If a conversation must never reach a cloud AI service, do not paste it into ChatGPT. ChatGPT does not provide a documented, per-conversation password lock that makes submitted text private from the service. For lower persistence, start a Temporary Chat, choose the least-personalized option available, do not save it, and review Data Controls. For highly sensitive material, use a protected local workflow or a separately vetted encrypted messenger instead.
These choices solve different problems. Temporary Chat hides a conversation from normal history and keeps it out of model improvement while it remains temporary, but OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Data Controls change model-improvement preferences but do not delete saved chats. Strong account authentication protects access to your account; it cannot retract text you already submitted.
What does “private” mean when you use ChatGPT?
People use “private” to describe several different protections. Decide which boundary matters before choosing a setting:

- Excluded from model improvement: the conversation is not used to improve models under the selected setting.
- Not remembered: the conversation does not create or update account memories.
- Deleted: you remove the saved conversation and separately address files, links, or other copies.
- Never sent to a cloud provider: the text remains on systems you control, subject to your device and backup security.
No single ChatGPT switch provides all five. A temporary session can reduce persistence, while deletion and account-security controls address different risks. If disclosure to a cloud provider is unacceptable, the only reliable boundary is to keep the original material outside ChatGPT.

Is there a locked-chat mode in ChatGPT?
There is no documented per-chat password or vault that makes an ordinary ChatGPT conversation inaccessible to the service while leaving it available in your account. The practical alternatives are Temporary Chat, Data Controls, deletion, redaction, and a workflow that never sends the sensitive text.
A browser window marked private or incognito only limits local browser history and cookies. It does not change what ChatGPT receives or how the service handles a submitted conversation. Likewise, hiding a tab, archiving a chat, or relying on an account password is not the same as keeping the text out of the service.
How does Temporary Chat protect a conversation?
Temporary Chat is the closest built-in option to a lower-persistence session. OpenAI states that “Temporary Chats won’t appear in your chat history, won’t create memories, and won’t be used to train our models.” OpenAI may nevertheless keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
What Temporary Chat changes
- The conversation does not appear in your normal chat history while it remains temporary.
- It does not create or update memories.
- It is not used to improve models while it remains temporary.
- A safety copy may be retained for up to 30 days.
What Temporary Chat does not change
- You still submit the messages and any attachments to OpenAI’s service.
- It is not an encryption boundary that keeps the provider from receiving the text.
- Personalization choices can matter: depending on the option selected, a temporary session may use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins.
- Third-party actions or connected services can have their own retention policies.
How to start a lower-persistence session
- Open ChatGPT and choose New chat.
- Select Temporary Chat using the current temporary-chat control. The exact location and wording can vary by app and account.
- Before sending the first message, select the least-personalized option available if ChatGPT presents a choice about memories, custom instructions, plugins, or connected actions.
- Paste only the minimum, redacted material needed for the task.
- Do not choose any command that saves, pins, or otherwise preserves the conversation as a regular chat.
Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat subject to ordinary account settings. Treat the temporary session as disposable from the start; do not use it as a draft folder for text you intend to keep.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats for model improvement?
Use ChatGPT’s Data Controls to turn off the model-improvement preference for your account if that matches your risk tolerance. This is an account preference, not a deletion tool.
What the setting does
Turning off model improvement changes how eligible conversations are used for improving models. It does not remove conversations already stored in your account, hide them from your chat list, or erase uploaded material.
What to do in the interface
- Open your account menu in ChatGPT.
- Go to Settings, then Data Controls (the label can differ slightly between web and mobile).
- Disable the control that permits your content to be used for model improvement.
- Confirm the change if ChatGPT asks you to do so.
- Review the setting again after a major app update or when switching between accounts, because preferences can be account-specific.
Use Temporary Chat when you also want the conversation out of normal history and excluded from model improvement while temporary. Use Data Controls for an ongoing preference on ordinary chats. Neither setting means that text never reached OpenAI.

How can I keep sensitive text entirely outside ChatGPT?
For medical records, credentials, legal strategy, unreleased intellectual property, regulated data, or anything whose disclosure to a cloud provider is unacceptable, use a local protected workflow. A separately vetted encrypted messenger may be appropriate for communication with another person, but it is not a substitute for local processing when the text must not leave your devices.
A local protected workflow
- Classify the material. Identify people, account numbers, secrets, health identifiers, exact addresses, customer data, and proprietary passages.
- Choose a local tool. Use an offline notes editor, local document, or locally running model that your organization has reviewed. Keep the source file in an encrypted storage volume where possible.
- Limit synchronization. Check whether the editor, operating system, backup agent, or removable drive uploads copies automatically. Configure backups deliberately rather than assuming “local” means “no cloud.”
- Restrict access. Use a separate device account, a strong unlock method, current security updates, and full-disk encryption supported by the operating system.
- Process only what is necessary. If you later need ChatGPT, create a sanitized excerpt that removes identifying and proprietary details before sending it.
- Control the copies. Delete temporary exports, clipboard history, screenshots, and generated files that contain the original text, then verify your backup and recycle-bin policies.
This approach trades ChatGPT’s convenience for a clearer disclosure boundary. Your device, backups, malware exposure, and people with access to the device still determine the local risk.
What should I redact before using even a Temporary Chat?
Redaction reduces the consequences of a disclosure; it does not turn ChatGPT into a private vault. Replace direct identifiers and secrets before you paste anything.
- Names, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, and customer IDs.
- Account, credit-card, tax, passport, insurance, and medical-record numbers.
- Passwords, API keys, recovery codes, private keys, and session tokens.
- Exact home, workplace, or facility addresses and precise location data.
- Dates of birth and combinations of facts that identify a person when names are removed.
- Unreleased source code, contracts, research text, or proprietary business plans that would be harmful if copied.
Use consistent placeholders such as PERSON_A or ACCOUNT_1 so the model can follow relationships without seeing the real identifiers. Keep a private mapping only on your protected system, and do not paste the mapping into the same conversation.

Use the following sequence when you need one-off assistance but do not want an ordinary, personalized chat.
- Make the disclosure decision first. If the source text cannot be sent to a cloud provider, stop and use the local workflow instead.
- Prepare a redacted excerpt. Remove secrets and identifiers before opening ChatGPT.
- Start a new Temporary Chat. Select the least-personalized option available before the first message.
- Disable model improvement if appropriate. Set the account’s Data Controls preference according to your organization’s policy and risk tolerance.
- Ask the narrowest question. Avoid pasting an entire file when a short abstract or synthetic example will answer the question.
- Do not save the session. Saving changes it into a regular chat.
- Clean up your source material. Remove temporary redacted files and review clipboard, screenshots, and exports.
- Review connected features. If plugins, actions, or connected apps were available, check their separate retention terms before using them with sensitive text.
For recurring work, document this sequence in your team’s handling policy. A written rule prevents someone from treating a temporary session as a secure archive or from assuming that a model-improvement opt-out deletes prior conversations.
How do I remove ordinary chats and related copies?
Deletion is a separate task from changing model-improvement preferences. Turning off model improvement “does not delete or hide saved chats.”

- Review connected apps or actions that may have received data under their own policies.
- Check downloaded exports, email attachments, screenshots, and local backups for copies.
- Repeat the review for every device and account used to access the material.
Keep a record of what your organization requires you to delete and when. The controls for a conversation, an uploaded file, a shared link, and an export can be separate, so do not assume one deletion button covers every copy.

A hardware security key protects account login; it does not change ChatGPT’s retention rules or undo data already submitted. It is useful against account takeover, not as a replacement for Temporary Chat, redaction, or deletion.
What a key protects
A supported key can provide phishing-resistant authentication for the account. Yubico documents that the YubiKey 5 NFC supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, described as a hardware-bound passkey, and NFC tap authentication; its compatibility list includes OpenAI. Availability and enrollment steps depend on the account, device, and sign-in method.
What a key cannot protect
- It cannot stop ChatGPT from receiving a prompt you submit.
- It cannot shorten a safety retention period for a Temporary Chat.
- It cannot remove saved chats, uploaded files, shared links, or exports.
- It cannot protect text copied into another person’s account or a connected service.
Enable a hardware key, authenticator, or other strong sign-in method where supported, and keep a secure recovery method. Treat authentication and content handling as two different controls.

The right choice depends on the boundary you need, not on the word “private” alone.
| Option | What it changes | Retention boundary | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary Chat | Keeps the chat out of history and model improvement while temporary | A copy may remain up to 30 days for safety | One-off assistance with reduced persistence | The text is still submitted to OpenAI |
| Data Controls | Changes the model-improvement preference | Saved chats remain unless separately deleted | An ongoing account preference | Does not erase existing chats |
| Local protected workflow | Keeps the original text outside ChatGPT | Depends on device, access, and backup security | Material that must not reach a cloud AI service | No ChatGPT generation unless sanitized text is later shared |
| Hardware security key | Strengthens account authentication | Does not affect prompt retention | Protecting account access | Cannot undo submitted data |
Choose Temporary Chat when
You need a quick answer, can tolerate the text being processed by OpenAI, and mainly want to avoid ordinary history, memory updates, and model improvement while the session remains temporary.
Choose a local workflow when
Your policy forbids cloud disclosure, the material is regulated or highly identifying, or the harm from a provider retaining a safety copy is unacceptable.

Add Data Controls and a security key when
You want durable account-level preferences and stronger protection against someone else signing in. These additions complement, but do not replace, careful content handling.
What mistakes undermine privacy controls?
- Saving a Temporary Chat: this converts it to a regular chat. Do not save it for convenience.
- Confusing an opt-out with deletion: model-improvement settings do not delete or hide saved conversations.
- Pasting the original before redaction: editing the text afterward cannot retract the first submission.
- Ignoring attachments: a clean prompt can still expose sensitive data through an uploaded document or image.
- Overlooking connected services: actions, plugins, or apps may have separate retention policies.
- Relying on account security alone: a strong login prevents some unauthorized access but does not change server-side retention.
- Leaving local copies behind: exports, screenshots, clipboard managers, and backups can preserve the material after you delete a chat.
When an accidental disclosure occurs, stop sending additional context, rotate any exposed credentials, delete the relevant chat and related copies, review connected services, and follow your organization’s incident procedure.

How should a team handle private ChatGPT use?
Teams should define categories rather than telling people simply to “be careful.” A workable policy can classify material as public, internal, confidential, or prohibited from cloud AI services.
- For public or synthetic examples, ordinary chats may be acceptable under the team’s account settings.
- For internal material, require redaction and the approved Data Controls preference.
- For confidential material, require Temporary Chat only when cloud disclosure is allowed and prohibit saving or connected actions.
- For prohibited material, require a local protected workflow and approved encrypted communication channel.
Assign an owner to review settings, connected apps, file libraries, shared links, and account-recovery methods. Recheck the procedure whenever ChatGPT changes its interface or your organization changes its data classification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Temporary Chat still use my existing personalization?
It can, depending on the personalization choice and features enabled on your account. Existing memories, custom instructions, plugins, or connected actions may affect a temporary session, so choose the least-personalized option and avoid connected features for sensitive prompts.
Does using a private browser window prevent ChatGPT from retaining a conversation?
No. Private browsing mainly limits local history and cookie storage on that device. It does not alter the message sent to ChatGPT, the temporary-chat safety copy, or the account’s saved-chat controls.

Create a sanitized summary or synthetic example on a protected device, remove identifiers and secrets, and send only that excerpt if cloud processing is permitted. If the original cannot be disclosed to a cloud provider, use a local protected tool instead.
Should I rotate a password after accidentally pasting it into ChatGPT?
Yes. Treat a pasted password, API key, recovery code, or private key as exposed: revoke or rotate it immediately, then remove the conversation and any related files or exports. Deleting the chat does not make an already-used credential safe again.
