For the cleanest sound and lowest delay, connect the CMF Speaker S over USB-C when your phone or computer supports USB audio; Nothing specifies lossless playback with latency below 60 ms. If you use Bluetooth, keep the source within a few metres with a clear path, move it away from busy 2.4 GHz equipment, and put compatible Wi-Fi devices on 5 GHz. Persistent interruptions usually require forgetting and re-pairing the speaker, a documented factory reset, or a firmware update in the Nothing X app.

The CMF Speaker S supports Bluetooth 6.0 with AAC and SBC for normal playback, dual-device connections, custom EQ and two-speaker Stereo Mode. The practical results depend as much on radio conditions, source placement and streaming connectivity as on the speaker itself.

Why does my CMF Speaker S keep cutting out?

Most skips come from a weak or obstructed radio path, 2.4 GHz congestion, the speaker reconnecting to a different remembered device, or a streaming connection that is being mistaken for a Bluetooth fault. Diagnose those causes in that order before resetting the speaker.

Distance and obstructions

Nothing claims more than 100 metres in free space, but that is not an indoor guarantee. Walls, reinforced concrete, metal furniture, your body and a phone carried inside a bag can absorb or block the signal. Apple and Sony both identify distance, obstructions and nearby radio sources as common causes of Bluetooth skips and disconnections.

Use the free-space figure as an upper boundary, not as a promise that a speaker will work throughout a house or office. A source only a few metres away with a clear path can be more reliable than one farther away through several walls. For a fair test, keep both devices at roughly the same height, remove cases or containers that may shield the phone, and avoid placing the speaker inside a cabinet.

2.4 GHz interference

Bluetooth shares the crowded 2.4 GHz band with many Wi-Fi networks, microwave ovens, cordless phones and other Bluetooth devices. A speaker beside a router, a microwave or a dense USB 3 device cluster may stutter even when the phone is nearby. Moving compatible Wi-Fi clients to 5 GHz reduces that competition; it does not change the Bluetooth radio itself.

Interference can be intermittent. A microwave, nearby wireless camera or busy meeting room may affect playback only at certain times, so repeat the test after moving the speaker rather than assuming the first result is definitive. Keep the speaker and source away from a router’s antennas and from hubs or docks with many active wireless or USB devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong remembered device

The speaker keeps connection records and preferentially reconnects to the last-connected device when it powers on. A nearby tablet or laptop can therefore take the connection before your intended phone does. Disconnect Bluetooth on other nearby devices while testing.

Streaming is not the same as Bluetooth

A streaming app can pause because of Wi-Fi or cellular data while a locally stored track plays normally. Download a track, turn off streaming temporarily and repeat the test. Stable local playback points toward the network or app rather than the speaker’s Bluetooth link.

Use the same local track for each placement test and listen for several minutes. If the interruption occurs at the same time in the file on two different sources, that is more suggestive of the speaker or its wireless environment. If only one app or one network path fails, investigate that source before changing speaker settings.

How should I position the speaker and source for a stable connection?

  1. Put the phone, tablet or computer within a few metres of the speaker for diagnosis.
  2. Keep a clear line of sight where practical. Remove metal objects and thick obstructions between the two devices.
  3. Do not test with the source buried in a pocket, backpack or desk drawer; your body and the container can attenuate the signal.
  4. Move the speaker and source away from Wi-Fi routers, microwave ovens, cordless phones and areas with many active Bluetooth devices.
  5. If your router supports dual-band Wi-Fi, connect other clients to 5 GHz while you test Bluetooth playback.

After each change, play the same local track for several minutes. Changing one variable at a time tells you which placement or radio source is responsible. Once playback is stable, add back devices or move to the normal listening position one at a time; this identifies the condition that reintroduces the fault.

1. Make the intended source win

Turn Bluetooth off on nearby phones, tablets and computers that have previously used the speaker. Power the CMF Speaker S off and on, then connect from the device you actually want to use. This avoids the last-connected-device preference causing an apparent failure.

2. Test a local file

Play a downloaded or otherwise local audio file. If it is clean while an online service skips, check the phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular signal, the streaming app and any data-saving setting before changing speaker settings.

3. Forget and pair again

  1. Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and remove, or “forget,” CMF Speaker S.
  2. Restart Bluetooth on the source device.
  3. Start pairing again and select CMF Speaker S.
  4. If the speaker is no longer discoverable after its reconnection timeout, hold its Bluetooth button until the blue pairing LED flashes, then select it.

Do not repeatedly select an old entry while the speaker is connected to another device. A fresh pairing record confirms which source is actually in control and removes a stale connection from the test.

4. Perform the factory reset

Use this only after placement and re-pairing tests. Hold the Bluetooth button for at least 10 seconds. A completed reset is indicated by rapid blue flashes, followed by a restart and pairing mode. You will need to pair the source again after the reset.

5. Update firmware

If reconnection and reset steps do not solve the problem, Nothing’s support instructions direct you to install the latest firmware through the Nothing X app and try again. Keep the phone close to the speaker and maintain power during the update. Afterward, pair only the intended source first and repeat the local-file test before reconnecting other devices.

Can USB-C improve CMF Speaker S sound quality and latency?

Yes, when the phone or computer supports USB audio. Nothing specifies lossless playback and latency below 60 milliseconds over USB-C, making it the preferred connection for critical listening, games, video editing or any situation where Bluetooth delay is distracting.

When USB-C is the better choice

  • Use it for the shortest, most predictable digital path and the lowest stated latency.
  • Choose it when wireless congestion is severe or when you cannot keep a clear radio path.
  • Use a USB-C cable and a source that can output audio over USB; a charge-only cable or a source that does not support USB audio will not provide playback.

USB-C removes the Bluetooth radio link from the audio path, but it does not fix a streaming service that is buffering. Test with a local file if you are separating source-network problems from speaker problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When switching to USB-C, confirm that the phone or computer has selected the speaker as its USB audio output. Some devices continue sending sound to their internal speaker or another headset until the output is changed. If the cable is connected but there is no sound, test another known data-capable USB-C cable and verify that the source supports USB audio rather than only charging.

Which Bluetooth codecs and playback modes does the CMF Speaker S support?

Nothing lists Bluetooth 6.0, AAC and SBC codecs for ordinary playback. It also lists LC3 for Auracast audio, dual-device connections, USB-C audio, custom EQ and Stereo Mode.

Capability What it means in practice
Bluetooth 6.0 The wireless transport used for normal Bluetooth connections; actual stability still depends on distance, obstructions and interference.
AAC and SBC The published codecs for regular Bluetooth playback. The source device determines which compatible codec is selected.
LC3 and Auracast Support for Auracast audio, a broadcast-style mode distinct from ordinary one-to-one Bluetooth playback.
Dual-device connections Two devices can remain connected for convenience, but disconnecting the second device is a useful troubleshooting test.
Stereo Mode Two CMF Speaker S units can be paired for left/right presentation.

No independent laboratory comparison of AAC, SBC or dropout rates establishes that one codec is universally more reliable on this speaker. Treat codec selection as a compatibility feature rather than a guaranteed cure for interference.

For the simplest stability test, use one source, one speaker and the codec selected automatically by the source. Adding a second connected device, Stereo Mode pair or Auracast broadcast introduces another connection state, so test ordinary one-speaker playback first when diagnosing a fault.

How can I tune CMF Speaker S sound quality?

Use the Nothing X Custom EQ

Open the CMF Speaker S controls in the Nothing X app and use Custom EQ to adjust bass, treble or voice for the room and the content. Start with small changes and compare at the same volume so you can hear the effect rather than being fooled by a louder setting.

Save or note settings that work for speech, music and games before experimenting. That makes it easier to return to a known baseline after a reset or firmware update and prevents an EQ change from being confused with a wireless problem.

Control bass enhancement

Ultra Bass can make low frequencies sound fuller, but aggressive bass enhancement at high volume can produce audible distortion. If bass notes sound harsh or muddy, reduce the enhancement or overall volume; this is a listening adjustment, not a published diagnosis of hardware failure.

Use Stereo Mode for a wider image

Pair two CMF Speaker S units in Stereo Mode when you want separate left and right channels instead of one-speaker mono. The rear LED breathes white when Stereo Pair is active. Two speakers also require two units to remain within a usable wireless path, so poor placement can affect the pair even if one speaker alone is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep both units positioned where their wireless links remain clear and test each speaker alone if the pair cuts out. A problem affecting only one unit points you toward that unit’s placement or pairing state; a problem affecting both at the same time may be environmental or source-related.

What are the CMF Speaker S specifications that affect expectations?

Specification Published value and qualification
Driver 45 mm full-range driver
Output 10 W RMS, published by Nothing in 2026
Frequency response 70 Hz–20 kHz, published by Nothing in 2026
Wireless range More than 100 m in free space; indoor walls, metal, body blocking and congestion reduce practical range
Battery claim Up to 18 hours under Nothing’s controlled conditions: 50% volume, AAC, Ultra Bass on and laboratory testing. Actual life varies with volume, source, wireless conditions, features and battery age.

The range and battery figures are useful boundaries, not promises for a room full of walls or maximum-volume playback. A short, unobstructed path generally matters more to dropout prevention than the headline free-space range.

Battery behavior can also change the way you evaluate a problem. The 18-hour claim was measured at 50% volume with AAC and Ultra Bass enabled under controlled laboratory conditions. Higher volume, different wireless conditions, other features and an older battery can reduce actual runtime, so do not use the headline figure as a guarantee for every listening session.

What do the CMF Speaker S LEDs mean?

LED state Meaning What to do
Flashing blue Pairing mode Choose CMF Speaker S in the source device’s Bluetooth menu.
Solid blue Bluetooth connected Playback should come from the connected source; check the source’s output selection if silent.
Breathing white Stereo Pair active Both speakers are operating as a Stereo Mode pair.
Solid white Multi-speaker or Auracast active Check the broadcast or multi-speaker source if audio is not as expected.
Rapid blue flashes followed by restart Factory reset completed Pair the source again.

Use the LED as a state check before changing settings. A solid blue light confirms a Bluetooth connection, but it does not prove that the intended phone is connected or that the source is sending audio to the speaker. A flashing blue light means the speaker is ready to be selected again.

How do I choose between Bluetooth, USB-C and Stereo Mode?

Priority Best starting option Reason and trade-off
Cleanest path and lowest delay USB-C audio Nothing specifies lossless playback and latency below 60 ms; it requires a compatible source and cable.
Convenient everyday listening Bluetooth Wireless and supports AAC/SBC, but distance and 2.4 GHz activity can cause skips.
Two people switching sources Dual-device Bluetooth Convenient, though another remembered device can capture reconnection during troubleshooting.
Wide left/right presentation Two speakers in Stereo Mode Creates separate channels; both units add another wireless link and placement requirement.
Broadcast listening Auracast with LC3 Uses the speaker’s listed Auracast capability rather than ordinary one-to-one playback.

Choose the connection according to the problem you are solving. USB-C prioritizes the cleanest path and latency, Bluetooth prioritizes mobility, dual-device mode prioritizes convenience, and Stereo Mode prioritizes a wider left/right presentation. None of these modes removes the need for a compatible source and sensible placement.

What should I check if the speaker will not reconnect?

  • Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the intended source and disabled on nearby devices that previously used the speaker.
  • Look for the speaker’s LED state. If it is not discoverable, hold the Bluetooth button until the blue pairing light flashes.
  • Remove the old CMF Speaker S entry from Bluetooth settings and pair again rather than repeatedly tapping a stale entry.
  • Move the source close to the speaker and away from routers and other 2.4 GHz transmitters.
  • Reset only after those checks, holding the Bluetooth button for at least 10 seconds and waiting for rapid blue flashes followed by restart.
  • Install the latest firmware in Nothing X if the problem remains.

After a reset, start with one source and confirm ordinary Bluetooth playback before restoring dual-device connections or Stereo Mode. This creates a known baseline and makes later troubleshooting much easier.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How can I tell whether the speaker or the phone is at fault?

  1. Play a local file rather than a stream.
  2. Use one source only and turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices.
  3. Place that source within a few metres with no obstruction.
  4. Repeat with a second known-good source if available.

If local audio is stable on both sources but one streaming app skips, investigate the network or app. If multiple sources skip at close range after re-pairing and a reset, firmware and support assistance are the next practical steps.

For a stronger comparison, keep the speaker in the same position while changing only the source. Then keep the source fixed and move the speaker away from the suspected router or other 2.4 GHz device. This separates a source-specific issue from an environmental one without relying on assumptions about codec quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mistakes make dropouts worse?

  • Assuming the advertised 100-plus-metre range applies through walls or across a busy office.
  • Leaving a tablet or laptop’s Bluetooth on and then blaming the speaker when it reconnects first.
  • Changing several settings at once, which hides the cause of an intermittent fault.
  • Judging Bluetooth from a stream without checking a downloaded track.
  • Resetting before trying a close, unobstructed placement and a fresh pairing.
  • Running Ultra Bass at high volume and treating resulting distortion as a wireless dropout.
  • Putting the source in a pocket, bag or drawer during a test and then interpreting body blocking as a speaker failure.
  • Placing the speaker directly beside a router, microwave, cordless phone or crowded wireless hub.
  • Assuming a solid blue LED proves that the desired phone, rather than another remembered device, is supplying audio.

What is the practical fix for most CMF Speaker S owners?

Start with a short, clear path and a local track, then remove competing Bluetooth devices and 2.4 GHz sources. Use USB-C when you need the cleanest stated signal and sub-60 ms latency. If Bluetooth remains unreliable, forget and re-pair, perform the 10-second reset, and update firmware through Nothing X before seeking further support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will switching from AAC to SBC stop Bluetooth stuttering?

Not necessarily. The speaker officially supports both codecs, but there is no independent dropout test showing one is universally more stable; placement, interference and source behavior usually matter more than the codec label.

Can I keep two phones connected while troubleshooting?

You can, because the speaker supports dual-device connections, but temporarily disconnect the second phone. The speaker prefers the last-connected device at power-on, which can make the intended phone appear unable to reconnect.

Does a factory reset erase my Nothing X equalizer settings?

A reset returns the speaker to pairing mode and requires your source devices to pair again. Because saved app behavior can vary by firmware, note your Custom EQ values before resetting so you can recreate them afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a downloaded song fine while Spotify or another stream skips?

A local file does not depend on a live network connection. If it plays cleanly while streaming pauses, check Wi-Fi or cellular coverage, the streaming app and data-saving settings before treating the speaker’s Bluetooth link as defective.

Can USB-C really sound better than Bluetooth on the CMF Speaker S?

When the source supports USB audio, Nothing specifies lossless playback over USB-C and latency below 60 ms. It is the better choice for critical listening or timing-sensitive work, although a streaming service can still buffer independently of the speaker.

Why does the speaker work close up but cut out across the room?

The published range is more than 100 metres in free space, not through walls or metal. Distance, body blocking, thick obstructions and 2.4 GHz congestion reduce practical indoor range, so use a shorter unobstructed path or move competing wireless equipment.

What does a rapidly flashing blue LED mean after I hold the Bluetooth button?

Rapid blue flashes followed by a restart indicate that the documented factory reset completed. The speaker then enters pairing mode, so select it again from the intended source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will two CMF Speaker S units always be more stable in Stereo Mode?

Stereo Mode provides separate left and right channels, but it adds another speaker and wireless link. Test each unit alone first and keep both within a clear, usable path; poor placement can affect the pair even when one speaker works normally.

The Bottom Line

For reliable CMF Speaker S playback, begin with one source, a local track and a short unobstructed path. Reduce 2.4 GHz congestion, then forget and re-pair before using the documented 10-second reset or updating firmware in Nothing X. Choose USB-C for the stated lossless, sub-60 ms path; use Bluetooth for convenience and Stereo Mode for a wider two-speaker presentation.
