Make the brief more specific, give the model details that belong to your project, show examples of the quality you want, and revise the first batch instead of accepting it as final. AI-generated ideas tend to sound generic when the prompt leaves the audience, situation, goal, or standard of success open to interpretation. A useful prompt narrows those choices while leaving room for unexpected angles.

The goal is not to make a prompt longer for its own sake. It is to give the model enough relevant context to produce ideas that could not be dropped unchanged into almost any other project.

Why do AI-generated ideas sound so generic?

A prompt such as “Give me ideas about productivity” names a broad subject but not a particular reader, problem, setting, or purpose. With few boundaries to work within, the model can return familiar patterns that fit the topic in general but do not fit your project in particular.

The same thing happens when a request uses vague quality words such as “creative,” “engaging,” or “original” without explaining what those qualities look like. Those words express a preference, but they do not tell the model which audience to reach, which details to use, or which common approaches to avoid.

Other causes include leaving out relevant source material, asking for an unspecified format, and stopping after the first response. The first batch is a starting point: it gives you material to evaluate and helps reveal which parts of the brief need to be sharper.

What generic output looks like

  • Ideas that could suit almost any audience, company, or person.
  • Several suggestions that use different wording but share the same underlying angle.
  • Claims or details that were not supplied and cannot be supported.
  • Advice with no setting, human tension, or concrete next step.
  • Ideas that sound polished but do not help the reader make a decision or do something specific.

How do I make my prompt more specific?

Turn the broad request into a compact design brief. State who the idea is for, the situation they are in, what you want the idea to accomplish, and what constraints it must respect. Then define what a successful idea contains.

OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends identifying the task, supplying context, and specifying tone. Its Help Center also advises using clear, specific prompts with enough context. These are practical instructions, not a promise that any prompt will produce original ideas on its first try.

Include the decisions that shape the answer

  • Audience: Who will read, use, or act on the idea? Replace “small businesses” with a more situated description, such as “owners of neighborhood repair shops who handle bookings themselves.”
  • Situation: What is happening for that audience right now? Include the moment, obstacle, or decision that makes the idea relevant.
  • Objective: What should the idea help the audience understand, choose, or do?
  • Available material: What facts, experience, examples, or source material can the idea draw on?
  • Constraints: What should it avoid? Consider unsupported claims, unavailable resources, overused angles, or a tone that would not suit the audience.
  • Success test: What would make an idea useful enough to keep? For example, it might name a real tension, use a project fact, and suggest a concrete action.

Specificity means choosing relevant boundaries, not filling the prompt with every fact you know. Irrelevant context can distract from the task. If you are unsure which details matter, tell the model which details to prioritize and ask it to label assumptions rather than silently filling gaps.

Before and after: a productivity brief

Broad request: “Give me blog ideas about productivity.”

More useful brief: “Suggest ideas for people who run neighborhood repair shops and handle customer bookings themselves. The goal is to help them decide what small process to improve before the next busy week. Use the booking problems and customer comments in the notes below. Avoid generic time-management advice and claims the notes do not support. Each idea should identify a specific situation, the tension for the owner, and one practical next step.”

The revised prompt does not guarantee a surprising result. It does give the model a defined audience, purpose, evidence boundary, and shape for each suggestion—specific instructions that are easier to follow than “be creative.”

What project details should I give the model?

Give it material that makes this project different from a generic version of the same topic. Grounding context might include source material, audience language, product limitations, a location, an incident, a character, or an unusual combination of facts. Microsoft’s prompting guidance emphasizes providing grounding context and descriptive instructions; OpenAI’s API guidance likewise recommends adding relevant context.

Use details that are both distinctive and relevant. A pile of background information is not automatically useful: tell the model how to use the material and what it must not infer from it.

Useful kinds of grounding material

  • Audience language: Phrases people actually use to describe their situation, concern, or decision.
  • Project facts: Features, limitations, events, observations, or constraints that are specific to the work.
  • Source material: Notes, research, interviews, or documents that ideas should draw on.
  • Context: A place, time, role, or circumstance that changes what an idea would mean.
  • Boundaries: Details the output must not assume, exaggerate, or invent.

For example, instead of asking for “campaign ideas for a local event,” provide the event’s purpose, who typically attends, what changed this time, what organizers can actually offer, and any audience comments you are allowed to use. Ask the model to base suggestions on those facts and label any assumption that goes beyond them.

Grounding is not the same as asking the model to treat every supplied statement as verified. If a detail is uncertain, say so. If an idea depends on a fact that is missing, require the model to flag that dependency instead of presenting it as established.

How can examples make the ideas less interchangeable?

Examples show what abstract instructions mean in practice: the desired tone, amount of detail, format, and range of angles. Google recommends using specific and varied few-shot examples to help a model narrow its focus. The Government of British Columbia also describes one-shot and multi-shot prompts as ways to steer tone, format, logic, and edge cases.

Use a small set of examples that teaches the standard without dictating every answer. Two to five examples can be enough to demonstrate the pattern; the important point is what each example communicates, not reaching a particular count.

Build examples that teach more than one thing

  • Show a strong example that has a clear audience, a concrete situation, and a useful angle.
  • Show a weak generic example and state what is missing, such as a specific setting or meaningful tension.
  • Vary the strong examples’ angles so the model does not simply repeat one idea in new words.
  • Keep the requested format consistent so the model can distinguish differences in substance from differences in presentation.

Label why each example succeeds or fails. If you provide a good idea without explaining what makes it good, the model may imitate its surface details rather than the qualities you wanted. Conversely, if every example uses the same angle, you may unintentionally steer the whole batch toward that angle.

Examples should be relevant to the current task. A polished sample from a different audience or purpose may teach the wrong tone or level of detail. If the examples are only meant to show formatting, say so explicitly and ask the model not to copy their subject matter.

How should I structure the output?

Ask for a fixed number of ideas and require the same useful fields for each one. A consistent structure makes it easier to compare suggestions and spot interchangeable filler. Microsoft’s guidance recommends clear syntax and breaking work into manageable parts; OpenAI’s API guidance also recommends relevant context and clear instructions.

Choose fields that expose whether each idea has a real point of view. For an editorial brainstorm, those could include the audience, situation, tension, a concrete detail, why the idea matters now, and an execution note. For another kind of project, choose fields that match the decisions the reader or team will need to make.

A prompt template you can adapt

Generate eight ideas for [audience] in [specific situation] to achieve [objective]. Use these project facts: [facts]. Avoid [clichés, assumptions, and overused angles]. Each idea must include: a concrete setting, the human tension, one unusual detail from the facts, why it matters now, and a one-sentence execution note. First list repeated or generic patterns you will avoid; then draft the ideas; finally rank them by distinctiveness and explain the ranking.

Replace each bracketed field with real project information before using the template. Change the required fields if they do not fit your work. The fixed count and format help make answers comparable; they do not make a weak brief specific by themselves.

Requiring a reason for a ranking can expose whether the model is distinguishing ideas by substance or merely presenting a confident order. Treat the ranking as an aid to review, not an objective measure of originality: the distinctiveness test still depends on your project and audience.

How do I improve the first batch instead of asking for “more creative” ideas?

Run the work as an iterative loop: generate, inspect, diagnose, and then request a targeted revision. OpenAI recommends breaking complex work into focused prompts and refining results through follow-up turns. Its guidance also describes prompt engineering as iterative, rather than a one-shot exercise.

  1. Generate a first batch. Use the brief, grounding material, examples, and output fields to get a set you can assess.
  2. Identify what is weak. Look for clichés, abstractions, repeated angles, unsupported details, and missing specifics.
  3. Ask for diagnosis before replacement. Have the model mark which suggestions fail and explain the pattern. This gives you a more useful revision target than a general request for better ideas.
  4. Choose what needs to change. Add a missing project fact, sharpen the audience or situation, provide a more useful example, or narrow a constraint. Avoid changing everything at once if you want to see which change helps.
  5. Request a new set with a changed angle. Say what the next batch should explore and what the previous batch overused. Ask for a genuinely different approach, not adjective swaps.
  6. Check the revised ideas against the same standard. Keep the useful fields consistent so you can compare the second batch with the first.

A targeted follow-up might say: “Flag any idea that could fit almost any business, repeats another angle, or relies on a fact I did not provide. Then replace only the weak ideas. For replacements, use the customer comments about missed appointments and explore operational trade-offs rather than time-management tips.” This gives the model a specific revision job and a reason to change direction.

If the second set remains bland, do not keep repeating “make it more original.” Revisit the inputs. The audience may still be too broad, the project facts may not differentiate the work, the examples may all point in one direction, or the output fields may reward surface polish instead of useful substance.

How do I judge whether an idea is genuinely specific?

Use a human originality test before keeping an idea. Retain it only if a reader can identify its audience, situation, tension, and concrete next step. Delete or revise ideas that could fit almost any brand, industry, or person. This is a practical editorial test derived from the emphasis on specificity, context, and evaluation in OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft guidance—not a published originality metric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Audience: Can you tell who this is for without relying on a broad label?
  • Situation: Does it describe a circumstance that changes the idea, rather than just naming a topic?
  • Tension: Is there a conflict, obstacle, choice, or unmet need that gives the idea a reason to exist?
  • Concrete detail: Does the idea use a relevant project fact, or could that detail be swapped for one from any other project?
  • Next step: Can someone see what the idea would become or what the audience could do with it?

Check support as well as specificity. An idea can be vivid and still depend on an invented claim. Separate what your material establishes from what the model has assumed, and remove or verify claims that the project facts do not support.

You do not need to keep the model’s phrasing. If an idea contains a useful angle but the wording sounds familiar, retain the angle and rewrite it in language that suits the audience and the material. The model can help you explore possibilities; the final choice about relevance and fit belongs to the person responsible for the work.

Which prompting approach should I use?

Assess your approach on five practical dimensions: how specific the brief is, how useful and varied the examples are, how relevant the grounding material is, how clear the output structure is, and whether the process includes critique and revision. These dimensions bring together recurring recommendations in OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft guidance.

  • Brief specificity: Does the model know the audience, setting, objective, constraints, and success test?
  • Example quality: Do the examples demonstrate both the desired standard and useful variation?
  • Grounding: Are the supplied facts relevant, distinctive, and clearly separated from assumptions?
  • Output structure: Can you compare each idea on the qualities that matter?
  • Revision discipline: Is there a planned critique and a follow-up that changes the weak parts?

When results feel generic, inspect these dimensions instead of assuming that the model simply needs a more forceful creativity instruction. Strengthen the weakest part of the process: a clearer situation, a more informative example, better project context, a more revealing output format, or a more precise revision request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I avoid when prompting for original ideas?

A prompt can be detailed and still steer toward bland or unreliable output if it rewards the wrong things. Avoid instructions that sound ambitious but do not define a standard, examples that all point toward the same answer, and requests that give the model permission to fill factual gaps.

  • Do not rely on “be creative” alone. Explain what kind of difference matters: a less familiar angle, a specific setting, or a connection to a particular project fact.
  • Do not confuse volume with usefulness. A large batch can contain more repeated angles. Ask for a manageable set with comparable fields and then refine what is weak.
  • Do not reward confident invention. State which materials are authoritative and ask the model to label assumptions or flag missing facts.
  • Do not give examples without explaining them. Tell the model whether each example demonstrates tone, structure, specificity, or a boundary.
  • Do not treat ranking as proof. A ranking is a prompt for discussion, not evidence that an idea will work with a real audience.
  • Do not accept decorative specificity. An unusual detail is useful only if it connects to the audience, situation, or purpose.

These checks keep the task focused on ideas that are both distinctive and usable, rather than merely surprising on the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many examples should I include in an AI prompt?

There is no universal best count. A few examples can demonstrate a standard and a range of angles, but add more only when they teach something new; redundant examples can make the intended variation less clear.

Can I use the same prompt template for different projects?

You can reuse its structure, but replace the audience, situation, project facts, constraints, and success test each time. A template that keeps generic inputs will tend to produce generic results again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I ask the model to rank its ideas?

A ranking can help start a review, especially when you ask for reasons tied to your criteria. It should not substitute for checking whether an idea fits the audience or whether its factual assumptions are supported.
