You can install LineageOS safely only when your phone has an exact, supported device page and you follow that page in order. The process normally involves a complete backup, testing the stock phone, unlocking the bootloader (which normally wipes the device), flashing the matching Lineage Recovery, formatting data, and sideloading the correct LineageOS package. Commands, partition names, recovery files, firmware requirements, and unlock procedures vary by model, so a guide for a similar-looking phone is not safe to substitute.
This walkthrough explains the decisions and checks that prevent the most serious mistakes. It does not replace the installation page for your exact model.
What must I verify before installing LineageOS?
Verify the exact model, regional variant, and device codename on the official LineageOS device list, then open that model’s complete installation page. LineageOS instructions are device-specific: a different variant can use another partition layout, recovery image, firmware release, or bootloader process.

Identify the exact device
- Record the model number from the stock operating system’s About phone screen and from the label or original packaging.
- Match the codename and variant shown on the LineageOS page; do not rely on a commercial name alone.
- Check whether the page requires a particular stock firmware or vendor version. Install that firmware while the phone is still stock if the page says it is required.
- Read every section once before changing anything. Some pages contain model-specific steps that must happen after unlocking but before the first system boot.
A model being listed is only the start of the compatibility check. The page must match the device you actually own, and the listed instructions must fit its variant and current software state. Compare the page’s required firmware or vendor version with what is installed, and note any prerequisite that has to be completed before recovery or before the first boot. If the guide’s wording or your phone’s identity does not line up, pause and resolve that discrepancy before downloading files or entering commands.

Check whether unlocking is possible
Bootloader unlocking is controlled by the manufacturer. Some devices accept fastboot flashing unlock; others require an unlock token or code obtained through a manufacturer website or a Sony unlock-code procedure. A carrier or regional variant may prohibit unlocking even when another variant with the same marketing name is supported.
Unlocking can also destroy protected material. Some Sony instructions warn that DRM keys in the TA partition may be lost. If your model’s page identifies an irreversible loss, decide whether that trade-off is acceptable before proceeding.
When comparing possible phones, do not compare them only by processor or the fact that both appear under a similar retail name. Compare the unlock policy and whether you need a token or code; whether protected keys can be lost; the recovery image and target partition; firmware or vendor prerequisites; and the order for optional add-ons. These differences determine whether a set of instructions applies to your phone and how much preparation the installation requires.

LineageOS installation is not risk-free. The official guidance states: “Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will erase all data on your device!” It also says: “LineageOS is provided as-is with no warranty. While we attempt to verify everything works you are installing at your own risk!” Treat those warnings literally and keep a recovery plan for a phone that cannot boot.
The instructions are not a menu of interchangeable suggestions. The LineageOS Wiki says to read every section, follow every step precisely, and stop rather than continuing after a failure. For example, the Earth guide explicitly warns: “Warning: The provided instructions are for LineageOS 22.2. These will only work if you follow every section and step precisely.” A guide’s version label and exact sequence matter; do not transplant one command from an older or different-device page.
How do I back up my phone before unlocking?
Back up before the unlock command, not after it. Because unlocking performs a factory reset, assume everything stored only on the phone will be unrecoverable.
Make two independent copies
- Copy photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings, and exported project files to a computer.
- Make a second copy on an external drive or an online account. Open several files from each copy to confirm that they are readable.
- Export authenticator accounts, passkeys, recovery codes, and encrypted messaging backups using each app’s own instructions. A screenshot of an authenticator code is not a substitute for an export or recovery method.
- Record contacts, calendars, notes, Wi-Fi credentials, and any app data that cannot be restored from an account.
- Save purchase receipts, license keys, and configuration files needed to restore work after installation.
Do not assume an OEM’s proprietary backup archive can be restored on LineageOS. Keep ordinary files and app-specific exports in formats you can open without the original system. Check that your computer copy is complete before continuing.

If you use a computer and external storage, disconnecting one copy after confirming it is readable can also reduce the chance of accidentally overwriting both during later setup. The important check is practical, not just visual: open representative photos and documents from the backup destination and verify that the app-specific exports are present.

Prepare for account and security checks
- Remove Google accounts when the device guide instructs you to do so. This helps prevent factory-reset protection from blocking setup after the wipe.
- Know your screen-lock credentials and any manufacturer unlock-account credentials.
- Keep the phone charged and connect it directly to the computer during flashing.
Set aside the time to finish the sequence without rushing. The reset means you may need to set up the stock phone again briefly to re-enable USB debugging, and a separate firmware prerequisite or add-on may be required by the guide. Have the files for the matching device downloaded and easy to identify before unlocking, but do not assume that possessing a file makes it the right one: verify its link, model, and role against the device page.
How do I test the stock phone and computer connection?
Validate the hardware while the original operating system still works. This separates a pre-existing hardware problem from an installation problem.
Test essential functions
- Place and receive a call, send and receive SMS, and test mobile data.
- Test Wi-Fi calling or LTE calling if your carrier and phone support them.
- Check cameras, speakers, microphones, fingerprint or face unlock, charging, and any feature you depend on.
- Install current Android platform tools containing
adbandfastbooton the computer. - Enable Developer options and USB debugging. Enable OEM unlocking where the phone exposes that switch and the device page requires it.
Confirm ADB sees the stock phone
Connect with a known-good USB data cable, approve the debugging authorization prompt, and run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →adb devices
The phone should appear with an authorized state. If it does not, replace the cable, accept the prompt, verify USB mode, and reinstall the platform tools or the correct Windows driver before proceeding.
This is a useful checkpoint before any destructive action: it confirms that the computer, cable, and phone can communicate in Android’s debugging mode. Keep the terminal open or note which platform-tools installation you used, so you do not later run an outdated or different copy by accident. If the phone is not authorized, fix that first; an empty or unauthorized ADB listing is not a reason to move on to the unlock step.
What exactly happens when I unlock the bootloader?
The unlock step removes the bootloader’s lock and normally erases user data immediately. Follow only the command or token procedure printed on your model’s page; examples from another manufacturer or model can leave the phone unbootable.
Typical manufacturer-specific patterns
| Pattern | What you may need | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Fastboot command | A device in bootloader mode and a command such as fastboot flashing unlock, when the page specifies it |
Confirmation on the phone normally triggers the wipe |
| Unlock-token website | Device identifiers and a manufacturer account or approval | The token may be tied to one device and variant |
| Sony unlock-code flow | An eligibility check and a code entered through the documented procedure | Some models can lose DRM keys in the TA partition |
These are examples of different manufacturer policies, not alternative commands to try on one phone. The exact device page decides which route applies. Check whether the phone is eligible for unlocking and whether a code or token must be obtained before you begin. If the page warns about a protected partition or keys, treat that as a separate consequence from the expected wipe of user data; a backup does not restore keys the guide says may be lost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After the reset, complete the minimum stock setup, enable USB debugging again, and reconnect ADB if the device page says to do so. Do not proceed on the assumption that debugging survived the wipe.

Why does fastboot not detect my phone?
Use the device page’s exact transition to bootloader mode. Where specified, the command is:
adb -d reboot bootloader
Once the bootloader screen appears, run:
fastboot devices
A serial number indicates that the host can communicate with fastboot. An empty result or a command that hangs is a connection or driver problem, not a reason to try a different device guide.
Windows checks
- Open Device Manager and confirm the phone appears without a warning triangle.
- Install the driver specified by the device or manufacturer documentation; do not select a random driver package.
- Try a different USB data cable and a different port. A USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub can work better than a problematic USB 3.x path on some phones.
- Connect directly rather than through an unpowered hub, then restart the platform-tools terminal and run
fastboot devicesagain.
Linux and macOS checks
Confirm that the platform-tools directory is the one being used, check USB permissions on Linux, and avoid another process holding the device. On every operating system, if the device disappears intermittently, suspect the cable, port, hub, or phone connector before flashing.
The troubleshooting burden can differ by host. On Windows, the first visible check is Device Manager: the phone should appear without a warning triangle, and a driver may be needed. On Linux and macOS, confirm the intended platform-tools directory and, on Linux, USB permissions. In either case, test one connection change at a time—cable, port, or hub—then rerun fastboot devices. A USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub is worth trying on some devices when a USB 3.x connection is unreliable, but connector compatibility is phone-specific and the cable must carry data.
Which recovery and files should I flash?
Download only the recovery image and LineageOS ZIP linked by the exact device page. The page identifies whether recovery belongs in a boot, recovery, or another partition and supplies the matching command. Do not rename a file into a different model’s filename or use a recovery from an unofficial mirror.
Check each download by its purpose before using it: the recovery image is flashed to the named target, while the LineageOS ZIP is delivered to recovery through the documented sideload flow. If the guide specifies firmware or vendor software, that is a distinct prerequisite, not a substitute for either file. Likewise, add-ons such as Google Apps are separate packages, and their architecture and timing must match the device page. Keep these files clearly distinguishable so that the wrong package is not selected at a prompt.
Follow the required order
- Unlock the bootloader using the model-specific method and allow the expected wipe.
- Re-enable USB debugging after the reset if required, then return to bootloader mode.
- Flash the specified Lineage Recovery image to the exact target partition named by the guide.
- Boot directly into Lineage Recovery immediately after flashing. Do not allow the stock system to boot first if the page warns that it could replace recovery.
- On the recovery screen, choose Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset, and confirm.
- Return to the main recovery menu and select Apply Update followed by Apply from ADB.
- Run the documented sideload command, commonly using the device-specific form of
adb -d sideloadand the downloaded LineageOS ZIP filename. - Complete every remaining device-page step before selecting a system reboot.
The recovery screen should clearly identify Lineage Recovery before you format data or sideload. If a command fails, stop, record the exact error, and reread the corresponding section. The official guidance says to follow every section and step precisely; the Earth guide, for example, warns that its instructions are for LineageOS 22.2 and work only when every step is followed.
Be especially careful about the transition after flashing recovery. The guide may tell you to boot directly into recovery rather than letting Android start, because the next required operation is performed there. Formatting data is also an intentional step in the prescribed sequence, not an optional troubleshooting shortcut to run whenever something goes wrong. Follow the on-screen recovery choices and the page’s order exactly. If your screen or command output differs from the expected result, stop and compare it with the instructions before proceeding.

Interpret sideload messages correctly
A sideload progress display that pauses near 47% can still represent a successful installation on some device guides because the host and recovery report progress differently. A signature-verification failure is different: treat it as a potentially corrupted, incomplete, or unofficial image, redownload the file from the matching device page, and repeat the check rather than bypassing verification.
Do not judge success by a percentage alone. Read the recovery’s final status and the device page’s notes. A display near 47% may be normal for some guides, but that does not make every interrupted transfer successful. If recovery reports a signature problem, do not disable checks or try an unrelated ZIP; obtain a fresh copy linked from the correct device page and retry according to its steps.
When should I install Google Apps or another add-on?
Add-ons are optional. If you want Google Apps or another supported package, install the architecture-matched package from recovery before the first LineageOS boot and in the order specified on the device page. If you do not need an add-on, skip it.
- Use only a package intended for the same device architecture and LineageOS release.
- Do not boot LineageOS between installing the operating system and an add-on that the guide says must be installed first.
- Never borrow an add-on package or installation order from another phone’s page.
Make the decision before the first system boot. If you want Google Apps, check that the package supports the phone’s architecture and the installed LineageOS release, then install it from recovery in the sequence the device page specifies. If you do not want an add-on, there is no need to install one just because a different guide includes it. The key is not to boot the new system before a required add-on has been applied.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if installation fails?
Stop at the first failure. Repeating commands from memory or continuing after an error can overwrite the wrong partition or make diagnosis harder.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
- No ADB device: unlock the phone, approve the authorization prompt, check USB debugging, and replace the cable or port.
- No fastboot device: confirm bootloader mode, inspect Device Manager on Windows, install the specified driver, and try a USB Type-A 2.0 path.
- Wrong partition or file error: stop and compare the model codename, variant, filename, and partition target with the exact device page.
- Recovery will not boot: return to bootloader mode and reread whether the guide requires a special boot command or immediate key combination after flashing.
- Signature verification failure: redownload the official ZIP and verify that it is complete and intended for the device.
- Boot failure after an apparently complete install: do not repeatedly wipe or flash random files. Reopen the device page, check firmware and add-on requirements, and use only its recovery or restoration instructions.
Record the point where the process stopped, the command you ran, and the error shown on the host or recovery screen. That makes it easier to return to the matching section of the guide rather than restarting from an assumed point. If the failure involves detection, return to the host checks; if it involves a file or partition, verify the exact model and download; if recovery or system boot fails, consult the page’s device-specific recovery or restoration procedure. Do not improvise a command sequence from another model.
What is the safest installation checklist?
- Exact codename and variant matched.
- Complete device page read from start to finish.
- Two verified copies of irreplaceable data.
- Authenticator exports, recovery codes, and account credentials available.
- Stock calls, SMS, data, Wi-Fi calling, cameras, audio, and charging tested.
- Current platform tools installed; ADB and fastboot tested.
- Phone charged, USB data cable available, and required drivers installed.
- Google accounts removed when instructed; OEM unlocking and USB debugging enabled.
- Unlock consequences, including possible DRM-key loss, accepted.
- Matching recovery, LineageOS ZIP, firmware, and optional add-ons downloaded.
- Unlock, recovery flash, data format, sideload, add-on, and reboot steps kept in the page’s order.
Before entering the unlock procedure, make one final pass through the page and checklist. Confirm that you can identify the exact recovery file, target partition, next recovery screen, sideload ZIP, and any remaining steps after installation. If you cannot, wait rather than guessing. The safest installation is the one in which every irreversible consequence is understood and every next step comes from the matching device guide.

Will unlocking the bootloader erase everything?
Yes, expect the unlock to erase user data. Back up irreplaceable files and app-specific exports before unlocking, and do not rely on a backup archive that may require the original operating system.
How do I check whether my phone is compatible?
Find its exact model, variant, and codename in the official LineageOS device list, then read that device’s complete installation page. Check any firmware requirement and the page’s unlock method; instructions for a similar retail name or another variant are not interchangeable.
Why does fastboot show no device?
Verify that the phone is in bootloader mode and run the documented fastboot devices check. Try another data cable or port; on Windows, check Device Manager for a warning triangle and the specified driver. A USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub can help on some devices.

Is a sideload that stops near 47% a failure?
Not necessarily. Some device guides note that the host and recovery report progress differently, so a display near 47% can still indicate success. Check the final recovery status and the matching guide. Treat a signature-verification failure as a separate problem and redownload the correct package.
Will my phone number or SIM be erased by installing LineageOS?
The SIM itself is not wiped, but the phone’s local settings and eSIM profile can require special handling. Check your carrier’s eSIM reactivation process and keep account details available before unlocking.
How long should the first LineageOS boot take?
The first boot can take substantially longer than a normal restart while Android initializes the new system. If it remains on the boot animation far beyond the time indicated by the device guide, return to that guide instead of repeatedly forcing resets.
Can I return to the original Android software later?
Usually, but the restoration method, firmware package, and bootloader state are manufacturer- and model-specific. Keep the exact stock firmware and restoration instructions for your variant; do not assume a generic factory image is compatible.
The Bottom Line
Install LineageOS only by following the complete guide for your phone’s exact model, variant, and codename. Back up twice before unlocking, expect a wipe, test ADB and fastboot first, use only the linked recovery and ZIP, and stop at the first unexpected result. The device page—not a guide for a similar phone—sets the commands, files, and order.
