An AI daemon stays inexpensive with prompt caching only when the reusable beginning of each request remains byte-for-byte stable through the provider’s cache boundary. Put durable system instructions, tool definitions, and any unchanged conversation prefix before that boundary; place timestamps, request IDs, and new user content after it when the API permits. Then confirm reuse with cache-read and cache-write token counters rather than guessing from latency or an invoice.
This is an engineering discipline, not a universal promise. Cache order, matching rules, retention, and prices differ by provider and model. Anthropic’s documented API provides a concrete example: eligible content is processed in the order tools, system, then messages, through an explicit or automatically managed breakpoint. The invariant is the reusable prefix, while the exact implementation belongs to the provider’s API.
Why does an AI daemon sometimes hit the prompt cache and sometimes miss?
A cache miss usually means that the prefix the provider compares has changed, the previous entry expired, or the request no longer reaches an eligible breakpoint. Prompt caching reuses previously processed input segments; it does not mean that your application sends only the latest user turn. The provider still receives the request and decides which prefix can be reused.
Long-running agents are especially sensitive because every turn often repeats the same system policy, tool schemas, and conversation history. A harmless-looking edit—such as adding a timestamp to the system message or regenerating a JSON tool definition with a different key order—can create a different prefix and force a new cache write.

Treat the prefix as an invariant: if two requests are intended to reuse an entry, every cache-relevant byte through the breakpoint must remain identical. New or intentionally changed context belongs after that point, or in a deliberately new session.
What is a prompt-cache invariant?
A prompt-cache invariant is a portion of a request that your application deliberately keeps unchanged so the provider can match it to an existing cached prefix. It is an application-level contract built on top of provider-specific caching behavior.
- Stable material: versioned system instructions, fixed policy text, tool names and schemas, and conversation turns that are not being edited.
- Volatile material: current timestamps, per-request identifiers, random seeds, live sensor values, authentication challenges, and the incoming user turn.
- Boundary: the provider’s explicit cache-control point or automatically selected breakpoint that ends the reusable block.
- Evidence: usage counters showing tokens written to and read from cache.
The invariant is not the same as application storage, a local prompt database, or network compression. It concerns provider-side processing of eligible prompt segments.

How does Anthropic’s documented cache order affect request design?
Anthropic documents a cacheable prompt sequence of tools, then system, then messages. A cache breakpoint covers the eligible content through the marked block, so static content should precede changing content within that sequence.
Anthropic supports explicit breakpoints and automatic breakpoint management for growing multi-turn conversations. Automatic management can reduce manual bookkeeping, but it does not make mutable content safe inside a supposedly stable prefix. Other providers may use different ordering, boundaries, minimum sizes, or retention rules; do not copy this sequence into an unrelated API without checking its documentation.
Compose the stable prefix first
Keep tool definitions deterministic and versioned. Serialize fields in a consistent order, avoid generating descriptions from live data, and deploy a deliberate tool-schema version when a real change is required. Place the durable system policy next, followed by message history that you intend to preserve.

Mark the end of reusable content
Use the provider’s cache-control mechanism at the end of the stable block. If the API offers automatic breakpoints, inspect where it places them and test behavior as the conversation grows. A breakpoint is a boundary, not a guarantee that every token before it will remain cached indefinitely.

Four mutation classes account for many intermittent misses. Investigate them against the request format and matching rules of your chosen provider.
Mutating the system prompt
Appending the current date, deployment identifier, user name, or a feature flag to a system message changes the prefix. Keep durable policy text in the cached block and pass request-specific state in a later message or a provider-supported variable position. When policy genuinely changes, treat that version as a new cache generation rather than expecting the old entry to match.
Changing tool definitions
Adding a tool, changing its parameter schema, reordering properties, or emitting nondeterministic descriptions can invalidate the prefix before the message history is reached. Generate schemas from a pinned definition, sort fields consistently, and change the schema only as an intentional release event.
Rewriting earlier messages
Editing, redacting, or reformatting an old message changes every later request that includes it. If an earlier turn must change, do not pretend the session is still the same cache lineage. Start a fresh session from the corrected history, or create a new summarized context.

Putting nondeterministic data inside the boundary
Random values, rotating timestamps, trace IDs, changing retrieval results, and live status text are poor cache-prefix material. Generate them after the breakpoint whenever the API allows. If a provider requires all content to appear in one ordered structure, isolate volatile fields in the latest segment and measure whether the resulting boundary still covers enough stable tokens to be worthwhile.

What request lifecycle keeps caching predictable?
Use three deliberate operations: append a turn, replace the conversation for a new session, or summarize at a chosen boundary. Each operation makes the cache lineage explicit.
1. Append a new turn
- Load the last accepted conversation state and the same versioned tools and system instructions.
- Append the new user message without editing earlier messages.
- Leave volatile request metadata outside the marked reusable block when supported.
- Send the request and record cache-read and cache-write counters from the response.
Appending preserves the existing prefix until the provider’s retention window expires or the API’s automatic breakpoint policy moves the effective boundary.
2. Replace the whole conversation for a fresh session
When policy, tools, or historical turns change, construct a complete new request and assign it a new session generation. Do not mix corrected history with the old cache assumption. The first request may write a new entry; later identical prefixes can read it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Summarize deliberately
When history becomes too large, summarize it once and begin a new session whose stable prefix contains the summary. Keep the summary deterministic if you want subsequent turns to reuse it. Record the summary version so operators can distinguish an intentional new cache generation from an accidental mutation.
How long does a cached prefix remain available?
Anthropic documents a default five-minute cache lifetime and an optional one-hour lifetime. The clock is measured from the start of the write or read request, so time spent generating the response consumes part of the window. A five-minute setting may therefore expire sooner than five minutes after the user sees the answer.
| Anthropic setting | Documented lifetime | Engineering implication |
|---|---|---|
| Default cache | Five minutes | Suitable for turns that reliably arrive within a short active burst; include generation time when estimating the gap. |
| Extended cache | One hour | Useful for longer idle periods when its higher write charge is justified by repeated reuse. |
Choose a lifetime from observed inter-turn gaps, not from an average alone. A daemon with frequent bursts and occasional long pauses may need separate policies for interactive and background workloads.

Is prompt caching guaranteed to reduce cost?
No. Savings depend on prefix size, repetition frequency, idle gaps, TTL, model rates, and the number of requests that actually read the cache. Anthropic’s pricing documentation describes five-minute cache writes at 1.25 times base input pricing, one-hour writes at 2 times base input pricing, and cache hits at a model-specific fraction of base input pricing. Verify the current rate for the exact model and region before calculating dollars.

| Charge category | What it represents | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Base input | Uncached input tokens | The cost of sending the same prefix without reuse. |
| Five-minute cache write | Tokens inserted into a five-minute cache entry | The one-time write premium versus the number of expected reads. |
| One-hour cache write | Tokens inserted into an hour-long entry | The higher write premium versus the longer gap it can cover. |
| Cache read | Tokens served from an existing entry | The model-specific read rate and the number of tokens read. |
A stable prefix alone proves nothing about net savings. Multiply observed token counts by current base, write, and read rates, then compare that total with an uncached baseline for the same request cadence. A secondary DCYFR Labs article published September 15, 2026, describes “roughly 10% of the input cost” and “about 3x faster” as estimates; those figures are workload- and provider-dependent, not universal statistics.
How can I track the effectiveness of my caching strategy?
Use provider telemetry for every representative request. Anthropic exposes separate usage fields for input tokens written to cache and input tokens read from cache, allowing you to distinguish a write, a hit, and uncached input.
- Capture usage fields: store
cache_creation_input_tokensandcache_read_input_tokensalongside total input tokens, model, TTL, session generation, and timestamp. - Classify each request: label it as a cache write, cache read, partial reuse, or no eligible cache event according to the provider’s response.
- Measure realistic gaps: include rapid turns, idle periods, response-generation time, and conversations that grow until automatic breakpoint management changes the prefix.
- Calculate a baseline: estimate what the same token volume would cost at the current uncached input rate.
- Review by workload: compare hit rate, reused tokens, write premiums, and estimated savings for interactive, scheduled, and failure-retry traffic separately.
Do not infer a hit from perceived latency. Network conditions, model load, output length, and queueing can change response time even when cache usage is identical. An invoice estimate can also hide whether a request paid a write premium or received a read discount.

Use explicit placement when you know exactly which stable block should be reused and want a reviewable contract. Use automatic management when the provider documents it for your conversation pattern and you prefer less manual handling as history grows.

What should I check when cache reads unexpectedly fall to zero?
- Compare serialized requests: diff the exact tool, system, and message bytes around the breakpoint, not just the source objects.
- Check ordering: confirm that tools, policy, and messages appear in the provider’s required order.
- Look for hidden volatility: inspect timestamps, UUIDs, random values, retrieval snippets, localization, whitespace, and JSON key ordering.
- Check the clock: include response-generation time and idle gaps when comparing requests with the documented TTL.
- Verify eligibility: confirm that the prefix meets the provider’s minimum size and supported-content rules.
- Separate intentional resets: identify deployments, tool-schema releases, redactions, and summaries that created a new session generation.
- Read usage fields: distinguish a true miss from a partial read or a request whose cache entry was never written.
If a change is intentional, label it as a new cache generation rather than trying to preserve an obsolete entry. This keeps operational alerts focused on accidental mutations.
What is the practical invariant checklist?
- Version and deterministically serialize tool definitions.
- Keep durable system instructions unchanged through the breakpoint.
- Append turns instead of rewriting earlier messages.
- Place timestamps, IDs, and live data after the reusable boundary when supported.
- Start a new session after policy, tool, or historical-context changes.
- Summarize once at a deliberate boundary when history must be compressed.
- Choose five-minute or one-hour retention from measured request gaps.
- Record cache-creation and cache-read token counters for representative sessions.
- Recalculate costs with the current model’s base, write, and read rates.
- Treat provider documentation as authoritative for order, matching, eligibility, and retention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does prompt caching stop my application from retransmitting the full conversation?
No. Your application generally continues sending the request structure it needs, while the provider may reuse processing for an eligible prefix. Caching reduces repeated provider-side input work and cost; it is not a transport-compression protocol.
Can I cache a user’s private data indefinitely?
Retention is controlled by the provider’s documented cache lifetime and eligibility rules, not by your application’s session label. Avoid placing data with stricter privacy or deletion requirements in a reusable block unless your provider’s terms and controls meet those requirements.
What happens if two daemons use the same system prompt?
They may reuse an entry only if the provider’s cache scope, authentication context, and matching rules allow it. Do not assume that identical text creates a shared cache across accounts, regions, models, or API keys; verify the provider’s scope and inspect usage telemetry.
Is a longer cached prefix always better?
Not necessarily. A larger prefix can yield more reused tokens, but it also costs more to write and is more likely to contain a volatile field that causes misses. Measure the stable-token volume, mutation rate, request cadence, and current write/read prices together.
