Keep long-lived API keys out of source code and out of an AI coding agent’s ordinary workspace. Use narrowly scoped, short-lived credentials supplied through a vault or trusted proxy when possible; otherwise, restrict the agent’s access to files, environment variables, tools, and network destinations. Scan changes before committing, and revoke a credential promptly if you suspect it was exposed.
An AI tool can read a .env file if its workspace or tools let it read that file. Environment variables are not automatically safe either: an agent or code it runs may be able to access variables inherited by its process. The protection comes from limiting what the agent can access—not from assuming a particular filename or storage method makes a secret invisible.
Why is a secret in an AI coding workspace a risk?
A coding agent can use more than the text you type into a prompt. Depending on its permissions and setup, it may inspect workspace files, run commands, inherit environment variables, or interact with network services. A credential available through any of those paths can be exposed to the model, agent-generated code, command output, logs, or a commit.

Access varies with the tool, configuration, workspace, and permissions. The practical rule is to treat any secret the agent can access as potentially exposed to the agent’s work, and to give it only what the task requires.

OpenAI’s API-key guidance recommends storing keys in environment variables in a development environment, while its agent security guidance says to keep the application API key outside the environment. Those recommendations address different situations: environment variables can keep a key out of source code, but a more isolated design keeps a powerful application credential away from the agent entirely.
Which secrets should I keep away from an AI coding agent?
Start with credentials that can access production systems, customer data, cloud accounts, source-control accounts, or other valuable services. Then look for secrets the agent does not need for its assigned task, even if they are only for development.
- API keys, access tokens, passwords, and signing secrets.
- SSH private keys and certificate or key files such as
*.pemand*.p12. - Cloud CLI configuration and production configuration files.
- Contents of
.envfiles, other local secret files, and credentials in unrelated repositories. - Secrets copied into prompts, examples, tests, screenshots, logs, or documentation.
Inventory credentials by privilege, lifetime, and destination. This helps distinguish a temporary, read-only development credential from a long-lived production key. If the agent does not need a credential, the safest choice is not to make it available in the agent’s environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is the safest way to provide a credential when the agent needs one?
Prefer a vault or trusted proxy that supplies a short-lived, least-privilege credential for an approved host and operation. This avoids giving agent-generated code a long-lived application key. If a vault or proxy is not available, use a separate credential with the smallest permissions needed, keep it out of source files, and limit what the agent can access.
Vault or proxy injection
A secrets manager can hold the long-lived credential outside the agent workspace. A trusted proxy or vault-mediated workflow can provide a more restricted credential only for the allowed service or operation. Azure Key Vault and HashiCorp Vault are examples of secrets-manager products; the relevant security property is the controlled, limited delivery of credentials, not the product name.

OpenAI’s agent security documentation advises keeping the application API key outside the environment and describes vault or proxy substitution for approved hosts. In practice, do not place the powerful application key in a prompt, repository, or environment the agent can inspect. Configure the approved path so the agent’s task receives only the credential or operation it needs.
Environment variables
Environment variables are a useful way to avoid hardcoding a key in application source. OpenAI’s API-key guidance recommends this approach for development environments. But if an agent process inherits a variable, or can run commands that inspect the process environment, the key may still be within reach. Minimize inherited variables and exclude names matching token, secret, and password patterns where the agent environment allows it.
Use environment variables as a storage and configuration mechanism, not as proof that the agent cannot access the value. A variable available to the application process may also be available to code or commands the agent can run.
Encrypted CI or hosted-development secrets
For automated builds and hosted development environments, use encrypted secret facilities or a secrets manager rather than plaintext credentials in workflow files or project settings. GitHub recommends encrypted Actions or Codespaces secrets, or a secrets manager, instead of plaintext credentials. Grant access only to the jobs or environments that need the secret, and avoid forwarding it into an agent task without a specific need.
How do I configure an AI coding workspace to reduce secret exposure?
Restrict the agent’s workspace and inherited permissions before starting work. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance recommends sandboxed environments such as development containers, restricted shells, virtual machines, or ephemeral cloud workspaces, alongside restricted tools and egress controls.

- Isolate the task. Use a sandbox or dedicated workspace rather than giving an agent broad access to your normal user account or machine. Prefer an ephemeral workspace for work that does not need persistence.
- Limit visible files. Deny access to
.env*,*.pem,*.p12, SSH keys, cloud CLI directories, production configuration, and unrelated repositories. A deny rule is useful only if it is enforced by the environment or tools the agent uses; verify that the agent cannot reach the files by another path. - Trim the environment. Do not pass through every variable from your shell or machine. Exclude variables with names matching token, secret, or password patterns, and provide only task-specific values that are genuinely required.
- Restrict tools and network access. Allow only the tools and destinations needed for the task. Egress controls reduce the ways an accessible secret could be sent to an unapproved destination.
- Keep credentials task-scoped. If access is necessary, use a short-lived credential with minimum permissions and limit it to the approved service or operation.
- Review persistent agent instructions. Inspect agent-created or edited rules files and configuration. OWASP identifies persistent instruction files as security-critical surfaces, so treat changes to them as security-relevant rather than harmless project notes.
The exact control names and configuration paths depend on the coding tool and how it is hosted. The security objective is consistent: restrict the files, variables, commands, and network destinations available to the agent rather than relying on a single application setting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do I remove keys from code, prompts, and project files?
Search for literal credentials wherever project content can expose them—not just in the main application source. GitHub advises never to hardcode authentication credentials such as tokens, keys, or application secrets in code.
- Replace a literal key in application code with a named environment variable or a secret reference.
- Remove real credentials from examples, tests, prompts, documentation, and logs. Use clearly nonfunctional sample values where an example needs to show a setting’s shape.
- Check images and screenshots as well as text files; a visible key in an image is still exposed.
- Review generated changes for copied configuration, debug output, or test fixtures that include a real value.
Removing a value from the current working copy is not enough if it has already been committed. Treat a credential that entered Git history as exposed: revoke or rotate it, then remediate the repository history as appropriate. A later scan can find a leak, but it cannot make a credential safe again.
How should I scope, expire, and rotate keys?
Use a distinct credential for each application or task, with only the permissions that work requires. Set an expiration where supported, rotate credentials before expiry, revoke credentials that are no longer needed, and monitor their usage for unexpected activity.
Separate development credentials from production credentials. Avoid handing an agent an account-wide key when a narrower credential will do. Where a short-lived credential can be issued for one task, it reduces the time and scope in which accidental exposure can be useful to someone else.

There is no universally safe rotation interval in the cited guidance. Choose a schedule that fits the credential’s privilege, lifetime, and exposure risk, and follow the service’s requirements. If compromise is suspected, do not wait for the next scheduled rotation: revoke the credential promptly and issue a replacement only to the systems that still need it.
How do I check for secrets before committing agent changes?
Run secret scanning on both the working tree and the staged diff before a commit. Enable repository push protection and CI checks where available, and resolve findings before a secret enters Git history.
- Inspect the working tree. Scan all changed files, including generated files, documentation, test data, and configuration.
- Inspect what is staged. Stage the intended changes, then scan the staged diff as a separate check. A clean working-tree scan does not guarantee that the exact staged content has been checked.
- Resolve findings before committing. Remove real credentials and replace them with a safe reference. If a valid key was found, revoke or rotate it as well as removing it from the change.
- Use repository protections. Turn on push protection and CI scanning if your repository platform offers them. These checks add another opportunity to catch a leak, but should not replace careful access controls and review.
GitHub’s MCP documentation characterizes MCP scanning as a pre-commit safety check, not a system of record, and notes that its findings are ephemeral. Treat scanner output as a prompt to fix the source of a finding—not as durable secret storage, an audit history, or permission to leave a key in place.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if an AI tool commits or exposes a key?
Assume the credential may be compromised once it has been exposed, even if the commit is quickly removed or the value is no longer visible in the current version of a file. Revoke or rotate it, check for unexpected usage, and then clean up the affected files and repository history.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Revoke or rotate the credential. Do this promptly through the service that issued it. If it grants access to other credentials or systems, assess those as well.
- Check usage. Review available activity records for unexpected requests or access. Disable related access if you find suspicious activity.
- Remove the value from the project. Delete it from source, configuration, test data, documentation, prompts, or logs where it appears, and replace it with a safe reference.
- Address Git history. Removing a key from the latest file does not remove earlier committed copies. Follow your repository platform’s process for sensitive data in history, and coordinate with collaborators who may have fetched the affected commits.
- Prevent a repeat. Tighten workspace access, remove unnecessary inherited variables, and enable scanning or push protection before resuming agent work.
Do not wait for a scanner to confirm an exposure before taking action. Secret scanning helps detect accidental inclusion; it does not reverse access already granted to a leaked credential.

How do the main approaches compare?
The approaches differ in how much they rely on the agent behaving safely versus limiting what it can access. The strongest setup combines isolation, restricted credential delivery, and detection.
| Approach | What it helps with | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hardcoding a credential | None; it places the credential directly in code or project content. | Do not use it. A committed or copied value can persist in history, examples, tests, or generated changes. |
| Environment variable | Keeps the key out of application source when used in place of a literal. | Does not by itself prevent an agent or command from accessing an inherited variable. |
| Encrypted CI or hosted-development secret | Avoids storing credentials as plaintext in workflow or project configuration. | Access still needs to be limited to the jobs and environments that require the secret. |
| Vault or trusted proxy | Can keep a long-lived application key outside the agent environment and supply scoped access for approved work. | Requires a controlled integration and careful limits on the credential, host, and operation being authorized. |
| Sandbox and egress restrictions | Limits file, tool, and network access available to the agent. | Does not replace scoped credentials, scanning, or revocation if a secret is exposed. |
| Secret scanning and push protection | Can catch a credential in a working tree, staged change, or attempted push. | Detection is a backstop; a finding must be remediated, and a leaked key still needs to be revoked. |
No single row is a complete solution. A secret that is never available to the agent has less exposure risk than one merely hidden from the source file, while scans and repository protections help catch mistakes that remain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I commit a .env.example file?
Yes, if it contains only variable names and clearly nonfunctional sample values. Check that no real credentials were copied into it before committing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does deleting a secret from the latest commit make an exposed key safe again?
No. A prior commit may remain available in repository history or in copies already fetched by other people. Remove the value from the project history as appropriate, but revoke or rotate the credential itself.
Can an AI coding agent use an environment variable without seeing its value?
That depends on the tool and execution design. If the agent can run code or commands in a process that inherits the variable, do not assume the value is hidden; a vault or proxy can provide a more controlled route to the required operation.
