Paperclip is the control plane; a VPS is the always-available place where that control plane runs. Paperclip coordinates agents you supply, their goals, roles, budgets, approvals and activity. It does not generate agent intelligence itself. Hosting it on a Linux VPS gives your team a persistent remote service with a custom domain, HTTPS and login, but it does not make every agent run continuously. Agents wake for assigned work and follow-up messages; optional timer heartbeats and scheduled routines add other wake triggers. The VPS keeps Paperclip reachable while each agent still depends on its configured runtime, model access and triggers.
This distinction matters when you plan capacity, security and cost. The official guide says a 1-vCPU, 2-GB-RAM VPS is enough to get started on Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04, not that it can support every production workload. Concurrent agents, database load, storage, backups and other services determine the real size.
What is Paperclip, and what does a VPS add?
Paperclip is management and governance software for a team of AI agents. You define organizational goals, assign work, set roles and budgets, approve actions, pause or stop runs, and inspect an activity history. The agents themselves come from the runtimes and model providers that you connect; Paperclip is not an agent model.
A virtual private server (VPS) is a rented Linux server in a data center. Installing Paperclip there gives it a persistent network address and storage instead of tying it to a laptop that may sleep, lose power or change networks. The documented remote setup uses a custom domain, HTTPS and authenticated access. You can also run Paperclip locally when remote reachability is unnecessary.

Think of the arrangement as three separate layers:
- Paperclip: task orchestration, governance, budgets, approvals and records.
- Agent runtime: the process and model credentials that actually perform a task.
- VPS: the operating environment that keeps the Paperclip service, database and files available.
Keeping these layers distinct prevents a common mistake: treating server uptime as proof that agents are permanently executing.
Do Paperclip agents run continuously on a VPS?
No. A running VPS keeps the Paperclip service online, but agents wake according to configured triggers. The project documentation states that “Agents wake for assigned work and follow-up messages.” Optional timer heartbeats and scheduled routines can create additional wake-ups; they do not turn every agent into an unrestricted, nonstop process.

An agent may therefore be idle while the VPS is healthy. A typical sequence is:
- Paperclip records a task assignment, follow-up message, heartbeat or scheduled routine.
- The relevant agent runtime starts or resumes and receives the work.
- The runtime reports activity and spend back to Paperclip.
- Paperclip records the result, requests approval when configured, or queues the next follow-up.
If an agent fails to wake, check its runtime, credentials, trigger configuration and logs rather than assuming the VPS is down. Conversely, if the VPS is unavailable, users cannot reach Paperclip and scheduled wake-ups cannot be coordinated until service is restored.
Why use a VPS instead of running Paperclip on a desktop?
A VPS is useful when several people or automated routines need a stable, remotely reachable Paperclip instance. It moves availability, networking and storage into an environment designed to stay online.
Remote access for a team
The installation guidance describes a custom domain, HTTPS and login for a remotely accessible deployment. Team members can use the same secured address without connecting to the host computer’s local network.

Persistent service and data
A VPS can keep the Paperclip process, its database and local files running through a laptop reboot or office power outage. Persistence still depends on your storage and backup design; a VPS is not automatically a backup.
Centralized operations
One server gives you a single place to update Paperclip, restrict network access, monitor health and restore data. The trade-off is that you must administer the operating system, domain, TLS certificate, credentials, updates and recovery plan.
What VPS resources and software versions are required?
Use the official figures as a starting point, not a production capacity promise.
| Item | Documented guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and memory | 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM is enough to get started | Starter sizing only; concurrent agents, database activity and other services may require more |
| Reference operating system | Ubuntu 22.04 or Ubuntu 24.04 | Use a currently supported release and apply security updates |
| Source-development runtime | Node.js 24.11 or newer | Current quickstart requirement; verify the live installation page before deployment |
| Package manager | pnpm 9.15 or newer | Applies to the documented source setup; confirm compatibility when versions change |
| Database and files | Local setup uses embedded PostgreSQL and local file storage; production uses the operator’s PostgreSQL and deployment approach | Plan persistent volumes, credentials and backups for production |
The Node.js and pnpm numbers come from the project quickstart and can change. Recheck the current installation instructions immediately before installing. A small VPS may be adequate for a trial with light activity but can become memory-constrained when several runtimes, a database, monitoring and reverse-proxy services share it.

How do I deploy Paperclip on a VPS?
The documented path is a Linux VPS with a custom domain, HTTPS and login. The exact installer and configuration keys can change, so use the current Paperclip installation page for commands while following this order.
- Provision the server. Create a Linux VPS using Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 as the reference distributions. Start with at least 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for a small installation, leaving room to scale if monitoring shows pressure.
- Secure the administrator account. Use SSH keys instead of a password where possible, disable unnecessary services, apply operating-system updates and restrict inbound ports to what the deployment needs. Keep an emergency recovery method documented.
- Choose the access name. Register or use a domain you control and create a DNS record pointing the chosen host name to the VPS address. Wait for DNS propagation before testing HTTPS.
- Install Paperclip. Follow the current official installation procedure on the server. If you are building from source, install the stated Node.js 24.11+ and pnpm 9.15+ versions; do not substitute older versions simply because they are available in the distribution repository.
- Configure production persistence. Use the PostgreSQL arrangement recommended for production and place file storage on a persistent volume. Store database and agent credentials outside source control, with permissions limited to the service account.
- Publish HTTPS and login. Configure the documented reverse-proxy or deployment method for your domain, obtain a valid TLS certificate, and enable the Paperclip login flow. Test both an authenticated user session and a rejected unauthenticated request.
- Connect agent runtimes. Add only the runtimes and model credentials you intend to operate. Give each agent the minimum permissions and budget needed for its assignment.
- Exercise a safe workflow. Create a small assignment, verify that the agent wakes, inspect the activity record, test an approval gate, and confirm that pausing or stopping behaves as expected before scheduling recurring work.
- Document recovery. Record the domain, server access method, deployment version, database backup location, storage mount and credential-rotation procedure. A replacement VPS should be reproducible from this information.
Which controls keep agent work governed?
Paperclip provides approval workflows, budgets, pause and stop operations, and activity history. Use them as operational controls that make work inspectable, not as a guarantee that every action is blocked instantly.

Approvals
Require a human approval for sensitive tasks, such as publishing, sending messages or changing production systems. Define which actions need approval before assigning work so an agent cannot reach an ambiguous boundary.
Budgets
Set budgets per agent or activity where the product supports them, and review recorded spend. The repository notes that enforcement uses recorded usage; reporting latency or work already in flight can delay a stop. Leave a safety margin instead of setting a limit equal to the maximum amount you can tolerate.
Pause and stop
Pause prevents new work from proceeding under the configured control, while stop is an intervention for an active or queued run. Because in-flight execution and reporting can take time, verify the activity log and provider-side usage after stopping rather than assuming an immediate cutoff.
Audit history
Use activity records to connect assignments, wake-ups, approvals, results and spend. Retain those records according to your organization’s incident and compliance requirements, and protect the database backups as carefully as the live instance.
What does Paperclip VPS hosting cost?
You pay for two distinct categories: the VPS service and agent usage. The welcome guide gives an indicative agent-usage range of $20–100+ per month, but that is an estimate, not a quote or a durable benchmark. Actual spend varies with agent count, how often they wake, the models and providers selected, prompt and output volume, and work that continues before reporting or a stop takes effect.

Budget for backups, monitoring, a domain and possible database or storage services in addition to the base server. A low monthly VPS bill can be outweighed by uncontrolled model usage if schedules and budgets are left open.
Should I run Paperclip locally or remotely?
Choose local hosting when one operator is experimenting on a trusted network and remote availability is not needed. Choose a VPS when a team, scheduled routines or integrations require a stable address and service that remains available without a personal computer.
| Decision factor | Local instance | VPS instance |
|---|---|---|
| Reachability | Usually limited to the local machine or network | Designed for remote access through a domain and HTTPS |
| Availability | Depends on the computer’s power and network | Hosted in a data center, subject to provider and maintenance outages |
| Administration | Less server infrastructure, but the desktop is the dependency | Requires OS, network, TLS, updates and recovery operations |
| Data responsibility | Local database and files still need backups | Persistent volumes and off-server backups must be designed and tested |
| Scaling | Bound by the host computer | CPU, RAM and storage can usually be resized or separated as load grows |
How should I size and operate the server as usage grows?
Measure before resizing. Watch memory pressure, CPU saturation, database latency, storage growth, restart frequency and the number of simultaneous agent runs. Increase RAM when the operating system or database is swapping; add CPU when concurrent runtime work is consistently queued; expand storage before the database or file volume reaches its limit.
Separate failure domains
For a serious deployment, place backups outside the VPS and test restoration on a separate environment. Keeping the only database copy on the same server leaves a disk failure, account lockout or mistaken deletion able to remove both service and recovery data.
Control schedules
Start with conservative heartbeat and routine schedules. Increase frequency only when the resulting work is valuable and the recorded spend is understood. A VPS can run the scheduler reliably, but it cannot make an uneconomical schedule safe.
Plan updates
Record the Paperclip version, Node.js and pnpm versions, database migration status and custom configuration. Apply updates in a maintenance window, back up first, and verify login, a test assignment and activity history afterward.

What are the common failure modes?
- The domain does not open: Check DNS records, firewall rules, the service process and whether the TLS certificate covers the exact host name.
- HTTPS works but login fails: Confirm the configured base URL, certificate chain, clock accuracy and identity settings; test in a private browser window to rule out stale cookies.
- An agent never wakes: Inspect its runtime connection, credentials, assignment state and trigger settings. A healthy VPS alone does not create an agent run.
- Runs stop later than expected: Review recorded usage and in-flight activity. Budget enforcement and stop operations can lag while reporting catches up.
- The server becomes unresponsive: Check memory and swap first, then database and storage utilization. Temporarily reduce concurrent or scheduled work before resizing.
- Data disappears after a restart: Verify that PostgreSQL and file storage use persistent volumes rather than ephemeral container or server paths, then restore from a tested backup if necessary.
What does “full control” realistically mean?
On a self-managed VPS, you control the host account, network exposure, Paperclip configuration, connected runtimes, budgets, approvals, schedules and data-retention choices. You do not control the underlying data-center hardware or the behavior of an external model provider, and governance settings cannot retroactively undo work that has already run. Full control therefore means an inspectable, configurable operating boundary—not unlimited execution or a guarantee against every unwanted result.

Can I use Paperclip without buying a VPS?
Yes. Paperclip supports a local instance, which is suitable for development or a single operator who does not need remote access. A VPS becomes useful when the service must remain reachable independently of a personal computer or serve scheduled team workflows.
Do I need a public domain to test Paperclip?
No. A local setup can be tested on the host machine or private network. The custom domain, HTTPS and login described in the remote installation path are for a remotely reachable deployment, not a prerequisite for every experiment.
Are Paperclip’s budget limits an exact spending cap?
Treat them as governance controls around recorded usage, not as a real-time payment firewall. Reporting delays and in-flight work can mean that the final provider charge exceeds the moment at which a stop was requested, so keep margin and monitor provider billing separately.
What should I back up for a VPS deployment?
Back up the PostgreSQL data, Paperclip file storage, deployment configuration and the recovery information for your domain and credentials. Store at least one copy outside the VPS and perform a restoration drill before relying on the backup.
