Install the Arlo SmartHub or compatible Base Station first, then add and sync each Ultra camera individually in the Arlo Secure app. Keep each camera 3–10 feet (1–3 meters) from the hub while pairing, and confirm live view before mounting it.
Check your camera and hub before setup
Arlo Ultra cameras require an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station; they do not set up as standalone direct-Wi-Fi cameras. Read the model numbers on your camera and hub, then check Arlo’s compatibility list before using existing equipment or buying a replacement. Compatibility depends on the camera generation and hub model.
For Ultra 3rd Gen, Arlo’s manual specifies SmartHub model VMB5000 or VMB4540. Do not assume that every Arlo Base Station supports every Ultra camera. Follow the manual for your exact generation if its instructions differ from the original Ultra guidance.
Charge and prepare each camera
Follow the Arlo Secure app’s battery prompts for your model. The original Ultra manual says its supplied battery is partially charged and recommends fully charging it before use. Insert the battery and seat the camera in its housing until it clicks. For newer models, use their own instructions rather than relying on the original Ultra manual.

Add the SmartHub or Base Station to the app
Arlo’s instructions require using the app to install and set up the SmartHub and Ultra camera. Start with the hub, connect it to the router, and complete its setup before adding cameras. See Arlo’s SmartHub and Base Station setup steps for current app guidance.
- Open the Arlo Secure app. Tap Devices and check that the selected Location is the one where you want the system.
- Tap Add, choose the device list, and select Base Station/Hub.
- Connect the hub to your router with an Ethernet cable before connecting power.
- Connect the AC adapter and wait for the hub status light: a one-LED SmartHub should turn blue; on a three-LED Base Station, the power LED should turn green.
- Complete the remaining in-app steps. Confirm the hub appears online in the app before proceeding.
Add and sync each Ultra camera
Use the camera-specific flow in the app and add only one camera at a time. Arlo’s camera setup instructions direct users to choose their camera type and follow the prompts.

- In the app, open Devices, tap Add, then select Cameras and Ultra Series.
- Choose the exact Ultra camera model. Confirm the app’s Location and follow any charging or battery prompts.
- Select the SmartHub or Base Station you just installed. Do not choose a direct-Wi-Fi option.
- Bring the camera within 3–10 feet (1–3 meters) of the hub for pairing, as Arlo recommends during sync troubleshooting.
- Follow the app’s sync instructions. Ultra cameras generally begin syncing when the battery is inserted; press the camera’s Sync button only if the app or model manual asks you to.
- Wait for setup to finish, then repeat these steps for the next camera.
For Ultra 3rd Gen, Arlo says to verify that the SmartHub is online first. If more than one hub is available, choose the one closest to the camera’s intended location. If the camera LED is not blinking blue or pairing does not complete, the app may prompt you to press its Sync button.
Verify live view before mounting
Open the camera’s live stream in the app before deciding on a permanent position. A successful pairing alone does not confirm that the chosen location gives you a usable view. Adjust the framing in live view, then mount the camera once the connection and image are satisfactory.

The original Ultra manual describes an outdoor screw mount and supplied drywall anchors for drywall. Package contents can vary, so check the hardware you actually received and the manual for your camera before drilling or selecting fasteners. Add motion detection and notification settings in the app after positioning the camera.
Choose local or cloud 4K recording
Basic camera setup and optional 4K recording storage are separate. The original Ultra manual describes local 4K recording to a microSD card inserted in the SmartHub. For basic 4K use, that manual recommends an average upload speed of 3 Mbps per Ultra camera; this is a model-specific recommendation, not a guarantee for every network or a current universal requirement.

The same manual describes cloud storage of 4K motion clips as a paid add-on. Arlo plan names, availability, and terms can change, so check the current options in your Arlo account or app before relying on cloud 4K storage.

- Check the hub: Make sure it is installed, powered, online in the app, and compatible with the camera model.
- Check the battery: Charge it as prompted, and add only one camera at a time.
- Check the app choices: Use the correct Location, select the installed SmartHub or Base Station, and follow the Ultra camera flow rather than a direct-Wi-Fi setup.
- Move closer: Pair 3–10 feet (1–3 meters) from the hub, then move the camera to its intended location after setup.
- Follow the camera’s sync prompt: Battery insertion usually starts syncing on Ultra cameras. If the app or manual asks, press the camera Sync button.
- For a multi-LED Base Station, retry its Sync button carefully: Do not hold it too long. Arlo says that if an amber indication appears after an overly long press, wait 15 minutes before trying again.
- Get model-specific help: If these checks do not resolve setup, use the app’s Need Help option or the support flow for the exact device.
