Use two separate boundaries whenever you ask an AI video editor to change footage: a temporal boundary that contains the operation to the intended seconds, and a spatial boundary that contains it to the chosen subject or pixels. Blade-cut or range-select the timeline, then apply a tracked mask or isolated adjustment. Work above a locked duplicate of the source, inspect the complete shot frame by frame, and keep the result as a new clip or layer until it passes review. This prevents most whole-clip edits, while accounting for the fact that AI masks are approximations that can drift or include a small perimeter.
Why did the AI change parts of my clip I didn’t select?
AI editors infer a result from surrounding frames and image context rather than treating your click as a hard pixel-level command. If the selected time range is longer than intended, the tool may process every frame in that range. If no spatial mask is supplied, many operations are effectively global. Even with a mask, tracking can expand, drift, or include nearby pixels so the model can maintain a believable edge.
Temporal and spatial selection solve different problems. A timeline range says when an operation may run; a mask says where it may affect pixels. A subject-only selection without a short range can still alter the subject throughout an entire shot. A short range without a mask can still change the whole image during those seconds. Use both boundaries whenever the editor supports them.

Runway’s Inpainting documentation says its current tool dilates a masked selection by 10 px, so a nominal outline can affect a narrow perimeter around it. Hair, motion blur, reflections, shadows, transparent fabric, and soft focus make the boundary even less certain. Treat the first AI result as a draft that requires a full-shot inspection, not as a guaranteed selection lock.

What is the safest workflow for protecting unselected content?
The reliable pattern is to preserve the source, isolate the time range, isolate the image area, refine the boundary, and commit only after review.
- Create a protected source. Duplicate the source clip or sequence. Label the duplicate clearly, place it on its own track, and lock that track. Make the AI operation on a new adjustment layer, generated-media layer, node, or duplicate clip so the untouched media remains available.
- Constrain the time. Blade-cut immediately before and after the intended section, or drag a range in an editor that supports range selection. Leave neighboring segments outside the generated or masked operation. A short isolated segment is easier to track and easier to replace if the result fails.
- Constrain the space. Select the person, object, or surface with the editor’s object-selection tool, rectangle, lasso, or paint mask. Use add and subtract controls until the selection covers only the intended target. Invert the mask when the background, rather than the subject, is the target.
- Track and refine. Track the mask through the shot, then inspect hair, fast limbs, motion-blurred edges, reflections, and shadows. Contract or expand the mask, feather it, adjust edge sharpness, and add manual corrections where tracking loses the subject.
- Use a manageable shot. Trim long footage into shorter shots before inpainting or heavy generative work. Extreme camera movement, low contrast, rapid entrances or exits, full-frame occlusion, large files, and very long clips are common causes of artifacts or failed exports.
- Review every frame of the complete shot. Play from the first frame through the last, not only the frame used to create the mask. Look at the protected background as well as the intended subject. Add keyframes wherever the subject changes scale, crosses a similar object, or leaves and re-enters the frame.
- Commit reversibly. Save the generated result as a new clip or layer. Do not overwrite the source. If protected content changes, delete or disable the generated layer, regenerate only the isolated segment, or restore the original.
How do I isolate the exact seconds an AI tool may edit?
Place hard edit points around the intended action before invoking AI. In a timeline editor, move the playhead to the first frame, blade-cut, move to the last frame, and blade-cut again. Select only the middle segment for generation or masking. If the tool has a range control instead of cuts, drag across the desired timeline range and verify that the highlighted in and out points exclude adjacent frames.
Premiere’s Generative Media Tool explicitly uses a timeline range: drag across the timeline to select where media should be generated, enter a prompt, choose a model, and review the generated media as an editable clip. Keep the original neighboring clips on the locked source track. If the generated media needs a longer context for continuity, process a duplicate of the shot and replace only the selected range after checking its handles.
Do not confuse range-based generation with edge extension. Premiere’s Generative Extend adds frames only to the beginning or end of a clip, rather than rewriting an arbitrary interior section. Adobe states that the original clip remains unchanged, and the feature can generate up to two seconds of video extension. Generated frames can be reverted to the original media before you accept the result.
How can I keep an AI effect on one object in Premiere Pro?
Use Object Mask to isolate the subject, then apply the effect to the masked region on a separate layer or adjustment. Object Mask is designed to identify and track people or objects so a correction can be limited to the selection instead of affecting the whole frame.
Select the subject
In the Object Mask controls, hover and click the subject for automatic selection, or draw a rectangle or lasso around it. Use the add controls to include missed portions and subtract controls to remove background pixels. The selection should be slightly conservative at first; missed pixels can be added after tracking, while a broad mask can contaminate the background.
Track and control the edge
Run the mask tracker through the shot and inspect forward and backward from the starting frame. Use mask expansion to recover missed subject pixels or contract the selection when the background is included. Adobe documents negative expansion for contracting a mask and positive expansion for recovering missed pixels. Feathering can hide a hard cut, but too much feathering mixes the correction into nearby background, so check the result at full resolution.

Keep mask data portable
Premiere stores Object Mask data in a project-adjacent folder. If that folder is missing, masks can go offline even though the media itself is present. Move or archive the mask folder with the project when transferring it to another workstation, and relink it if a project opens without its tracked masks.

How do I stop generative fill or inpainting from changing the background?
Paint a mask that encloses the object to be replaced or repaired, then verify whether the tool interprets the mask as “edit inside” or “protect inside.” If the desired operation is on the background, invert the subject mask so the background is the active region. Keep a small, intentional margin around the target only when the model needs room to synthesize a believable edge; otherwise contract the mask to reduce spill.
Play the entire shot after the first pass. Runway’s Inpainting guidance specifically recommends playing the full clip, painting close to the subject outline, and creating more keyframes as necessary when the mask needs correction. Because the current tool dilates masked selections by 10 px, inspect a perimeter around the painted area for color shifts, texture replacement, or altered shadows.
When an object is temporarily hidden, do not assume the previous mask remains valid. Add a keyframe before the occlusion, another when the object reappears, and correct the outline at each transition. If the model must invent a fully occluded person, limb, or background, shorten the request or split the shot; those cases are more likely to produce artifacts than a partially visible, high-contrast subject.
What is the current Runway workflow for contained edits?
Runway’s current Edit Studio presents a frame timeline and a selected range. Start with a single edit from a chosen keyframe when you want to approve the look before propagating it through the shot. For inpainting, paint the mask, preview the entire clip, and add keyframes wherever the outline changes.
Reduce common Runway failure conditions
- Trim long footage into shorter shots rather than sending a very long clip at once.
- Reduce extreme camera or subject motion when possible; stabilize or choose a calmer take before masking.
- Improve contrast between the target and its surroundings so tracking has a separable edge.
- Correct rapid entrances, exits, and full-frame occlusions with additional keyframes or separate segments.
- Do not ask the model to reconstruct large, fully hidden scenery or anatomy when a cutaway or clean plate can solve the shot more reliably.
The former Runway video project editor was retired on July 30, 2026. Use the current Timeline Studio and Edit Studio names when following up-to-date instructions; older tutorials that refer to the retired project editor may show controls that no longer exist.
How do I limit an AI correction with DaVinci Resolve Magic Mask?
In DaVinci Resolve Studio, Magic Mask uses the DaVinci AI Neural Engine to identify and track human figures, physical features, objects, and surfaces from clicks in the viewer. Start the selection on the Color page, then use paint strokes to add or remove areas and the matte-finesse controls to clean the result.
Put the isolated correction on a separate node instead of altering the main grade node. This keeps the original node chain available and lets you disable, adjust, or replace the AI correction without rebuilding the grade. Track through the shot, inspect frames where the subject changes pose or overlaps a similar object, and correct the matte at those points before rendering.
How should I compare AI video tools for selection safety?
The important comparison is not which tool has the most impressive demo, but how precisely it limits time and space, how easily you can correct tracking, and how safely you can undo the result.

What should I do when the mask spills onto the background?
First identify whether the spill is spatial, temporal, or both. Pause on a frame that shows the error, inspect the mask overlay, and then apply the matching fix.
Selection spill at an edge
Contract mask expansion, tighten the outline, add subtract strokes, and check motion-blurred frames. If a shadow or reflection is being selected unintentionally, remove it unless the effect genuinely needs to follow that surface. A small feather is usually safer than a large one because broad feathering blends the correction into protected pixels.

Temporal drift
Add keyframes where the subject changes scale, crosses a similar object, or exits and re-enters the frame. Review forward and backward from every correction; a keyframe that looks correct in one direction can still allow the tracker to drift in the other.
The whole clip changed
Undo or disable the generated result, restore the locked duplicate, and blade-cut the intended range. Reapply the AI operation only to the isolated segment, then place the accepted result above the untouched media.
Premiere masks are offline
Restore or relink the project-adjacent mask folder. When moving or archiving the project, copy that folder with the project file and media so the tracked mask data remains available.
The generated result is simply wrong
Do not overwrite the source while troubleshooting. Regenerate from the isolated segment with a tighter mask or a corrected keyframe, or revert to the original media and use a conventional edit, clean plate, or cutaway for that moment.

How can I make AI tracking more predictable before I start?
- Choose footage with clear contrast between the target and background.
- Split a long take at natural shot changes, major occlusions, or abrupt camera moves.
- Start the mask on a frame where the subject is fully visible and its outline is easy to paint.
- Keep the mask close to the intended object; expand only when the effect needs a soft or moving boundary.
- Save a versioned project before generation so a failed experiment cannot overwrite a working edit.
- Preview at full resolution and normal playback speed, then step through difficult frames individually.
- Archive generated clips, masks, and project-adjacent data together so a future revision can reproduce the edit.
Can I lock the rest of the clip while AI edits one section?
You can lock the untouched source track, but locking is a rollback safeguard rather than a substitute for a time range and mask. The AI operation still needs to run on a duplicate, isolated segment or new layer; afterward, compare it against the locked source before replacing anything.
Rank #4
Why do hair, smoke, and reflections keep changing outside my mask?
Those features have semi-transparent or rapidly changing boundaries, so the model may include nearby pixels to maintain temporal continuity. Use a tighter mask, add corrections at the frames where the feature changes, and accept that a conventional composite or clean plate may be more reliable for highly translucent detail.
Does selecting one frame approve the whole AI edit?
No. A starting frame establishes the initial look or mask, but tracking and generation can diverge later as scale, lighting, occlusion, or motion changes. Always review the complete shot and add corrections at the points where the subject or camera behavior changes.
What happens if I move a Premiere project to another computer?
Tracked Object Mask data can go offline if the project-adjacent mask folder is left behind. Copy that folder with the project and media, then relink it if Premiere opens the sequence without the mask data.
