimum content in each prompt
Google says Gemini may receive prompts, files, videos, screens, photos, imported chats, and browser-page content that a user shares. Avoid pasting complete conversations, uploading an entire photo library, or sending a full document when a short excerpt answers the task. Permission controls cannot undo information you intentionally submit.
Does turning off Gemini Apps Activity stop Google from saving all my data?
No. Gemini Apps Activity is not a universal Google privacy switch. Google states that Search Services History, Web & App Activity, or Timeline may continue saving information when those services are used.
- Open your Google Account privacy controls.
- Review Search Services History, if shown for your account.
- Review Web & App Activity and its retention or deletion settings.
- Review Timeline separately if location history is relevant to your use.
Deleting Gemini activity therefore does not automatically delete a search, browsing record, or Timeline entry created through another Google service. Treat each history as a separate control surface.

How can I verify that the restrictions worked?
Check the setting, then test the capability that would have required access. Verification catches cases where you changed an account option but left a device permission enabled, or where a manufacturer moved a menu.
- iPhone feature test: confirm Apple Intelligence is off, or confirm the selected Screen Time items show Don’t Allow.
- iPhone permission test: revisit each Privacy & Security category and verify the AI app is absent from, or denied in, the category you changed. Use App Privacy Report to inspect subsequent activity.
- Android permission test: return to the Google app’s Permissions page and confirm microphone, camera, contacts, and location show Don’t allow where intended.
- Gemini account test: confirm the selected auto-delete period, inspect Connected Apps, and check the activity-improvement choice.
- Google account test: inspect Web & App Activity and Timeline independently; do not assume their status follows Gemini Apps Activity.
What can go wrong when limiting AI permissions?
A feature stops working
Denying camera, microphone, contacts, location, or another permission can remove the related capability. Decide whether that function is worth the data access; if it is, grant the permission only when needed and return to the permission screen after the task.
The setting is missing
On iPhone, Apple Intelligence controls depend on supported hardware, a current enough iOS release, language, and region. On Android, manufacturer software and Android version change menu names and placement. Search Settings for the feature name or open the app’s App info screen instead of relying on an online path from another phone.
Old activity remains visible
Gemini Apps Activity must be reviewed and deleted separately from other Google histories. A remaining record in Search Services History, Web & App Activity, or Timeline does not necessarily mean Gemini deletion failed; it may belong to that other service.

An extension still appears available
On iPhone, check both the global Apple Intelligence switch and Screen Time’s Intelligence Extensions control. On Android, remove unneeded Gemini Connected Apps and separately check the Google app permissions.
Privacy checklist for AI features
- Disable Apple Intelligence globally if you do not want its current feature set on an eligible iPhone.
- Use Screen Time to disallow Writing Tools, Image Creation, or Intelligence Extensions individually.
- Audit every AI app under iPhone Privacy & Security, especially Photos, Contacts, Calendars, Location Services, Camera, and Microphone.
- Review Tracking and enable App Privacy Report on iPhone.
- On Android, open the Google app’s App info and deny unneeded permissions.
- Delete unnecessary Gemini Apps Activity and choose a shorter auto-delete period.
- Turn off Gemini activity use for Google AI improvement if you do not want that use.
- Remove Gemini Connected Apps that are not essential.
- Share only the smallest prompt, file, image, video, screen, or browser excerpt needed.

Why can’t I find Apple Intelligence settings on my iPhone?
Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone model, iOS release, language, or region. Update iOS where appropriate and search Settings for “Apple Intelligence”; if the option still does not appear, the device or locale may not support it.
Will denying the Google app’s microphone permission delete Gemini conversations?
No. The Android permission controls whether the Google app can use the microphone on the device. Review and delete saved Gemini conversations separately through Gemini Apps Activity.
Can I block only third-party AI extensions on an iPhone?
Yes. In Screen Time, open Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri and set Intelligence Extensions to Don’t Allow. This is a narrower choice than switching off Apple Intelligence entirely.
Why do Android privacy instructions look different on another phone?
