The safest way to install a Torchlight II community fix is to preserve both save locations before changing anything, use Steam Workshop when the fix is published there, and test one change at a time. Torchlight II keeps modded and unmodded characters in separate folders, so a character that appears to vanish after changing mods may still be intact. The optional Steam public_beta announced on October 22, 2026 adds another compatibility variable: older mods are not guaranteed to work, and the beta cannot currently play multiplayer with the default branch. This guide shows where saves live on each supported platform, how to make a restorable copy, how to activate a Workshop fix, and how to recover without destroying your only backup.

What is the safest installation method?

Use a conservative sequence: identify your storefront, operating system, branch and current mods; exit the game; copy the complete relevant save folders somewhere outside the game directory; install or subscribe to one fix; then verify the result before changing anything else. Keep the original copy untouched so you can return to the exact pre-installation state.

This approach matters because Torchlight II does not treat every character file as interchangeable. Unmodded saves are stored under save, while modded saves are stored under modsave. Switching a mod on or off can therefore make a character unavailable from the current setup without deleting the underlying files.

Before you touch the installation

  • Write down whether the game is installed through Steam or another storefront, and whether you are using Windows, macOS or Linux.
  • Record the current branch. The normal Steam release and the optional public_beta are separate compatibility choices.
  • List every active mod, its displayed version and the author’s installation or load-order instructions.
  • Close Torchlight II and its launcher completely before copying files.

How do Torchlight II’s save and mod-save folders work?

The game separates ordinary and modded progress. A character created or played with mods can be written to modsave, while an unmodded character is normally in save. The October 22, 2026 beta announcement says the default and beta branches share save data, but changing whether mods are enabled can make a save unavailable to load because these two save areas remain separate.

For that reason, anyone who has ever used mods should copy both folders, even if only one currently appears to contain characters. Do not infer that an empty character list means the files are gone; first check the other folder and preserve both before attempting a repair.

Where are the save folders on each platform?

Use the path matching both your storefront and operating system. Steam installations include a numeric Steam user ID in the final directory; non-Steam installations do not. Folder redirection, a changed storefront or a manually selected documents location can alter the actual location on an individual computer, so confirm the folder exists before copying.

The capitalization shown by the support documentation is not a reason to create a second folder manually. Browse from the parent directory and copy the folder that is actually present. If you use more than one Steam account, back up each numeric-ID directory that contains your characters.

How do I make a clean, recoverable backup?

A backup is useful only if it is complete, separate from the live save directory and left unchanged after you begin testing. Arc Games recommends copying the game saves or the entire save folder to the Desktop; a different drive or USB flash drive is also suitable. No particular storage device or capacity is required.

  1. Exit the game. Quit Torchlight II and wait for the launcher and Steam, if applicable, to finish any visible activity.
  2. Open the correct parent folder. Use the table above rather than guessing from a search result or from a different storefront’s installation.
  3. Copy both save areas when mods have been used. Copy save and modsave, including their numeric Steam-ID subfolders where present. If you have never used mods, copying the available save folder is still prudent, but preserving both is the safer choice before a branch or mod change.
  4. Place the copy elsewhere. Put the folders in a clearly named directory outside the active save location, such as a dated folder on the Desktop or another drive. Do not make a shortcut; copy the files themselves.
  5. Label the snapshot. Include the date, branch and mod state in the folder name, for example torchlight2-backup-2026-10-25-default-before-fix.
  6. Check the copy. Open the copied folders and confirm that character files and subfolders are present. Keep this snapshot unchanged while you test.

Make a new snapshot before every substantial branch or mod-set change. Never replace the only untouched backup with a later save created after a problem appears.

How do I install a community fix through Steam Workshop?

Workshop is the least error-prone route when the fix is published there: Steam handles the subscription and synchronization, while Torchlight II’s launcher is where you review activation and priority. Workshop availability does not certify a mod’s compatibility with your branch, your other mods or your characters, so the listing’s author instructions still control.

  1. Read the complete Workshop description. Check the stated game branch or version, dependencies, conflicts, required load order, multiplayer requirements and any instruction to start a new character.
  2. Subscribe in Steam. Subscribe to the specific item and allow Steam time to download or synchronize it. Do not start the game while the item is still visibly updating.
  3. Open the Torchlight II launcher or mod manager. Confirm that the fix appears in the available list, activate it, and inspect its position relative to other mods.
  4. Set the documented priority. If the author specifies an order, follow that order exactly. If no order is documented, do not invent one by repeatedly rearranging a large list; test the fix as a single change first.
  5. Launch and verify. Confirm that the expected character is visible in the appropriate save context and that the change described by the author is present. Exit normally before making another modification.

Steam’s automatic synchronization is a delivery mechanism, not a guarantee that an old mod will load correctly. A finished community fix may still depend on another item, conflict with an overhaul or behave differently on the beta branch.

Do I need GUTS to install an existing fix?

No. GUTS is Torchlight II’s editor for creating or editing mods; subscribing to an existing Workshop mod does not require it. Arc support describes GUTS as Windows-only, and the older Runic wiki says Steam users install it from Steam Library > Tools.

Those editor instructions are relevant if you are developing or repairing a mod, not for a player applying a finished fix. The non-Steam directions on the old wiki refer to a legacy 1.22.x.x release and should not be presented as verified installation steps for the 2026 beta.

How should I choose between two community fixes?

Do not choose solely by download count or the date of the last comment. Compare the practical compatibility information in each listing and select the option that matches your branch and setup.

Comparison point What to verify
Storefront and operating system Whether the author supports your Steam or non-Steam installation and your operating system.
Branch and version Explicit support for the default release or public_beta; do not assume support transfers between them.
Dependencies and conflicts Required libraries, incompatible overhauls and whether the fix replaces files another mod also changes.
Load order A documented priority or ordering rule in the listing.
Multiplayer Whether every player must use the same fix, mod combination and branch.
Rollback Whether you can deactivate it and restore the separate save snapshot you made first.

Official support explains Workshop synchronization and the game’s save behavior, but it does not certify arbitrary third-party fixes. Treat the author’s compatibility statement as a requirement to evaluate, not as a promise that covers every combination.

What changes when I use the October 2026 beta branch?

The Torchlight II team announced the Steam public_beta branch on October 22, 2026. It is optional; the default Steam version remains available. The announcement describes verified fixes and updated systems, but says older mods may fail to load or behave unexpectedly, so no existing community fix should be assumed compatible without an explicit statement from its author.

Switching branches safely

  1. Back up both save and modsave before changing the branch.
  2. Record the active mod list and whether each character was played modded or unmodded.
  3. Change the branch in Steam, let the client finish updating, then start with the smallest possible test: one fix or one clearly defined set.
  4. Check both save contexts if a character seems missing. Shared branch data does not merge the separate modded and unmodded folders into one list.

Default and beta players currently cannot play multiplayer with one another, according to that October 22 announcement. Friends who want to play together should use the same branch, and they should also follow the mod author’s requirement for matching mod combinations.

What does the 10-mod limit mean for installation?

Arc support states that Torchlight II permits a maximum of 10 active mods at once. Count the mods you activate in the launcher before adding another fix, and deactivate an unnecessary item rather than assuming the game will silently resolve the excess.

Arc’s merge guidance is aimed at people creating a merged mod, not at routine installation. A merged mod receives a distinct identifier, so independently merged copies are not equivalent for multiplayer. Do not merge a fix merely to avoid arranging the normal load list unless you understand the author’s instructions and the multiplayer consequences.

What should I do if a character or save becomes inaccessible?

Stop launching the game as soon as you notice a missing or broken character. First preserve the current save folders and your untouched backup; repeated launches can create newer files that make it harder to identify the recoverable state.

  1. Exit Torchlight II without creating or deleting characters.
  2. Copy the current save and modsave folders to a new, separately named incident folder.
  3. Check whether the character is in the other save area after the mod or branch change.
  4. Restore the prior mod activation and branch if that is the last known-good configuration.
  5. If the character remains inaccessible, follow the recovery-file procedure described by Arc Games support. Its documented files include .SVB, .restore and backup.tmp; preserve those files before attempting a restore.

Do not overwrite the only backup with a restored or newly generated folder. Keep the original snapshot and the incident copy until the character loads correctly and you have made another independent backup.

How can I roll back a fix cleanly?

Rollback has two separate parts: return the mod configuration to its previous state and return saves to the matching snapshot.

  1. Exit the game and launcher.
  2. In the mod manager, deactivate or unsubscribe from the fix according to its instructions, and restore the prior load order.
  3. If the character was played with the fix, restore the corresponding backed-up modsave folder; if it was unmodded, restore save. When uncertain, restore both folders from the same dated snapshot.
  4. Launch with the previous branch and configuration, then verify the character before making any new save.
  5. Keep the rollback snapshot until you have completed a normal play session without errors.

Which common mistakes cause avoidable problems?

  • Backing up only the visible character folder: the other save area may contain modded or unmodded progress that is not currently listed.
  • Copying while the game is open: files can change during the copy, leaving an incomplete snapshot.
  • Guessing the path: Steam, non-Steam, Windows, macOS and Linux use different locations.
  • Changing several mods together: you lose the ability to identify which change caused a failure.
  • Assuming Workshop means compatibility: synchronization does not remove dependencies, conflicts or branch limitations.
  • Testing beta multiplayer with default-branch friends: the October 2026 announcement says cross-branch multiplayer is not supported.
  • Relaunching after a missing character: preserve the folders first so recovery files and timestamps remain available.
  • Replacing the only backup: a backup is not recoverable if every copy is repeatedly overwritten by later saves.

What is the final pre-launch checklist?

  • Storefront and operating system are identified.
  • Current branch and active mods are recorded.
  • Both save and modsave have been copied if mods were ever used.
  • The backup is outside the live save folder and has a date and branch label.
  • The fix’s dependencies, conflicts, load order and branch support are documented.
  • Steam has finished Workshop synchronization.
  • The launcher shows the intended active list and priority.
  • You are changing only one fix or one clearly defined set.
  • Multiplayer players are on the same branch and meet the mod author’s requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify the correct Steam save folder when several numeric folders exist?

Open each numeric Steam-ID folder and look for the one containing your recent character files and timestamps. If more than one contains progress, copy every relevant folder rather than deleting older IDs; account or installation changes can leave multiple directories behind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep a backup on a USB flash drive instead of the Desktop?

Yes. A USB drive is simply another separate destination, and no particular capacity is required by the support instructions. Safely eject it after copying and retain a second local copy if the drive is your only recovery location.

Why does a fix work for one character but not another?

Characters can have different mod histories and can reside in different save areas. A character created without the fix may not reflect its changes, while a modded character may be unavailable when the launcher is running without the required mod; check the character’s save context and the fix’s stated scope.

Is a merged mod interchangeable with the original mods for online play?

No. Arc’s merge guidance says a merged mod receives its own identifier, so two players with independently merged copies are not necessarily using the same mod identity. Multiplayer participants should follow the author’s distribution and matching instructions rather than exchanging ad-hoc merged files.
