Run an AI agent that can generate or execute untrusted code in a disposable sandbox, not directly on your workstation or production host. For low-risk, trusted jobs, a hardened container may be sufficient. For code supplied by users, agents that can reach secrets, browser automation, kernel features, or multi-tenant services, use gVisor or a microVM/virtual machine with its own guest kernel. Whichever runtime you select, layer deny-by-default networking, minimal filesystem sharing, short-lived credentials, dropped Linux capabilities, mandatory access controls, resource limits, logging, and automatic teardown.
Ordinary containers isolate processes with namespaces and cgroups but still share the host kernel. A kernel or runtime flaw can therefore turn a container escape into a host compromise. gVisor inserts a userspace application kernel, while a microVM or VM adds a separate guest kernel behind a hypervisor. The right choice depends on the agent’s data access, required system features, tenant model, and the damage a compromise could cause.
Why must AI-generated code be isolated?
An agent can produce shell commands, install packages, compile native code, run build hooks, alter configuration, and make network requests without the predictable behavior of a hand-written application. A prompt-injection attack can also persuade an otherwise helpful agent to read files, search environment variables, or send data to an attacker-controlled endpoint. Google Cloud specifically identifies “AI agents that generate and execute code, often without supervision” as a workload requiring stronger isolation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe security question is not whether the generated program looks harmless. It is whether the program can reach anything valuable if the model is wrong, the prompt is malicious, a dependency is compromised, or the runtime has a vulnerability. Treat code, packages, repositories, browser content, and tool output as untrusted inputs.

- Persistence: a modified Git hook, CI file, build script, or IDE task can execute later outside the sandbox.
- Resource abuse: fork bombs, unbounded compilation, disk filling, cryptomining, and runaway network traffic can affect the host or neighbors.
Isolation reduces blast radius; it does not make an agent trustworthy. Human review of generated changes and an approval workflow remain separate controls.
What is the difference between a container, gVisor, and a microVM?
The key distinction is where the kernel boundary sits. Containers use the host kernel, gVisor supplies a userspace Linux-like application kernel, and a microVM or VM boots a separate guest kernel behind a hypervisor.
| Runtime | Boundary | Best fit | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary container (Docker or containerd) | Namespaces and cgroups on the shared host kernel | Trusted workloads and lower-risk generated code where speed and compatibility dominate | A kernel or runtime escape can affect the host; network and device controls are often coarse unless you add policy |
| gVisor | Userspace application kernel plus host defense-in-depth | Untrusted code that benefits from OCI, Docker, or Kubernetes workflows | Some syscalls and applications are incompatible; there is performance overhead and accelerator support varies |
| MicroVM or VM (for example, Firecracker or Kata-based technology) | Hypervisor with a separate guest kernel | High-risk code, browser or system-level behavior, and multi-tenant services where compromise impact is unacceptable | More startup time and memory overhead; hardware and nested-virtualization constraints can apply |
GKE documentation reports provider-specific startup figures of less than 200 ms for gVisor and approximately one to two seconds for microVM sandbox technologies. Those numbers are not universal benchmarks: image size, node load, storage, snapshotting, and orchestration settings can change them substantially.

How do I choose the isolation strength?
Classify the workload before selecting a runtime. Escalate to a stronger boundary whenever the answer increases potential impact.
Use a hardened container for lower-risk jobs
A normal container can be reasonable when the code is generated for a trusted internal repository, has no secrets, receives no untrusted files, uses a read-only workspace, and runs on a dedicated or well-controlled host. It is a process boundary, not a separate-kernel boundary, so keep the host patched and avoid treating it as adequate for hostile multi-tenant code.
Use gVisor when you need OCI ergonomics with a stronger syscall boundary
gVisor is an open-source workload-isolation system designed to run untrusted code, containers, and applications. It interposes a userspace application kernel while preserving familiar container and Kubernetes workflows. Choose it when ordinary container compatibility is important but direct exposure to the host kernel is too risky. Test native extensions, unusual syscalls, profilers, debuggers, and device access before production.
Use a microVM or VM for the highest-risk agents
A microVM or conventional VM is the default for user-submitted programs, agents with browser or operating-system control, workloads that process sensitive data from multiple tenants, or any service where a host compromise would be unacceptable. Docker’s sandbox security model describes the microVM as the primary trust boundary; each agent receives a lightweight VM rather than only a process namespace. A separate guest kernel improves tenant separation, but the hypervisor, virtual devices, image supply chain, and management plane still need hardening.

How do I build an isolated execution path?
Implement the controls in this order. Each layer assumes another layer could fail.
1. Classify code, data, and required capabilities
Record whether the agent can execute arbitrary shell code, install software, access a browser, compile native binaries, read user uploads, call internal services, or handle credentials. Identify the maximum acceptable loss: a disposable build directory is different from a production database token. Define the allowed operating-system features before deployment instead of discovering them through failed jobs.
2. Select the runtime and host placement
Run low-risk trusted jobs in a restricted container, untrusted but container-shaped jobs in gVisor, and high-impact or multi-tenant jobs in a microVM or VM. Place high-risk sandboxes on a dedicated node pool or separate host so a failure cannot immediately reach unrelated workloads. Keep the sandbox control plane separate from the agent’s writeable filesystem.
3. Remove host reachability
- Do not use host networking; it bypasses the network namespace and makes local services easier to reach.
- Reject privileged containers and block hostPath mounts.
- Never expose the container or VM manager socket, device nodes, or host process namespaces.
- Use a dedicated service account with no administrative role.
- Keep the host and sandbox images patched, signed, and minimal.
A stronger runtime cannot compensate for a host directory or management socket that grants direct control.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Make outbound network access deny-by-default
Start with no egress and add only the package registries, model APIs, source repositories, and application endpoints the task genuinely needs. Enforce this with Kubernetes NetworkPolicy, a VM firewall, or an egress proxy that can apply identity and destination rules. Route requests through a policy-aware proxy when you need logging, domain allowlists, rate limits, or credential injection.
Account for less-obvious exfiltration paths. DNS queries can carry data, cloud metadata endpoints can reveal temporary credentials, and broad access to internal cloud APIs can be as dangerous as an open TCP connection. Permit DNS only through a controlled resolver, block metadata services unless a documented task requires them, and monitor rejected as well as accepted connections.
5. Minimize files and credentials
The safest workspace is mountless. If the agent must edit a repository, prefer a disposable clone or a read-only source mount and copy approved results out through an explicit export step. A direct read-write workspace can change Git hooks, CI configuration, IDE tasks, build files, and dependency manifests that execute later on a developer machine or CI runner.

Never mount a host home directory, SSH private keys, cloud credential files, a Docker socket, or an administrator’s Kubernetes configuration. Inject only short-lived, least-privilege credentials, ideally through a proxy that prevents the agent from seeing the raw secret. Scope tokens to one repository, endpoint, operation, and time window; revoke them when the task ends. Remember that a sandbox does not protect a credential you deliberately place inside it.
6. Apply process and kernel hardening
- Run as a non-root user with a fixed, nonzero UID.
- Drop every Linux capability that the task does not explicitly require.
- Enforce a restrictive seccomp profile and add AppArmor or SELinux policy where supported.
- Use a read-only root filesystem; provide a small, size-limited temporary directory for required writes.
- Disable privilege escalation and set a restrictive umask.
- Limit the number of processes, open files, threads, CPU, memory, and wall-clock time.
- Remove compilers, package managers, shells, and debugging tools when the workload does not need them.
These controls reduce the impact of a malicious process and make denial-of-service behavior easier to contain. Validate them against the actual toolchain; an over-restrictive profile can fail builds, but a permissive profile should be an explicit exception rather than the default.
7. Control storage, persistence, and teardown
Give every task a unique, disposable workspace with a hard disk quota. Reset to a clean image or snapshot after each run, expire artifacts, and destroy temporary credentials at the same time. Keep audit logs outside the agent’s writeable volume so a compromised process cannot erase its trail. Export only reviewed outputs, such as a patch or test report, rather than the entire mutable filesystem.
For long-running agents, rotate the sandbox periodically and set an upper bound on lifetime. A reset removes persistence that a single task could otherwise carry into the next task.
8. Observe and test the boundary
Record process starts, file opens, capability changes, policy decisions, DNS requests, outbound connections, image digests, and sandbox lifecycle events. Alert on attempts to access metadata services, host mounts, kernel interfaces, credential paths, or blocked destinations.
Exercise escape, privilege-escalation, data-exfiltration, fork-bomb, disk-filling, and teardown scenarios in a dedicated test environment. A successful functional test proves only that the agent can complete its intended task; it does not prove that the boundary resists hostile code. Re-test after changing the kernel, runtime, sandbox profile, base image, or network policy.
How should Kubernetes deployments enforce these controls?
Use a dedicated runtime class for gVisor or a microVM technology, then combine it with admission policy and network policy. Admission rules should reject privileged pods, host networking, hostPath volumes, host PID or IPC namespaces, added capabilities, and service-account tokens unless a reviewed exception exists.

Set explicit resource requests and limits, a process-count limit, a read-only root filesystem, and a non-root security context. Apply a default-deny ingress and egress policy in the sandbox namespace, then add narrow rules for the proxy, resolver, registries, and required APIs. Keep the runtime class, node selector, service account, image policy, and egress policy under version control so a review covers the complete execution path.
For high-risk workloads, isolate the namespace on a dedicated node pool and restrict which controllers can schedule there. Do not assume that a runtime class alone configures credentials, storage, or network access; those are separate controls.

“It is in a container, so it is safe.”
A container shares the host kernel. Treating it as a VM can lead to unsafe mounts, capabilities, and device exposure. Use gVisor or a microVM when the code is genuinely hostile, and harden containers even for lower-risk tasks.
Read-write repository mounts
Agents can alter hooks, build scripts, CI definitions, and editor tasks that execute after the sandbox exits. Use clone or mountless mode, export a patch, and review generated files before running them elsewhere.
Broad network allowlists
Allowing an entire cloud network, all HTTPS destinations, or unrestricted DNS creates an exfiltration channel. Start with explicit destinations and inspect both DNS and application-layer traffic.
Secrets in environment variables
Processes, crash reports, debug output, and generated logs can reveal environment variables. Prefer a short-lived proxy credential and prevent the agent from reading the underlying token.
Privileged debugging exceptions
Temporary requests for host networking, extra capabilities, or a Docker socket often become permanent. Use a separate, disposable troubleshooting environment and remove the exception before production.

Confusing approval prompts with isolation
An approval dialog can stop a user from accepting a command, but it does not enforce an operating-system boundary against code that runs automatically. Use approvals as a workflow control alongside sandboxing, not as a substitute for it.
How do I troubleshoot a sandbox that is too restrictive?
When a task fails, identify the denied operation instead of switching the whole sandbox to privileged mode.
- Check runtime and admission events for the exact syscall, capability, mount, or policy denial.
- Determine whether the operation is essential or merely a convenience, such as a debugger, package post-install hook, or telemetry call.
- Prefer a narrower exception: one syscall, one destination, one read-only path, or one short-lived capability.
- Retest with the same image digest and policy in a disposable environment.
- Document the exception, its owner, expiry date, and compensating controls.
gVisor can expose compatibility gaps because applications expect kernel behavior it intentionally does not provide. A microVM may fail because nested virtualization or a required accelerator is unavailable. In either case, moving the workload to a weaker boundary should be the last option; first remove unnecessary dependencies or provide them through a controlled service.

What does a practical deployment policy look like?
Use this checklist during design and code review:
- Runtime selected from a documented threat classification.
- Dedicated node or host placement for high-risk and multi-tenant jobs.
- No host networking, privileged mode, hostPath, host PID/IPC, device passthrough, or runtime sockets.
- Non-root user, dropped capabilities, seccomp, AppArmor or SELinux, no privilege escalation.
- Read-only root filesystem and a quota-limited temporary directory.
- Default-deny ingress and egress, controlled DNS, blocked metadata services, and an audited proxy.
- No host home directory, SSH keys, cloud credential files, administrator configuration, or broad service-account token.
- Short-lived, least-privilege credentials and explicit export of reviewed results.
- CPU, memory, process, file-descriptor, disk, and wall-clock limits.
- Clean reset or destruction after every task, with logs stored outside the sandbox.
- Monitoring for process, file, network, policy, image, and lifecycle events.
- Regular adversarial tests for escape, exfiltration, persistence, and denial of service.
Which isolation design should you use?
Choose the smallest boundary that still keeps a successful compromise within an acceptable blast radius. A trusted internal build with no secrets may fit a hardened container. Untrusted code that needs ordinary Linux and Kubernetes ergonomics is a strong gVisor candidate. User-submitted programs, browser agents, sensitive data, and multi-tenant services generally justify a microVM or VM, even when startup and memory costs are higher.
No runtime removes the need for least privilege. The final design should make an agent’s normal task easy while making host access, credential theft, persistence, and unrestricted egress difficult, visible, and temporary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run an AI coding agent on my laptop safely?
Use a disposable VM or microVM with no access to your personal home directory, SSH keys, cloud credentials, or local container socket. Keep networking disabled or proxy-only, and copy reviewed patches out rather than sharing the whole project read-write.
Does gVisor replace a virtual machine for every threat model?
No. gVisor reduces direct host-kernel exposure but still depends on the host, its runtime, and configuration. A separate-kernel microVM or VM is preferable when the workload is highly hostile, multi-tenant, or allowed to exercise browser and system-level features.
How can an agent install packages without unrestricted internet access?
Expose an internal, authenticated package mirror through an egress proxy and allow only that endpoint. Cache approved artifacts, log package requests, and rebuild the sandbox from a clean image instead of preserving package state between tasks.
What should I export from an untrusted sandbox?
Export narrowly defined results such as a patch, test report, or signed artifact after scanning and review. Avoid exporting the entire workspace, executable hooks, credential files, hidden directories, or generated CI and build configuration without inspection.
