On a Galaxy S24, S24+, or S24 Ultra, install an available update from Settings > Software update > Download and install. If Samsung or your carrier has released software for your exact model and region, the phone will offer the download and installation steps. Depending on the carrier, model, and installed software, the button may instead say Check for system updates, Check for software updates, Download now, or Install now.

Connect to Wi‑Fi when possible, charge the phone sufficiently, and start only when you can be without the device. During installation, the phone and its files are inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—cannot be made. There is no single “latest version” shared by every S24 phone: availability depends on the exact variant, country, carrier, and rollout stage.

How do I install the latest Galaxy S24 software update?

The normal on-device route takes only a few taps. Use the following procedure on a Galaxy S24, S24+, or S24 Ultra.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the phone. Connect to Wi‑Fi if available and make sure the battery has sufficient charge. Some carriers require Wi‑Fi to check for or install an update.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap Software update.
  4. Tap Download and install. The phone checks Samsung’s update service and your carrier’s release status for that device. If your screen uses a different label, tap the available check or download button, such as Check for system updates, Check for software updates, Download now, or Install now.
  5. Read the on-screen information and approve the installation. Keep the phone connected to power or otherwise charged while it works.
  6. Wait for the restart. The phone may restart automatically, and it cannot be used while installation is running.

Samsung states that available screens and settings can vary by wireless provider, software version, and model. Therefore, a slightly different button name or layout does not necessarily indicate a problem.

What should I do before downloading an update?

A short preparation check prevents the most common interruptions. Samsung’s guidance specifically calls out network access, battery level, and storage.

Use Wi‑Fi when possible

Connect the S24 to a reliable Wi‑Fi network before opening the update screen. Carrier rules differ: some networks require Wi‑Fi for the check itself, while others may require it for the download or installation. If the update screen will not proceed over mobile data, connect to Wi‑Fi and try again.

Make sure the phone has enough charge

Begin with sufficient battery, as Samsung recommends. An update can restart the phone and leave it unavailable for a period of time, so do not start immediately before a call, travel, a work shift, or another situation in which you need the phone.

Check available storage

If the download reports that there is not enough space, use the storage-management options shown by the phone to remove or move enough data for the requested amount. The required space can differ by update, so use the figure displayed on your S24 rather than relying on a universal number.

Plan for a complete interruption

During installation, the device cannot be used and files are inaccessible. Calls, including emergency calls, cannot be made during that process. Wait until you have an alternative way to reach someone if necessary.

What do the different update button labels mean?

Samsung and carriers do not always use the same wording. These labels generally describe the same sequence: check availability, download the package, and install it.

Label you may see What to do When it commonly appears
Download and install Tap it to check, download, and proceed through the installation prompts. Standard wording in the Settings update menu.
Check for system updates Tap it to perform the availability check, then follow the offered download or install action. Some carrier or software variants.
Check for software updates Tap it and use the next button presented by the phone. Alternative wording on certain builds.
Download now Tap it to retrieve the update package, then approve installation when prompted. When an update has already been identified.
Install now Tap it to begin installation of a package already downloaded. When the download completed earlier.

If none of these labels appears, stay in Settings > Software update and read the available options rather than selecting an unrelated system menu.

How do I know which software is installed?

After the update finishes—or at any time before it—open Settings > About phone > Software information. This page identifies the installed software details for your particular S24. The update page may also show update history or release notes, depending on the model and software version.

Use the software-information page when contacting a carrier or Samsung support. Report the exact model and software details shown there; “Galaxy S24” alone does not identify every regional or carrier variant.

Why is the latest Galaxy S24 update not showing up?

An update can be available for one S24 variant while another still reports that no update is available. Samsung says release timing depends on the carrier, model, software version, and rollout schedule. Recently released packages can be distributed in waves rather than to every compatible phone at once.

The carrier has not released it for your variant

Carriers develop, test, and distribute software for devices sold through their networks. Check the support page for the original carrier and the exact model listed in About phone. A phone purchased from one carrier can remain tied to that carrier’s update channel even after it is used with another SIM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone is factory-unlocked

Factory-unlocked software can be delayed while compatibility with carriers is tested. Samsung also notes that a carrier SIM may be required in some circumstances. If your unlocked S24 is not receiving an update, insert the relevant carrier SIM when appropriate, connect to Wi‑Fi, and check again.

The rollout is staged

A release announcement does not mean every device receives the package simultaneously. If the phone says no update is available, wait and check again later while connected to Wi‑Fi. Avoid treating another owner’s build number or screenshot as proof that your own phone should already have the same package.

The device is checking under a different software state

Carrier branding, the original sales region, and the installed software version affect the update screen. Confirm the model and software information, then use the original carrier’s device-specific release information for a meaningful comparison.

What should I do if the update download fails?

Work through these fixes in order, using the message shown by the phone to choose the relevant branch.

If the phone says there is not enough storage

  1. Note the amount of free space the update screen requests.
  2. Use the phone’s storage tools to remove or move enough files to meet that request.
  3. Return to Settings > Software update > Download and install and run the check again.

Do not assume that deleting a particular app or a fixed number of gigabytes will always be enough; the update screen’s requirement is the applicable value for that package.

If the download was interrupted

Look for the update notification. Samsung says an interrupted download can be resumed from that notification. If it is no longer visible, reopen the software-update menu and check whether the phone offers a resume, download, or retry action.

If Wi‑Fi is the obstacle

Reconnect to a stable Wi‑Fi network and repeat the check. A carrier may block checking or installation over mobile data, so switching networks can resolve a message that appears to indicate that no update exists.

If the update continues to fail

Use Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac as an alternate route. Install Smart Switch on the computer, connect the S24 by USB, and follow the update prompt if the program offers one. Smart Switch is a fallback, not a requirement for the normal Settings-based installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the phone while the update installs?

No. Samsung’s update guidance warns that the device cannot be used and files are inaccessible during the update process. Calls—including emergency calls—are unavailable during that interruption. The phone may restart, and regional guidance also notes that it can restart several times while installation completes.

Leave the phone undisturbed until the lock screen or normal home screen returns. Do not judge the result by the first reboot alone; wait for the complete installation sequence and then unlock the phone normally.

What is the difference between updating on the phone and using Smart Switch?

Updating from Settings is the default path because it needs only the phone, a suitable network connection, and enough charge. Smart Switch is useful when the on-device process cannot complete or when Samsung’s computer software presents an available update after a USB connection.

Consideration On-device update Smart Switch on a computer
Where it runs Settings > Software update > Download and install on the S24. Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac with the phone connected by USB.
Best use Normal installation when the carrier has made the package available. Fallback when the phone’s download or installation path repeatedly fails.
What you need Wi‑Fi when required by the carrier, sufficient battery, and available storage. A compatible computer, USB connection, and Smart Switch installed.
Availability Controlled by the exact model, region, carrier, and rollout stage. Still dependent on whether Samsung and the carrier make an update available for that device.

Using a computer does not bypass carrier eligibility. If Smart Switch shows no update, the phone may still be waiting for the carrier’s release or staged rollout.

How do carrier-branded and unlocked S24 phones differ for updates?

The practical difference is the update channel, not the basic Settings path. Both carrier-branded and unlocked phones use the software-update menu, but the carrier controls when its approved package is distributed. A carrier-branded phone generally checks against the carrier associated with its software. An unlocked phone can also experience a delay while carrier compatibility is tested.

Because the original sales channel matters, identify the carrier that first sold the phone rather than only the network currently used. If Samsung’s update screen requests or depends on a carrier SIM, follow that requirement before repeating the check.

How can I verify that an update is really the newest one for my phone?

There is no universal S24 build that can be called the newest for every owner. The authoritative answer for your handset is the result shown in its own update menu, combined with release information for the exact model and original carrier.

  1. Open Settings > About phone > Software information and record the model and installed software details.
  2. Open Settings > Software update > Download and install and run the check.
  3. If no update appears, compare the model-specific information from the original carrier rather than a different region or carrier.
  4. Recheck later if the package was recently announced, because staged distribution can delay availability.

Samsung’s compatibility guidance includes the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra among devices covered by its One UI 7 update information. That compatibility listing does not establish that One UI 7—or any other named release—is the newest software for every S24 in October 2026.

What if the phone restarts but the update still seems incomplete?

Allow the complete restart sequence to finish before opening Settings. Once the phone is responsive, return to Settings > About phone > Software information to review the installed details, and check the update page for update history or release notes if those options are shown.

If the old software information remains and the update page offers the same package again, retry over Wi‑Fi with sufficient storage. If repeated attempts fail, use the Smart Switch fallback described above or contact the original carrier with the exact model and software details.

Should I keep automatic update options enabled?

Some Galaxy software versions expose an automatic-download option in the update menu, while others present different controls. If your phone offers automatic downloading, read the setting’s description and choose whether downloads should occur automatically. Automatic availability does not remove the need to plan for the installation interruption: the phone still cannot be used while the update is applied.

What information should I provide when asking for help?

Support can diagnose a missing or failed update more accurately when you provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact model shown under Settings > About phone.
  • The software details shown under About phone > Software information.
  • The original carrier or sales channel, including whether the phone is factory-unlocked.
  • Your country or region.
  • The exact message displayed by the update screen, such as insufficient storage, interrupted download, or no update available.
  • Whether the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi and whether a carrier SIM is inserted when required.

These details distinguish a normal staged rollout from a storage, network, compatibility, or installation failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the original carrier SIM to update a Galaxy S24?

Not in every case, but Samsung says a carrier SIM may be required in some circumstances. This is most relevant when an unlocked phone is being checked against a carrier’s update channel; use the original carrier’s guidance for the exact model.

Can a Galaxy S24 update be installed over mobile data?

It depends on the carrier and software version. Some carriers require Wi‑Fi to check for or install an update, so connect to Wi‑Fi if the phone will not proceed over mobile data.

Why does my Galaxy S24 restart more than once during an update?

Samsung regional guidance notes that a device may restart several times during installation. Leave it connected and wait until the normal lock or home screen returns before deciding that the process failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I return to the previous software after updating?

Samsung India’s guidance says its enhanced security policy prevents downgrading after an update. Because that guidance is regional, do not assume that a downgrade is supported on your phone; verify the policy for your model and market before installing.
