What MMC 3.0 does
Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a host for administrative tools, called consoles, that manage Windows hardware, software, and network components. The console framework itself does not provide every management function: individual snap-ins supply those functions. Microsoft describes MMC as a platform for creating and hosting applications that manage Windows environments. See Microsoft’s MMC documentation.
Check whether you need the standalone update
KB907265 applies to original Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1. Windows Server 2003 R2 already includes MMC 3.0, so do not install the standalone update just to obtain MMC 3.0 on an R2 system. The archived package pages identify the standalone update as released on 13 March 2006.
Choose the correct KB907265 package
Match the installer to the server’s architecture. Do not use an x86 package on an x64 or Itanium installation. Microsoft’s original download pages are retired; the linked archive pages are snapshots that identify the original files as deleted from microsoft.com.

Check prerequisites
- Windows Server 2003 SP1: Required for the standalone KB907265 update.
- .NET Framework 2.0.50727: Install this when you need managed MMC 3.0 snap-ins. The KB summary says it is not required if you use only MMC 2.0-or-earlier snap-ins.
Install MMC 3.0
- Confirm that the server runs original Windows Server 2003 SP1 rather than R2, and identify whether it is x86, x64, or Itanium.
- Obtain the matching KB907265 executable from the corresponding archived package page. Because the original Microsoft download links are retired, verify the file’s source and integrity under your organization’s legacy-software policy.
- Close every open MMC window, including consoles such as Computer Management and Services.
- Launch the downloaded executable and follow the update wizard. The archived installation directions offer Run for immediate setup or Save to install later.
- After setup, open an administrative console to confirm it launches. To inspect the installed version or update, check the properties of
mmc.exeor the installed update list for KB907265.
Do you need to restart?
A restart is normally not required. The KB summary documents a restart only if MMC was running during installation; closing MMC before setup avoids that stated condition. If setup requests a restart, close any remaining MMC instances and rerun the update before accepting an unexpected reboot request.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The installer will not run
Confirm that Windows Server 2003 SP1 is installed and that you selected the package for the server’s architecture. The standalone update is not the route for an R2 system, which already includes MMC 3.0.

A managed snap-in will not load
Install .NET Framework version 2.0.50727 if the snap-in is managed. That prerequisite does not apply when using only MMC 2.0-or-earlier snap-ins.
Setup asks for a restart
Check that no MMC windows were open during installation. The documented restart condition is that MMC was running while the update was installed.

You cannot obtain the installer from Microsoft
The original Microsoft download pages have been retired, and the archived pages are snapshots. Before deploying an archived binary on a legacy server, follow your organization’s source and integrity checks. The cited documentation does not provide a current Microsoft-supported hash-verification procedure for these archived files.
