Keep test mocks synchronized by treating them as executable contracts, not hand-written sample data. Put every vendor call behind a small API-client module, run that real client against a contract mock, publish the resulting versioned interactions, and have the provider verify them against an implementation or controlled compatibility environment. A broker or reviewable artifact store then tells you which consumer versions are compatible before either side ships.

This approach catches breaking changes while they are still test failures: a renamed request field, changed status code, missing response property, altered enum, or incompatible URL format is identified before production traffic reaches it. Use consumer-driven contracts for the behavior your application actually relies on, and add OpenAPI or AsyncAPI checks when you also need coverage of the provider’s wider, documented interface.

What does it mean to keep a mock in sync with a third-party API?

A mock is in sync when it reproduces the provider behavior that the production client depends on and that behavior is continuously checked against the provider’s implementation or contract. The reliable unit of synchronization is an executable interaction: method, path, query, headers, request body, response status, and the response fields your client reads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hand-maintained fixtures drift because they are detached from both sides of the integration. A vendor can rename a field, tighten validation, remove an enum value, change pagination, or return a different status while your local mock continues to make every test pass. Contract testing turns the mock into an output of a test and makes the provider prove that output still works.

The Pact Foundation describes contract testing as “a technique for testing an integration point by checking each application in isolation.” That isolation is especially useful for third-party services: your consumer tests do not require the vendor to be available, while provider verification can run in a controlled environment rather than during every local build.

How should I structure the code before writing a contract?

Start with a narrow API-client module and make the contract test exercise that production code. Do not place generic HTTP calls directly in the test; a generic call may pass while the real client serializes a query parameter, header, or request field incorrectly.

Create one boundary for each provider

  • Keep authentication, base URL handling, serialization, retries, pagination, and response mapping inside the client module.
  • Expose methods that represent application needs, such as getCustomer, createInvoice, or listEvents, rather than exposing a general-purpose HTTP wrapper to the rest of the application.
  • Inject the endpoint and credentials so the same client can target a contract mock in consumer tests and a compatibility deployment during provider verification.
  • Translate provider-specific errors into stable application errors only after the contract test has asserted the provider status and body shape that trigger the translation.

Choose interactions from real client behavior

Trace the client methods used by production code and list the distinct provider responses that cause different application behavior. A single “happy path” interaction is rarely enough. Include success, validation failure, authorization failure, not-found, and pagination branches whenever the client handles them differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a write operation, assert a response that demonstrates the provider accepted the intended field names. An isolated 200 response can conceal a silently ignored payload field if the mock never checks what was sent.

How do consumer tests generate a trustworthy contract?

Use Pact or an equivalent contract framework to run the real client against a mock provider. The test defines only the behavior the consumer requires; the framework records the executed interaction as a JSON contract that can be versioned and verified later.

  1. Define the consumer scenario. Name the consumer, provider, and business case. Set the request method, path, query parameters, required headers, and body fields the client must send.
  2. Configure the mock provider. Tell the mock which response status, headers, and body shape to return for that request. Use matchers for values that legitimately vary.
  3. Run the production client. Point the client at the mock endpoint and execute the application code path. This proves that serialization, authentication headers, URL construction, and response parsing work together.
  4. Assert consumer-visible outcomes. Check the fields and status decisions the application actually uses, including error handling and pagination behavior.
  5. Write the contract artifact. Pact records the interaction in JSON after the test executes. Treat that file as a build artifact, not as a fixture to edit by hand.
  6. Publish an immutable version. Store the contract with the consumer version, commit, branch, consumer name, and provider name so a later verification result can be traced to the exact code that produced it.

Pact’s documented sequence is consumer test, generated JSON contract, publication, provider retrieval, and provider replay. The contract therefore reflects executed examples rather than every state the provider might theoretically support.

Which fields and matchers should a contract assert?

Assert exact values only where the consumer depends on the exact value. Match types, patterns, or provider state for values that vary legitimately. This keeps a contract strict about compatibility without making it fragile.

Use exact matching for decisions

  • HTTP status codes that select a success or error branch.
  • Required enum values, such as a state that changes business logic.
  • Fixed request paths, query keys, and header names.
  • URL formats when the client follows or stores a returned URL.
  • Field names and values that the client sends and the provider must honor.

Use flexible matching for generated data

  • Identifiers generated by the provider.
  • Timestamps and other clock-dependent values.
  • Quantities whose type or range matters more than one sample number.
  • Provider-state-dependent values that are different in each verification run.

Do not paste the provider’s entire sample payload into every mock. Extra fields increase coupling without protecting the consumer. A response containing only the fields the client reads is usually safer; adding a field to the provider should not break a consumer that never uses it.

For collections, include the minimum shape needed to exercise empty, single-page, and multi-page behavior if those cases lead to different client actions. The contract should describe the interaction that matters, not become a copy of the provider’s documentation.

How does provider verification detect a breaking change?

Provider verification replays each published consumer interaction against a real provider implementation or a controlled compatibility deployment. The provider must return a response that satisfies the consumer’s request and matching rules; any mismatch identifies the interaction, request, response difference, and contract version that failed.

  1. Retrieve the candidate contracts. The provider verification job obtains contracts for the consumer versions relevant to the build, normally from a broker or reviewable artifact store.
  2. Prepare deterministic provider state. Create the records, permissions, feature flags, and other preconditions required by each interaction. Keep these states reviewable and repeatable.
  3. Stub downstream dependencies. If the provider calls a database, payment service, queue, or another vendor, replace those dependencies with deterministic test doubles so a contract result reflects the provider API rather than an unrelated outage.
  4. Replay every interaction. Send the recorded method, path, headers, and body to the provider environment and compare the response with the contract matchers.
  5. Publish verification results. Associate success or failure with the provider version, commit, branch, and contract version.
  6. Apply the release gate. Block a release when a required interaction is incompatible, while retaining the exact mismatch and provider state as CI artifacts for diagnosis.

GitLab’s description of the model is symmetrical: consumer specifications define expected mocked responses, and provider specifications replay those requests against the actual service. Divergence becomes a conversation before a breaking change ships.

GOV.UK documents the same pattern with JSON pact files published to a broker and provider verification run against a test environment. It also documents branch-specific and local pact-file verification, which are useful when a change has not yet reached a shared branch.

What does a contract broker add?

A broker provides a shared compatibility record. Consumers publish immutable contracts; providers publish verification results; teams can then ask whether a particular consumer version is compatible with a particular provider version without deploying both applications together.

Information to publish with each contract

  • Consumer and provider names.
  • Immutable consumer version, commit identifier, and branch.
  • The contract file generated by the test run.
  • Publication time and the CI job that produced it.

Information to retain for each verification

  • Provider version, commit, branch, and environment.
  • Consumer contract version being verified.
  • Pass or fail status for each interaction.
  • The request, response mismatch, and provider state for failures.

A self-managed artifact store can hold the files and results, while a hosted broker can add features such as access control, user management, SSO, secrets, and a richer compatibility view. The important property is not the product name; it is that both sides publish versioned evidence that CI can query.

Should I use Pact, OpenAPI, or both?

Use consumer-driven contracts to protect the interactions your application actually uses. Use OpenAPI or AsyncAPI checks to detect drift in the provider’s broader, documented interface. They answer different questions, so combining them gives wider coverage than choosing one as a replacement for the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Aspect Consumer-driven contract OpenAPI or AsyncAPI Combined use
Primary perspective One consumer’s required interactions The provider’s defined interface Consumer needs plus provider-wide definition
How it is produced Generated by executed consumer examples Maintained provider API or event schema Generate consumer contracts and version provider schemas
What it covers Requests and response parts that a particular consumer uses All documented resource states, endpoints, fields, or messages Used interactions plus undocumented or unused interface drift
Verification Provider replays interactions against an implementation or compatibility environment Schema and compatibility checks compare definitions and field changes Gate both interaction replay and definition compatibility
Typical blind spot Does not describe provider behavior no consumer has exercised Can describe possibilities no consumer actually depends on Each method covers the other’s blind spot

Pact documentation explains that a contract is generated by executed consumer examples and tests only communication parts actually used by that consumer, while an OpenAPI document describes all possible states of a resource. SmartBear describes bi-directional contract testing as a field-level comparison between a consumer contract from a mocking tool and a provider OpenAPI or AsyncAPI definition.

When to add schema checks

  • Add OpenAPI checks when endpoint additions, removals, undocumented fields, or provider-wide schema changes matter even if no current consumer test exercises them.
  • Add AsyncAPI checks for event channels and message schemas when the integration is asynchronous.
  • Keep the consumer contract as the release gate for behavior your application depends on; do not weaken it because a broad schema still looks valid.
  • Review differences between the schema and consumer contract with both provider and consumer owners before accepting a change.

How should CI run contract checks?

Run contract generation on every relevant consumer change, publish the result with immutable metadata, and verify it on every provider build and every candidate consumer version. The pipeline should make compatibility a normal build result rather than an occasional integration exercise.

  1. Consumer job: run unit and contract tests against the mock provider and generate the JSON contract.
  2. Publication job: publish the contract with commit and branch metadata to the broker or artifact store.
  3. Provider job: retrieve contracts for supported consumers and replay them against the provider’s compatibility environment.
  4. Schema job: compare version-controlled OpenAPI or AsyncAPI definitions when bi-directional checks are part of the policy.
  5. Compatibility gate: fail the candidate when a required interaction breaks, and expose the failing request, response mismatch, provider state, and contract version in CI artifacts.
  6. Release query: before deployment, check whether the exact provider version is compatible with every consumer version you intend to support.

Use branches and local replay for diagnosis

Publish branch-qualified contracts for pull requests so a provider change can be tested against an unmerged consumer and vice versa. When a failure is difficult to reproduce in shared CI, download the specific pact file and run provider verification locally or in a dedicated test environment. This preserves the failing interaction while shortening the feedback loop.

Handle volatile external sandboxes separately

If a third-party provider cannot run your contract suite directly, schedule checks against its sandbox rather than making every local build depend on external availability. Treat a sandbox failure as an investigation signal, distinguish provider incompatibility from an outage or rate limit, and keep deterministic local consumer tests as the baseline gate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I update a mock safely after a provider change?

Do not edit a fixture simply to make a failing test green. First classify the failure as an intentional consumer requirement change, a provider implementation change, or a provider documentation change. Update the contract only when the consumer’s required behavior has intentionally changed.

  1. Read the mismatch. Identify the exact request or response element that differs: method, URL, header, body field, status, type, pattern, or provider state.
  2. Check the consumer code. Confirm whether the client still reads or sends the disputed element. Remove unused assertions rather than preserving accidental coupling.
  3. Check the provider release or schema. Determine whether the implementation changed, the documentation changed first, or the provider is violating its published contract.
  4. Decide compatibility. If the provider can support both old and new behavior, add a backward-compatible interaction or matcher. If the consumer must change, update the client and its contract in the same reviewed change.
  5. Regenerate, do not hand-edit. Run the consumer contract test so the new JSON reflects executed behavior.
  6. Verify all consumers. Have the provider replay old and new contract versions that it claims to support before merging or releasing.
  7. Record the decision. Keep the failing interaction and the compatibility discussion with the change so future maintainers know why a matcher, field, or scenario exists.

Examples of safe and unsafe updates

  • Safe: replace an exact generated identifier with a type matcher when the consumer only requires a string identifier.
  • Safe: add a separate validation-error interaction when the client now handles that branch intentionally.
  • Unsafe: delete a status assertion because the provider started returning a different status without a consumer decision.
  • Unsafe: copy a newly expanded sample payload into every fixture even though the client reads none of the added fields.
  • Unsafe: change the mock response while leaving the production client and provider verification untested.

What are the most common drift failures?

The mock passes but production serialization fails

This usually means the test bypasses the real API client. Route the contract test through the production module and assert the serialized method, path, query, headers, and body.

A provider adds fields and hundreds of tests fail

The fixtures are probably matching the entire payload. Reduce the response to fields the consumer reads and use type or pattern matchers for legitimate variability.

A generated timestamp or identifier causes false failures

Replace exact sample values with type, pattern, or provider-state matchers. Keep exact matching for values that drive a consumer decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provider verification is flaky

Make provider states deterministic, seed known records, and stub downstream dependencies. Separate external sandbox availability from local compatibility gates.

A change passes schema validation but breaks the client

The schema may still permit the response while the consumer contract captures a requirement the broad definition does not express. Run consumer interaction verification alongside OpenAPI or AsyncAPI checks.

No one knows which consumer is safe to break

Publish contracts with consumer name, branch, commit, and version, then query the broker or artifact store before changing the provider. A compatibility result tied to an exact version is more actionable than an unqualified “API is backward compatible” label.

What should an operating policy require?

A small set of enforceable rules keeps the system useful as the number of consumers grows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Every third-party call goes through a named client module.
  • Every meaningful client branch has an interaction, including success and relevant failures.
  • Contracts are generated by tests and published immutably; engineers do not edit generated files to bypass a failure.
  • Assertions cover consumer-visible requirements, not the provider’s entire example payload.
  • Provider states and downstream stubs are deterministic and reviewable.
  • Provider verification runs for every provider build and every candidate consumer version that must remain supported.
  • OpenAPI or AsyncAPI definitions are version-controlled and checked when broad interface drift matters.
  • Release gates retain the exact request, mismatch, provider state, and contract version.
  • Intentional API changes are reviewed with the owners of affected consumers before mocks are updated.

With these rules, a mock becomes a continuously checked compatibility artifact. Consumer-driven contracts protect the behavior your application actually uses; provider schemas protect the wider interface; and CI connects both before a vendor change reaches production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can contract tests replace end-to-end tests?

No. Contract tests isolate an integration point and prove that each side honors the agreed interaction, but they do not validate a complete user journey across your database, queues, frontend, and operational configuration. Keep a smaller set of end-to-end tests for those cross-system flows.

How many interactions should one consumer contract contain?

There is no useful fixed count. Add an interaction whenever the client sends a materially different request or takes a different response path; consolidate cases that exercise identical behavior so the contract remains understandable.

What if the vendor will not run my contract suite?

Run consumer verification locally against the mock, publish the contract, and schedule provider checks against the vendor’s sandbox or a controlled compatibility deployment when access is available. Keep sandbox outages separate from local build gates and investigate failures as either incompatibility, throttling, or service availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who owns a failing contract: the consumer team or the provider team?

The mismatch identifies the technical location, but ownership depends on intent. The consumer team owns an obsolete or incorrect expectation, the provider team owns an implementation that violates a supported interaction, and both teams should review an intentional breaking change before either contract is changed.
