Look for repeated, very short broadband transients, then check their spacing, shape and sequence pattern. A sharp click on its own is not enough to identify a sperm whale: ship machinery, shrimp snaps, echoes, recording artifacts and other toothed whales can produce similar sounds. In a hydrophone recording, the strongest case combines waveform and spectrogram views with inter-click intervals (ICI), recording metadata and comparison with a reliable sperm-whale reference.

What do sperm whale clicks look like in a recording?

A sperm-whale click is an impulsive sound: in a waveform it appears as a brief, sharp event, and in a spectrogram it often appears as a narrow vertical mark spanning a broad range of frequencies. Repeated marks separated by recognizable intervals are more informative than one transient because the sequence can reveal whether the sound is a usual click train, a rapid buzz or creak, a slow-click sequence, or a patterned coda.

Check both the waveform and spectrogram

The waveform shows when each transient begins and how its amplitude changes over time. The spectrogram shows how its energy is distributed across frequency. Use a short analysis window to resolve the millisecond-scale event, then inspect a longer time range to see how the clicks are spaced and whether their rate changes. A very long window can blur a click in time; a very short view may hide the pattern of the train.

Do not expect every candidate to look like a clean, full-band vertical line. Directionality, propagation through water and the recorder’s frequency response can remove or weaken parts of the signal. Off-axis clicks can be distorted or show multipulse structure, and a limited-bandwidth recording can make a broadband source look narrow-band.

Why a click train is more diagnostic than one mark

Several transients with consistent timing provide evidence that a single click cannot. Their inter-click intervals can be measured, and their regularity and rate trajectory can be compared with known click classes. The sequence still does not prove the species on its own: interpretation also depends on bandwidth, pulse shape, background noise, behavioral context and the quality of the recording.

How do I identify whale clicks in a hydrophone recording?

Preserve the original recording and its metadata, find candidate impulses in a waveform and spectrogram, measure the timing between successive clicks, and compare the resulting pattern with reference material. Treat automated detections as candidates for human review rather than as a final species identification.

  1. Keep the raw file. Preserve an unprocessed copy before filtering, denoising, changing gain or exporting a shorter clip. Note the recording location, depth, date, sample rate, hydrophone model, gain, filter settings and sea state if those details are available. Processing may make an event easier to hear or see, but it can also alter the evidence used to identify it.
  2. Inspect the signal at two scales. Use a short-window spectrogram and waveform view to examine individual transients, then zoom out to examine seconds of surrounding audio. Look for sharp waveform events paired with brief broadband spectrogram marks. A single visual feature is not a species diagnosis.
  3. Mark successive click onsets. Record the onset time of each event in a candidate sequence and calculate the time from one onset to the next. These inter-click intervals are the primary practical clue for sorting common click types. Check the sequence over time rather than relying on one pair of clicks.
  4. Assess frequency content cautiously. Note the visible bandwidth and where energy is strongest, but do not reject a candidate just because it lacks a textbook spectrum. Angle, propagation, depth and hydrophone response can all affect the frequencies captured at the recorder.
  5. Compare with a reference recording. Compare pulse spacing, duration and train pattern, as well as the spectrogram. NOAA Fisheries provides sperm-whale audio and click spectrogram examples for Physeter macrocephalus; its acoustic-identification guidance also describes using hydrophones, species-specific detectors and spectrogram inspection to identify calls amid environmental noise.
  6. Check for competing explanations. Review ship or other machinery noise, snapping shrimp, echoes, cable or handling noise, and clicks from other odontocetes. Consider whether multiple hydrophones detected the event and whether the surrounding recording offers useful behavioral context.
  7. Report confidence in proportion to the evidence. If bandwidth, metadata or reference comparisons are incomplete, describe the event as a “likely sperm-whale click” rather than asserting a confirmed species call. Stronger identification is possible when adequate recording information and reference material are available, especially alongside array bearings or visual or tag confirmation.

What does inter-click interval tell me?

ICI is the time between successive click onsets. It helps distinguish broad categories of sperm-whale sounds, but it is a classification clue rather than a stand-alone species test: the interval must be considered with the pulse shape, pattern and context.

Click category Typical timing described in the literature Interpretation and useful checks
Usual clicks Generally about 0.2–2.0 seconds apart; a 2017 field study reports 0.5–2.0 seconds during descent. Long trains are commonly associated with echolocation and prey search. Look for repeated impulses and assess the broader dive sequence.
Buzzes or creaks Intervals below 0.2 seconds, with click rate increasing rapidly as prey capture approaches. These rapid trains are commonly associated with prey capture. Clicks have shorter pulses and reduced sonar range compared with usual clicks.
Slow clicks Roughly 2–8 seconds apart; some literature uses 3–8 seconds. The lower repetition rate and reported low-frequency emphasis make a communication role plausible, but the spacing alone does not establish function.
Codas A patterned group of clicks; no single interval range defines all codas. Look for a stereotyped rhythmic sequence. Pattern and timing across the group matter more than the spectrum of one click; codas are associated with social communication.
Squeals Some review classifications describe very rapid sequences reaching hundreds to more than a thousand clicks per second. Treat this as a specialist category. Confirm which sound taxonomy is being used instead of assuming every extremely rapid train is a feeding buzz.

Intervals near a category boundary should not be treated as a hard cutoff. The published ranges are useful guides, not universal rules that account for every animal, recording position or listening condition. If timing looks inconsistent, check whether clicks were missed, obscured by noise or split into multiple apparent events by the recording or analysis method.

What frequency are sperm whale clicks?

There is no universal frequency cutoff that confirms a sperm-whale click. Published measurements vary with sex, angle and recording geometry; propagation and the hydrophone’s response further affect what reaches the recording. Use frequency as supporting evidence alongside timing and shape, not as a pass-or-fail test.

What published measurements show

In a 1995 study, Goold and Jones analyzed 8,540 clicks. They reported male spectral peaks near 400 Hz and 2 kHz, with energy extending to at least 12 kHz, and female peaks near 1.2 and 3 kHz, with energy extending to at least 15 kHz. Those values describe the recordings and animals in that study; they are not a universal male-versus-female classifier.

Other published accounts describe different ranges. A 2017 field study reports usual clicks in a 10 Hz–30 kHz band and notes that off-axis low-frequency components were detectable to 15 km under sea state 3 conditions. A 2017 review describes a 100 Hz–30 kHz bandwidth, peak energy around 15 kHz and durations of 0.2–3 milliseconds. On-axis measurements reported by Møhl and colleagues in 2003 describe clicks of about 100 microseconds, a centroid frequency near 15 kHz and source levels up to 236 dB re 1 μPa rms at 1 m.

These figures are not interchangeable: studies can describe different click types, measurement positions, animals and recording conditions. In particular, a reported source level is not the amplitude a distant hydrophone should show. Do not use any one peak, duration or amplitude value as a universal identification threshold.

Why a genuine click may look narrow-band

  • Directionality: the signal reaching a recorder can change with the whale’s orientation relative to the hydrophone. An off-axis event may be distorted or lose frequency components.
  • Propagation: distance, depth and the path through the water affect which parts of the signal arrive clearly.
  • Recorder response: a hydrophone and recording chain do not necessarily capture all frequencies equally. Sampling rate, gain and filters also limit what the file can show.
  • Local noise: wind, waves, ship noise and other background sounds can mask parts of a click or make a transient harder to distinguish.

A narrow-looking spectrum therefore does not rule out a sperm whale. Interpret the apparent bandwidth in light of the recording’s specifications and conditions.

How can I tell a sperm whale click from ship noise or another transient?

Compare the event’s timing, shape, bandwidth and repetition pattern, then consider the background and recording setup. No single visual signature is sufficient: many marine transients can resemble clicks, so a credible identification combines several independent clues.

What to compare What to examine Why it helps
ICI and rate trajectory Spacing between onsets and whether the sequence accelerates. Repeated clicks, a rapidly accelerating buzz and a rhythmic coda have different timing patterns.
Pulse duration and structure How brief each event is and whether it has multipulse structure. Pulse shape can support or weaken an interpretation, although off-axis distortion can change it.
Bandwidth and peak or center frequency Frequency extent and where the signal appears strongest. Useful as supporting evidence, but strongly affected by geometry and instrument response.
Sequence regularity Whether intervals form a repeatable rhythm or an organized train. Pattern across multiple clicks can be more informative than the appearance of one impulse.
Behavioral context Whether the recording includes a dive sequence or a rapid prey-capture-like train. Context can help interpret a click class but should not substitute for signal evidence.
Detection across sensors Whether multiple hydrophones detect the event and whether bearing information is available. Multiple sensors can strengthen an interpretation and help distinguish a localized animal from other sources.
Recording and noise conditions Calibration, bandwidth, filters, gain and local background noise. These determine which signal features can be trusted and what may have been masked or altered.

Ship machinery may create repeated or tonal sounds; snapping shrimp can create sharp transients; echoes can make one event appear as several; and cable or handling noise can produce impulsive artifacts. Other odontocetes also click. If a candidate depends on only one of these clues—for example, a bright vertical mark without a usable train or metadata—keep the identification provisional.

What recording setup and metadata do I need?

A hydrophone or underwater recorder is the direct way to capture underwater sound, but the file is only as useful as its bandwidth, settings and metadata allow. For identification, preserve enough information to judge whether an apparent spectral or amplitude feature belongs to the animal or to the recording chain.

Record what the instrument captured

  • Hydrophone or recorder model and, if available, its sensitivity or calibration information.
  • Sample rate, gain, and any filters or other processing applied.
  • Date, location, recording depth and sea state when known.
  • Whether the recording came from one hydrophone or multiple channels.
  • A raw copy of the file alongside any filtered or denoised versions used for listening.

Check that the sample rate and instrument response cover the frequency range you want to inspect; otherwise, the recording cannot establish whether energy outside its captured range was present. A calibrated multi-channel hydrophone array can add bearing and localization information, but it is not a prerequisite for examining click timing in a single recording. Without calibration and recording details, avoid making precise claims from apparent frequency peaks or loudness.

When should I call a detection “likely” rather than confirmed?

Use “likely sperm-whale click” when the recording contains a plausible train but lacks enough independent evidence for a confident species-level call. Stronger confidence requires a usable signal, interpretable timing, appropriate reference comparison and, where possible, additional evidence such as array bearings or visual or tag confirmation.

  • Lower confidence: one isolated transient, heavy processing, limited bandwidth, missing metadata, or a pattern that fits several sources.
  • More support: multiple sharp impulses, a coherent ICI pattern, compatible time-frequency shape, and comparison with known sperm-whale material.
  • Stronger confirmation: the acoustic evidence is supported by adequate recording information and an independent source of context, such as array bearings or visual or tag confirmation.

Automated acoustic detectors can help find candidate events in long recordings, but their output should be reviewed. A detector result is not a substitute for inspecting the underlying audio and sequence, particularly when environmental transients can mimic clicks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I identify a sperm whale from one click?

Usually, one isolated transient is not enough for a dependable species identification. A sequence with measurable timing and a comparison recording provides more evidence, while independent confirmation can increase confidence further.

Does a sperm whale click have to be ultrasonic?

No single frequency boundary applies to all recorded sperm-whale clicks. Published studies report energy across a wide range, and recording angle, propagation and hydrophone response can change the frequencies that appear in a file.

Can software identify sperm whale clicks automatically?

Acoustic detectors can flag candidate events in long recordings, which can make review more efficient. A person should still inspect the waveform, spectrogram and sequence because unrelated marine transients can resemble clicks.

Why does my spectrogram show a click as a narrow line instead of broadband?

The recorded appearance can be narrowed by off-axis directionality, propagation loss, instrument response or limited recording bandwidth. Check the hydrophone and processing metadata before treating that appearance as evidence against a sperm-whale click.
