If an AI roleplay character keeps narrating your actions, dialogue, or decisions, the fastest fix is usually in the character setup rather than in the latest reply. Check the greeting first, then the character definition, the general turn-taking instructions, and the example dialogue. Rewrite any text that assigns your behavior to the bot, state the boundary as a positive behavior, and test one change over several turns. Platform controls such as temperature or message correction can help afterward, but they are secondary and vary by service. These edits improve the model’s guidance; they cannot guarantee that every model will always leave your character completely open.
Why is an AI character speaking for me?
The model is often copying a pattern it was shown. A greeting that says “you enter the room and sit down,” or a definition that describes the user as a fully acted character, teaches the bot that writing your actions is part of the exchange. Once that pattern appears in the opening context, later replies can continue it even when you would rather choose your own words and decisions.
Prompt design is inherently iterative: Google describes it as creating natural-language requests that elicit accurate, high-quality responses, and recommends trying different phrasing when an output misses the goal (Google Gemini prompt design strategies). Treat the behavior as a configuration problem to isolate, not as proof that the model is intentionally taking control.
Which prompt locations can cause the problem?
Each part of a character card or prompt has a different job. Inspect the locations in this order so you can identify the earliest place where the unwanted pattern is taught.

| Prompt location | What it teaches | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting or first message | The opening interaction pattern | Narration of your entrance, feelings, speech, or decisions |
| Character definition | Role, background, personality, and behavior | Sentences that make the user another character the bot must write |
| Main or system instructions | General turn-taking rules | Negative-only prohibitions with no positive description of the desired response |
| Example dialogue | The format the model should imitate | Examples where the assistant supplies both sides of the conversation |
| Generation settings | How freely the model samples text | Platform-specific controls such as temperature or message regeneration |
Names and locations differ by platform. Some systems combine the definition and system prompt, while others expose separate fields. The important distinction is functional: find the text that demonstrates the behavior, the text that defines the roles, and the text that controls the response format.
How do I fix the greeting?
Open the character editor and read the greeting as if it were a training example. Remove any sentence that decides what you do, say, think, feel, or choose. Keep the character’s own observations and actions, then end at a natural hand-off where you can respond.
- Copy the original greeting. Save it outside the editor so you can compare revisions or restore it if another change makes the behavior worse.
- Mark user-authored actions. Highlight phrases such as “you walk over,” “you feel nervous,” or “you reply.” Internal thoughts and choices count too; they are still decisions about your character.
- Replace the narration with the character’s viewpoint. A vendor support example recommends changing a sentence like “you enter the room and sit down” to wording such as
{{char}}watches{{user}}enter.” This is an editorial adaptation of that guidance, not a universally effective formula. - End before your turn. Let the character speak, act, or ask a question, then stop. Do not append a predicted answer from you to make the scene feel complete.
Better greeting pattern:
{{char}} looks up as {{user}} enters the room.
"You are later than I expected," {{char}} says, leaving space for {{user}} to answer.
Keep the greeting in the character’s voice. If the setup needs to mention the user’s appearance or history, describe that information as context rather than as an action the bot must perform on the user’s behalf.

Separate facts about the user from instructions about what the model should narrate. A definition can accidentally turn your persona into a second character by listing your personality, movements, and dialogue as if they were part of the assistant’s role.
Remove role confusion
Rewrite passages that say, in effect, “the user is shy, blushes, and answers briefly, so write those reactions.” Those details may be useful as optional background, but they should not be instructions for the bot to decide your next move. Instead, state what the character knows and how the character responds when you choose to reveal something.
Keep boundaries near the role description
Place the turn-taking rule where the platform gives the model its main character instructions. A compact statement is easier to preserve than a long list of exceptions. For example:

{{char}} controls only {{char}}'s speech, actions, observations, and internal thoughts.
Treat {{user}}'s speech, actions, thoughts, feelings, and decisions as unknown until {{user}} writes them.
End each reply with the scene open for {{user}} to choose what happens next.
This wording guides the model toward a positive behavior—respecting your autonomy—instead of only threatening a failure condition. SillyTavern’s documentation makes the same general point: “The AI will more easily follow instructions about what it should do than what it should not do” (SillyTavern prompts documentation).

Do not over-specify every possible mistake
A definition packed with repeated prohibitions can compete with the character’s actual personality and scene details. State the boundary once, define whose actions are controlled, and demonstrate the format in examples. If the platform has a separate system or author’s-note field, put broad turn-taking rules there and reserve the character definition for role and background.
What positive instruction should I use?
Describe the response you want to receive, not just the behavior you want removed. The following template is a starting point; adapt the terms to the platform’s variable names and formatting.
Write {{char}}'s responses while respecting {{user}}'s autonomy.
Only narrate {{char}}'s actions, words, perceptions, and thoughts.
Do not supply {{user}}'s dialogue, actions, thoughts, feelings, or decisions.
When {{char}} needs a response, pause and leave the choice to {{user}}.
The positive sentence gives the model a target pattern, while the following lines define the boundary precisely. Avoid claiming that any wording is a guaranteed lock. Models can still produce an occasional violation, especially when earlier context contains many examples of shared narration.
Use one consistent set of terms. If the prompt alternates between “player,” “user,” “reader,” and a character name, the model may not know whether those labels refer to the same participant. Likewise, distinguish {{char}} from a named non-player character if the platform supports more than one actor.
How do example dialogues teach the correct turn-taking?
Examples are demonstrations, not commentary. Show the character speaking or acting while leaving your side unwritten. SpicyChat’s support guidance suggests adding two or three example dialogues in the desired format; treat that count as platform advice rather than a scientifically established optimum (SpicyChat support: Why Is the Chatbot Speaking for Me?).

Use complete assistant turns and an open ending
<START>
{{user}}: I knock on the office door.
{{char}}: {{char}} looks up from the desk. "Come in. What brings you here?"
<START>
{{user}}: The storm cuts the power.
{{char}}: {{char}} reaches for a lantern and listens to the rain. "Stay close until the lights return."
These examples show that the user can initiate an action and that the character responds without inventing the user’s next line. Do not include a fake user reply after the character’s message. If every example contains both sides written by the assistant, the model may learn that completing the user’s turn is normal.
Vary the scene without changing the rule
Use examples with different emotions, locations, and response lengths, but keep the ownership of actions stable. One example can be dialogue-heavy and another can include physical action. The invariant is that the character controls only its own side and stops before your decision.
How do I test whether an edit worked?
Change one prompt location at a time and run several turns. Editing the greeting, definition, examples, and generation settings simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change helped or introduced a new problem.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Old messages may contain the very behavior you are trying to remove, so they can continue steering the model even after the card changes.
- Record a short baseline. Note the first place the bot speaks for you and copy the exact offending sentence. This gives you a concrete comparison rather than relying on memory.
- Edit one section. For example, revise only the greeting while leaving the definition and settings unchanged.
- Run several ordinary turns. Try a direct question, an action-only reply, and a situation where your character’s feelings are intentionally unstated. Look for invented speech, movement, thoughts, or decisions in each output.
- Keep or revert the change. If the boundary improves, preserve that version and move to the next suspected location. If not, restore it and test a different phrasing.
When comparing outputs, judge the specific failure mode. A reply that describes the room is not the same as one that decides your feelings; tightening the prompt around the actual failure is usually clearer than adding a general prohibition for every possibility.
Which platform controls can help after prompt edits?
Generation controls are secondary adjustments. SpicyChat’s support article mentions slightly lowering temperature, consistently correcting the first offending reply, or returning to a point before the behavior began (SpicyChat support guidance). The names, ranges, and availability of these controls vary, so use the labels shown by your service.
- Temperature: A small reduction may make outputs less variable, but it can also make the character flatter or more repetitive. There is no universal value that guarantees user autonomy.
- Message correction or regeneration: If the platform lets you edit the first bad reply, remove the invented user action and regenerate from that corrected context. Apply the correction consistently; leaving one example of the unwanted pattern can reinforce it.
- Branching or rewind: Return to the last turn before the behavior started, then continue with the corrected message. Starting over is often cleaner than trying to overwrite many contaminated turns.
- Context limits: Long chats can push the carefully written greeting or examples farther from the model’s active context. If the platform exposes a context or memory setting, verify that the relevant instructions remain included.
Do not treat a setting change as proof that the prompt is fixed. Test the same scenarios after any generation adjustment because a less variable output can conceal a boundary problem without removing its cause.

What if the character still writes my actions?
First identify whether the behavior comes from current instructions or from conversation history. A fresh chat with the same card separates those possibilities.

If it fails immediately
Re-read the greeting and examples for hidden user narration. Search for second-person verbs (“you walk,” “you decide,” “you feel”) and for example exchanges that include an assistant-written user turn. Remove or rewrite those passages before adding more rules.
If it fails after several turns
Inspect the last few messages for a gradual shift. You may have accepted an invented action in an earlier reply, which then became context the model imitates. Correct the first violation, rewind if possible, and continue without confirming the bot’s invented choice.
If only certain scenes trigger it
Add one example covering that scene type while preserving the same ownership boundary. For instance, if emotional scenes cause the model to assign feelings to you, demonstrate the character noticing uncertainty and asking what you feel rather than naming your emotion.
If no prompt change is reliable
Some models or platform wrappers may not honor the boundary consistently. The available evidence is troubleshooting guidance, not comparative reliability data across products, so avoid promising a universal fix. Use the platform’s feedback, report, or model-selection options if they exist, and keep your own turns explicit enough to correct the context quickly.
Is the chatbot speaking for me a prompt-injection attack?
Usually, no. In ordinary roleplay, the bot is following a poorly demonstrated turn-taking pattern. OpenAI defines prompt injection as third-party content misleading a model into doing something the user did not request (OpenAI: Understanding prompt injections). Microsoft separately describes role-play instructions that try to make a model adopt a persona without its existing limitations as a user prompt-attack subtype (Microsoft Prompt Shields in Azure AI Content Safety).

Those security concepts matter when untrusted text is trying to override application rules or safety limits. They should not be used to label every roleplay reply that invents your action. For a normal character chat, debug the greeting, definition, examples, and history first; investigate prompt injection only when content is attempting to bypass higher-priority safeguards or manipulate the surrounding application.
How should developers protect user agency in a character system?
If you are building the application rather than editing one character, define the intended use and boundaries in trusted instructions and keep unverified user text out of those instructions. Apple’s developer guidance recommends specifying intended use and boundaries and separating unverified input from trusted guidance (Apple: Improving the safety of generative model output).
- Store character definitions and turn-taking rules in a trusted configuration layer.
- Insert user messages as data for the next turn, not as new system-level instructions.
- Label speaker roles consistently and validate that generated text does not claim to be a user message before displaying it.
- Provide an edit, regenerate, and rewind path so a user can remove an unwanted action from context.
- Test adversarial and ambiguous inputs separately from ordinary roleplay; prompt wording alone cannot prevent every failure.
These safeguards reduce role confusion at the application level, but they still require testing against the particular model and context format you deploy.
What should a finished character prompt look like?
A practical setup combines a character-focused greeting, a definition that assigns ownership clearly, and examples that demonstrate an open hand-off.
Role:
{{char}} is a night-shift archivist: observant, concise, and protective of the collection.
Turn-taking:
{{char}} writes only {{char}}'s speech, actions, perceptions, and thoughts.
{{char}} respects {{user}}'s autonomy and does not supply {{user}}'s words, actions, feelings, or decisions.
Each reply ends with room for {{user}} to respond.
Greeting:
{{char}} switches on the reading lamp as {{user}} approaches the archive desk.
"The public collection is closed, but I can answer one question," {{char}} says.
Example:
{{user}}: I place a damaged map on the desk.
{{char}}: {{char}} studies the torn edge. "This was exposed to salt water. Where did you find it?"
Use this as a pattern, not a guaranteed script. The model still interprets the complete context, and different platforms may rename variables or place fields in a different order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the conversation stop the AI from speaking for me?
It can remove earlier messages that reinforced the behavior, but it will not repair a greeting, definition, or example that still teaches the same pattern. Start a new chat after editing the setup so you test the revised instructions rather than old context.
Should I write my own character’s actions in every reply to prevent confusion?
You can write as much or as little as you want; the boundary concerns who decides, not how long your messages are. Short replies are valid, and the character should ask or pause instead of filling in choices you left unstated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can lowering temperature guarantee that the bot will stop controlling my character?
No. Temperature changes sampling variability and may make replies more predictable, but it does not replace a clear role definition and examples. Its range and effect depend on the platform and model.
How can I tell whether a failure comes from the model or my prompt?
Run the same edited character in a fresh conversation and compare several distinct scenarios. If the behavior appears immediately, inspect the setup; if it begins only after a particular exchange, rewind that context and test whether the corrected branch remains stable.
