To install Magento (Adobe Commerce) on Ubuntu Linux with Apache and Cloudflare, first choose the exact Magento 2.4.x patch, then match its required PHP, database, search, queue, cache, Composer, and system-tool versions. Install Magento under an Apache virtual host whose document root is the pub directory, configure secure Magento URLs and an HTTPS certificate on the origin, and only then proxy the web records through Cloudflare. Set Cloudflare to Full (strict) when the origin certificate is valid and matches the hostname. This order prevents the most common failures: unsupported dependency combinations, Apache permission errors, 526 certificate errors, and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect loops.

The procedure below uses shop.example.com as the single origin hostname. Replace it with your real name and keep the selected patch and Ubuntu release visible in your change notes; Adobe’s compatibility tables are patch-specific, not a universal Magento matrix.

What do you need before installing Magento on Ubuntu?

You need a supported 64-bit Ubuntu server, root or delegated administrative access, a DNS name, enough persistent storage, and a dependency plan tied to one exact Magento or Adobe Commerce patch. Ubuntu is a supported Linux x86-64 platform, but Magento is not a single-package application: Apache, PHP and its extensions, a supported database, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch where applicable, RabbitMQ, Redis or Valkey, Composer, and operating-system utilities must all match the chosen release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Server access: use a non-root administrative account with sudo for routine work. Keep root available only for recovery.
  • Hostname: choose one canonical name such as shop.example.com. Use the same name in Magento base URLs, Apache’s virtual host, the certificate, and Cloudflare.
  • Resources: provide sufficient RAM and disk for the catalog, indexes, media, logs, and database growth. Adobe warns that an upgrade can require up to 2 GB of RAM; if the machine has less, create swap before running an upgrade.
  • Time and identity: set the correct hostname, synchronize time, and confirm that DNS will resolve to the origin before proxying traffic.
  • Network policy: allow SSH only from administration sources. Permit web traffic to the origin as required by your design; if you intend to accept HTTP/HTTPS only from Cloudflare, obtain Cloudflare’s current IP ranges before creating firewall rules.

Adobe lists command-line tools including bash, gzip, lsof, mysql, mysqldump, nice, php, sed, and tar. Install and verify them rather than assuming a minimal Ubuntu image contains everything.

Which PHP, database, and search versions should you use?

Use the compatibility table for the exact patch you selected, not a generic “Magento 2” guide. Adobe’s current tables show materially different combinations. For example, the following values apply to the cited patch examples and should not be generalized to every 2.4.x release.

Magento/Adobe Commerce patch example PHP versions shown by Adobe Composer Database options Search Queue and cache examples
2.4.8-p5 8.3 or 8.4 2.10 MariaDB 11.4 or 11.8 OpenSearch 3 RabbitMQ 4.3; Valkey 8.1
2.4.7-p10 8.2 or 8.3 Use the version listed for this patch Use the database choices listed for this patch Use the search choices listed for this patch Use the queue and cache versions listed for this patch

The second row deliberately does not fill in values that differ by release. Before installing packages, record the exact patch, Ubuntu release, PHP minor version, database engine and version, search service, RabbitMQ version, cache service, and Composer version from Adobe’s system-requirements matrix. A server that works for 2.4.8-p5 can be unsupported for 2.4.7-p10, even when the application code appears similar.

How do you prepare Ubuntu safely?

Start with a patched operating system and a recoverable administrative path. Run these commands as an administrative user with sudo; substitute your chosen hostname and avoid exposing secrets in shell history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update package metadata and installed packages.
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
  2. Create or confirm a non-root administrator. Add the account to the sudo group, test a separate SSH session, and keep the existing session open until the new path works.
  3. Set the hostname.
    sudo hostnamectl set-hostname shop.example.com
Ensure the name resolves consistently in local hosts configuration and public DNS.
  4. Enable time synchronization. Check the system’s time service and verify the clock is correct. TLS validation, scheduled jobs, sessions, and payment integrations can fail when time drifts.
  5. Check capacity. Review memory and disk before installing services. If RAM is below Adobe’s upgrade guidance, create and test swap before running Composer or an upgrade.
  6. Install required utilities. Confirm the Adobe-listed tools are present, and record their paths and versions for troubleshooting.

Do not point Cloudflare at the server yet. First build and test the origin locally or through a temporary DNS-only record so a Cloudflare setting cannot hide an Apache or certificate problem.

How do you install Magento’s exact dependency set?

Install only the versions allowed by the selected patch’s Adobe matrix. Package names vary by Ubuntu release, and PHP extensions differ between releases, so treat the following as a sequence rather than a universal one-line package list.

Install PHP and extensions

Install the matrix-approved PHP minor version and every required extension for that patch, including the command-line interface used by bin/magento. Verify both web-server and CLI PHP versions; Apache can load a different handler than the shell if multiple PHP versions are installed.

php -v
php -m
which php

Remove or disable an unintended PHP handler before enabling the selected one in Apache. A successful php -v check alone does not prove that Apache is executing the same version.

Install the database, search, queue, and cache services

Install the database engine and version, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch option, RabbitMQ, and Redis or Valkey version required by the patch. Enable each service at boot, start it, and verify local connectivity with its native client or health command. Keep these services on private interfaces unless your architecture explicitly requires remote access, and use dedicated credentials.

Install Composer and configure repository authentication

Install the Composer version specified for the patch. Magento packages are obtained from repo.magento.com; configure Composer authentication with credentials supplied by Adobe. Store the credentials in the account or secret-management location used by your deployment, never in a public tutorial, Git repository, shell transcript, or world-readable file.

How do you install and configure Apache for Magento?

Adobe’s Ubuntu procedure uses apt-get to install or upgrade apache2. Use a supported Apache 2.4 release, then enable the modules and PHP integration required by your selected Commerce release.

  1. Update package information and install Apache:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install apache2
  2. Confirm the running version and service state:
    apache2 -v
    sudo systemctl status apache2
  3. Enable the required modules, such as URL rewriting and the PHP handler specified by the release documentation. Do not copy a module list from another Magento patch without checking compatibility.
  4. Create a dedicated virtual-host file for shop.example.com. Set its DocumentRoot to the Magento pub directory, not the project root. This prevents direct exposure of application files.
  5. Allow .htaccess overrides only where the official Magento Apache configuration requires them. Keep the scope limited to the Magento document root.
  6. Enable the site, disable the default site if it would answer the same hostname, test syntax, and reload Apache:
    sudo apachectl configtest
    sudo systemctl reload apache2

Magento needs controlled write access for generated code, cache, logs, and media. Grant the documented permissions to the Apache web-server user, keep application source and Composer credentials private, and place var, generated content, and media on persistent storage. Recheck ownership after deployments because copying files as root can recreate permission failures.

How do you create the Magento database and run setup:install?

Create a dedicated database and least-privilege database user rather than using an administrator account. Use the database engine and authentication syntax supported by the selected patch, then test the credentials from the Magento host before running the installer.

  1. Create the database with a UTF-8-compatible character set and a dedicated user. Record the database name, host, port, username, and password in your secret store.
  2. Test a local connection with the database client and verify that the account can create and modify Magento tables but cannot administer unrelated databases.
  3. Change to the Magento project directory and confirm that Composer dependencies are installed.
  4. Run bin/magento setup:install with the database options, administrator account, locale, currency, timezone, and canonical URLs for your deployment. Use secure values from the beginning, for example:
    bin/magento setup:install --base-url=https://shop.example.com/ --base-url-secure=https://shop.example.com/ --use-secure=1 --use-secure-admin=1
Add the database and admin options required by your release and environment; do not paste real passwords into shared logs.
  5. Save the generated Admin path and protect the administrator credentials with your normal password-management process.

Adobe requires --use-secure=1, an https:// secure base URL, and --use-secure-admin=1 when you want secure storefront and Admin access. If you initially install with HTTP values, correct Magento’s secure URL configuration and Apache before putting the site behind an HTTPS-enforcing proxy.

How do you add HTTPS to Apache before enabling Cloudflare?

HTTPS must work from Cloudflare to the origin and from the visitor to Cloudflare. Install origin TLS before selecting strict encryption mode. Adobe states that a valid security certificate is required for HTTPS.

Choose the certificate type

  • Publicly trusted certificate: use this when the origin may be reached directly, when you have non-Cloudflare monitoring, or when another proxy may connect to the server. It is trusted by ordinary clients without Cloudflare-specific assumptions.
  • Cloudflare Origin CA certificate: suitable when traffic remains proxied through Cloudflare. Cloudflare’s Origin CA certificate is not intended for visitors connecting directly to the origin; a direct browser connection can show an untrusted-certificate warning.

Enable the Apache HTTPS virtual host

  1. Install the certificate and private key with restrictive ownership and permissions. Confirm that the certificate includes shop.example.com and is unexpired.
  2. Configure an Apache virtual host listening on port 443 with the Magento pub document root, required rewrite rules, and the certificate paths.
  3. Keep the HTTP virtual host on port 80 only long enough to redirect the canonical hostname to HTTPS, unless a deliberate exception is required.
  4. Test Apache configuration and reload:
    sudo apachectl configtest
    sudo systemctl reload apache2
  5. From an external client, inspect the certificate name, chain, expiry, and HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior before changing Cloudflare’s mode.

How do you connect Magento to Cloudflare?

The request path should be visitor → Cloudflare → Apache → Magento. Cloudflare says a proxied DNS record returns Cloudflare anycast addresses instead of the origin address, so visitors do not receive the server’s public IP through normal DNS resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Cloudflare DNS, add the apex and shop records as A, AAAA, or CNAME records pointing to the origin. Use only addresses that actually serve the Apache site.
  2. Set the web records to Proxied. Cloudflare recommends proxying A, AAAA, and CNAME records that serve web traffic.
  3. Leave email records, mail hosts, and ownership-validation records DNS-only. Proxying those records can break mail delivery or validation.
  4. Wait for DNS changes to appear, then verify that the hostname resolves to Cloudflare addresses while the origin remains reachable for your administration and certificate checks.
  5. Restrict the origin firewall to SSH administration and the web access pattern you selected. If only Cloudflare should reach ports 80 and 443, download the current Cloudflare IP ranges from Cloudflare’s official list and keep the rules updated.

DNS-only web records bypass Cloudflare’s HTTP/HTTPS proxy protections and reveal the origin address. Use DNS-only temporarily for diagnostics only, and remember to switch the record back to Proxied after testing.

Which Cloudflare SSL/TLS mode should Magento use?

Select Full (strict) when Apache presents an unexpired certificate whose hostname matches the requested name. Cloudflare describes Full (strict) as the preferred mode whenever possible; it validates the origin certificate and prevents an invalid or mismatched certificate from being silently accepted.

Cloudflare mode Origin requirement Magento/Apache implication
Full (strict) Valid, unexpired, hostname-matching certificate from a publicly trusted CA or an accepted Origin CA certificate Use with secure Magento base URLs and Apache HTTPS on port 443
Full HTTPS on the origin, but Cloudflare does not validate the certificate May hide a certificate problem and leaves room for a malicious party to hijack the connection; use only as a temporary diagnostic choice
Flexible HTTP between Cloudflare and the origin Conflicts with an HTTPS Magento origin and commonly causes redirect loops; it is not a fix for a certificate or protocol mismatch

A 526 error means Cloudflare cannot validate the origin certificate for Full (strict). Check the certificate chain, expiry, hostname, private-key pairing, Apache’s 443 virtual host, and the certificate type before changing encryption mode.

Why do I get a redirect loop after enabling Cloudflare SSL?

Redirect loops occur when Magento, Apache, and Cloudflare disagree about whether the request is HTTPS. The reliable fix is to make all three layers use the same canonical HTTPS URL, not to downgrade the origin to Flexible mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Magento

Confirm that the unsecure and secure base URLs are intentional, that the secure base URL uses https://shop.example.com/, and that secure storefront and Admin settings are enabled. Clear Magento configuration and page caches after changing URL settings.

Check Apache

Verify that the HTTPS virtual host answers the canonical hostname and that the HTTP virtual host redirects only to the HTTPS URL. Check rewrite rules for a redirect that points back to HTTP or to a different hostname.

Check Cloudflare

Use Full (strict) when the origin certificate is valid. If Cloudflare is set to Flexible while Apache redirects every HTTP request to HTTPS, Cloudflare can repeatedly send HTTP to the origin and receive the same redirect. Correct the certificate and mode instead of adding competing redirect rules.

Check proxy awareness

Ensure the web stack preserves the original HTTPS indication from Cloudflare and does not force Magento to treat every proxied request as HTTP. Review Apache access and error logs together with Magento logs while making one change at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you verify a Magento installation behind Cloudflare?

Verification should cover the full request path, not just a successful homepage response. The documentation establishes configuration requirements; the following checks are operational tests you should run on your own server.

  • DNS: confirm the apex and shop records resolve as intended and that mail and validation records remain DNS-only.
  • TLS: inspect the public certificate name, chain, and expiry; separately test the origin certificate from an administrative network.
  • Redirects: request HTTP and HTTPS and confirm one canonical HTTPS destination without loops.
  • Storefront: browse category and product pages, test search, add an item to the cart, and confirm static assets load through the proxied hostname.
  • Admin: open the generated Admin path, sign in, and confirm the session remains secure.
  • Media and writes: upload an image or other permitted media asset and verify that generated files are readable by Apache.
  • Background work: run Magento cron, inspect indexer status, warm or flush caches deliberately, and verify queue consumers and search connectivity.
  • Integrations: test webhooks and email delivery from the real environment; DNS-only mail records are required for normal mail routing.
  • Logs: correlate Apache access/error logs, Magento logs, PHP errors, Cloudflare events, and origin firewall logs for 4xx and 5xx responses.

What are the common installation failures and fixes?

Composer reports an unsupported PHP or dependency version

Return to the exact patch matrix and compare the CLI PHP version, Composer version, and every locked package requirement. Remove an unintended PHP binary from the PATH or switch Apache and CLI to the matrix-approved minor release before rerunning Composer.

Apache shows a 403 or Magento returns a filesystem error

Check that the virtual host points to pub, Apache can traverse each parent directory, and the documented writable directories are owned by the web-server user. Recheck permissions after deployments performed by root or a different release account.

Magento’s static content is missing

Inspect Apache rewrite and alias behavior, confirm that generated static files exist, and review browser and Apache logs for incorrect base URLs. A mismatch between HTTP and HTTPS asset URLs can also be caused by incomplete secure URL configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloudflare returns 526

Full (strict) is rejecting the origin certificate. Verify hostname coverage, expiry, trust chain, private-key pairing, and that Apache serves the intended certificate on port 443. If you used Origin CA, confirm that the request is actually passing through Cloudflare and that no direct-origin client is expected to trust it.

Cloudflare shows a redirect loop

Compare Magento secure URLs, Apache redirects, and Cloudflare mode. Remove Flexible mode from an HTTPS origin, eliminate duplicate redirects, clear Magento caches, and retest from a clean browser session.

The origin is exposed despite proxying

Check for DNS-only web records, historical DNS data, direct links, or unrelated hostnames that resolve to the server. Proxy all web-serving records and restrict firewall access to the intended administration and Cloudflare source ranges.

Should you self-manage Magento on Ubuntu or use managed hosting?

The right deployment depends on whether your team can operate the exact patch’s operating system and service matrix. Self-management gives control over Apache, PHP, database, search, queue, cache, firewall, and upgrade timing. Managed Magento hosting shifts much of that operational work to a provider, but you must verify support for the exact Magento patch, Ubuntu image or equivalent platform, PHP minor version, database engine, search service, RabbitMQ, and cache service before signing up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Self-managed Ubuntu VPS Managed Magento hosting
Apache and OS control Full control over packages, virtual hosts, modules, firewall, and maintenance windows Constrained by the provider’s supported stack and change process
Dependency matching Your team installs and validates every version in Adobe’s patch matrix Provider may operate the services, but compatibility must be confirmed in writing
TLS choice Use a public CA certificate or Origin CA according to direct-origin requirements Provider may manage certificates; verify whether Cloudflare Full (strict) is supported
Operations burden You own backups, monitoring, patching, cron, queues, indexes, and incident response Some duties are outsourced, but scope, recovery targets, and access must be explicit
Cloudflare design You configure DNS proxying, firewall rules, and origin access policy Confirm how the provider handles proxied records, origin IPs, and support diagnostics

Do not choose on a generic “Magento-ready” label. Ask for the supported patch, PHP and Composer versions, database and search choices, queue and cache versions, Ubuntu image or operating-system policy, certificate handling, backup model, and who performs security updates.

How should you maintain the installation?

Keep a versioned record of the Magento patch and every service version. Before a patch upgrade, re-read Adobe’s current matrix, create a tested backup, verify swap and disk capacity, and rehearse the upgrade on a staging copy. Adobe’s warning that upgrades may need up to 2 GB of RAM is a capacity check, not a promise that every installation will fit in that amount.

  • Patch Ubuntu and Apache on a scheduled maintenance cycle.
  • Renew certificates before expiry and test the complete chain.
  • Rotate database, Admin, Composer, and integration credentials using your secret-management process.
  • Monitor cron, indexers, queue consumers, search health, database growth, disk space, PHP errors, Apache errors, and Cloudflare-origin failures.
  • Back up the database, media, configuration, and deployment metadata; regularly test restoration.
  • Review Cloudflare proxy and firewall rules after DNS or network changes, and keep any Cloudflare IP allowlist current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Cloudflare Origin CA certificate if I sometimes bypass Cloudflare?

No. Origin CA certificates are intended for Cloudflare-to-origin encryption and are not publicly trusted for ordinary direct connections. If monitoring, staff, partners, or emergency DNS changes may connect straight to the server, use a publicly trusted certificate instead.

How can I check which PHP version Apache is actually using?

Create a temporary, access-controlled diagnostic endpoint or inspect Apache’s enabled PHP handler and module configuration, then remove the diagnostic file. Comparing only php -v checks the CLI binary and may miss a different PHP version loaded by Apache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should be backed up before a Magento patch upgrade?

Back up the database, pub/media, environment and deployment configuration, Composer files, and any custom Apache or Cloudflare settings. Record the current service versions so you can reproduce the working dependency set during rollback.

Why should email DNS records stay DNS-only in Cloudflare?

Mail protocols do not use Cloudflare’s normal HTTP/HTTPS reverse proxy. Leaving MX records and mail-host records DNS-only lets mail servers connect to the designated mail service instead of receiving web-proxy addresses.
