Use AI to reason about requirements, discover unfamiliar paths, draft scenarios and diagnose failures—but do not let an unconstrained model decide what a release-gating test does at run time. The reliable pattern is to review and compile an AI proposal into a versioned execution artifact, then run that artifact with deterministic data, mocks, assertions, timeouts, isolation and evidence capture. In this design, AI expands exploratory and goal-based coverage while a conventional runner supplies repeatable pass/fail decisions for CI.

This separation answers the central enterprise problem: models are probabilistic, while a release gate must produce the same result under the same conditions and leave an audit trail explaining why.

What does it mean to separate AI reasoning from deterministic execution?

It means assigning different jobs to two layers. An AI agent can interpret a business goal such as “a customer can change a delivery address,” identify edge cases, choose promising workflows and suggest assertions. A deterministic test runner executes an approved representation of that intent—fixed steps, API mappings, payloads, expected outcomes and validation rules—without asking a model to improvise during the run.

Microsoft Commerce Platforms software engineering manager Ram Mohan Reddy Gudupalli summarizes the tension as: “The nature of AI is probabilistic, but testing requires deterministic responses.” The practical answer is not to remove AI; it is to put an approval and compilation boundary between model output and release-gating execution.

What belongs on the reasoning side?

  • Interpreting approved requirements, process documents, API contracts and existing tests.
  • Proposing scenarios, including unusual sequences and coverage gaps that scripted suites may miss.
  • Exploring an unfamiliar application to discover viable journeys.
  • Suggesting diagnosis or a repair when a compiled test fails.
  • Summarizing evidence for an engineer, without changing the recorded result.

What belongs on the deterministic side?

  • The exact actions, locators, API calls, inputs and expected outcomes selected for execution.
  • Controlled test data, isolated browser contexts, dependency versions, seeds and timeouts.
  • Assertions over structured responses, domain invariants and guardrail outcomes.
  • Trace, log, screenshot, network and environment capture.
  • The pass/fail decision that blocks or permits a release.

Where should an AI agent stop and the test runner take over?

The handoff should occur after a scenario is reviewed and before it can affect a production CI gate. A useful pipeline has six stages, with an explicit policy or human gate between proposal and execution.

  1. Ground the agent. Provide approved business-process documents, API specifications, policy rules, existing tests and known constraints. Record which sources were available so a later reviewer can explain the proposal.
  2. Ask for a proposal, not an unreviewed commit. Have the agent describe the goal, preconditions, data, steps, expected outcomes, negative cases and suggested assertions. Keep generated behavior visible for review.
  3. Approve and compile. A person or policy service accepts, edits or rejects the scenario. Microsoft’s Enterprise Test Platform pattern creates a TC JSON execution context that locks every step, API mapping, input payload, expected output and validation assertion.
  4. Execute the artifact. Run the approved context in Playwright or an equivalent runner. Pin dependencies, seed known data, isolate browser contexts, set global timeouts and collect traces.
  5. Validate independently. Assertions should check structured outputs, domain invariants and safety or guardrail outcomes rather than trusting the agent’s self-assessment.
  6. Feed back evidence. Store the complete run record. If it fails, let an agent diagnose the evidence and propose a reviewed change; never silently rewrite the test and rerun it as if nothing happened.

Microsoft describes the accountability principle this way: “The real innovation wasn’t adding AI to testing, it was making AI accountable through deterministic execution, independent validation, and enterprise governance.”

How do AI-assisted and deterministic tests compare?

Neither approach replaces the other. Deterministic regression tests are the release gate; agentic runs add breadth, investigation and goal validation where a fixed script is expensive to author or likely to miss novel behavior.

Dimension AI-led exploratory or goal validation Compiled deterministic regression
Reproducibility Variable unless prompts, model, tools, data and context are frozen High when dependencies, data, seeds and execution context are pinned
Novel-behavior coverage Strong at proposing unfamiliar paths and combinations Limited to encoded paths, but consistent on every run
Assertion robustness Can suggest useful checks but may overfit wording Strong contracts over schemas, invariants and explicit outcomes
Failure diagnosis Good at interpreting traces and forming hypotheses; output needs review Clear machine result and evidence, but less adaptive explanation
Runtime cost Usually higher because model calls and exploration add latency Predictable once the suite and infrastructure are established
Environment isolation Must be deliberately constrained; live services can change the result Can enforce fresh contexts, mocks and controlled fixtures
Trace quality Useful only if browser and tool events are captured independently Repeatable traces, DOM snapshots, network events, console logs and screenshots
Security boundary Requires strict tool permissions and limits on data exposure Uses the narrower permissions encoded in the test and runner
Approval workflow Needs review before generated behavior becomes executable Changes go through normal code or artifact review
Auditability Must retain prompts, model identity, tool calls and proposal history Version control plus execution evidence provides a stable record

How do you compile an AI proposal into a reproducible test?

Define a contract that is ordinary enough for engineers and policy systems to inspect. A compiled scenario should contain, at minimum:

  • A unique scenario identifier and version.
  • The business goal, preconditions and permitted test environment.
  • Ordered UI actions or API operations with explicit parameters.
  • Locator strategy (prefer role, label or test-id locators where available).
  • Input payloads and references to versioned fixtures or seeded records.
  • Expected status codes, schemas, state transitions and guardrail outcomes.
  • Timeouts, retry policy and allowed nondeterminism.
  • The model, prompt, source-document and tool-version hashes that produced the proposal.
  • The approving person, policy decision or change request.

AMD’s Agentic Testing blueprint illustrates this boundary by separating an LLM reasoning service, Playwright MCP browser tools and a UI/orchestrator, then generating a downloadable Pytest module that can rerun independently. The generated module is inspectable and versionable; the model is not in the execution loop.

How should Playwright be configured for stable CI?

Playwright supplies the deterministic mechanics, but only when its controls are used deliberately.

Isolate every test

Create a fresh browser context for each test so cookies, storage and permissions cannot leak between cases. Use fixtures to create and clean test accounts or records, and avoid relying on state left by a previous test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use resilient locators and retrying assertions

Prefer accessible roles, labels and stable test IDs over brittle CSS or text fragments. Playwright’s auto-waiting and retrying assertions allow the application to reach the expected state without inserting arbitrary sleeps. For generated text, assert a required substring, pattern or structured field when exact wording is not a contract.

Control parallelism and time

Playwright recommends one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility. You can shard a suite across CI machines when the environment supports controlled parallelism, but each shard needs isolated data and clear ownership of fixtures. Set a global timeout so a hung browser or service stops cleanly and emits a report rather than consuming an unlimited CI slot.

Capture a complete trace

Enable traces for failures (and for selected diagnostic runs) so reviewers can inspect DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs and screenshots. Keep the trace alongside the test result and environment metadata. Playwright’s CI documentation uses the pre-built mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.64.0-noble image in examples; treat that as documentation context, not a permanent version recommendation. Pin the image and browser revision you actually approve, then update them through normal dependency review.

How do you test an agent without making results depend on live systems?

Mock external services whenever the purpose is to test the agent’s behavior, orchestration or policy rather than the third party itself. A live payment, search, CRM or notification service can change data, latency, permissions or wording between runs. Contract-tested mocks provide fixed responses, injected failures and repeatable timing.

What should be asserted?

  • Structured output: Validate JSON schema, required fields, types and enumerated values.
  • Domain invariants: Check that a refund never exceeds the captured amount, a permission change is authorized, or a status transition follows the business state machine.
  • Guardrails: Verify that disallowed tools, data classes or actions are blocked and that escalation occurs when required.
  • Observable side effects: Confirm the expected record, event or message was created exactly once.
  • Flexible language: Use contains or regular-expression checks for generated prose when wording is not the requirement.

Flowable’s agent-testing guidance favors these tolerant, structured contracts over exact free-text matches. Exact string equality is appropriate only when the wording itself is a specified interface, such as a machine command or legally mandated notice.

How can an enterprise make AI-generated tests auditable?

Auditability starts before the first browser action. Store the prompt template, model identifier and configuration, tool and runner versions, source-document versions, test-data version, approval decision and execution-context hash. Retain the generated artifact that actually ran, not merely a chat transcript.

At run time, record timestamps, actor or service identity, permissions, environment, dependency image, seed data, network interactions, screenshots, DOM or accessibility snapshots, console logs, assertion results and final status. Mask personal and regulated data in traces and restrict access by role. UiPath’s agentic-testing guidance highlights audit-ready trails, PII masking, role-based access and durable execution as operational requirements rather than optional reporting features.

Use independent validation: the component that proposes an action should not be the sole authority that declares it safe or correct. Gudupalli describes this challenge pattern as, “Each time some action is done by the AI, another agent comes and challenges it.” In practice, the challenger can be a deterministic policy check, schema validator or separately governed verification service; it does not have to be another unconstrained model.

How should agentic tests fit into a release strategy?

Keep two lanes with different failure semantics.

Blocking regression lane

Run compiled tests with pinned dependencies, isolated fixtures, deterministic mocks and explicit assertions. A failure blocks the release until an engineer investigates the evidence or approves a documented change.

Exploratory and goal-validation lane

Run agents against non-production data to search for coverage gaps, try alternate journeys and assess whether a business goal remains achievable after a change. Record findings and convert valuable discoveries into reviewed deterministic tests. Slack Engineering reports more than 200 agentic end-to-end workflows run in test workspaces with non-production data using Playwright MCP, Playwright CLI and agent-generated Playwright tests; that illustrates scale, not a guarantee that exploratory results are suitable as release gates.

Slack’s concise framing is useful: “Tests enforce journeys. Agents verify goals.” Treat a goal failure as a prioritized investigation until it is encoded into a stable contract or shown to be an intentional change.

What causes nondeterministic AI test failures, and how do you fix them?

The model chooses a different path

Symptom: The same prompt produces different clicks or API calls. Fix: Move path selection into the approval step, compile the chosen actions, and keep temperature or sampling settings and model versions recorded for proposal runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data or environment drift changes the outcome

Symptom: A test passes in one workspace and fails in another. Fix: Seed fixtures, mock mutable dependencies, isolate accounts and record environment metadata. Never use production records as an implicit fixture.

Assertions are too literal

Symptom: A harmless wording change fails an otherwise correct test. Fix: Assert schemas, invariants, required terms or regex patterns; reserve exact matches for contractual text.

Timing and concurrency create races

Symptom: Retries change the result or a suite hangs. Fix: Use auto-waiting assertions, explicit readiness signals, bounded global timeouts and controlled worker or shard allocation. Do not hide races with unbounded sleeps.

The application or model changed silently

Symptom: Coverage degrades without a code-level failure. Fix: Re-evaluate tests when models, prompts, tools, policies or source data change. Microsoft’s agentic-behavior guidance calls for specifying, grounding, controlling, verifying and observing behavior because these changes can create drift traditional tests miss.

What operating checklist should a test platform team adopt?

  • Define decisions an agent may make autonomously and those requiring human or policy approval.
  • Ground proposals in approved requirements, APIs, policies and existing tests.
  • Store prompts, model IDs, tool versions, data versions and execution-context hashes.
  • Compile approved scenarios into ordinary test code or a signed execution context.
  • Run release gates with pinned dependencies, isolated data and deterministic mocks.
  • Keep exploratory agent runs separate from blocking CI checks.
  • Capture traces and structured assertions so a failure can be reproduced without asking an agent to “try again.”
  • Apply least-privilege permissions, PII masking, retention rules and role-based access to evidence.
  • Reassess coverage and drift whenever models, prompts, tools or source data change.

Salesforce’s architecture guidance reaches the same conclusion from a governance angle: combine probabilistic reasoning with deterministic workflows, permissions, audit trails, compliance rules and human-in-the-loop gates. Step’s controlled workflow similarly keeps AI for investigation and reasoning while preserving inspectable, versionable packages for CI/CD execution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent run directly inside a production release gate?

Only for narrowly bounded, pre-approved actions with deterministic checks around it; an unconstrained model should not choose release behavior at run time. Keep model-driven exploration in a non-blocking lane and gate releases on compiled artifacts.

Should temperature be set to zero to make AI tests deterministic?

A low or zero sampling setting can reduce variation, but it cannot guarantee identical behavior across model updates, tool changes, data drift or service-side revisions. Reproducibility comes from freezing the executable artifact and runtime, then recording model settings as provenance.

How do you reproduce a failure after an agent has moved on?

Rerun the stored execution artifact with the same fixture version, dependency image, browser revision, permissions and environment metadata. Use the captured trace, network events and assertions to diagnose; do not rely on the agent remembering its earlier conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best first workflow for introducing agentic testing?

Choose a low-risk, non-production business journey with stable test data and a clear goal. Let an agent propose variants, require review, compile the accepted path into a normal test, and measure whether the resulting discoveries improve deterministic coverage.
