To install mods in Minecraft: Java Edition, choose a loader that the mods support, install that loader for the Minecraft version you plan to play, add compatible mod files to the correct mods folder, and start the loader’s profile in the Minecraft Launcher. The steps below cover Fabric and the official launcher; they are not interchangeable with installation steps for other loaders. If the game crashes after you press Play, first test a clean installation of the same Minecraft version, then isolate the original installation’s mods or settings.
What do you need before installing Minecraft mods?
You need Minecraft: Java Edition, a mod loader supported by the mods you want to use, and mod files built for the same game version and loader. A mod for a different Minecraft version—or one made for another loader—may fail to load even if it is also described as a Minecraft mod.
This guide uses Fabric because the installation instructions covered here are for Fabric. Fabric is not a universal step that makes every mod work: check the requirements on each mod’s own listing before downloading it. The Fabric player guide warns that a mod that works with one Minecraft version may not work with another, and that mods made for other loaders are not interchangeable with Fabric mods.
- Game edition: Use Java Edition. Do not assume a Java mod will work with a different edition.
- Minecraft version: Match the mod’s stated version to the game version you intend to launch.
- Loader: Confirm that the mod is for Fabric if you plan to use the Fabric instructions below.
- Dependencies: Check whether the mod requires libraries or other mods. The Fabric installation wiki says most Fabric mods require Fabric API, but follow each mod’s own dependency instructions rather than assuming every file needs the same set.
- World backup: Back up important worlds before changing a modded setup. This is a prudent precaution, not a guarantee that a world will remain compatible if you later remove or change mods.
There is no single loader choice that is best for every player. Choose based on the loader and Minecraft version required by the specific mods you want. The Fabric procedure below should not be treated as current installation guidance for Forge or NeoForge.

How much does a basic Fabric setup cost?
The workflow described here uses downloadable software: the Fabric loader, mod files, any required software libraries, and the Minecraft Launcher. The cited instructions do not identify a physical accessory or product that you need to buy. Your existing Java Edition installation and computer still need to meet Minecraft’s requirements, and individual mod authors may publish their own usage terms, so check the specific listing rather than assuming every mod has identical requirements.
How do you choose a loader when several are available?
Start with the mods you actually want to use. Compare the loader named by each mod, the Minecraft versions it supports, its dependency list, and the launcher workflow it documents. If the set of mods requires Fabric, use Fabric; if it requires another loader, use that loader’s current instructions. Do not install Fabric simply because it is the first loader you encounter and then expect a mod built for another loader to work.
The official material covered here does not provide a substantive, current installation comparison for Forge or NeoForge. Their steps, profile names, and compatibility rules may differ. Treat a loader’s own documentation and every mod listing as the authority for that loader, and keep separate profiles or game directories when you need to test different setups.
How do you install Fabric mods in Minecraft Java Edition?
Install Fabric for the intended Minecraft version, put the compatible mod files and any required dependencies in that installation’s mods folder, and select the Fabric profile in the launcher. Use the mod’s listing to verify compatibility before starting the game.
1. Install Fabric for the Minecraft version you want
- Download the Fabric Installer from Fabric’s official site. Choose the Minecraft version you intend to play and install the Fabric loader for that version.
- For the Windows installer, Fabric’s Windows guide says to close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher before running the installer. Select the desired Minecraft version, leave Create Profile checked, and install.
- Fabric’s documentation says the installer creates a game version or profile for the launcher. The precise profile label can depend on the installation; look for the Fabric entry associated with the version you selected.
According to Fabric’s Windows guide, its .exe installer uses the Java bundled with the official Minecraft Launcher, so that installer does not require you to install a separate Java runtime. This note applies to that Windows installer workflow, not to every possible launcher or mod setup.
Close the game and launcher before installation so the installer can create or update the profile cleanly. If the installer displays several Minecraft versions, select the exact version that your intended mods list, not merely the newest version shown. A Fabric profile for one version does not make a mod compiled for another version compatible.

2. Check the mods and their dependencies
Before copying files, check each mod’s listing for the Minecraft version, Fabric loader, Java Edition, and any required dependencies. A file having a .jar extension does not by itself mean it is compatible with your game or loader. If a mod lists Fabric API or another library as a requirement, obtain the compatible dependency as well.
Read the dependency notes for every file, including libraries that may not add a visible in-game feature. The Fabric installation wiki says most Fabric mods require Fabric API, but that is a general expectation, not permission to use an arbitrary API version. Match the API and other libraries to the Minecraft version and loader version specified by the mod.

Fabric warns that mods are independently developed software. Download only files from sources you trust, and take the same care you would with other software obtained from third parties. Avoid repackaging, renaming, or editing a downloaded .jar unless the mod author specifically instructs you to do so.
3. Find the Minecraft mods folder
Fabric lists these usual locations for the Minecraft mods folder:
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If the mods folder is not there, create a folder with that exact name in the relevant Minecraft directory. Make sure you are using the directory for the installation you plan to launch. A custom game directory can mean that the active profile uses a different location from the usual one.
In the launcher, inspect the selected installation’s game-directory setting if one is available. The important point is that the folder and the Fabric profile must refer to the same Minecraft directory. Placing files in the default .minecraft folder will not help if the profile is configured to use a separate directory.
4. Add the mod files and launch Fabric
- Move the downloaded mod
.jarfiles and any required dependency.jarfiles into the correctmodsfolder. Keep the files as downloaded; do not place them inside an additional nested folder. - Open the Minecraft Launcher and choose the Fabric profile, not the standard game profile.
- Confirm that the selected profile uses the Minecraft version you checked against the mods, then press Play.
If the game starts but a mod’s feature is missing, verify the selected profile, the folder used by that profile, and the requirements for every mod before changing anything else. A successful launch only proves that the current set can start; it does not prove that every mod is active or that a feature was configured correctly.
5. Add changes in a controlled order
For a first setup, begin with Fabric and the required API or library files, then add the remaining mods in small groups or individually. Keep a record of the filenames and versions you add. If the game later stops launching, you can remove the newest change first instead of guessing among a large collection of files.
Back up important worlds before opening them with a changed mod set. Removing a mod can affect blocks, items, entities, or other data that a world previously used. A backup lets you return to the earlier setup if a world no longer behaves as expected.
Why does Minecraft crash when you press Play?
A crash can come from a mod, a dependency, an incompatible game version or loader, or an advanced installation setting. Minecraft Help recommends testing a new Java Edition installation using the same game version as the installation or world that crashes; if the clean installation starts, investigate the original setup.

Test a clean installation first
- In the Minecraft Launcher, create a new Java Edition installation using the same Minecraft game version as the installation that crashes.
- Start that clean installation without adding the original setup’s mods or changing its advanced settings.
- If the clean installation also crashes, the problem is not isolated to the original mod files. Continue troubleshooting the game or computer rather than assuming a particular mod is responsible.
- If the clean installation starts, focus on the original installation’s mods and settings. Minecraft Help specifically identifies resolution and JVM arguments as settings to compare.
Use the same game version in the test. Testing a different version can introduce a second variable and make the result misleading. Likewise, keep the clean profile separate from the original one so that its directory, files, and settings remain easy to compare.
Keep the original installation intact while testing. Change one variable at a time—for example, remove one recently added mod, test, and then move to the next change—so you can identify what affects the result. This isolation method is a practical troubleshooting approach; it cannot guarantee that every mod conflict will be easy to reproduce.

If you expected a modded game but the launch behaves like vanilla Minecraft, first make sure the launcher is using the Fabric profile. Then confirm that the mod files are in the mods folder for the installation that profile uses. Having the files in the usual folder is not enough if the profile points to a different game directory.
Also check that you did not install Fabric for one version and select a profile for another. The loader profile, game version, directory, and mod files must form one consistent set. Reopen the installation details and compare those values before deleting or reinstalling anything.
Check version, loader, and dependencies when a mod fails to load
- Compare the mod’s Minecraft version requirement with the selected installation’s game version.
- Check that the mod is made for Fabric rather than another loader.
- Confirm that the listing identifies Java Edition compatibility.
- Install any required libraries, including Fabric API when the mod’s instructions call for it.
- Check whether a dependency itself has a version requirement or requires another library.
- If the problem began after adding or updating a file, remove recently added files one at a time and test again to help isolate a conflict.
There is no universal diagnosis for every mod or launcher combination. If the basic checks do not identify the issue, use the mod’s own instructions and compatibility information rather than assuming that all Fabric mods behave alike. A mod that worked on one Minecraft version might not work after a game update, even when the loader profile still opens normally.
When the launcher opens but Play fails immediately
First separate a launcher-profile problem from a mod problem. Run the clean, same-version installation described above. If it works, compare the original profile’s mod files, resolution, JVM arguments, and game directory. Restore the original settings after each test when they are not the variable under examination.

If the clean profile fails too, check system updates, Java Edition requirements, and graphics drivers before repeatedly reinstalling mods. A failure shared by both profiles points away from one particular mod, although it does not identify the computer or launcher cause by itself.
How do you troubleshoot Minecraft performance or graphics problems?
For slow performance or graphics trouble, check system updates, Java Edition’s minimum requirements, and graphics drivers; then test whether disabling or removing active mods changes the symptoms. Minecraft Help’s general performance guidance does not explain every launcher error, so use these checks for performance and graphics problems rather than as a universal crash fix.

- Install available operating-system updates.
- Check that the computer meets the requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Update the graphics drivers using the appropriate source for your computer or graphics hardware.
- Disable or remove active mods temporarily and test whether performance or graphics improve. If they do, reintroduce changes individually to narrow down what affects the problem.
Keep track of the settings and files you change. That makes it easier to restore the setup if a test does not help, and avoids confusing a graphics-driver issue with a mod-related change. Test the same world, video settings, and profile where practical so that the comparison measures the effect of the mod change rather than an unrelated change.

No. Minecraft Help describes mods as third-party software that Mojang Studios does not create, review, or endorse, and says Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod use because modding is not officially supported.
“These mods are not created, reviewed or endorsed by Mojang Studios, and the same precautions should be taken when installing them as you would with any other piece of independently developed software.”
This is the statement in Minecraft Help’s article “Mods for Minecraft: Java Edition”; no individual speaker is named. The warning is a reason to use trusted sources and keep backups of important worlds, not a claim that every mod is harmful.
Because mods are independently developed, their installation pages, dependency lists, and supported versions can change. Check the current instructions when you update Minecraft or a mod. If a support representative asks you to reproduce a problem without mods, use a clean same-version installation so you can clearly determine whether the issue remains.

Use the order below to avoid changing several parts of a modded installation at once:
- It launches without the intended mods: confirm that you selected Fabric and that the profile points to the directory containing the mod files.
- A mod fails to load: recheck Minecraft version, loader, edition, and the mod’s dependency list.
- Play crashes: test a clean installation on the same Minecraft version, then compare the original installation’s mods, resolution, and JVM arguments.
- Performance or graphics are poor: check updates, requirements, and drivers, then test with mods disabled.
- You are using Forge or NeoForge: do not follow Fabric’s installer steps as if they were interchangeable. Use the loader and mod’s own instructions.
- You changed several files at once: restore the last known-good set and add changes one at a time.
- A world is important: make a backup before changing or removing mods, then test with a copy where possible.
Fabric’s “Installing Mods,” “Installing Fabric on Windows,” and “Installing Fabric” documentation provide the Fabric workflow. Where do Minecraft mods go?
For the usual Fabric locations, use %appdata%.minecraftmods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods on macOS, or ~/.minecraft/mods on Linux. If the launcher profile uses a custom game directory, use that directory’s mods folder instead.
Can I install several Fabric mods at once?
