Software can act on-chain without receiving your wallet’s root private key, but only when a smart account or authorization module enforces a narrowly defined delegation. A separate session key can be limited to particular contracts, methods, tokens, amounts, and time windows; the primary key remains undisclosed and can approve or revoke the arrangement. This is different from custody. Custody depends on who can technically cause an asset transfer, not on whether a product calls itself “self-custody.”
ERC-4337 supplies the account-abstraction framework for this design, while each smart-account implementation decides how signatures, limits, expiry, revocation, upgrades, and recovery actually work. The result can reduce routine exposure of a root key, but an overpowered session key, malicious module, upgrade administrator, or provider override can recreate custody-like risk.
What do a crypto wallet and a smart account actually control?
Crypto assets remain recorded on a blockchain. A wallet does not contain coins in a local file; it stores or accesses the asymmetric private keys and addresses used to authorize state changes. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Bulletin describes self-custody as a situation in which the user alone controls those keys, while third-party custody means a provider controls access.
NIST defines a wallet as software used to store and manage asymmetric keys and addresses for transactions. The implementation can be software or hardware. A conventional externally owned account (EOA) normally has one signing key: whoever can produce a valid signature can initiate any transaction the account can afford and the network accepts.

A smart account replaces that single, fixed authorization rule with contract code. The account can require several signatures, support recovery, batch calls, sponsor fees, or accept a delegated key that is valid only for a defined purpose. The root key still matters, but it no longer has to sign every routine action directly.
How does ERC-4337 let software act without seeing the root key?
ERC-4337 moves authorization and execution logic into a smart-account implementation coordinated by an EntryPoint contract. A client creates a UserOperation containing call data and a signature. The account’s validation function decides whether that operation satisfies its rules; the EntryPoint verifies and executes accepted operations. Bundlers collect UserOperations and submit them, while an optional paymaster can sponsor gas.
- Software requests an action. For example, an automation service asks to call a particular application contract.
- A delegated credential signs. The service uses a session key or other delegated signer, not the root private key.
- The account validates the scope. Account code or an installed authorization module checks the signer, target, function, token, amount, nonce, and validity period.
- The EntryPoint coordinates execution. If validation succeeds, the requested call runs through the smart account. If it fails, the operation is rejected before execution.
- A bundler submits the operation. The bundler does not need the root key; it transports UserOperations and may include many users’ operations in one transaction.
ERC-4337 supports custom signature schemes, multisignature policies, recovery logic, batched calls, and sponsored fees. It does not, by itself, define one universal session-key format or one mandatory permission language. The wallet, plugin, or authorization module must implement and enforce those details.
What is a session key, and what limits can it have?
A session key is a secondary key delegated for a restricted period or task. A static design grants an ongoing permission until someone revokes it. A dynamic design places constraints in a signed session token or authorization record, such as a validUntil deadline and an allowed target contract. The account checks those constraints whenever the delegated key submits an operation.
| Permission dimension | Example restriction | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Signer | Only one generated session public key | Limits which credential can invoke the delegated rule. |
| Target | One approved contract address | Prevents the key from calling unrelated protocols. |
| Function | Only a named method, such as a claim or trade function | Blocks administrative or asset-sweeping methods on the same contract. |
| Asset | One token contract or token ID range | Separates permissions for different assets. |
| Amount | A per-operation or cumulative spending cap | Bounds the loss if the delegated key or application is compromised. |
| Time | Start and expiry timestamps | Turns a temporary automation task off automatically. |
| Nonce and frequency | One-use nonce or a maximum number of calls | Reduces replay and runaway-loop risk. |
| Gas and fee policy | A maximum gas price or sponsored-call rule | Stops an automation process from consuming an unlimited fee budget. |
These controls are only meaningful if the account validates them against the exact call data. A text label in a dashboard is not a security boundary. Read the module’s code or a trustworthy audit, and confirm that a limit covers batched calls, token approvals, delegate calls, and indirect transfers rather than only the obvious transaction type.
How do I delegate a limited action safely?
The exact buttons differ by wallet, but a sound setup follows the same sequence. Treat the delegation as a security policy that must be independently verified before the software receives the credential.

- Choose a smart account with explicit delegation support. Confirm which account implementation, EntryPoint version, and authorization module are being used. The base ERC-4337 specification does not guarantee session-key support.
- Record the root-key recovery path first. Test that the owner key, multisignature quorum, or recovery method can remove the delegated signer and replace a compromised module. Do not begin with an irreversible deployment or an untested guardian process.
- Generate the session key in the least exposed environment available. The automation process should receive only the delegated private key. Keep the root key on a hardware device or offline signer when practical.
- Define the narrowest target. Enter the exact contract address and chain identifier. Avoid wildcard targets unless the use case genuinely requires them.
- Restrict methods and parameters. Permit only the function selectors and argument ranges the task needs. For token transfers, constrain token address, recipient pattern, token IDs, and quantity.
- Set a short validity period. Use a concrete expiration for a job or campaign. A key that is valid indefinitely should be treated as a standing operational signer, not a temporary session.
- Set value and gas ceilings. Apply both per-call and aggregate limits where the implementation supports them. Check whether native currency sent with a call is covered separately from ERC-20 or NFT amounts.
- Review the encoded authorization. Compare the displayed policy with the data that will be signed. A human-readable preview should identify chain, target, method, token, amount, expiry, and revocation authority.
- Run a harmless test. Use a testnet or a minimal-value transaction and inspect the resulting UserOperation and on-chain event logs. Verify that an out-of-scope call is rejected.
- Install monitoring and a kill switch. Alert on new signers, module upgrades, limit changes, failed validations, and unusual call frequency. Know the exact transaction or UI path that revokes the session key.
- Revoke and destroy when finished. Remove the signer, invalidate its nonce or session token, and delete the automation secret from the service that used it. Expiry alone may not invalidate already-approved allowances in every design.
When does a delegated system become custody?
The decisive question is technical control: who can bring about the transfer of the benefit of the cryptoasset? UK Financial Conduct Authority guidance says a firm is safeguarding cryptoassets when it has that ability “through any means,” including holding private keys or arranging for others to hold key shards. The guidance also notes that merely being able to prevent a transfer is not necessarily sufficient by itself.

A hosted interface that only prepares unsigned data, while the user’s independent signer approves every transfer, does not automatically establish custody. Conversely, a product marketed as self-custody may create custody-like exposure if its operator can replace validation code, override a permission module, recover keys unilaterally, or submit a transaction that moves assets without the user’s independent authorization.
| Control arrangement | Likely security character | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| User alone holds the root key; software receives no signing capability | Self-custody with a transaction-preparation interface | Can the provider ever obtain the key, sign, or change the destination? |
| Smart account accepts a bounded session key; user controls revocation and upgrades | Delegated self-custody, subject to implementation risk | Are target, method, amount, expiry, and upgrade rights enforced on-chain? |
| Provider controls a signing key, key shard quorum, or recovery path that can transfer assets | Custody or custody-like control | Can the provider move assets without a fresh, independent user authorization? |
| Provider can pause transfers but cannot initiate them | Control is limited; prevention alone may not equal custody | Who can ultimately authorize a transfer, and can the pause be bypassed or abused? |
| Upgradeable account with an undisclosed administrator | Elevated counterparty and custody-like risk | Who can install new validation logic, and is there a timelock or user veto? |
Legal treatment depends on jurisdiction, service design, and the assets involved. The FCA statement is a control test, not a blanket classification for every smart-account product. Document the actual authority paths rather than relying on the words “non-custodial” or “self-custody.”
What are the main security risks of scoped permissions?
Delegation reduces root-key exposure but introduces a policy and code boundary. The following failures are implementation-specific because ERC-4337 leaves signature and permission logic to each account and module.
- Overbroad scope: A wildcard contract, unrestricted approval, or missing parameter check can let a session key drain more than intended.
- Indirect execution: A permitted method may call another contract, use a delegate call, or transfer a different asset than the interface suggests. Validation must account for the complete call path.
- Replay: A session token without chain binding, nonce handling, or expiry can be reused on another chain or after its intended task ends.
- Weak revocation: Revoking a dashboard record is ineffective if the on-chain module still accepts the key or if existing token allowances remain active.
- Malicious upgrades: An administrator who can replace account or authorization code may expand permissions after the user signs the original policy.
- Phishing: A fake prompt can persuade a user to authorize a broad target, long expiry, or unrestricted token approval.
- Automation compromise: Malware, a leaked environment variable, or a breached server can use the delegated key until its limits or revocation stop it.
- Denial of service: A provider or bundler can refuse to relay operations, leaving assets safe but automation unavailable. Availability and custody are separate properties.
Mitigate these risks with short expiries, per-task keys, minimal targets, aggregate caps, independent simulation, immutable or timelocked modules, on-chain event monitoring, and a tested emergency owner path. Never assume a third-party audit covers the exact deployed bytecode, configuration, or upgrade administrator.

How can I audit a smart account before trusting it?
Use a written checklist and verify the deployed address, not just a marketing page. The following questions expose most material differences between implementations.
- Permission scope: Does validation inspect target contracts, function selectors, token addresses, recipients, amounts, and batched operations?
- Duration: Are start and end times checked on-chain, and is the chain ID included in the signed data?
- Revocation: Can the owner immediately remove one signer without disabling unrelated users? What happens to pending UserOperations?
- Recovery: Can the owner replace a lost session key and recover the account without a provider’s discretionary approval?
- Upgrade authority: Who can change account code, plugins, EntryPoint configuration, or validation rules? Is there a timelock, multisignature, or immutable deployment?
- Transfer capability: Can any provider, guardian, relayer, or key-shard quorum initiate a transfer without the user’s independent authorization?
- Simulation: Can you simulate the exact UserOperation and inspect state changes before signing? Does the simulator model reentrancy and batched calls?
- Auditability: Are source code, deployed addresses, version history, and security disclosures public and matched to the chain you use?
- Interoperability: Can another wallet or recovery tool recognize the account and revoke permissions, or are you locked into one interface?
If any answer is “unknown,” treat the permission as higher risk and reduce the value, duration, and asset exposure accordingly. A small test transaction cannot prove that an upgrade path or emergency procedure is safe.
What does a complete UserOperation flow look like?
Understanding the data path helps developers separate signing, validation, relaying, and execution responsibilities.
- The application constructs call data for the smart account, including the destination and method arguments.
- The account client adds nonce, gas fields, paymaster data if applicable, and the session-policy identifier.
- The delegated signer signs the UserOperation or the policy-specific digest. The root key is not exported to the application.
- A bundler performs simulation and places the operation in a bundle if validation succeeds under its admission rules.
- The EntryPoint invokes the account’s validation function. The account checks signature and every configured constraint.
- After successful validation, the EntryPoint executes the call and settles gas, possibly with a paymaster sponsoring the transaction.
- Logs and account state record execution, nonce changes, and any policy or signer updates. Monitoring software should consume those records rather than trusting a front-end status message.
The bundler is a transport and execution service, not automatically a custodian. Its custody implications depend on whether it can obtain an effective signing credential or otherwise cause a transfer through the account’s control paths.
How do hardware wallets fit with software permissions?
Hardware wallets are relevant because they can isolate the root private key while a software session key handles routine, bounded actions. A 5 May 2025 submission to the SEC Crypto Task Force describes self-custody wallets as software or hardware tools that let individuals directly control private keys and gives Ledger and Trezor as hardware examples; MetaMask, Phantom, and Keplr are given as software examples.

A practical arrangement is to keep owner approval, module installation, upgrades, and emergency recovery on the hardware device, while issuing a short-lived session key to an automation process. This does not make the automation risk-free: the smart-account code must still enforce scope, and the owner must be able to revoke the session key without relying on the same compromised computer.
Check compatibility before deployment. Some hardware devices can sign ordinary EOA transactions but do not display or understand every smart-account policy. If the device shows only an opaque hash, use an independently verified policy renderer and keep the value and expiry limits conservative.

The ERC-4337 EntryPoint was deployed on Ethereum mainnet on 1 March 2023. Ethereum.org’s account-abstraction roadmap page reports more than 26 million smart wallets and 170 million UserOperations; those are page-dated adoption figures that can change and should not be treated as a permanent network total.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adoption numbers do not establish that every wallet supports safe delegation. Smart accounts can use different modules, EntryPoint versions, bundlers, paymasters, and recovery models. Interoperability remains an evaluation axis: a permission created by one wallet may not be visible to another, and a recovery tool may not understand a custom validation plugin.
What should I do if a session key is lost or compromised?
Act from the root owner or recovery quorum, not from the affected automation service. First stop the service, then revoke the signer or invalidate its session nonce on-chain. Review token approvals and permissions that the delegated key could have created, and revoke those separately if the account model does not automatically clear them.

Next, inspect account and module upgrade events for unauthorized changes. If the account has an emergency freeze, use it only after confirming whether freezing also blocks the recovery transaction. For assets at material risk, transfer them to a clean account through the independently controlled recovery path, then rebuild a narrower policy and rotate every related secret.
Is scoped delegation safer than giving software the root key?
Usually, yes: a correctly implemented session policy limits what compromised software can do and keeps the root private key undisclosed. It is not automatically safer than manual signing, because the policy module, upgrade authority, revocation process, and user interface become new attack surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a session key move funds after it expires?
It should be rejected once the account checks the expiry on-chain, but expiry does not necessarily cancel token approvals, queued operations, or permissions created by an earlier call. Verify how the specific module handles pending operations and previously granted allowances.
Do I need to run my own bundler for delegated transactions?
No. A compatible bundler can relay UserOperations, and a paymaster may sponsor gas. Using a third-party relayer affects availability and privacy, so retain a fallback relayer or direct submission path for emergency revocation.
Can the same delegated key work on multiple chains?
Only if the policy explicitly permits it, and that increases replay and blast-radius risk. Prefer chain-bound signatures and separate session keys per network unless the implementation provides strong domain separation and independent limits.
