You can install wkhtmltopdf on some Linux shared-hosting accounts, but there is no universal shared-hosting method. Success depends on your provider allowing user-managed executables and supplying libraries, fonts, shell access, and an operating-system/CPU combination that matches the package. Ask those questions before downloading anything. If the account cannot run the required binary, the provider or an administrator must install it, or you need an environment where you control system packages.
What wkhtmltopdf does and why shared hosting is different
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML pages to PDF from the command line using Qt WebKit. The project describes it as running “headless,” so it does not require a display or display service. That does not make it self-contained: the project says its static builds link Qt statically, while other system packages and runtime font configuration are still required.
On a virtual or dedicated server you can normally install system packages as root. On shared hosting, the provider controls the operating system and often blocks arbitrary executables, shell access, long-running processes, or package installation. A copied binary in your home directory is therefore an approved deployment option only when the host confirms that it is allowed and compatible.
Check your hosting account before choosing a package
Send your host a support ticket and request specific answers. Do not select a download merely because its filename contains “Linux.”

- Operating system and release: ask for the exact distribution and version.
- CPU architecture: confirm whether the account runs on the architecture targeted by the package (for example, x86_64).
- SSH and shell access: you need a way to run and test the command, unless the provider offers an approved application wrapper.
- User-managed executables: ask whether binaries may be stored and executed from your home directory or application directory.
- Execution policy: confirm that the account does not mount your home or temporary directories with
noexec, and that process execution is permitted by the plan. - Runtime libraries and fonts: ask whether the libraries required by the selected package and usable font configuration are installed.
- Resource limits: ask about memory, CPU time, process limits, and maximum request duration for PDF conversion.
- Provider approval: get written confirmation if the terms prohibit customer-supplied server programs.
cPanel documentation is a useful illustration of the boundary: its installation procedure requires root access for installing cPanel & WHM. That is not a statement that every shared host requires root for wkhtmltopdf; it shows why a customer without administrator privileges cannot install server-wide software and may need provider assistance.
Use the official package list and match it exactly
The project’s downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as its current stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. Treat that as the project’s published stable-series information, not a promise that every current host supports it. Check the live package table at wkhtmltopdf.org/downloads immediately before installation.
Packages are distribution- and architecture-specific. The project’s FAQ explains why generic Linux builds are unreliable: even a package described as static still depends on system components outside Qt. Choose the row matching the host’s exact distribution and architecture.

Installation paths on shared hosting
Path A: provider-installed system package
This is usually the most reliable shared-hosting arrangement. Give support the exact distribution, architecture, and package release you need. Ask them to install it system-wide and provide the full executable path, such as /usr/bin/wkhtmltopdf (the path is an example, not a guarantee). Have them confirm which fonts and libraries are available.
Do not run package-manager commands copied from a different distribution. Commands that are correct for one release can damage or fail on another, and customers normally lack the privileges required to run them anyway.

Path B: provider-approved user-local extraction
Some hosts allow you to upload an archive and extract the executable under your home directory. This is not a dependency workaround. The required system libraries and font configuration must still exist on the server, and the binary must be executable under the account’s policy.
- Download the package that exactly matches the host’s distribution and architecture from the official downloads page.
- Upload it over SSH or the host’s file manager to a private application directory.
- Extract it using the provider-approved method.
- Set execute permission only if the host permits it, for example
chmod 755 /home/USER/bin/wkhtmltopdf. - Use the absolute path in your application rather than relying on
PATH.
Replace USER and every path with your account’s real values. If extraction produces a binary but execution reports a missing loader or library, stop and ask the host to provide the dependency or install the package.
Path C: no executable installation allowed
If the provider blocks customer binaries, denies SSH execution, or cannot supply compatible libraries and fonts, there is no safe command-line trick that turns the account into a supported wkhtmltopdf environment. Request a provider-managed installation, use a VPS or dedicated server where you control packages, or move PDF rendering to a separate service.

Verify the binary before integrating it
Run tests with a small HTML file that you created, not customer-supplied content. First check the version:
/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltopdf --versionA working installation should print its version information and return a successful exit status. The exact output depends on the package. Next create a minimal test file:

Application integration and the security boundary
The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML, CSS, JavaScript, local-file references, and URLs supplied by users as untrusted input.

- Sanitize and constrain markup before handing it to the renderer.
- Prefer templates and data fields you control over arbitrary HTML.
- Do not allow users to choose unrestricted local file paths or executable content.
- Run conversion with the least-privileged account available.
- Store generated PDFs and temporary HTML outside publicly browsable directories where practical.
- Apply provider limits to request size, conversion time, and concurrent jobs.
Pass an absolute executable path from configuration, capture the process exit code and stderr, and treat a timeout or partial output as a failed conversion. Never report success merely because a process started.
Troubleshooting: diagnose in this order
“Permission denied” or execution is blocked
Likely cause: the account or filesystem forbids executable files, or the file lacks execute permission. Fix: verify the provider’s policy and directory mount options. Ask support for an approved path or provider-managed installation; do not attempt to bypass a security control.
“No such file or directory” after the file was uploaded
Likely cause: an incorrect path, wrong architecture, or a missing dynamic loader can produce this message. Fix: confirm the absolute path, package target, and host architecture with support. Re-download only the package that matches the host.

Missing shared library or loader error
Likely cause: the selected build needs system libraries that are absent. Fix: ask the provider to install the required dependencies or supply a supported binary. A “static” label does not remove this requirement.

Likely cause: unavailable fonts, incomplete font configuration, inaccessible resources, or page scripts that did not finish. Fix: ask which fonts are installed and whether outbound or local-resource access is restricted. Test with a self-contained HTML file before debugging remote assets.
Conversion times out or the host kills the process
Likely cause: shared-host CPU, memory, process, or request-time limits. Fix: reduce document complexity, queue jobs where permitted, and ask the provider for the account’s limits. Do not assume increasing a PHP timeout can override host-level controls.
The provider refuses installation
Likely cause: shared-account policy or lack of compatible packages. Fix: use the provider’s PDF feature, request an approved external rendering arrangement, or move rendering to a server where you control dependencies.

Keep conversion work out of latency-sensitive web requests when the host allows background jobs; otherwise a slow page can consume the request limit. Cache identical outputs, cap input size, and delete temporary files. Record the executable version, package target, exit status, stderr, and output size so failures can be correlated with provider changes.
