To play with friends in Minecraft Dungeons II, start an online session and either invite a friend through the in-game Friends list or share your party’s eight-character code. Your friend enters that code in the join-by-party-code dialog; Mojang says it works across platforms, from the lobby or during an ongoing game. Parties can include up to four players, including a mix of local couch co-op players and remote friends.

What are the ways to join friends in Minecraft Dungeons II?

You can connect through a friends-list invitation, an eight-character party code, or matchmaking. Which option is most useful depends on whether everyone is online, whether players are sharing a device, and whether friends are on different platforms.

Method Best for How it works Important condition
Friends-list invite Inviting someone you can select from the in-game Friends list The host selects an online friend and chooses Invite to Game. The detailed button sequence comes from an independent walkthrough; labels and availability can vary by platform or interface.
Party code Joining across platforms or when a direct invite is inconvenient The host shares the party’s unique eight-character alphanumeric code. The friend enters it in the join-by-party-code dialog. Mojang says it works through the lobby or an ongoing game, regardless of platform.
Matchmaking Adding players when friends are unavailable or party slots remain open Matchmaking can add players to a session or fill open slots. The party limit remains four players.
Couch co-op Playing with people sharing one device Local players play together on the same device. The sequel also supports taking a couch session online so remote players can join the same party.

Mojang’s co-op article, published September 29, 2026, documents the multiplayer systems. An independent walkthrough reports the Friends-list sequence, but Mojang’s article does not provide a complete controller-by-controller menu guide. As a result, use the party code when menu wording or platform-specific friend systems make a direct invite unclear.

How do I invite friends to my online party?

Start an online session, then either share its party code or send an invitation through the Friends list. The exact location of the party or multiplayer screen can differ by platform, so follow the in-game labels rather than relying on a single fixed button sequence.

  • Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
  1. Start an online session. Choose the online multiplayer path, not an offline-only session.
  2. Open the party or multiplayer screen. Find the option that displays or provides the party code. The cited official guidance confirms the code system but does not identify one universal menu path for every platform.
  3. Share the displayed code. Send your friends the full eight-character code, including its letters and numbers.
  4. Alternatively, invite a friend directly. If your platform shows the in-game Friends list, open it, select an online friend, and choose Invite to Game, as described in the independent walkthrough.
  5. Keep room for your group. The total party can have up to four players. Matchmaking can fill remaining slots if you want additional players.

The host’s online session matters: the reported friends-list invitation applies to an online friend and an online game. If you want remote friends to join people playing locally, use the mixed couch-and-online setup rather than treating couch co-op as an offline-only arrangement.

How do I join a friend’s party with a code?

Open the join-by-party-code dialog and enter the host’s current eight-character code. According to Technical Director Stefan Annell, the code is unique to the current party, and friends can join through the lobby or an ongoing game, regardless of platform.

  1. Ask the host to share the code shown for their party.
  2. In your game, choose the join-by-party-code option.
  3. Enter the eight-character alphanumeric code and submit it.

This is the clearest documented route for a cross-platform party because it does not depend on selecting the host through a platform-specific friends interface. Mojang describes its crossplay design goal as “one-click crossplay,” but that does not mean every platform presents identical menus or account prompts.

Can couch co-op players join online friends?

Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II supports mixed co-op: players can share a device locally and take that session online so remote friends join the same party. The full group still has a four-player maximum.

That gives a group three practical arrangements:

  • All local: players share a device in couch co-op.
  • All remote: players join an online party using an invite, party code, or matchmaking.
  • Mixed: two or more players share a device while remote friends join online, subject to the total party limit.

The official co-op information establishes that mixed play is supported, but it does not give a platform-by-platform controller setup or specify how local-player slots are added. Check the local multiplayer prompts on the device hosting the couch session.

Which joining method should I use?

Choose based on your group’s setup: a code is the most reliable documented cross-platform route, a Friends-list invite is convenient when the friend appears online in the game, and matchmaking is useful for filling open places.

You and your friend use different platforms Party code Mojang says the code works regardless of platform.
Your friend is online and visible in Friends Friends-list invite The host can select the friend and choose Invite to Game.
You are joining a session already in progress Party code Mojang says a friend can join through an ongoing game.
You want to play together on one device Couch co-op Local players can play on the same device.
Some players are local and others remote Mixed couch-and-online co-op The local session can be taken online for remote players to join.
You have fewer than four players and want to fill the party Matchmaking Matchmaking can add players or fill open slots.

How do cross-platform play and hero progression work?

Crossplay lets players on different platforms join the same party; linking platform accounts to the same Microsoft account also supports continuing with the same hero on another platform. Mojang says hero data is stored online, so the hero’s progression is not tied to a single device.

Account continuity is distinct from joining a party: use the party code or another multiplayer method to connect, and use the same Microsoft account across platforms when you want to continue with the same hero. The official article also says the game uses dedicated servers and selects a server based on each player’s ping. It does not specify manual server selection or provide a way to choose a particular server.

What should I check if an invite or party code does not work?

First confirm that the host is in an online session and that the code is the one currently displayed for that party. Then check the joining method and party capacity before trying again.

  • The friend cannot join an offline session: switch to the online multiplayer path if remote players need to join.
  • A direct invite is unavailable: use the party code instead; the documented friends-list flow depends on the friend appearing online and platform menus may differ.
  • The code is rejected: check that all eight characters were copied from the current party code and entered in the join-by-party-code dialog. The code is unique to the current party, so do not assume an old code remains valid.
  • The party is full: remove or replace a player before inviting another; parties are limited to four. Alternatively, matchmaking can fill open places but cannot raise the limit.
  • Local players are trying to join remote friends: use the mixed couch-and-online setup so the local session is online.
  • The same hero is missing on another platform: confirm that the platform accounts are linked to the same Microsoft account.

Mojang’s published co-op guidance does not provide a universal troubleshooting path for platform subscription requirements, network errors, or privacy settings. Menu labels and access controls can vary by platform, and a friend’s ability to choose Join Game depends on session privacy settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Minecraft Dungeons II party code expire?

Mojang describes each code as unique to the current party, but the published guidance does not state a precise expiration timer or whether a code changes after every session. Ask the host for the code currently shown rather than relying on one shared earlier.

Do I need a paid online subscription to play with friends?

The cited co-op information does not list platform-specific subscription requirements. Check the online-play requirements for the platform you use, since they are not established by the multiplayer overview.

Can I choose which dedicated server my party uses?

Mojang says the game selects a dedicated server based on each player’s ping. The published information does not describe a manual server selector.

Are the join menus identical on every console and PC?

No universal controller-by-controller sequence is documented in the official co-op overview. The independent walkthrough’s Friends-list labels should be treated as platform- and interface-dependent.
