Keep bats out by maintaining the building envelope and, if a colony is already inside, using a locally permitted, well-monitored one-way exclusion—not by sealing an active entrance. If a bat enters a classroom, keep people away and contact local public health or animal control for safe handling and rabies advice. The right timing and legal requirements vary by location.

Prevent bats from entering

Make bat prevention part of routine facilities maintenance. Inspect rooflines, soffits, vents, screens, door gaps, and utility penetrations for openings or damage. Bats can fit through gaps as small as ¼ inch, according to the CDC, so check small openings as well as obvious holes.

  • Keep vent screens intact and doors closed tightly; use suitable draft guards where needed.
  • Seal inactive gaps with durable materials such as caulk, steel wool, or appropriate flashing. Do not seal an opening that bats are actively using until exclusion is complete.
  • Keep dumpsters and cafeteria waste containers closed. Shielded or motion-activated outdoor lighting can reduce insects near entrances, where bats may forage.

Michigan DNR recommends school staff inspect rooflines, soffits, and vents and seal openings with durable materials. See its school and business guidance.

What to do if a bat gets into a classroom

  1. Clear the room. Keep students and staff away from the bat. Do not touch, chase, or try to catch it.
  2. Call for local advice. Contact the local health department or animal control for safe capture and rabies-testing guidance. If anyone may have been bitten or scratched, seek prompt medical advice. A bite can be tiny or unnoticed, so do not rely on the absence of a visible mark.
  3. Consider an exit only when appropriate. Michigan DNR says staff may open exterior windows, close interior doors, and turn off lights to allow a bat to leave when appropriate. Follow public-health advice first, especially if anyone was asleep, cannot reliably report contact, or may have had direct contact.
  4. Do not release a bat that may need testing. Ask public health whether the bat should be captured for testing before anyone releases it. Contact a veterinarian as applicable if a pet had contact.

The CDC’s bat and rabies guidance advises avoiding contact with bats and consulting public health after possible exposure.

How to remove a roost from the building

A colony requires a complete exclusion plan, not simply plugging the most visible hole. Sealing a roost while bats remain inside can trap them or drive them into occupied areas. A qualified local wildlife-control operator is a sensible choice when access points are uncertain, work is complex, or local rules require professional involvement.

  1. Locate the roost and its routes. Watch the exterior around dusk for bats emerging, and look for staining or droppings near openings. Identify active exits as well as other potential openings; a single visible gap may not be the only route.
  2. Check the season and local rules before work begins. Ask the state wildlife agency whether the species, dates, or proposed work require a permit or professional. Do not schedule work that could trap flightless young.
  3. Fit one-way devices to active exits. Purpose-made valves, tubes, or netting should let bats leave but prevent their return. The device must be suitable for the opening and installed so it does not injure or entangle animals.
  4. Monitor for the locally required period. Do not seal an exit just because bats were seen leaving one evening. Confirm that bats have left, accounting for weather and reduced activity, and follow the applicable local guidance.
  5. Remove devices and seal openings permanently. Once the roost is confirmed empty, remove the one-way devices and close the openings with durable materials; maintain screens and other barriers afterward.

Duration guidance differs by source and jurisdiction: the Pennsylvania Game Commission guide recommends leaving valves in place five to seven nights. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission specifies at least four nights when the forecast overnight temperature is at least 50°F. These are not interchangeable nationwide rules; use current local requirements.

Choose exclusion dates for your location

There is no single safe exclusion calendar for every school. The CDC says fall or winter is generally best for bat-proofing and warns against trapping young during May–August. Michigan DNR describes a typical May–mid-August maternity season. Florida prohibits bat exclusion or removal from April 16 through August 14, while Illinois provides different seasonal windows and temperature conditions.

Check the current rules with the relevant state wildlife agency before starting. The Illinois Department of Public Health describes its state-specific exclusion guidance; dates and conditions there should not be applied to other states. Protected species, permits, and permitted work periods depend on the school’s jurisdiction.

Manage droppings and cleanup carefully

Bat or bird droppings can be associated with Histoplasma exposure when disturbed. The CDC/NIOSH identifies preventing droppings from accumulating as the best prevention. Restrict access to affected areas and assess the amount, location, building condition, weather, and proximity of people before disturbing a deposit. For substantial accumulations or work likely to create dust, seek qualified occupational-health or remediation advice rather than treating it as ordinary janitorial cleanup.

Approaches that do not solve a roost

Ultrasonic devices and chemical repellents do not eliminate bats from a roost, according to CDC/NIOSH. They are not substitutes for locating entry points, carrying out a correctly timed exclusion, and sealing openings after bats have left. A bat house may offer optional alternative shelter, but it does not remove bats from an occupied school or replace exclusion.
