An exchange API timeout does not prove that an order failed. Your request may have reached the matching engine even when your client received no usable response. A reliable trading integration therefore treats submission as a durable state machine: save the intended order before sending it, attach an exchange-supported client identifier, monitor authenticated order events, query the exchange when a response is ambiguous, and reconcile after every connection interruption. Retries must respect each venue’s identifier rules, rate limits, stream behavior, and cancel/replace semantics. No exchange documentation cited here promises universal exactly-once submission, so the goal is to make every intent recoverable and to prevent an unresolved intent from being submitted twice.

What does a reliable exchange API integration do?

It separates your system’s intent from the transport result. “The HTTP request timed out” is a network fact, not an order-status fact. Your application should be able to restart, reconnect, and determine whether an order is pending, open, partially filled, filled, canceled, expired, rejected, or still unknown without relying on an in-memory callback.

The durable record is the anchor. Before submission, write the symbol or contract, side, quantity, order type, price and time-in-force where applicable, a stable internal order ID, the exchange client-order ID if supported, and a state such as pending_submission. Store request timestamps, the API product and environment, and enough request metadata to audit what was sent. Commit this record before making the network call.

After sending, process two independent information paths: the immediate REST or WebSocket response and the authenticated private event stream. A response can acknowledge acceptance while later events report a fill, cancel, rejection, or expiration. A stream can deliver the decisive event after the original request has timed out. Your database, not either connection, should be the source of truth for the current state.

What happens if an order request times out?

Mark the intent as unknown, do not immediately submit a second order, and resolve the first attempt with private events or a status query. Binance Spot documentation describes a 10-second processing timeout in which the matching-engine result can remain unknown; a server error can also leave execution status unknown. It advises checking the User Data Stream and then querying the order before retrying: Binance Spot REST API documentation.

Use an explicit ambiguous state

Distinguish transport_failed from exchange_rejected. A DNS error, broken socket, HTTP 504, or processing timeout means you do not know what the venue did. Only an exchange response that definitively identifies rejection, or a later exchange query/event, should move the order to a terminal rejected state.

Resolve with the same identity

  1. Keep the original internal order ID and client-order ID unchanged.
  2. Read recent authenticated order events for the symbol or account.
  3. Query by exchange order ID when you have it; otherwise use the client-order ID if that venue supports lookup by it.
  4. Record the exchange’s status, cumulative quantity, average fill data, and timestamps.
  5. Only after the first intent is resolved as absent and the venue’s identifier rules permit a new submission should you create a replacement intent.

Do not use a generic “retry three times” loop for order creation. A retry is safe only after you have established that the original intent cannot exist at the exchange, or after you deliberately choose a new order and accept the risk of two live orders.

How do I know whether an exchange received my order?

Use both the authenticated user-data stream and the venue’s order-status query. The stream gives low-latency updates, while the query repairs gaps after disconnects, process restarts, or missed events. Binance Spot’s WebSocket account API documents order-status, open-order, and order-history queries and recommends user-data streams for continuous monitoring: Binance Spot WebSocket account API.

Interpret the evidence in layers

  • Client acknowledgement: your library received a syntactically valid response. This is not proof of a fill.
  • Exchange order ID: the venue accepted the order sufficiently to assign an exchange identifier. Persist it immediately.
  • Private order event: an authenticated event reports received, open, changed, trade, done, canceled, or another venue-specific state.
  • Status query: a REST or WebSocket query confirms current state and quantities when events are delayed or unavailable.

Event names differ. Coinbase Exchange’s full WebSocket channel documents received, open, done, changed, and trade events, plus stop-order activation lifecycle: Coinbase Exchange WebSocket feeds. Map each venue’s event vocabulary into your internal states instead of assuming that an event called “received” means the order is open or filled.

Record quantities, not just labels

An order can be partially filled before a disconnect. Reconciliation must compare original quantity, cumulative executed quantity, remaining quantity, fees where supplied, and the final status. A replacement should be sized from the confirmed remaining quantity, not from the original request.

How do I avoid placing the same order twice?

Use a durable internal idempotency record and the exchange’s client-order identifier, but treat the identifier’s scope and reuse rules as venue-specific. Binance.US documentation says a new order using the same client ID is accepted only after the previous order is filled or expired, while a canceled order’s identifier may be reused; it also documents cancel-and-replace as non-transactional: Binance.US API documentation. Validate the exact product and environment before relying on those rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design the submission transaction

  1. Generate one stable internal ID for the trading intent.
  2. Generate or reserve one client-order ID that meets the venue’s character and length requirements.
  3. Insert the intent with a unique database constraint on the internal ID and, where appropriate, the client-order ID plus venue.
  4. Commit the row before sending the request.
  5. When a worker claims the row, use a lease or compare-and-set transition so two workers cannot submit the same pending intent concurrently.
  6. Persist the exact payload hash and attempt number. A network retry must reference the same intent, not create a new row automatically.

Uniqueness is not universal: one venue may scope client IDs to an account, another to a product or session, and another may offer limited lookup support. Keep your internal ID independent so a venue’s format change does not break reconciliation.

How should I reconcile orders after a WebSocket disconnect?

Reconnect the private stream, re-authenticate, resubscribe, and then query open orders plus relevant recent order history. Do not assume a stream provides durable replay unless that exchange explicitly documents replay or sequence recovery. Reconciliation should cover the period from the last event your database committed through the moment the new subscription is active.

Recovery sequence

  1. Mark the stream as disconnected and stop treating local state as current.
  2. Reconnect within the venue’s documented connection rules and establish the authenticated subscription.
  3. Capture the subscription or connection timestamp and any sequence token the API provides.
  4. Query all open orders for affected accounts and products.
  5. Query recent order history wide enough to include orders submitted shortly before the disconnect.
  6. Merge query results idempotently, keyed by exchange order ID or the venue-supported client ID.
  7. Apply newly arriving stream events after the snapshot, resolving conflicts according to documented sequence or timestamp rules.
  8. Release the account for normal submission only after unresolved intents have been classified.

Binance Coin Futures documentation states that a user-data connection is valid for 24 hours, describes same-user event ordering on a single connection, and recommends prioritizing user-data streams for order and position data during volatility because REST responses may be delayed: Binance Coin Futures user-data streams. Those are Futures-specific details; do not apply the 24-hour limit or ordering behavior to Spot without checking its documentation.

Make reconciliation repeatable

Run the same procedure after a process crash, credential rotation, deploy, clock problem, or detected event gap. Keep an audit trail of the snapshot request, response time, event offsets, and each state transition. A reconciliation job should be safe to run twice without duplicating fills or changing a terminal state incorrectly.

What are the risks of cancel-and-replace?

Unless an API explicitly guarantees atomic behavior, model cancel and replacement as two separate operations. Binance.US documents outcomes in which one leg succeeds and the other fails, so a response that mentions both operations must be interpreted per leg.

Track both operations

  • Create a cancellation intent referencing the existing exchange order ID.
  • Wait for a definitive cancellation response or query the order.
  • Record whether any quantity filled while cancellation was in flight.
  • Submit the replacement only with the confirmed remaining quantity and a new client-order ID when required.
  • Reconcile both old and new orders before reporting the position as corrected.

If cancellation fails but the replacement succeeds, two orders may remain active. If cancellation succeeds but replacement fails, exposure may be lower than intended. Your risk controls should alert on either partial outcome rather than treating the combined request as a single boolean.

How should retries and rate limits work?

Rate limits are part of order-state reliability, not merely performance tuning. Queue actions durably, honor the venue’s response headers and retry guidance, and prioritize status recovery when an order’s existence is ambiguous.

Binance describes IP-based request-weight limits, account order-count limits, HTTP 429 responses that require backoff, and possible HTTP 418 bans after repeated violations in its Spot REST guidance: Binance Spot REST API documentation. Its developer portal says limits vary by product and endpoint and advises production systems to account for request weights, connection health, retries, and reconnection; that page was last modified June 26, 2026: Binance developer documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kraken states that Spot trading endpoints are rate-limited by account and currency pair; its article was updated October 1, 2026: Kraken API rate limits. A backoff policy designed for IP limits can therefore be wrong for a pair- or account-scoped limit.

Safe retry policy

  • Classify errors as definitive rejection, throttling, connectivity failure, or ambiguous execution.
  • For 429 or equivalent responses, honor Retry-After or venue guidance and apply exponential backoff with jitter.
  • Never drop a queued order because an endpoint is throttled; retain it with an expiry and risk limit.
  • For ambiguous creation responses, perform status recovery before another create request.
  • Separate polling budgets from submission budgets so a recovery storm does not consume all capacity.
  • Alert before limits are exhausted and record the limiting scope (IP, account, pair, or endpoint).

Which exchange API capabilities should I compare?

Compare operational semantics, not just authentication methods or nominal latency. The following axes determine how much recovery code you need.

Capability Questions to verify Documented examples
Client order IDs What field is accepted? What is the uniqueness scope? Can status be looked up by it? When may an old value be reused? Binance.US documents reuse rules that differ for filled, expired, and canceled orders.
Ambiguous responses Can a processing timeout or server error leave execution unknown? Is there a status query by client ID and exchange order ID? Binance Spot documents unknown execution after a matching-engine timeout and provides order-status queries.
Private events Which events indicate receipt, openness, changes, trades, completion, or cancellation? How are authentication, ordering, sequence, and reconnect handled? Coinbase Exchange’s full channel lists received, open, done, changed, and trade events. Binance Coin Futures documents a 24-hour connection lifetime.
Rate limits Are limits keyed by IP, account, pair, endpoint, or request weight? Are headers and retry delays supplied? What happens after repeated violations? Binance documents IP weights, order counts, 429 backoff, and possible 418 bans; Kraken documents account-and-pair limits for Spot trading.
Cancel/replace Are cancellation and creation atomic? How are partial successes reported? Can either leg be queried independently? Binance.US documents non-transactional cancel-and-replace outcomes.
Test environment Does a testnet or demo cover this exact product, order type, stream, and failure behavior? Which production constraints are not simulated? Binance cautions that environment support varies by product: developer documentation.

What should I test before going live?

Test failure paths deliberately, not only successful submissions. Use the venue’s test environment when it supports the exact product, while documenting what the simulator does not reproduce.

What monitoring catches a lost-order illusion?

Monitor state age and reconciliation gaps, not just HTTP error rates. Useful metrics include the count and age of pending_submission and unknown intents, time from submit to exchange acknowledgement, stream disconnect duration, query latency, event-to-database lag, rejected and throttled requests, and differences between local open orders and exchange snapshots.

Alert when an unknown intent exceeds a risk-based deadline, when an exchange order has no local record, when a local open order is absent from a fresh exchange snapshot, or when cumulative fills differ. Include venue, product, account, client ID, exchange order ID, and correlation ID in structured logs. Never log API secrets or private signing material.

What is the practical implementation pattern?

A small set of explicit states is safer than inferring status from nullable fields. One workable model is:

pending_submission → submitting → unknown | acknowledged
acknowledged → open → partially_filled → filled
acknowledged → canceled | expired | rejected
unknown → acknowledged | open | partially_filled | filled | canceled | rejected | absent

Workers perform compare-and-set transitions, while a reconciler is allowed to advance an unknown state from authoritative exchange evidence. Store every transition as an append-only event as well as updating the current row. This lets operators explain why a replacement was or was not sent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At startup, load all non-terminal intents, reconnect private streams, query open orders and recent history, and reconcile before accepting new risk. At shutdown, stop new submissions, let in-flight requests reach a classified state where possible, and persist the stream position or last reconciliation timestamp.

Can an integration guarantee exactly-once order submission?

Not from the documentation cited here. Client IDs, durable intent records, private events, queries, and reconciliation make duplicate submission unlikely and detectable, but they cannot turn an unreliable network into a universal exactly-once transaction. Design for at-least-once communication with idempotent recovery and explicit operator intervention for genuinely unresolved cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I retry an order after an HTTP 500 response?

Treat the response as ambiguous unless the exchange explicitly says the request was rejected before matching. Search private events and query by the exchange or client identifier first; only then decide whether a new intent is safe.

How long should an order remain in an unknown state?

Use a deadline based on product volatility, order lifetime, and your risk limits rather than a universal number. Escalate when the deadline expires, but do not silently create a second order while the first remains unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do WebSocket events arrive in the same order across multiple connections?

Do not assume global ordering when you use more than one connection. Follow the venue’s documented sequence rules, serialize reconciliation per account or product, and use a fresh exchange snapshot to resolve overlaps.

What should I do if the exchange order exists but my database does not?

Pause new risk for the affected account or symbol, import the order using its exchange ID and current quantities, and mark the import as a reconciliation event. Investigate the missing local write before resuming automated replacements.
