Then tackle the largest controllable drains: screen brightness and screen-on time, apps running in the background, and demanding tasks such as navigation, hotspot use, streaming, or gaming. If the phone still runs down quickly, check its battery-health or service information; settings changes cannot restore capacity lost to battery aging.
Start by finding what is using the battery
Open your phone’s battery settings and review the usage breakdown before switching off features at random. A high-use app may be responsible, or the drain may come from long screen time, location activity, or background work. The exact labels and available diagnostics vary by model and software version.
On iPhone
Go to Settings > Battery. Review the usage information and look for apps or activity that stand out, including background activity, location use, or frequent screen wake-ups. Apple describes these as clues for diagnosing drain in its iPhone battery and performance guidance.
On Android
Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery usage. Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android versions; Google notes that some of its steps apply only to Android 13 and later and recommends checking the device maker’s instructions for model-specific guidance. Reduce screen power use
The display is a useful place to start because brightness and time spent with the screen on are under your control.
- Lower brightness: Reduce it to a comfortable level, or use auto-brightness or adaptive brightness if it works well for you.
- Shorten screen timeout or Auto-Lock: Set the screen to turn off sooner when you leave the phone idle.
- Consider dark theme on Android: Use it if the option is available and you prefer it. Google includes dark theme among its battery-saving suggestions.
Apple recommends dimming the display or enabling auto-brightness, and may identify high brightness or a long Auto-Lock interval as factors in battery drain. Its iPhone battery-drain guidance explains where to look for suggested changes.
Adjust apps and background activity selectively
If the usage screen identifies an app with unusually high battery use, check whether it needs to run or update in the background. On Android, Google recommends restricting high-use apps and using Adaptive Battery where available. On iPhone, inspect the listed activity and consider whether the app’s background or location behavior is necessary. Avoid disabling everything indiscriminately: it can interrupt features you rely on without addressing the main drain.

Use a battery-saving mode when the tradeoff is worthwhile
Battery-saving modes can extend runtime by reducing work the phone does in the background, but some updates or features may be delayed or limited.
iPhone: Low Power Mode
Turn on Low Power Mode when you need to stretch a charge. Apple says it can reduce or disable Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and visual effects. It changes power use; it does not repair a worn battery. Details are in Apple’s battery-drain guidance.
Android: Battery Saver
Turn on Battery Saver when runtime matters more than immediate background updates. Google says the mode turns on Dark theme and limits or turns off background activity; visual effects, some features, network connections, and apps may be delayed. Its availability and behavior can vary by device. See Google’s Android instructions.

Limit demanding activities when charge is low
Navigation, GPS use, hotspot operation, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, and calls while moving can use substantial power. If you need to get through the day, shorten or pause these activities where practical, especially when they coincide with a high battery-use reading. Google lists these among activities to limit when trying to conserve Android battery.
Check battery condition if changes do not help
Daily runtime and battery lifespan are different. Apple defines battery life as the time a device runs before it needs recharging, while battery lifespan is how long the battery lasts until replacement. Rechargeable batteries become less effective as they chemically age, so a phone can need charging sooner even after settings are optimized. Read Apple’s battery and performance explanation.
iPhone battery-health menu
On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the screen recommends service, Apple advises considering battery replacement and following the on-screen instructions.

Apple’s current guidance says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models, the design figure is 80% after 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not a guarantee for an individual phone: actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. See Apple’s battery-health guidance.
Android battery assessment
Android does not have one universal battery-health menu or replacement threshold established across manufacturers. If drain persists or you suspect battery wear, consult the support guidance for your phone’s maker and model rather than relying on instructions for a different Android device. Heat is a battery-care issue, not just a same-day runtime setting. Apple advises: “Avoid charging or leaving your iPhone in hot environments, including direct sun exposure, for extended periods of time.” For model-specific charging and storage advice, consult Apple’s battery guidance.

Decide whether to adjust settings or seek service

For iPhone battery service, Apple says out-of-warranty service is available for a charge; price and availability depend on current service terms and location. For Android, use manufacturer or qualified repair guidance for the exact model.
When you need extra charge away from an outlet
A USB-C power bank or portable phone charger can provide backup energy while you are out. Match its connector and output to your phone. It adds charge you can carry; it does not repair or restore the built-in battery.
