Run every tool-using AI agent inside a sandbox, then restrict what that sandbox can reach. A properly configured container can suit constrained, lower-risk work, but it shares the host kernel and therefore retains kernel-breakout risk. A virtual machine (VM) or microVM supplies a stronger same-host boundary by using a separate guest kernel; dedicated hardware provides the greatest separation when the consequences justify its cost. None of these choices is sufficient by itself: network access, credentials, mounts, tools, data, compute, persistence, monitoring and emergency shutdown must be controlled as one design.
The right boundary follows the agent’s action surface and the impact of a compromise. Treat repository files, web pages, dependency documentation, model responses and tool output as untrusted input, and increase isolation and human review as the agent gains access or autonomy.
What does “isolating an AI agent” actually involve?
Isolation is not just putting an agent process in a container. The boundary must cover the agent’s scaffolding, command runner, inference connection, files and data, credentials, compute allocation, network paths and every tool or service it can influence. Any one of those channels can become a route to the host or to another system.
An agent that can read untrusted content and execute commands should be treated as potentially compromised. A prompt saying “behave safely” is not a technical control. Isolation is the combination of a compute boundary and explicit limits on communication, identity, data and actions.

This inventory determines whether sharing a host kernel is acceptable and which controls must be tested before production use.
Should I use a container, a VM, a microVM or dedicated hardware?
Choose the least powerful boundary that still leaves an acceptable consequence if the agent is compromised. Containers are efficient but share the host kernel. VMs and microVMs add a guest kernel and therefore a stronger boundary. Dedicated hardware separates the workload from other tenants and is reserved for the highest-consequence cases.
| Option | Boundary and suitable use | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Configured OCI container | Kernel controls constrain a process on the same host. Suitable for constrained, lower-risk tasks when host-kernel sharing is acceptable. | The host kernel is shared, so a kernel vulnerability or configuration error can permit breakout. Host hardening and every mount, capability and socket still matter. |
| VM or microVM | A guest kernel is distinct from the host. Prefer this for generated or untrusted code, broad development tooling or a high-impact failure. | It is stronger, not infallible. Hypervisor settings, shared folders, network routes, credentials and operational procedures require review. |
| Dedicated hardware | Separate physical resources for the most sensitive or high-consequence workloads. | It brings the greatest separation in the cited maturity model, but also higher infrastructure and operations cost. Guidance does not require it for every deployment. |
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) describes these as maturity levels rather than guarantees. A well-configured container can be safer than a poorly configured VM with broad mounts and unrestricted networking.

1. Define the task and failure impact
Write down exactly what the agent must do and what would happen if it altered a repository, exposed data, sent an API request or consumed excessive resources. Classify the task as low, moderate or high consequence. Generated-code execution, untrusted pull requests and agents with production credentials normally warrant a VM or microVM rather than a container-only boundary.
2. Draw the trust boundaries
Place the agent runtime, command executor, model service, workspace, secrets, MCP servers and external APIs on a diagram. Mark which components are inside the sandbox, which are outside and how they communicate. Segregate components where practical; a host-side service reached through a socket is still part of the effective attack surface.
3. Select and harden the execution boundary
Use a configured container, VM, microVM or dedicated host according to the impact assessment. Start from a minimal image or guest, remove unnecessary tools and services, and keep the host and virtualization layer maintained. Do not treat the default settings of any product as a complete threat model.
4. Make network access deny-by-default
Deny inbound and outbound traffic unless the task requires a specific connection. Permit only named destinations and protocols, and route unavoidable external access through a controlled proxy that logs and filters requests. For higher-risk work, use a model-only or disconnected environment with pre-downloaded tools and information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. Give the agent a distinct, minimal identity
Create a unique identity for each agent or workload. Grant only the permissions required for the current task, and use short-lived credentials that expire when the run ends. A credential proxy can perform an approved operation without exposing the raw secret to the agent. Never pass broad administrator tokens simply because the agent may need them later.
6. Review every boundary crossing
Record each filesystem mount, environment variable, socket, proxy, port forward and external tool. Ask what an agent could do if it controlled that interface. Keep host services outside the sandbox unless there is a documented reason to expose them, and make the interface narrow and authenticated.
7. Set resource and lifetime limits
Bound CPU, memory, disk, process count and network use where the platform supports it. Set execution timeouts and queue limits. Decide which files and caches persist between runs; disposable sessions should be destroyed and their data securely removed when the task completes.

8. Add observation and a stop mechanism
Log agent requests, command execution, filesystem events, network flows, credential use and administrative changes. Assign an owner who can suspend the session, revoke credentials and isolate the workload quickly. Require human approval for consequential actions such as production changes, financial transactions or external messages.
9. Validate the deployed configuration
Test the actual image, guest, mounts, network routes, proxies, credentials, MCP servers and cleanup process. Verify that a denied connection is really denied, that a mounted path has the intended permissions, that secrets are absent after teardown and that an emergency stop works. Repeat these checks after platform or policy changes.
What makes a container safe enough for an AI agent?
A container is a same-host isolation mechanism, not a miniature VM. It can fit lower-risk work when the host kernel, container runtime and configuration are trusted and the agent’s access is narrow. The residual possibility of kernel-exploit breakout means the host must be treated as part of the security boundary.
Keep the container’s authority narrow
- Use a dedicated runtime identity and the smallest filesystem view that supports the task.
- Avoid privileged modes and unnecessary kernel capabilities.
- Do not expose host control sockets or device interfaces unless there is a reviewed, narrowly scoped requirement.
- Prefer read-only inputs and a separate writable output area when the workflow permits.
- Keep package installation and compilers out of the image unless required; if they are required, remove resulting build artifacts and caches at teardown.
Docker explicitly warns that mounting the Docker Engine socket into a container gives the container full access to the host environment. An agent that can reach that socket should therefore be considered able to control the host, regardless of other container settings.
Understand workspace modes
Docker’s documented AI Sandbox designs distinguish mountless operation, clone mode and direct workspace mode. A direct workspace mount is read-write, so changes made by the agent are visible on the host. Clone mode uses a private clone from a read-only host mount, limiting accidental host modification while preserving a useful starting point. Mountless operation gives the least workspace integration and the smallest data path.
Choose deliberately: give the agent a disposable clone for code changes, not a broad mount of a home directory or production checkout. Record whether any path is read-only, read-write or persistent.
When is a VM or microVM the better choice?
Use a VM or microVM when the agent executes generated or untrusted code, needs broad development tooling, handles sensitive data or could cause substantial damage if it escapes its process boundary. A separate guest kernel reduces the direct impact of a host-kernel flaw compared with a container, although the hypervisor and integration paths remain security-critical.
Keep the guest disposable
Build a minimal guest image, create a fresh instance for each session or task group, and destroy it after collecting only the approved outputs. Persistent disks, snapshots and shared folders can preserve secrets or malicious changes, so define retention and deletion rules before deployment.
Audit VM integration points
- Shared folders and clipboard or file-transfer features.
- Virtual network interfaces, port forwards and host proxies.
- Guest-agent channels and management APIs.
- Device pass-through, accelerators and host-mounted caches.
- Credential brokers and local MCP services.
Docker describes its AI Sandboxes as lightweight microVMs with separate Linux kernels, isolated network paths, a separate Docker Engine and credential proxying. Those are product design descriptions; verify the exact configuration and contract you deploy rather than assuming every microVM offers identical protection.

How should network egress be controlled?
Network egress is part of containment. An agent that cannot reach an internal service, exfiltration endpoint or package repository has fewer ways to turn a prompt injection into an incident.

Build an allowlist
Start with no inbound or outbound connectivity. Add only the domains, addresses and ports required for the task, and document who approved each exception. Separate model access from general web access where possible: an agent may need an inference endpoint without needing arbitrary browsing or shell access to the corporate network.
Use a controlled proxy when access is unavoidable
Terminate external requests at a proxy that authenticates the sandbox, applies destination policy, limits upload size and records requests. Avoid a proxy that silently grants broad access to every destination. For high-risk tasks, a disconnected environment with preloaded dependencies and reference material may be safer than attempting to filter the open internet.
Test both directions
Check that unsolicited inbound connections cannot reach the agent and that denied outbound destinations fail closed. Test DNS, IPv4 and IPv6 paths, alternate ports and proxy bypass attempts. Include network policy in teardown tests so a destroyed session cannot leave a forwarding rule behind.
How do credentials, mounts and MCP tools create escape paths?
Most practical boundary failures occur at integrations rather than at the nominal container or VM boundary. A mounted secret, SSH-agent socket or host-side tool can grant more authority than the sandbox itself.
Credentials
Use separate identities, minimum permissions and the shortest practical lifetime. Inject a narrowly scoped capability through a broker where possible, and prevent the agent from reading the broker’s underlying credentials. Revoke or expire credentials when the run stops, including after an emergency shutdown.
Filesystem mounts
Mount only the exact workspace or data subset needed. Prefer read-only mounts for reference material and a disposable writable area for outputs. Confirm path permissions from inside the guest and from the host, because a read-write mount makes agent changes visible outside the sandbox.
SSH and host sockets
Do not expose an SSH agent socket, container-engine socket or host administration API by default. If a workflow requires one, place an authenticated broker in front of it and allow only the specific operation. Treat direct socket access as equivalent to granting the service’s authority to the agent.

MCP and other tools
List every MCP server and state where it runs. Docker documents local stdio MCP servers as host-side services rather than services inside the sandbox VM; that placement means their host permissions and input validation become part of the agent’s attack surface. Run tools inside the sandbox when practical, or expose a narrow, audited API instead of a general host process.
How do I handle persistence, cleanup and monitoring?
Disposable execution limits the time available for an intrusion and prevents one task from inheriting another task’s state. At the end of a run, export only approved artifacts, revoke credentials, remove the guest or container, delete temporary storage and verify that logs do not contain secrets.
Monitoring should capture what the agent attempted, not just whether the process exited successfully. Useful records include command lines, file changes, package installation, network destinations, denied policy events, tool calls and administrative actions. Alert on unexpected destinations, privilege changes, access to sensitive paths, unusual resource consumption and repeated policy denials.

Keep an operator-controlled stop path that does not depend on the agent cooperating. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and international co-authors recommend cautious adoption, segmentation and progressively increasing access and autonomy; this operational progression should be reflected in both policy and monitoring.
Which common designs fail, and how can I fix them?
“The prompt tells the agent not to touch the host.”
Instructions are not a boundary, and untrusted content can attempt to override them. Put the restriction in the runtime, network policy, identity and filesystem configuration, then test it.
“A container is automatically isolated.”
Containers share the host kernel. Remove unnecessary privileges and sockets, narrow mounts and egress, and move to a VM or microVM when a kernel breakout would have unacceptable consequences.
“The agent needs the host Docker socket to build images.”
That socket grants full host control according to Docker’s documentation. Use a separate build service or an isolated builder with a tightly scoped API instead of exposing the host engine.
“A broad read-write repository mount is convenient.”
It also makes destructive or malicious changes immediately visible on the host. Use a disposable clone or an isolated workspace and review the diff before exporting changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Outbound access is harmless because the agent has no secrets.”
Network access can enable data exfiltration, command-and-control traffic, supply-chain downloads or attacks on internal services. Deny by default and allow only the destinations the task needs.
“A VM removes the need for review.”
Hypervisor bugs, shared folders, guest agents, credentials and network paths can still create a breach. Keep layered controls, monitoring and human approval for high-impact actions.
What do the main guidance sources recommend?
The NCSC’s current article is interim practical advice pending formal guidance. It recommends sandboxing that controls local and network communication, defining boundaries across execution, network, compute, credentials and data, and applying stronger isolation to higher-risk scenarios. Its maturity model distinguishes no isolation, same-host kernel controls such as OCI containers, virtualization and dedicated hardware; it does not guarantee that any particular configuration is secure.
OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance notes that agentic coding tools can execute commands, install packages, edit files and access networks. It identifies repositories, external content, MCP servers and rules files as attack surfaces and advises sandboxing, constrained access and resource limits.

What is a sensible deployment pattern?
Constrained, low-impact automation
Use a hardened container with a disposable workspace, no host sockets, default-deny egress, short-lived identity and automated teardown. Keep the agent away from production credentials and require review before exporting changes.
Untrusted code analysis or generation
Use a fresh VM or microVM per session, a narrow clone or read-only source mount, controlled package access and no route to internal services. Capture outputs and logs outside the guest through a one-way or brokered channel.

High-consequence operations
Prefer a dedicated host or strongly isolated VM, separate accounts and networks, explicit human approval and continuous monitoring. Consider disconnected execution where the task permits it, and treat every integration as a separately reviewed trust boundary.
Where can I learn more about the underlying controls?
For broader container-security study, Wiley lists Securing Cloud Containers: Building and Running Secure Cloud-Native Applications by Sina Manavi, Abbas Kudrati and Muhammad Aizuddin Zali. The July 2025 softcover edition is listed at 352 pages with ISBN 978-1-394-33373-8. It covers container and Kubernetes security generally, not AI-agent sandbox design specifically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent run safely in a container without a VM?
Yes, for constrained, lower-risk work when sharing the host kernel is acceptable and the container has narrow mounts, identities, tools and network access. Move to a VM or microVM when the agent runs untrusted code or a breakout would have serious consequences.
Should I let an agent browse the internet to install packages?
Only when the task requires it and through an allowlisted, monitored path. A preloaded or disconnected environment is safer for high-risk work because it removes arbitrary download and exfiltration routes.
Recommended Free Tools
How often should an agent sandbox be rebuilt?
Rebuild for every disposable session or task group when practical, especially after untrusted code execution. At minimum, destroy mutable state, revoke credentials and verify cleanup before reusing an environment.
What should I do if an agent appears compromised?
Stop the workload through an operator-controlled mechanism, revoke its credentials and block its network paths. Preserve relevant logs, discard the guest or container, and investigate any mounted systems or services the agent could reach.
