Identify an old connector by its shape and printed label first, then use color as a supporting clue. Red, white and yellow RCA sockets normally mean right audio, left audio and composite video; green, blue and red sockets labeled Y/Pb/Pr are component video and need separate red/white audio. S-Video, VGA and DVI carry video only, while HDMI normally carries both digital video and audio. RF/coaxial is a tuner connection for antenna or cable signals, and optical or digital-coaxial sockets carry audio only.

Before buying a cable, photograph the entire panel, note whether each socket is marked IN or OUT, and read labels such as AV IN, COMPONENT, Y/Pb/Pr, S-VIDEO, PC/DVI, RF IN, DIGITAL AUDIO OUT, OPTICAL and ARC/eARC. Labels and the device manual override color because some manufacturers share one jack between more than one function.

What is the fastest way to identify an unfamiliar legacy port?

Use a four-part check: document the panel, identify the connector mechanically, determine the signal type, and match the cable to the socket and direction. This avoids the two most common mistakes: assuming every red jack is audio and assuming every video connector also carries sound.

  1. Photograph the complete panel. Include surrounding text and every neighboring socket. A close-up of one jack can hide a shared input or an adjacent audio connection.
  2. Read the printed label. A label such as AV IN, COMPONENT, Y/Pb/Pr, S-VIDEO, PC/DVI, RF IN, DIGITAL AUDIO OUT, OPTICAL or ARC/eARC is more reliable than color.
  3. Check shape and pin layout. Count visible pins, look for a center contact or blade, and note threaded, keyed or thumbscrew-secured fittings. Do not force a plug into a socket that only looks similar.
  4. Decide what the port carries. Video-only connections require a separate audio path; audio-only outputs cannot produce a picture. Finally, match the cable to IN versus OUT and check for a model-specific adapter.

Why should color be treated only as a clue?

Color conventions are useful but not universal. A red socket may be right-channel audio or the red component-video channel (Pr/Cr). Some televisions combine composite and component functions on a shared set of jacks, and some expose legacy signals through a proprietary multi-pin or 3.5 mm adapter. The label and manual establish the actual pinout.

What do the red, white and yellow RCA sockets mean?

A group of three RCA jacks colored yellow, red and white is normally a composite AV connection. Yellow carries one standard-definition composite video signal; white carries left analogue audio; red carries right analogue audio. The arrangement is the familiar three-cable connection used by many VCRs, DVD players and older game consoles.

How does composite video work?

Composite combines the black-and-white (luminance) and color information into one video signal. Audio remains separate on the left and right RCA channels, so all three plugs are needed for picture and stereo sound. A yellow plug by itself can produce a picture but cannot carry sound.

How do I connect composite equipment?

  1. Locate the source device’s AV OUT and the display’s AV IN. Do not connect two outputs together.
  2. Insert yellow into the video sockets, white into L audio and red into R audio. Follow labels if the colors differ.
  3. Select the television input named AV, Video or Composite.
  4. If the television uses a shared component/composite input or a small proprietary adapter, use the exact adapter specified for that model.

Samsung’s setup guidance describes this as three cables—red and white for audio, yellow for video. Composite is generally a standard-definition feed, so a modern display may show a softer image than an HD source even when the connection is working correctly.

How can I tell component video (YPbPr) from composite?

Component video uses three video channels, usually green Y, blue Pb/Cb and red Pr/Cr. It carries video only, so a complete connection normally has five plugs: those three video plugs plus red and white analogue audio.

What does each component label mean?

  • Y (green): luminance and synchronization information.
  • Pb or Cb (blue): one color-difference channel.
  • Pr or Cr (red): the other color-difference channel.
  • L and R (white and red): left and right analogue audio.

The red Pr/Cr video jack can sit beside a red right-audio jack. Never choose by color alone; follow the printed Y/Pb/Pr and L/R markings. Plugging the audio lead into Pr/Cr, or the video lead into right audio, produces either no picture or no sound.

Is component better than composite?

Component keeps luminance and color-difference information on separate video channels, whereas composite combines them. The connector group is therefore intended for higher-quality analogue video than a single yellow composite feed, but it remains a video-only path and still needs the separate audio pair. The exact resolution a device accepts is model-dependent; check its manual rather than assuming every Y/Pb/Pr socket accepts the same format.

What is the small round S-Video port?

S-Video is a keyed, round multi-pin connector, commonly smaller than a computer D-sub and often surrounded by a label such as S-VIDEO. It carries video only. Its conductors keep black-and-white and color information separate, which Sony describes as providing somewhat higher quality than composite video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because S-Video has no audio channel, connect the source’s red/white RCA audio outputs—or another compatible audio connection—to the television or receiver. Select the input assigned to S-Video and the corresponding audio input if the device uses separate input selections. Both devices must have matching S-Video sockets; an ordinary headphone lead is not a substitute.

How do I recognize an RF or coaxial television socket?

RF is a threaded or push-on coaxial connector labeled ANT, RF IN, CABLE or VHF/UHF. It carries a television tuner feed containing audio and video from an antenna or cable service. It is not the same as a yellow composite RCA jack, even though both can appear on older equipment.

What are VGA and DVI, and do they carry sound?

VGA and DVI are primarily computer-video connectors. Neither carries audio in the normal configurations described here, so a separate audio cable is required.

How do I identify VGA?

VGA is an analogue 15-pin D-sub connector, commonly blue, with two thumbscrews. It is wider than a small audio plug and has three staggered rows of pin holes. Connect the computer’s VGA output to a display input labeled VGA, PC or similar, then route computer sound through the nearby 3.5 mm audio input when provided.

How do I identify DVI?

DVI is a large rectangular connector with a pin grid and a distinctive flat blade at one side. DVI-I and DVI-D have different pin layouts, so inspect the socket and the source specification before ordering an adapter. DVI can transmit high-definition video, but it does not transmit sound; use an appropriate optical, digital-coaxial or RCA audio path separately.

An HDMI-to-DVI adapter can bridge compatible digital video between a newer HDMI source and an older DVI display. The adapter does not create an audio connection, so plan a second audio route and verify which device supplies the sound.

Does HDMI carry both video and audio?

HDMI is a thin, flat, trapezoidal digital connector designed to carry uncompressed high-definition video and audio in one cable. The source connects to an HDMI input on the display or receiver, and the display must be switched to the matching HDMI input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do ARC and eARC mean?

ARC and eARC identify an HDMI port with an audio-return function. Connect the television’s labeled ARC/eARC port to a compatible soundbar or receiver port and follow both devices’ manuals for input selection and audio settings. A regular HDMI port may carry source audio and video to the television but does not automatically provide the return path indicated by ARC/eARC.

Which ports are optical or digital-coaxial audio?

An optical, or Toslink, socket is usually square, may have a spring flap, and can show a red light when active. It carries digital audio only. Use a Toslink optical cable between the labeled optical output and a compatible optical input.

A digital-coaxial audio output uses one RCA-style socket, often labeled DIGITAL AUDIO OUT or COAXIAL. It also carries audio only. Because the socket may resemble a yellow composite jack, rely on the label rather than color and use a 75-ohm coaxial digital cable intended for that connection.

How are these different from analogue RCA audio?

Analogue audio uses separate left and right channels, normally white and red RCA plugs. Optical and digital coaxial use one digital-audio connection. They are not interchangeable merely because a plug fits: a yellow composite cable and a digital-coaxial cable may look similar, but the signal type and required input are different.

What does a 3.5 mm audio jack do?

A 3.5 mm socket is a small round analogue-audio connection. Labels include HEADPHONES, AUX, LINE IN, LINE OUT, AUDIO IN and PC AUDIO. It can serve headphones, powered speakers or a line-level connection, depending on the label and manual.

Color is not consistent for 3.5 mm jacks on televisions and older equipment. A headphone output is not the same as a line input, and a PC-audio input is commonly paired with VGA or DVI video. Use the named function, not the physical similarity, when selecting a cable.

What are SCART and proprietary combined sockets?

SCART is a wide rectangular multi-pin connector found mainly on European legacy televisions and players. It can consolidate several legacy signals, so read the equipment manual to determine whether a particular SCART socket is an input, output or switchable connection.

Some newer televisions expose composite or component through a proprietary 3.5 mm or multi-pin adapter. An unlabeled small socket should be treated as model-specific until its pinout is documented. Do not insert a generic headphone cable: the plug may fit while the wiring is different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which legacy cable should I buy?

Choose the cable only after confirming the socket type, signal direction, connector gender and whether the device needs a manufacturer-specific adapter. The following guide maps the common port to the appropriate cable and audio requirement.

Port or group Physical clues and labels Signal Audio included? Typical cable or extra requirement
Composite AV Yellow, red and white RCA; AV or Video Analogue standard-definition video Yes, on separate left/right RCA channels Three-plug RCA composite AV cable
Component Y/Pb/Pr Green, blue and red video jacks plus L/R Analogue video on three channels No; add red/white audio Five-plug component set or separate video and audio cables
S-Video Keyed round multi-pin socket Analogue video with separated luminance and color No; add compatible audio S-Video cable plus red/white or other audio path
RF/coaxial Threaded or push-on ANT, RF IN, CABLE, VHF/UHF Tuner feed Yes, television audio and video in the RF signal Coaxial antenna/cable lead
VGA 15-pin D-sub, often blue, thumbscrews Analogue computer video No VGA cable plus 3.5 mm audio when needed
DVI Rectangular pin grid and side blade Digital video; DVI variants have different pin layouts No Correct DVI cable or HDMI-to-DVI adapter plus separate audio
HDMI Flat trapezoidal digital socket Digital high-definition video Yes, normally HDMI cable; ARC/eARC requires compatible labeled ports for return audio
Optical/Toslink Square flap, sometimes visible red light Digital audio Audio only Toslink optical cable
Digital coaxial Single RCA-style socket labeled DIGITAL AUDIO OUT or COAXIAL Digital audio Audio only 75-ohm digital-coaxial cable
3.5 mm audio Small round jack labeled by function Analogue audio Audio only 3.5 mm cable appropriate to input, output or headphone use
SCART Wide rectangular multi-pin connector Legacy audio/video functions vary by device Depends on the assigned SCART function SCART cable and the manual’s input/output specification

How can I connect an old VCR, DVD player or console to a modern TV?

Start by matching the source output to a television input that supports the same signal. If both devices have composite, use the three RCA leads. If both have S-Video, use S-Video for video and a separate audio connection. For component, connect all three Y/Pb/Pr video leads and the red/white audio pair, then select the correct component input.

What if the television has a shared or unusual legacy input?

Read the television’s manual for the exact adapter and pin assignment. A small 3.5 mm socket may be a proprietary AV breakout rather than ordinary headphones, and a shared component/composite group may change function based on the selected input. Use the specified adapter and the labels printed beside each contact.

What if the source and TV have different connector families?

Use an adapter only when the two standards and signal directions are compatible, and confirm whether audio travels separately. HDMI-to-DVI is a common digital-video bridge, but DVI still needs its own audio path. When no matching input or documented adapter exists, do not assume that a passive cable will translate the signal; consult the device documentation for the required solution.

How do I connect an old computer?

For a VGA computer, connect VGA for the picture and the computer’s 3.5 mm audio output to the display’s PC AUDIO or analogous input. For DVI, identify whether the source and display use DVI-I or DVI-D, connect the matching video cable or a compatible HDMI-to-DVI adapter, and route sound separately through optical, digital coaxial or RCA as supported by the equipment.

After connecting, select the display input labeled PC, VGA, DVI or HDMI as appropriate. A blank picture with audible sound, or a picture with no sound, usually indicates that the independent video and audio paths have not both been selected.

What should I check when a legacy connection does not work?

No picture

  • Confirm the source is connected to an output and the television to an input.
  • Recheck the connector family: yellow composite is not green/blue/red component, and RF is not composite.
  • For component, verify every Y/Pb/Pr plug is in the matching labeled socket.
  • On shared or proprietary inputs, confirm that the model-specific adapter and input mode are correct.
  • Select the television input that corresponds to the physical socket rather than relying on automatic switching.

Picture but no sound

  • Check whether the video connector is one of the video-only types: component, S-Video, VGA or DVI.
  • Connect the required red/white, 3.5 mm, optical or digital-coaxial audio path.
  • Ensure the audio input selected on the television or receiver is the one paired with that video input.
  • Do not plug a red Pr/Cr component lead into the red right-audio socket, or vice versa.

Sound but no picture

This usually means the audio route is correct while the video lead, input selection or video standard is wrong. Inspect the yellow, Y/Pb/Pr, S-Video, VGA, DVI or HDMI connection independently and verify the source’s video output is active.

Wrong colors or an unstable image

Wrong colors on a component setup commonly indicate that Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr are crossed. A composite lead placed in a component socket, or a shared input configured for the other mode, can produce a similarly confusing result. Power down if necessary, reconnect according to the labels, and select the documented input mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I identify a port when color and shape conflict?

Give priority to the printed function, then the manual’s pinout, then the connector’s shape and pin count. For example, a red RCA labeled Pr is component video even though a red RCA labeled R beside it is right audio. A single RCA labeled DIGITAL AUDIO OUT is digital coaxial audio even if its color resembles composite video. When no label is present, photograph the panel and locate the device model’s connector diagram before connecting equipment.

What is the practical decision sequence?

  1. Need a VCR, DVD player or older console connection? Look first for matching composite red/white/yellow sockets; use all three for picture and stereo sound.
  2. See green, blue and red video labels? Treat them as Y/Pb/Pr component video and add the separate red/white audio pair.
  3. See a keyed round multi-pin socket? It is likely S-Video; plan separate audio.
  4. See a threaded antenna-style connector? It is RF/coaxial for a tuner feed, not a yellow AV input.
  5. See a 15-pin thumbscrew connector or a DVI blade-and-pin grid? Expect video only and add the appropriate computer-audio connection.
  6. See a flat trapezoidal digital socket? HDMI normally carries both; ARC/eARC adds the return-audio role when both devices support it.
  7. See a square flap or one RCA labeled digital audio? Choose Toslink for optical or 75-ohm coaxial digital cable for digital coaxial.
  8. See an unlabeled small socket? Stop and verify the model-specific adapter or pinout before inserting a generic cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a yellow RCA cable carry sound?

No. Yellow is normally the composite-video channel. Sound travels on the separate white left-audio and red right-audio RCA plugs.

Can I use any red RCA socket for right-channel audio?

No. On a component group, the red socket may be Pr/Cr video. Use the printed R/L audio labels and the Y/Pb/Pr labels to distinguish the two functions.

Is S-Video noticeably different from composite?

S-Video keeps luminance and color information on separate conductors, so it can provide somewhat higher quality than composite when both devices support it. It still needs an independent audio connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an optical cable carry a television picture?

No. Toslink is a digital-audio-only connection. Use a separate video connection such as HDMI, component, composite, S-Video, VGA or DVI as supported by the devices.

Why does an HDMI-to-DVI connection have no sound?

DVI carries video but not audio. The adapter can provide the picture between compatible digital devices, while sound must travel through a separate optical, digital-coaxial or analogue connection supported by the equipment.
