You can keep selected search operations on encrypted fields, but ordinary database search and sorting do not work automatically once values are encrypted. Choose a mode or database feature for each field and query type, decide which information you are willing to expose, and treat sorting as a separate requirement. If the chosen feature does not document the exact plaintext sort you need, retrieve a bounded candidate set, decrypt it in trusted application code, and sort it there.
Start with the operations each field actually needs
Field-level encryption protects stored field values, but it does not make them behave like plaintext values to database operators. Before choosing an encryption design, write down what the application must do with each field. Equality filters, ranges, ordering, pagination, joins, grouping, and text or prefix searches are different requirements; support for one does not imply support for the others.
| Field requirement | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Exact-match filter | Does the database need to find records where the field equals a supplied value, or can trusted application code filter a candidate set? |
| Range predicate | Must the database find values above, below, or between bounds? What precision and domain boundaries matter? |
| Sort and pagination | Must results be ordered by the decrypted value in the database? Is sorting a bounded result set in trusted code acceptable? Must pages be stable across requests? |
| Other operations | Are joins, grouping, text search, or prefix queries necessary, and are they explicitly supported for the chosen encrypted-field feature? |
| Workload size | How many candidate records could an application retrieve and decrypt for local filtering or sorting, and what are the latency and memory limits? |
Mark each operation as database-side or application-side. This prevents a common design mistake: treating “searchable” as a promise that all filters, ordering, and pagination behave as they do on plaintext.
Decide what information the database may learn
Searchable encryption is a security tradeoff, not a way to make query behavior invisible. Identify who can read database rows, indexes, backups, access patterns, and application logs, and who controls the encryption keys. Then decide whether the design may reveal repeated values, repeated queries, approximate value distributions, or information about range boundaries.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Repeated values: A design that lets the database match equal encrypted values may make equality or frequency patterns observable.
- Access patterns: Search activity can reveal which records or value groups are accessed, even when field contents are encrypted.
- Ordering and ranges: Any representation that enables ordering or range filtering needs explicit security review; do not assume it hides order information.
- Operational exposure: Application logs, backups, and key access are part of the threat model, not separate implementation details.
Set this leakage budget before selecting a feature. A query capability is only acceptable if its documented exposure fits the threat model.
Choose an encryption approach for each query pattern
There is no single field-encryption mode that preserves all database operations. These options have different query capabilities and constraints; verify support for the exact server, deployment, driver, and SDK you use.

| Approach | Documented query behavior | Important exposure or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| MongoDB CSFLE with randomized encryption | Reads that need to evaluate the encrypted field are not supported in MongoDB CSFLE. | Randomized encryption hides repeated-value patterns; do not expect ordinary field-based filtering or ordering on the encrypted value. |
| MongoDB CSFLE with deterministic encryption | Supports selected reads, including equality-style lookup patterns, because equal plaintext inputs produce equal ciphertext outputs. | Repeated outputs expose equality patterns. MongoDB warns that low-cardinality encrypted data is susceptible to frequency analysis recovery. Deterministic ciphertext does not preserve plaintext order. |
| MongoDB Queryable Encryption | MongoDB documents encrypted equality and range queries. The current manual identifies additional string query types as Public Preview. | Configure a field for equality or range querying, not both. Queryability adds storage and performance costs; changing encrypted/queryable fields requires rebuilding the encryption schema and recreating the collection. |
| AWS Database Encryption SDK searchable encryption for DynamoDB | Configured beacons support searches using HMAC-derived identifiers alongside randomized encrypted field values. | Beacon configuration trades query efficiency against information revealed about value distributions. AWS requires its KMS Hierarchical keyring for searchable encryption; beacons are designed for new, unpopulated databases. |
MongoDB’s CSFLE documentation explains that deterministic encryption enables more read operations while making low-cardinality data vulnerable to frequency analysis. For DynamoDB workloads covered by AWS Database Encryption SDK searchable encryption, beacon design is specific to that SDK, not a general-purpose recipe for other databases. AWS describes beacons as a way to reduce the performance costs associated with client-side encrypted databases, while also documenting the distribution information the design can reveal. Consult AWS’s searchable encryption guide and beacon planning guidance; their URLs were not included in the supplied material, so this article does not link to them.
Design sorting separately from search
Neither randomized nor deterministic ciphertext should be treated as a sortable encoding of plaintext. Randomized encryption obscures repeated-value patterns, while deterministic encryption repeats outputs for equal values; neither makes ciphertext order correspond to the order of unequal plaintext values.

When application-side sorting is practical
- Use an authorized database query to retrieve a bounded candidate set without asking the database to sort by the encrypted plaintext.
- Decrypt only within trusted application code that is permitted to access the plaintext and keys.
- Sort the decrypted candidates using the application’s defined comparison rules, including null handling, locale, and numeric or date semantics where relevant.
- Return results only after applying the required authorization and filtering rules. Do not let a partial candidate set silently stand in for a complete globally sorted result.
This method can be suitable when the candidate set is known to be small and the application can safely handle the decrypted values. It can become costly or incorrect for large result sets, global ordering, or pagination: sorting only the current database page does not guarantee that page is the next slice of the globally sorted results.
When the database must sort or paginate globally
First verify that the exact encrypted-field feature and driver document the sort operation and semantics you need. The documented capabilities in the sources used here establish selected equality and range query support, but do not establish general plaintext sorting. If a separate sortable representation is proposed, treat it as additional information exposure: determine what ordering it reveals, who can query it, how it is protected, and whether that leakage is approved. If neither database-side support nor acceptable bounded local sorting fits, revisit the data model or product requirement rather than sorting ciphertext and assuming it is plaintext order.

Plan schema changes, migration, and operations
MongoDB Queryable Encryption
- Choose equality or range queryability for each field based on the actual access pattern; MongoDB documents that a field cannot be configured for both query types.
- Budget for the feature’s metadata collections, indexes, storage, and write overhead.
- Plan changes to encrypted or queryable fields as a schema rebuild: MongoDB documents rebuilding the encryption schema and recreating the collection when those fields change.
- For numeric range use, select bounds and precision that match the application’s domain, and check current release documentation before deployment.
AWS Database Encryption SDK beacons
- Design beacons before populating the DynamoDB table. AWS says adding a beacon later does not automatically map existing records.
- Use the AWS KMS Hierarchical keyring required for searchable encryption.
- Evaluate beacon length, partitions, value distributions, and query patterns together. AWS explains that shorter beacons and more partitions increase collisions and reduce frequency concentration, while longer beacons and fewer partitions improve query precision.
- Plan how existing data will be migrated if searchable encryption is introduced after the table has been populated; do not assume newly configured beacons make old records searchable automatically.
Across either implementation
Confirm server, deployment, driver, and SDK compatibility for the selected feature. Include key provisioning, rotation and recovery, backup access, observability, and failure handling in the deployment plan. These details depend on the specific environment and should be checked against its current vendor documentation.
Test correctness, performance, and leakage before release
A feature that accepts a query is not necessarily correct for the application’s edge cases or fast enough for its workload. Test with representative records and value distributions, especially common low-cardinality and hot values.
- Query correctness: Verify every required equality or range predicate against expected plaintext results. Include boundary values and, where applicable, false-positive handling.
- Ordering and pagination: Compare decrypted results with the application’s expected plaintext order. Test page boundaries and concurrent changes if the feature requires stable pagination.
- Leakage review: Inspect which repeated values, query patterns, distributions, and range behavior are exposed under the chosen design.
- Operational cost: Measure index and storage growth, write overhead, query latency, and the cost of decrypting and sorting candidate sets in the target environment.
- Lifecycle behavior: Exercise key rotation or recovery and the planned migration path, including the behavior of records written before a schema or beacon change.
No universal performance result follows from the feature descriptions: measure the exact deployment and workload before committing to result sizes, latency targets, or pagination behavior.
