Start with the strongest window in the room: turn your subject toward it and place a white reflector on the shadow side if the face needs gentle fill. If daylight is too weak or unreliable, try one flash bounced from a pale wall or ceiling. Add a softbox or umbrella only when you have safe room for the light stand and modifier.
How do I assess a small room before setting up?
Before moving equipment, note where the strongest window or existing light falls, the color of nearby walls and ceiling, and what will appear behind the subject. Check whether there is a safe place for a reflector, light stand, and photographer without blocking a walkway or putting equipment where it can be knocked over.
Colored walls can tint reflected light, while a low or distant ceiling may make flash bounce less useful. Mixed daylight and artificial light can also create different color casts across the scene; white balance may not fully remove them. Make a test frame and judge the face and background together.
Where should I place the subject?
Begin with the subject turned toward the window or intended key light. If the room allows it, move the subject away from the background so the portrait has more depth and you can better control how much light reaches the backdrop. In a tight room, even a modest change in the subject’s angle or distance can alter the light on the face and background.

Can I make soft portrait light with a window and reflector?
Yes. When the window provides enough light, use it as the key and put a white reflector opposite it to lift the shadow side. Move the reflector closer to increase its contribution or farther away for subtler fill. This approach needs little equipment and avoids setting up flash; the reflector redirects existing light but cannot replace daylight that is not there. Nikon describes indoor portraits using window light and a reflector in its guide to controlling light spill.
A light looks softer when it is larger relative to the subject or its output is diffused. That is why a nearby window can produce pleasing portrait light, and why softboxes and umbrellas can soften an artificial source when the room can accommodate them. When should I use flash, and where should I point it?
If window light is inadequate or inconsistent, try one flash before adding more lights. A camera-mounted speedlight bounced from a suitable pale ceiling or wall redirects the light and makes the reflecting surface act as a larger apparent source. The result depends on the surface’s color, position, and distance: a colored surface may tint the light, and a distant or poorly placed one may return too little light. Take a test frame and redirect the flash if the result is weak or uneven.
Direct on-camera flash can create glare or flatten facial modeling. Bouncing or diffusing it changes the character of the light, but does not guarantee a particular look. Which lighting approach fits the space?

When does a softbox or umbrella make sense?
Use a compact softbox or umbrella when you need an artificial source that is more diffuse or its direction needs to be shaped, and there is enough clearance to place it safely. A larger modifier can make the light source appear larger relative to the subject, but it also occupies more room and can spread light onto nearby walls or the background. In a cramped space, repositioning the subject or using a more contained modifier may work better than trying to fit a large setup. How do I control spill and refine the portrait?
Watch the background and nearby walls as well as the subject’s face. If flash reaches areas you do not want lit, try changing its angle or position, reducing its output, or using a more contained modifier. Make small adjustments, then check how the face and background look together.
Once the light is in a workable position, adjust exposure and the subject’s expression. There is no single camera setting that fits every window, room, surface, and flash arrangement; evaluate the frame after each change rather than relying on a one-setting recipe.
