Keeping a greenhouse operating during an outage starts with protecting the systems that matter most to the crop—not with choosing a generator by wattage alone. Make a season-specific list of essential loads, account for motor-starting demand, and prepare a safe backup-power and heating plan before the grid fails.

Decide what must keep running

Outage priorities change with the season and the greenhouse. In cold weather, loss of heat or heater controls can threaten crops; in warm weather, stopped ventilation, cooling, pumps, or irrigation may become the urgent problem. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Greenhouse Engineering, NRAES-33 discusses how outage concerns vary by season, while the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension addresses storm impacts on greenhouses and crops in Hurricane and Storm Damage to Greenhouse and Greenhouse Crops.

List equipment by function and decide which items must operate at the same time. For each motor-driven device, record the nameplate information and electrical characteristics, including voltage, phase, horsepower, and running current. Note its starting requirement if available from the manufacturer. Include only loads needed to protect the crops or maintain essential operations; identify equipment that can be shut off or delayed.

  • Potential winter-critical loads: heaters, heater fans, and controls.
  • Potential warm-weather-critical loads: ventilation fans, cooling equipment, well or water pumps, and irrigation.
  • Site-specific loads: any additional equipment necessary for your crops, water supply, controls, or facility.

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation’s Best Management Practices for Energy, Water & Waste in Alberta Greenhouses distinguishes between backup capacity for all systems and capacity for critical systems. Choosing the latter may reduce the size of the system required, but only if the omitted loads can safely remain off.

Size backup power for simultaneous loads and motor starts

Do not select a generator from the total of running watts alone. The University of Florida IFAS Extension’s Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations recommends estimating the essential equipment that must run concurrently and accounting for the power needed to start as well as operate it. Well pumps and ventilation fans are often among the larger loads.

UF/IFAS notes that motor starting amperage may be two to seven times the running current. That is a rule of thumb, not a universal multiplier: actual starting demand depends on the motor and equipment. The publication also gives a rough screening rule of about three times the wattage of the largest motor for starting it. Use manufacturer specifications and confirm the generator’s capacity for the particular voltage, motor phase, and combination of loads rather than treating that estimate as a final sizing calculation.

Oxseryn 4400-Watts Inverter Generator, Open Frame Generator Gas Powered, Emergency Home Backup, RV Ready 30A Outlet, EPA Compliment
  • Powerful Output: 4400 peak watts and 3400 running watts, 2*120V AC ports, 1* 30A RV port, 1*12V DC port, 14 hours runtime at 25% load
  • Gas Powered: 2 gallon fuel tank capital
  • Features: Inverter technolog, ECO mode, EPA compliment, RV ready, overload protection, low oil shutdown, cold start technology
  • Portable Generator: Weight 56lbs, lightweight and easy to move
  • Note: All Oxseryn generators are functionally tested in the factory, so there may be a slight smell of gas when you receive it

For context only, UF/IFAS illustrates that a 5-kilowatt generator at 230 volts produces an estimated 21.7 amperes. This is the publication’s electrical example, not a recommendation for greenhouse capacity.

  1. Build the essential-load inventory for the season and outage conditions you need to cover.
  2. Record running and starting requirements for each motor and determine which loads must run together.
  3. Ask equipment manufacturers and a qualified electrician to verify that the proposed generator can start and operate that load combination.
  4. Decide whether the goal is to power all systems or only the essential ones, and document what staff should shed or delay.

Starting several large motors at once can exceed available capacity. UF/IFAS advises starting the largest or heaviest motor first and avoiding simultaneous starts of multiple large motors. The exact sequence for your equipment should be included in the site’s operating instructions.

Prepare a safe connection and a separate heating plan

A generator should not be connected to greenhouse wiring through an improvised arrangement. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Greenhouse Engineering, NRAES-33 covers standby-power installation considerations. Have a licensed electrician review the transfer arrangement, utility requirements, equipment, and applicable local codes. Plan for an appropriate transfer switch, and place the generator in a dry, accessible location with exhaust routed outdoors.

Backup electricity and emergency heat are related but distinct contingencies. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation recommends a complete heating-failure plan as well as backup power sized for critical equipment. If winter production depends on heat, identify in advance where emergency heating equipment could be rented and who is responsible for arranging it.

Use alarms, fuel, and maintenance to make the plan workable

A generator that is unavailable, out of fuel, or unable to start a critical motor will not protect the crop. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s Greenhouses: Heating, Cooling and Ventilation notes battery-powered temperature alarms as an option for warning when conditions move outside an acceptable range. Decide who receives alerts, who can reach the site, and who has authority to act.

The University of Connecticut Extension’s Prepare Your Greenhouses for Weather Events advises maintaining adequate fuel and operating generators monthly. UConn’s farm-weather guidance also recommends seasonal checks and regular maintenance. Follow the generator manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and keep the schedule, fuel arrangements, and operating directions accessible to staff.

Respond to an outage with a site-specific sequence

Write and post a procedure tailored to the installed generator and greenhouse wiring. The following sequence is a planning framework, not a substitute for the equipment’s instructions or the electrician-approved switching procedure:

  1. Confirm the outage and assess immediate crop risks, especially temperature, heating, ventilation, and water delivery.
  2. Reduce or disconnect nonessential loads according to the site’s load-shedding list.
  3. Bring backup power online using the installed transfer equipment and its written operating instructions.
  4. Start large motors sequentially in the planned order; do not start multiple large motors at once.
  5. Verify that critical heating, ventilation, pumping, or irrigation equipment is actually operating.
  6. Monitor greenhouse conditions and water delivery, and contact the utility or service provider as appropriate.
  7. After grid power returns, follow the site’s recovery procedure and continue checking crop and facility conditions.

Keep written contacts and operating instructions where staff can find them during an outage. The University of Connecticut Extension’s Preparing Farm Operations for Extreme Weather: General Strategies for Producers recommends identifying vulnerable systems and backup plans before an event.

Greenhouse outage-preparedness checklist

  • Inventory vulnerable equipment and identify essential loads separately for cold- and warm-weather conditions.
  • Document voltage, phase, horsepower, running current, and motor-starting requirements; verify generator capacity for simultaneous loads.
  • Choose which loads can be shed or delayed, and write down the motor-start sequence.
  • Have a licensed electrician review the transfer arrangement, utility requirements, location, exhaust routing, and local-code requirements.
  • Keep adequate fuel for the anticipated event, operate the generator monthly, and follow a routine inspection and maintenance schedule.
  • Test temperature alarms and assign responsibility for receiving alerts and responding.
  • Write a heating-failure plan, including contacts for rental emergency-heating equipment if needed.
  • Make operating instructions and emergency contacts accessible to everyone expected to respond.
