Minecraft shaders change the way Java Edition renders lighting, shadows, water, clouds, reflections, and atmospheric effects. The most straightforward way to use them is Iris, which loads shader packs and installs Sodium automatically through its official installer.
This guide covers the official Iris installer, manual Fabric and NeoForge setups, shader-pack installation, Windows/macOS/Linux folder locations, and the fixes for packs that do not appear or crash.

- Shaders work with Minecraft: Java Edition. Iris does not run on Bedrock Edition, consoles, phones, or tablets.
- Iris is a shader loader, not a shader pack. You still need to download a pack such as Complementary, BSL, or another Iris-compatible pack.
- Iris supports Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer. The exact Iris build must match your Minecraft version.
- Iris officially supports Fabric and NeoForge on supported versions. It does not support Forge.
Shader packs use considerably more GPU power than vanilla Minecraft. A pack that runs well on one computer may require a lower preset or shorter render distance on another.
Method 1: Install Iris with the official installer
This is the easiest method for a normal, unmodded Minecraft installation. The official Iris installer installs Iris and Sodium together, so you do not need to download Sodium separately.

- Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the official Iris download page.
- Download the Windows
.exeinstaller, or download the universal.jarinstaller if you are using macOS, Linux, or prefer Java. - Run the downloaded installer. If you use the universal installer, open it with Java rather than extracting it with an archive utility.
- Select the Minecraft version you want to use.
- Click Install.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the new Iris installation from the installation/profile list.
- Click Play once to confirm that the Iris profile starts successfully.
If your version is not listed, check that you are using a supported release. Iris’s installer may omit older versions when a newer compatible release can connect to servers running that version.
Method 2: Install Iris manually with Fabric
Use this method if you already manage a modded instance or want Iris alongside other Fabric mods. You need the matching Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, Iris, and Sodium.

- Install Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version.
- Download the matching Iris and Sodium files from a reputable source such as Modrinth. Do not mix files made for different Minecraft versions.
- Open the
modsfolder for the instance that will run Fabric. - Move the Iris and Sodium
.jarfiles into that folder. Do not put them inshaderpacks. - Launch the Fabric profile from the Minecraft Launcher or your third-party launcher.
Fabric Loader and Fabric API are separate. Fabric Loader is what loads mods; Fabric API provides commonly used mod APIs. Iris itself does not make Fabric API universally mandatory, but other mods in your instance may require it.
For older installations using Sodium 0.5.x on Minecraft 1.20 or earlier, Indium can be required by some other Fabric mods. Indium is not needed with Sodium 0.6.x, and Iris advises against using Indium with Iris/Sodium on Minecraft 1.21.1 and newer.
Method 3: Install Iris with NeoForge
Iris officially supports NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 and newer where a compatible build is available.

- Install NeoForge for the exact Minecraft version you intend to launch.
- Download a compatible Iris build and the required matching Sodium build.
- Place the mod files in that NeoForge installation’s
modsfolder. - Launch the NeoForge profile and verify that the main menu loads.
Do not use this procedure with old Forge profiles. Iris does not support Forge. For older Forge versions, Oculus is a separate, unofficial alternative; it is not an Iris installation and should be checked for compatibility independently.

The shader pack must go into the folder used by the specific Minecraft instance you launch. The default locations are:

| Linux | ~/.minecraft |
Third-party launchers often use a different instance directory. In that case, use the launcher’s instance or folder-management option instead of assuming that .minecraft is correct.
On Windows, press Win + R, enter %APPDATA%.minecraft, and press Enter. On macOS, in Finder select Go → Go to Folder, then enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. On Linux, enable hidden files in your file manager with Ctrl + H, then open ~/.minecraft.
Download and install a shader pack
- Download a shader pack from its official project page or a trusted mod repository. The usual download is a
.zipfile. - Do not place the file in
resourcepacks. Shader packs belong inshaderpacks. - Open your Minecraft instance folder and look for
shaderpacks. - If it does not exist, create a folder named exactly
shaderpacks. - Move the shader-pack
.zipinto that folder. - Launch the Iris profile and enter a world or the main video settings.
- Open the Iris shader screen. By default, the
Okey opens it in-game. You can also use Options → Video Settings → Shaders where that menu is exposed. - Select the pack and wait while Iris compiles its shaders.
The resulting structure should look like this:

└── YourShaderPack.zipYou can also drag a pack into Iris’s in-game shader-pack screen when that interface provides a drop area. Keeping the original ZIP is the safest default. Correctly structured extracted shader-pack directories can also be recognized, but extracting a pack into an extra nested folder commonly prevents detection.

Change shader settings
After selecting a pack, use its Shader Options… button to adjust effects such as shadow quality, volumetric lighting, reflections, clouds, and ambient occlusion. Start with the pack’s Low or Medium preset if performance is poor.
Improve performance after enabling shaders
- Reduce Render Distance and Simulation Distance in Options → Video Settings.
- Choose a lower shader preset or disable expensive effects such as volumetric clouds, reflections, and high-resolution shadows.
- Lower the shader’s shadow resolution if that option is available.
- Keep Sodium installed and avoid running unnecessary visual mods at the same time.
- Update your graphics driver, especially if Sodium reports an OpenGL or rendering failure.
Shader performance is often limited by the GPU, while render distance can also increase CPU and memory load. Lowering only Minecraft’s graphics quality may not be enough; the shader pack’s own options usually have the largest effect.
Fix common shader problems
The Shaders option is missing
You probably launched vanilla Minecraft or selected the wrong profile. Confirm that the launcher is using the Iris, Fabric, or NeoForge installation containing Iris. Vanilla Minecraft does not provide Iris’s shader-pack menu.
The shader pack does not appear
- Confirm that the file is in the current instance’s
shaderpacksfolder, not another Minecraft installation. - Check the folder spelling: it must be
shaderpacks, notshaderpackorresourcepacks. - Make sure the download is actually a shader pack. A resource pack, mod, or web-page file will not appear.
- Keep the pack as a ZIP unless its extracted folder has the correct internal structure.
- Close and reopen the shader menu after copying the file.
The game crashes when Iris starts
Check the Minecraft, Iris, Sodium, and loader versions as a group. Remove incompatible rendering mods, particularly OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan rendering mods; these should not be installed alongside Iris. Update the graphics driver and test with only Iris and Sodium in a clean instance.
A pack loads but looks broken
Iris supports many OptiFine-format packs, but OptiFine compatibility is not a guarantee that every pack works on every GPU or renderer. Try another current pack and check the shader developer’s compatibility notes. A failure affecting one pack should generally be reported to that pack’s developer; an Iris loading problem belongs with Iris support.

Other visual mods stop working
Nvidium disables itself while shaders are enabled. Voxy and Distant Horizons require shader packs that explicitly support them. Resource packs that use Minecraft core shaders also do not work while an Iris shader pack is active. These behaviors do not necessarily indicate a damaged installation.
How to remove Iris or switch back to vanilla
Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the vanilla installation, and launch it. To remove the modded profile entirely, delete the Iris installation from the launcher or remove Iris and Sodium from the relevant instance’s mods folder. Your shader ZIP files can remain in shaderpacks; they do nothing when Iris or another shader-capable loader is not active.

Do I need OptiFine to install Minecraft shaders?
No. Iris loads many OptiFine-format shader packs without OptiFine. Iris is a separate shader loader and is usually the preferred route for Fabric and supported NeoForge installations.
Does Iris install Sodium automatically?
Yes, when you use the official Iris installer. If you install Iris manually through Modrinth, CurseForge, or a mod-loader instance, you must also install the matching Sodium file.
Can I use Iris on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
No. Iris is for Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock uses a different rendering and add-on system.

Can Iris run on Forge?
No. Official Iris support covers Fabric and supported NeoForge versions, not Forge. Oculus is a separate unofficial Forge alternative for some older versions.

Where do shader packs go?
Place the shader-pack ZIP in the active instance’s shaderpacks folder, for example .minecraft/shaderpacks/. Do not put it in resourcepacks.
Why does my shader pack not show up?
The most common causes are using the wrong instance folder, misspelling shaderpacks, downloading something that is not a shader pack, or failing to reopen the shader menu after copying the file.
Do I need Indium with Iris and Sodium?
Not generally. Indium is no longer needed with Sodium 0.6.x, and Iris says not to use it with Iris/Sodium on Minecraft 1.21.1 and newer. Older Sodium 0.5.x setups may need it for compatibility with particular Fabric mods.
The Bottom Line
For most Java Edition players, install Iris from the official installer, launch the generated Iris profile, place a shader-pack ZIP in the active instance’s shaderpacks folder, and select it from the Iris shader menu. Match every component to the Minecraft version, avoid OptiFine and other incompatible rendering mods, and lower the shader preset or render distance if performance drops.
